Title: Meridian F80 Audio System Reviewed ( -at -) TheTechLounge Quote: "If you've never heard of Meridian, well, I hate to say it, but it's probably because you're just like me and can't afford to spend your entire annual income on a pair of loudspeakers. While I think it's safe to say that the F80 won't set you back that much, it's definitely not a cheap audio solution either. Let's take a closer look and see what kind of value the unit has to offer..." 2. Hello, If you're the type who thinks of 2.5" drive technology only in terms of notebook products, then recently, Western Digital probably helped expand your horizons a bit. With the release of their VelociRaptor 300GB SATA hard drive, mainstream users were exposed to the advantages of the high transfer rates associated with 2.5" platters rotating at 10K RPM, with four access heads pulling data. Though packed in a 3.5" form-factor for desktop system compatibility, the 2.5", dual 150GB platter platform that the VelociRaptor was built on allows it to outperform virtually all standard 3.5" SATA drives on the market today, even WD's 10K RPM Raptor WD1500 series. However, the VelociRaptor is definitely targeted to the performance enthusiast, with a price tag currently at $1/GB (MSRP $299). Regardless, when you consider the upside potential performance gains and the fact that a hard drive is easily the slowest component and limiting factor in many areas of overall system responsiveness, it's obvious this new Raptor will do well from a retail perspective. But what about the Data Center? It was with these questions in mind that we decided to RAID up not two but three WD VelociRaptor drives in a RAID 5 configuration with an Areca PCIe X8 hardware RAID card, to see what the numbers looked like. Head on over to the site and take a look... 3. Hello, We've just posted our latest review and would love it if you linked it. TIA! "Winamp is an extremely popular, fast, and flexible media player for Windows. The software - which is available for free and as the $19.99 Pro version - supports pretty much every major audio and video file you can through at it, and it can be skinned for a completely new look and feel. Indeed, Winamp supports more than 10000 interface skins, 300 visualisation plug-ins and CDDB support for automatic CD audio title listing, making it the most customisable media manger on the planet. One word of warning: pay attention during the install, as Winamp will install several promotional utilities unless they are unchecked from the list." http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=767 _____ Christian Harris Editor/Publisher BIOS (http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk) _____

  7. Even with new GPUs from both AMD and NVIDIA the GeForce 9600 GT is very appealing. Price drops and a large variety of cards featuring passive coolers, overclocked cores and custom heatsinks have expanded the 9600GT market to offer someone for just about everyone. If you are looking for a new budget graphics card check out out roundup of options. URL: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=564&type=expert Quote: "The 9600 GT might seem a tad bit less exciting after the most recent AMD and NVIDIA GPU releases, but you can't argue with a $130 graphics card that is able to perform as well as it did in our tests! Both the ASUS EN9600GT TOP and the XFX 9600 GT XXX cards were overclocked out of the box offering better performance than reference cards and the ASUS EN9600GT Silent should be a welcome addition to anyone's quiet-computing environment. Keep an eye on all three of these cards as the prices continue to fall over the summer and pick one up for for that second gaming system or even for your HTPC." Thanks for a post! 9. ASUS EN9600GT TOP Video Card Review The GeForce 9600 GT has been on the market for some time now and prices seem to keep dropping. The ASUS EN9600GT series feature a 10% core clock frequency boost and improved cooling for those looking to push the limits of their graphics. The ASUS EN9600GT Series uses the Glaciator Fansink, which reduces temperatures and is ultra quiet with operating levels of only 25dB. If your budget doesn't allow you to get a $229 GeForce 9800 GTX+ then check out this card as it's $100 less at $129 after rebate. Quote: "The Asus 9600 GT TOP edition is obviously not the fastest card in NVIDIA’s line up but that is not the goal here. As of this writing, the Asus 9600 GT is selling for $129 after a $20 Mail-in-rebate, which is an astounding value! You get a card with a great cooling, low-noise heat sink, and an overclocked card for the same price as a reference model. Though the performance differences weren’t that large compared to the reference card the heat sink easily makes this card the, forgive the pun, TOPS in its class..." 10. Phone plugins Update: Quick-dial and quick-send text from context menus - Published on 06/27/08 Berlin based nova media updated 'Phone plugins' to version 2.1 today. Phone plugins is a utility to quick-dial a selected number and quick-send a text message with one click from any program in Mac OS X Leopard. Version 2.1 now offers context menu support for most applications and compatibility with more than 165 cell phones. Berlin, Germany - Berlin based nova media updated 'Phone plugins' to version 2.1 today. Phone plugins is a utility to quick-dial a selected number and quick-send a text message with one click from any program in Mac OS X Leopard. Version 2.1 now offers context menu support for most applications and compatibility with more than 165 cell phones. Phone plugins from nova media revives a long lost function in Mac OS X. Back in 10.4 it was possible to dial a number and send a text message from the Address Book using a cell phone connected over bluetooth. Using Phone plugins, this option is available again for Mac OS X 10.5 and many cell phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. "Version 2.1 now displays a confirmation if a text message has been sent successfully." states Jan Fuellemann, PR spokesperson at nova media. "And we added support for additional 14 cell phones from Nokia and Sony Ericsson." Phone plugins includes its own Bluetooth wizard to connect a cell phone to the Mac in one convenient step. The software can be used immediately after the pairing with no need to restart the Mac. It is suffcient to select any number and choose 'Dial number' or 'Send text message' within Address Book or within any other Mac OS X-compatible application by using the 'Services' menu. Phone plugins will either have the cell phone issue a call and bring up a status window on the screen or open a text message window on the screen accordingly. If the selected number is known to Address Book, Phone plugins will display the appropriate name in the new call window or text message window automatically. Pricing and Availability: Phone plugins is available today for $9.95 USD (Euro 9,95) plus VAT if applicable on nova media's website. A demo version is provided as well. The update to version 2.1 is free for current owners of a Phone plugins 2.0 license. Phone plugins requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or higher and a compatible cell phone from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung or Sony Ericsson. nova media: http://www.novamedia.de Phone plugins: http://www.novamedia.de/e_pages/e_produkte_mac_phone_plugins.html Direct Download Link: http://www.novamedia.de/download/e_demo_pp_mac.html Purchase Link: http://www.novamedia.de/order/e_order_pp_mac.html Screenshot: http://www.novamedia.de/images/images_produkte/pp_adbook_images/pp_ab_sms_en.png Screenshot/App Icon: http://www.novamedia.de/images/images_produkte/images_main/pp_adbook.png The founders of "nova media Mobile Data Solutions GmbH" started their business in 1996 in Berlin. 11. Dear Media friends, APH Networks has published a new review that your readers might enjoy. A post in your site's news section would be greatly appreciated! * Title: Lamptron Case Lighting Products ( -at -) APH Networks * Description: When it comes to customization of personal computers, no one can disregard the popularity of the application of lighting effects -- it seems that adding lights are the basics of case modding. The funny thing is that the use of case lights in the general custom built personal computer market are decreasing in popularity in the computer scene as far as I can see -- I haven't used any lights since my pair of cold cathodes went on fire in 2005 (Hey, I'm not kidding. It smelled really bad). I'm not the only one though, many enthusiasts with nice cases and large side windows either didn't install any lights at all, or simply did it in a half-hearted fashion. That did not turn me away from case lighting though; the reason why I did not have any case lights for the past few years is that I was simply too lazy to find some. Not to mention that while there's an abundance of such products in the market, but none of them really appealed to my tastes because they are all so... generic, or simply just trying way too hard to be unique that ironically inhibited its very purpose. Of course, that's not until Lamptron contacted us with their huge array of unique case lighting products that's actually practical in my opinion. Today, we'll take a look at five out of the many products from Lamptron, and see how they fit in with my Silverstone KL-02 which incorporates a huge window on the side. If you've been following my computer photo posts for a while, you may have seen them already, if you haven't, they look absolutely beautiful. I won't waste anymore of your time, let's jump to the details. * Link: http://aphnetworks.com/reviews/lamptron_case_lighting_products * Image: http://aphnetworks.com/review/lamptron_case_lighting_products/013.JPG

    Swfdec 0.7.2 released

Hey, finally, only 3 months late, here is the first release of Swfdec's unstable 0.7 series. Swfdec is a decoder/renderer for Adobe Flash animations. It is provided as a library and a set of tools, like the Mozilla browser plugin. swfdec-0.7.2 "Rock You" http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/download/swfdec/0.7/swfdec-0.7.2.tar.gz MD5: 7624b5642c947fb054273f091a1d970c The most visible new thing in Swfdec is the ability to enter text in text fields and the fact that pushing the fullscreen button on Youtube will give you a full screen video. But most work was spent on the debugging framework and script interpretation conformance. See the NEWS file for more details. swfdec-mozilla-0.7.2 "Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?" http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/download/swfdec-mozilla/0.7/swfdec-mozilla-0.7.2.tar.gz MD5: 3bc6a49357b4b8b478ce3dfb4f007f18 The mozilla plugin saw some long-requested features. It now remembers which files the user clicked on to play them and autoplays them the next time. Also, it is the first plugin to support windowless mode on Linux, so all stacking problems should now be a thing of the past. However, the windowless mode is not yet perfect and can cause problems with Mozilla-based browsers. We are working on it. Even though this is a development release, Swfdec still follows the no-crashes-allowed policy. Should you still succeed in finding a crasher, please immediately file a bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org. For more information about Swfdec, see http://swfdec.freedesktop.org Cheers, Benjamin _______________________________________________
  16. We are pleased to announce version 0.3.4 of Vala, a compiler for the GObject type system. Vala 0.3.4 is now available for download at: http://download.gnome.org/sources/vala/0.3/ Changes since 0.3.3 * Various improvements to D-Bus client and service support. * Basic support for detailed signals. * Check types of printf arguments. * Support `in' operator for Gee.Collection and Gee.Map (Jamie McCracken) * Add libgsf-1 bindings (Michael Lawrence) * Add loudmouth-1.0 bindings (Ali Sabil) * Updates to the GLib, GTK+, and GStreamer bindings. * Many bug fixes. Vala is a new programming language that aims to bring modern programming language features to GNOME developers without imposing any additional runtime requirements and without using a different ABI compared to applications and libraries written in C. valac, the Vala compiler, is a self-hosting compiler that translates Vala source code into C source and header files. It uses the GObject type system to create classes and interfaces declared in the Vala source code. It's also planned to generate GIDL files when gobject- introspection is ready. The syntax of Vala is similar to C#, modified to better fit the GObject type system. Vala supports modern language features as the following: * Interfaces * Properties * Signals * Foreach * Lambda expressions * Type inference for local variables * Generics * Non-null types * Assisted memory management * Exception handling Vala is designed to allow access to existing C libraries, especially GObject-based libraries, without the need for runtime bindings. Each to be used library requires a Vala API file at compile-time, containing the class and method declarations in Vala syntax. Vala currently comes with bindings for current versions of GLib, GTK+, and many more. Using classes and methods written in Vala from an application written in C is not difficult. The Vala library only has to install the generated header files and C applications may then access the GObject-based API of the Vala library as usual. It should also be easily possible to write a bindings generator for access to Vala libraries from applications written in e.g. C# as the Vala parser is written as a library, so that all compile-time information is available when generating a binding. More information about Vala is available at http://live.gnome.org/Vala The Vala Team Jürg Billeter and Raffaele Sandrini _______________________________________________

  23. The Top Spin series has been incredibly popular since its inception and with the latest release on the next generation consoles the success is sure to continue. 2K games with developer PAM have rather surprisingly totally overhauled the gameplay mechanic and while it is for the better, does it actually work? http://www.driverheaven.net/gamingreviews.php?reviewid=611 DriverHeaven and GamingHeaven News Mailer
  24. Bigbruin.com has new content posted... A mention in your site's news section would be greatly appreciated! Title: Kingston HyperX 2GB DDR3-1600 Dual Channel Memory Kit URL: http://www.bigbruin.com/2008/kingston1600_1 Image URL (150x70 pixels): http://www.bigbruin.com/2008/kingston1600/logo.gif Quote: Despite the Kingston HyperX 2GB DDR3-1600 dual channel memory kit having fairly loose timings (9-9-9-37), it manages to keep pace with other kits rated much more aggressively (7-7-7-18). The performance at 1600MHz and higher was just fine, the only issue I had was that getting there was not as easy as with other kits. Of the five kits used in this review, the one from Kingston was the only one to lack an XMP profile in SPD. Thank you. Best regards, Jason www.bigbruin.com
