  1. Hello, OCIA.net has posted their review of the TekNmotion Pulsar SX PC Gaming Headphones. Below is a direct quote from the review: "TekNmotion specializes in CD/DVD carrying cases, individual disc cases as well as sleeving for individual discs. The Pulsar SX Gaming Headset, released just two months ago, represents their introduction into the gaming market. According to their website, this headset has been in development for over two yeas and includes pretty much everything that you need in a gaming headset... except the high price. Can this newcomer really produce a quality gaming headset at a fraction of the price?" 4. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Visual) - XFX GeForce GTX 280 XXX Edition QUOTE: "If the GTX 280 AMP! Edition from ZOTAC wasn’t enough MHz for you, we might have the card for you today. XFX is back once again, carrying with it some pretty mean speeds on the new GTX 280 XXX Edition. While the XFX GTX 280 does come in 30MHz lower on the core compared to the ZOTAC offering, it does carry with it a significantly higher 200MHz DDR memory clock. Let’s find out if that makes up for the reduced core speed." Background ========== FreeType is a font rendering library for TrueType Font (TTF) and Printer Font Binary (PFB). Affected packages ================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 media-libs/freetype < 2.3.6 >= 2.3.6 Description =========== Regenrecht reported multiple vulnerabilities in FreeType via iDefense: * An integer overflow when parsing values in the Private dictionary table in a PFB file, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-2008-1806). * An invalid free() call related to parsing an invalid "number of axes" field in a PFB file (CVE-2008-1807). * Multiple off-by-one errors when parsing PBF and TTF files, leading to heap-based buffer overflows (CVE-2008-1808). Impact ====== A remote attacker could entice a user to open a specially crafted TTF or PBF file, possibly resulting in the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running an application linked against FreeType (such as the X.org X server, running as root). Workaround ========== There is no known workaround at this time. Background ========== libvorbis is the reference implementation of the Xiph.org Ogg Vorbis audio file format. It is used by many applications for playback of Ogg Vorbis files. Affected packages ================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 media-libs/libvorbis < 1.2.1_rc1 >= 1.2.1_rc1 Description =========== Will Drewry of the Google Security Team reported multiple vulnerabilities in libvorbis: * A zero value for "codebook.dim" is not properly handled, leading to a crash, infinite loop or triggering an integer overflow (CVE-2008-1419). * An integer overflow in "residue partition value" evaluation might lead to a heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-2008-1420). * An integer overflow in a certain "quantvals" and "quantlist" calculation might lead to a heap-based buffer overflow (CVE-2008-1423). Impact ====== A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by enticing a user to open a specially crafted Ogg Vorbis file or network stream with an application using libvorbis. This might lead to the execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user playing the file or a Denial of Service by a crash or CPU consumption. 10. Hi, XSReviews have posted a new article. Whoopty has written an article on the issues with* The Incredible Hulk for the PC.** **Title:* Incredible Hulk PC Issues ( -at -) XSReviews *Review Link**:* http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/editorial/gaming/incredible-hulk-my-issues/ * Thumnail: *http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/article_image.php?i=30 *Quote:* "The Incredible Hulk movie released just over a week ago, was head and shoulders above the rather odd 2003 film of the same name. However, while the game on the Xbox and PS3 didn't receive the greatest scores, they did at least have something the PC version didn't, next gen graphics. The PC version's visuals, are simply shocking, so much so, that I complained on the Sega forums. Turns out I complained in such a lengthy manner I wrote over 1200 words on the topic; and I thought they would make an interesting basis for a short write up on the game." *A news post on your site would be very much appreciated. 11. Title: ZEROTherm ZEN FZ120 Cooler Review ( -at -) HardwareLogic Quote: "ZEROtherm <http://www.zerotherm.net/> focuses on cooling products, such as CPU coolers, VGA coolers and high performance thermal grease. Their focus has led to top-notch products in all the previously mentioned areas. They have broke of out of the OEM market and, without question, earned the respect of computer enthusiasts and the cooling industry. Last October the release of the Nirvana CPU cooler <http://www.hardwarelogic.com/news/137/ARTICLE/1406/2007-10-29.html> rocked our socks off. The Nirvana did such a fantastic job we were ecstatic to get the opportunity to test the new Zen FZ120 on our new cooling test bench. But how does he stack up against his big brother and many other fine competitors?" Link: http://hardwarelogic.com/news/137/ARTICLE/3761/2008-06-23.html

  13. Hi, We've just posted a new article on our website, Hardware Secrets. Title: Amazon Kindle Review Link: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/573 Category: Reviews Summary: Review of the Amazon Kindle e-book reader. Here is a snippet: "Over the years, there have been other electronic book readers, but none has been highly successful. The Kindle is the first device of this type developed by Amazon.com, a company whose primary focus is on books. Can a company that understands how to sell books deliver a technologically superior and universally-accepted e-book reader? We took a good look at the Kindle to find out." A news post would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Gabriel Torres Editor-in-Chief Hardware Secrets http://www.hardwaresecrets.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  14. Hello, We've just posted our latest review and would love it if you linked it. TIA! "If you're using Firefox 2, the obvious benefit of downloading the latest version is its improved rendering speed, the clever new data mining tools for bookmarks and browser history, and the many security-related features built right into it. Memory usage is thrifty, and it doesn't seem to freeze as often as the last version. The so-called 'Awesome Bar' will delight some and annoy the heck out of others (us included), and there's no easy way to turn it off. Instead, you have to go into about:config to disable it. How silly is that? Firefox 3.0 is a great browser and a huge improvement over previous versions. But Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari are also good browsers - all having their adherents. So, whether you should use Firefox 3.0 is largely a personal choice. It is free after all, so you've got nothing to lose. If you are still running an earlier version, now's the time to upgrade to Firefox 3, or in case you've never used Firefox before, now's the time to do so." http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=763 _____ Christian Harris Editor/Publisher BIOS (http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk) _____

  16. What is it like to build a game using a real-time ray tracer? Ray tracing in games is a hot topic on the Internet, with industry veterans and graphics experts involved. IGAD students did it, and reflect on the development process. URL: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=582 Quote: "In contrast to the designers, for the programmers using a ray tracer seemed to make life easier. The most striking difference between a ray tracer and a rasterizer is that there are so few special cases. The same engine renders a 1M scene, including exteriors, for Outbound, and low-poly indoor scenery for Let there be Light. There is no code to limit visibility. All supported features work together effortlessly. And, programmers found themselves using rays for everything: testing particle and flare visibility, collision detection, object picking, and so on." 24. Hi all, We have just published an interview with *Jim Vesella, executive producer for C&C Kane's Wrath* - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/06/22/c-c-kane-s-wrath-producer-interview/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/06/c-c-kane-s-wrath-producer-interview/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"BT: Did you get any feedback from the fans on any specific things they wanted to see improved from Command and Conquer 3? JV: Yeah, absolutely. What we did find immediately was that people didn't think that the D-Pad was fast or comfortable enough to really utilise in an RTS game. That was kind of the first thing we wanted to do -- to try and find a new and natural evolution to the radial interface. And that's kind of what the new interface does. Also, just in terms of the gameplay, a lot of people found //Tiberium Wars was pretty tough and was very difficult on Xbox 360. With the new interface though and with the game in general we think we've made it easier by tuning the campaign a bit more and made it a better balance of difficulty. Plus, a lot of the new units and the whole idea of just going back in time and looking at Kane and so on -- all that was based on player responses." / * *Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net
  25. Hi all, We have just published a review of *Roogoo *for the PC - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/06/21/roogoo/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/06/roogoo/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"Just because the game is tough though, isn't to say that RooGoo isn't fun. It is fun to play, kind of. Fun in the same kind of way as //Peggle or //Drug Wars or any other casual game. You don't actually massively enjoy playing the game, you just crave the sense of accomplishment and completion and you get sucked into this trap early on thanks to the pick-up-and-play design. There are only two real things that prevent / /RooGoo from being a good game and neither of these are really going to be a huge problem to any initiated puzzle fans. The first is that there really isn't much to be had beyond the single game mode and once you've played one level you've played them all. The other problem is the way the game presents itself. We've joked about the bright colours, MeeMoos, King Goos, and Roos of / /RooGoo, but the reality is that they really are a problem. //RooGoo is too fast and frantic to be a kids game, so we have to judge it as more than that and while the game would still have problems if it was presented as a less immature puzzler, it would be a bit better off." /* *Cheers guys!
