  3. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Casing & Cooling) - Thermaltake DuOrb CPU Cooler QUOTE: "Over the past year I have looked at several high performance heatsinks from various manufacturers. The mould has stayed the same for nearly all of the coolers; build it tall and put large 120mm fans that push the air to the top or rear of the case and hope a case fan removes the air quickly. This is a very efficient way to cool a processor, but it leaves pockets of air around the motherboard. Thermaltake has responded to the complaints of the motherboard manufacturers in a big way; they’ve brought the Orb design back into the big leagues. This time it’s as a twin fan that will not only cool your processor, but your memory, back side of your graphics card and motherboard as well." 4. TuneConnect 2: For the Control Freak in You - Published on 06/15/08 The TuneConnect Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of TuneConnect 2.1, the latest reinvention of our revolutionary open source iTunes remote control software for Mac OS X. Featuring speed-of-light music browsing and full-featured controls, TuneConnect 2 is a complete rewrite of the old TuneConnect. Control your music beautifully, quickly, and easily, from anywhere on your network: welcome to life with TuneConnect. Pawtucket, RI - The TuneConnect Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of TuneConnect 2.1, the latest reinvention of our revolutionary open source iTunes remote control software for Mac OS X. Under heavy development for the past six months, TuneConnect 2 was written from the ground up in 100% platform-native code, using a specially-developed neutral iTunes control API. Called Tunage, this HTTP-based API allows many different kinds of devices to all share information in the same way, thereby allowing TuneConnect to work on multiple platforms. The new TuneConnect is not only the single fastest iTunes remote control on the market, it also provides the simplest, easiest-to-use interface, designed especially for Mac OS X Leopard. From one compact, size-changing window, you can play, pause, and jog through your music, choose new music to play, turn on the visualizations, modify your equalizer settings, and even queue songs for the Party Shuffle. TuneConnect also offers built-in Last.fm support, so you can share your musical tastes with the world. TuneConnect 2.1 fixes some of the bugs that cropped up in the initial release, and adds support for a small handful of the most-requested features from our users. As of now, only the Mac OS X client and server are available, though support for other platforms is on the near horizon. TuneConnect Server requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or higher, and TuneConnect itself requires 10.4, but runs best on 10.5 (Leopard). Instructions for adventurous DIY-ers will be available in the near future for installing TuneConnect Server on 10.3 (Panther). Control your music beautifully, quickly, and easily, from anywhere on your network: welcome to life with TuneConnect. There's a certain feeling that comes along with finding that amazing piece of software that does just the job you want. There's an ever better feeling that comes with finding out that it's free. My goal is to create that feeling in other people. ### Matt Patenaude Developer 401-527-3493 MattPat ( -at -) mattpat.net *******
  5. At Phoronix we have posted a new article. A link to this from your site's news section would be greatly appreciated. Title: The People Behind Mesa 3D ( -at -) Phoronix Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12482 Summary: "Following our article looking at the state of X.Org (along with announcing the release of X Server 1.4.1), we proceeded to share the contributors behind the X Server -- both the individual developers and companies involved with fostering the growth of this important free software package since 1999. What we hadn't looked at in that analysis was the people and companies behind the work on Mesa 3D, or the OpenGL component used by X. In this article, however, we have these statistics to share." 6. Tip: Reformat Your Hard Drive And Start Over With Your OS ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "How often do you perform a fresh installation of your operating system? When I say fresh, I mean completely formatting your hard drive and starting from scratch with only a copy of your favorite OS. There are no hard rules about this matter because you can pretty much do whatever you feel like, but it’s usually suggested that we do this once a year." 7. Smartphones Get Smart, Finally ( -at -) CoolTechZone.com "With RIM and Apple?s latest smartphones in the market, I?m glad to not be frustrated anymore. While I loved the original iPhone and BlackBerry devices, RIM and Apple annoyed me too much. Apple released its iPhone with a number of technologies missing, mainly integrated GPS with a good mapping service. Seriously, how crippling is that!" 8. Top 4 Browsers for Linux Reviewed ( -at -) CoolTechZone.com "In the past, I have discussed the various browsers out there for us to enjoy at length. Despite this, there has always been the question as to which one was best for which type of person. After all, we all know what each offers, but which one best fits different type of users? In this article, I hope to better answer that particular question. And of course, all platforms will be considered, not just Linux." 9. Why Apple Picked OS X Over Linux for iPhone ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "My iPhone is sitting beside me right now, and I’m still thrilled that I purchased it. I’ve never been more excited about a device, and I can’t wait to see how the iPhone continues to develop. We’re well-aware that the iPhone is running a scaled down version of OS X, and we can thank OS X for making the iPhone experience enjoyable and useful in so many ways. Since the iPhone is an Apple product, it only makes sense that OS X would be running on the device, but what makes sense now didn’t always make sense in the past." 10. Top Third-party Desktop Software: Your Suggestions? ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "In one of my recent articles, I talked about the need to format your hard drive, install your operating system, restore your most important backups, and start from scratch on occasion. That can be a lot of work, and thinking about the process is enough to make you want to avoid doing it, but once you’ve cleaned up your computer, you’ll be glad that you did." 11. Where Is Mainstream Video Content On Desktop Linux? ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "One has to admit, regardless of their feelings of just how idiotic the idea behind Digital Rights Management (DRM) may be, it is frustrating to watch the other two platforms have content we cannot enjoy ourselves." 12. How Companies Can Make Linux A Success ( -at -) MadPenguin.org "Realizing that "What if" articles tend to bring out the best and worst in people, I thought it was worth exploring this mindset again, just for kicks. This time, however, there is a clear angle to the idea. One that I hope can crossover and inspire, if nothing else." 13. Guru3D - Driver Sweeper 1.5.5 Guru3D - Driver Sweeper is a fast tool to remove driver leftovers from your system. Driver Sweeper is very easy to use. You only have to select the drivers you want to clean. The best way to clean drivers is to first uninstall the drivers using the official uninstallers, reboot in Safe Mode and run Guru3D - Driver Sweeper. However, rebooting and not going into Safe Mode also works, but can cause some files not to be cleaned. What can it be used for ? The current supported drivers are NVIDIA (Display and Chipset), ATI (Display), Creative (Sound), Ageia (PhysX), MMouse and Realtek (Sound). All the settings are saved in an ini file. Nothing is created in the registry, so it's possible to use it as a portable program. Log files can be saved to the harddisk and viewed as well. You can find the logs under the Tools menu. System requirements: The Guru3D - Driver Sweeper is fully tested on Windows 2000, XP and Vista. Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are supported. 16. A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review on the Gelid GC1 Thermal Compound Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "The Gelid GC1 Thermal Compound does exactly what it is supposed to do - adding a cushion between the processor and the cooler, and filling in any surface imperfections to enhance the thermal transfer between the CPU and cooler, and did it just as well as one of the top performers on the market right now, Arctic Silver 5. I was very impressed to see that at idle, the stock and overclocked temperatures were just about the same, and when the load was put on the processors, the GC1 was able to stay with the Arctic Silver 5 and even beat it in the Stock Load test." 17. Hello, Low budget 45 nm - Intel E7200 overclocking report "The release of the Intel Core 2 Duo E8x00 series caused a lot of overclocking records to be broken. Now we have a light version of those processors, Intel Core 2 Duo E7xx series. We took the E7200 for an overclocking spin. Let's see what we achieved." http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=838 ____________________________________ Thank you in advance for posting,
  18. Future OS X To Be DRM Restricted? ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "Whenever a patent from Microsoft or Apple is filed, we devour it like it’s fresh meat. These patents give us a glimpse of interesting things that are being worked on, and even though we may not be able to see the actual implementations for years to come, the patent filings help us to get an idea of what we can expect if they ever see the light of day. Sometimes the documented information is minor, other times it’s major, but in every situation, we can easily form opinions before it may be reasonable to do so." 19. Why Hardware Is Important For Operating Systems ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "What’s the first thing that you notice when you look at a computer? Is it the operating system? Probably not. For all you know, the computer could have Windows Me or Windows Vista installed on it, and the only way that you’d have any clue as to which OS was primarily being used is if the monitor was turned on while the computer was running. Yes, you’re going to get your first impressions from the design of the computer, and if it’s hard to even look at, then you’re probably not going to be very inclined to use it." 20. Cheap Linux PCs Scare Microsoft ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "As I sit here looking at my Zonbu(s) (a mini and the notebook), I cannot help but feel overwhelming dismay over all the progress made with "ready-to-go" Linux solutions like the Eee, Cloudbook and of course, the OLPC project. My concern is not in regard to the projects themselves, but it’s where Microsoft is trying to edge their way into something that Linux was working magic with first." 21. Is OGG Theora Still A Viable Codec? ( -at -) MadPenguin.org "Don’t misunderstand me, as I’m not preaching the value of proprietary codecs. Despite Theora's shortcomings with rendering speed and overall playback quality in comparison to proprietary alternatives, this does not mean that all open source codecs are loosing ground in the fight for your video viewing freedom." 22. DLO TransDock Micro With IntelliTune Review ( -at -) CoolTechZone.com "DLO continues to expand its iPod accessories portfolio with new additions. Although FM transmitters are nothing unique, the TransDock Micro adds an interesting feature that makes working with it a breeze. A lot of transmitters require manual setting to pick the best available FM station to transmit your iPod’s music through your car. Not with this one, however. With a press of a button, the device automatically searches for the best station between 88.1 and 107.9 to feed the audio, thanks to DLO’s IntelliTune technology. It just works, and that’s what makes it so great." 24. OLPC Harms Kids With Competitive Edge ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "While Gates had a point about OLPC being able to come to full fruition, I think he is out to lunch on the idea that third-world countries are interested in Windows, paying for software and any potential malware headaches that will arise with running a stripped down version of XP on these systems. But perhaps the bigger question is how the minds behind the OLPC project can possibly expect, or even have an interest in what Intel does with other similar projects like the ASUS Eee." 25. Microsoft and Apple: Forget the Future, Deliver on the Present ( -at -) OSWeekly.com "Whether it’s hardware, operating systems, or any other available technology gadget, we’re constantly being shown what the future is, and so much effort and time is spent on giving us a glimpse of what the future will bring. Both Microsoft and Apple focus on the future of their operating systems, and it’s only reasonable that they would do so. They want us to be excited about what they’re working on, and many times, what they tell us does get us excited for the future."
