bit-tech News: Intel believes that video encoding belongs on the CPU
news posted a topic in Upcoming News
Hi all, After speaking to several Intel executives during Computex, we learned that Intel believes video encoding belongs on the CPU and always should - we found its reasoning to be rather bizarre and full of holes, so here's our take on things. If you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/06/04/intel-says-video-encoding-belongs-on-the-cpu/1 *Quote: */""//When you're encoding on the CPU, the quality will be higher because we're determining which parts of the scene need higher bit-rates applying to them," said François Piednoel, senior performance analyst at Intel. Piednoel claimed that the CUDA video encoder will likely deliver poor quality video encodes because it uses a brute force method of splitting the scene up and treating each pixel the same. It's interesting that Intel is taking this route, because one thing Nvidia //hasn't really talked about so far is video quality. "/ /The science of video encoding is about making smarter use of the bits and not brute force," added Piednoel. I asked Piednoel what will happen when Larrabee turns up because that is, after all, a massively parallel processor. I thought it'd be interesting to see if Intel would change its tune in the future once it had something that had the raw processing power to deliver similar application performance to what is being claimed with CUDA. Intel said that comparing this to a GPU is impossible, because the GPU doesn't have full x86 cores. With CUDA, you can only code programs in C and C++, while x86 allows the developer to choose whatever programming language they prefer -- that's obviously a massive boon to anyone that doesn't code in C."/ * *Cheers guys! Hi everyone! While not everyone is obsessed with looks and packing out their system with LEDs, if you have a desire to make your rig look eye-catching then you might want something a little more special in the looks department when choosing a system fan, without losing out in the performance stakes. Enter Xthermal's BTF120PRO LED - A 120mm fan complete with a white LED and promising some decent performance and noise levels into the bargain too. Can it deliver on all of those promises? We take a look in today's review. Xthermal BTF120PRO LED cooling fan review "Xthermal's BTF120PRO series of 120mm fans are available both with and without LEDs, but as the product name suggests our version on test here today features said LED to be more pleasing on the eye. Anyhow, let's begin with a look at the retail packaging for this piece of hardware. If you were wondering what colour that LED was, the box art gives it away - It's white. Certainly makes for a pleasant change from the blue LEDs that seem to crop up on every single electronics product these days. Also mentioned is that a low noise adapter is included with the fan, supposedly reducing its noise level down to just 9 decibels." http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=575&Itemid=27 As always, a news post on your site would be hugely appreciated, and we guarantee to reciprocate by published any news items received from yourselves. Many thanks! Regards, Hanners Elite Bastards ------------------------------------- Elite Bastards News Letter www.elitebastards.com

With three prior LEGO Star Wars games from developer Travellers Tales this time around the focus is on Indiana Jones. It is a good time for an Indy game with the recent release of the new film and courtesy of some help from Lucasarts we hope this is another fun title in the successful blocky franchise. http://www.driverheaven.net/gamingreviews.php?reviewid=604 DriverHeaven and GamingHeaven News Mailer

Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Computex Taipei 2008) - GIGABYTE Video Factory Tour at Computex QUOTE: "It wouldn’t be a Computex without at least one factory tour, and GIGABYTE was kind enough to offer us a tour of their Nan Ping factory out in Taipei. This is only one of the many factories that GIGABYTE has around Asia, but this is the heart of GIGABYTE – it is where all the new research and development happens, along with production of the new boards that come out (all the new P45 boards are coming from this factory). Motherboards based on the lower cost chipsets like 945G come from China to reduce costs even further." XFX GeForce 9800 GX2 Black edition review <http://www.guru3d.com/article/xfx-geforce-9800-gx2-black-edition-review/>'>http://www.guru3d.com/article/xfx-geforce-9800-gx2-black-edition-review/> King of pre-overclocked products has to be XFX, their speed-bin of releasing OCed products is exceedingly fast. I do not think that there is an XFX product out there that is not available as a triple X edition or other series name slapped on top of it. Today will be no different, we received XFXes top of the shelf product, the GeForce 9800 GX2, the cool thing is that this is the new mystified named 'Black edition' series of cards, meaning it comes with a nice pre-overclock and an lovely game bundle. Title: MSI RX3870-T2D512E OC Videocard Review ( -at -) HardwareLogic Quote: "With both AMD and Nvidia readying a new arsenal of videocards, the real battle for GPU supremacy won't be fought until later this summer. In the meantime, gamers are enjoying attractive price points nearly across the board, and unlike days of yesteryear, enthusiasts needn't plunk down $600+ for a high end gaming experience. Remarkably, AMD's HD 3870 has nestled into the $150ish tier, unheard of territory for a higher performance part." Link: http://www.hardwarelogic.com/news/133/ARTICLE/3821/2008-06-10.html

TITLE: Vendetta 2 vs TRUE vs HDT-S1283 ( -at -) Benchmark Reviews DESCRIPTION: This article serves only one purpose: test three of the industry's most coveted coolers. Not very long ago Benchmark Reviews published the article Best CPU Cooler Performance - Q1 2008. At the time, the effort we gave in producing our test results seemed well worth the trouble. However, months later we see that there's a lot more to a cooler than just measuring performance with the same common fan. So after even more testing, we now have a full understanding of each CPU coolers individual characteristics and deliver the results to you. Benchmark Reviews is proud to present a three-way fight to the finish: The OCZ Vendetta 2 vs. Thermalright's Ultra-120 eXtreme vs. Xigmatek's HDT-S1283. A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review on the ASUS Rampage Formula Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "This motherboard was a breeze to overclock. To OC this board, I attempted to get the highest Front Side Bus that I could. After many different settings, the highest I could get stable was 470x7. This motherboard booted up at 500x7 easily, but Windows didn't like that overclock. I could get into Vista with 485x7, but it wasn't stable enough to run benchmarks. 470x7 is not a bad overclock at all in my book, but I was thoroughly surprised that this motherboard had no issues booting up with the FSB set at 500. The BIOS' "Extreme Tweaker" made it extremely easy to overclock the ASUS Rampage Formula, because all the options that I needed, and many more, were all conveniently located on the same tab." Up until now, most digital camcorders have been too expensive for the average consumer. With products like the Samsung SC-MX10 Flash Memory Camcorder, it just got a heck of a lot easier for Joe Public to transform into the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. Oh, I guess you should have some movie-making talent before you can make that leap."

I've been fortunate enough to have reviewed several of their offerings over the past few years and have been impressed with nearly all. Mellel 2.5 takes cross reference on the Mac to the next level - Published on 06/09/08 Mellel 2.5, released today by RedleX, takes cross referencing on Mac OS X to the next level, offering an elegant solution to the three most troubling problems with cross referencing. Mellel's reference entry dialogue allows users to create complex reference formats composed of different elements, such as reference to the page number, position in the text, page range, and more. Tel Aviv, Israel - Mellel 2.5, released today by RedleX, takes cross referencing on Mac OS X to the next level, offering an elegant solution to the three most troubling problems with cross referencing. "We took a long, hard look at the problems users encounter with cross referencing and did not like at all what we saw," says Eyal Redler, RedleX's CTO. "To enter a simple reference, such as 'see footnote 2 on page 45 below' with other word processors, you were forced to jump through hoops, mixing typing text and using 3 separate references, so our first mission was to make entering such a reference a one step thing." Mellel's reference entry dialogue allows, accordingly, to create complex reference formats, composed of different elements such as reference to the page number, position in the text (above, next page, below, etc.), page range, and so on. Best of all, users can save and re-use such formats again and again, making the necessary modifications as they go along. "Yet another problem was the lack of relevant information," Says Redler. "Want to reference an image or a bookmark? You have to go through a list of names, without being able to see the image or the context in which the bookmark is. Most users end up browsing the document, finding the thing they want to reference, memorising its name, going back to where they were to enter the reference. Now do that 500 times in a 500 pages manuscript. That's insanely not great." Mellel allows users to view bookmarks, images, headings, footnotes, figures, etc. in context and as they appear in the text. An image preview, for example, helps users identify images in the document with ease; Bookmarks appear with their surrounding text. "Another annoying tendency of most word processors, is their habit of not telling you what's going on," says Redler. "It's like flying blindfolded in a storm. Want to see if there's a problem with a reference? You'll need to print it, sift through the entire document, and re-create all the faulty references... and try again." This rarely happen with Mellel. References are updated "live," so users can see changes reflected immediately, and do not have to manually update or print the document. Mellel offers a tool to track down references to non-existing targets. Best of all, Mellel tracks problems so nicely, it also offers the option to create such problems in the form of references to virtual targets - chapters that were not written yet, images that will be added later, and so on. Pricing and Availability: Mellel 2.5 is free to all registered users of Mellel who've purchased Mellel after May 2006. Users who've purchased Mellel earlier can purchase an upgrade ($19 USD). Mellel 2.5 is available for download now, from the servers listed below. The price for a single user license is $49 USD, Educational license is $35 USD, 5 Pack license (5 separate licenses) is $99 USD. A Boxed Edition of Mellel is also available for $64 USD (including shipping costs).
