Asus' Eee PC has defined the budget subnotebook genre, serving up relatively low-end hardware that's just fast enough in an ultraportable form factor with an affordable price tag. It's a simple formula, really, and one that made the Eee PC an instant hit despite its small, low-resolution screen and a Lilliputian keyboard that really only works if you have the diminutive digits of a 12-year-old. Given the Eee PC's instant popularity, it's clear some folks are willing to live with some compromises to get a nice price on a teeny laptop. However, those limitations have surely turned off plenty of potential customers who were hoping for a budget subnotebook that was perhaps a little more, er, notebook-like. If you're looking for more screen real estate and room to type than the Eee PC provides, HP's Mini-Note may be right up your alley. One of the first would-be Eee PC killers, the Mini-Note directly challenges the Eee's weaknesses with a 92%-of-full-size keyboard and an 8.9" display with an impressive 1280x800 WXGA resolution. The system also features and ExpressCard slot for broadband Wi-Fi users and support for standard 2.5" mobile drives, should you require more than just a few gigabytes of storage capacity. Throw in a brushed aluminum chassis that would make Apple fans swoon and the sort of configuration flexibility you'd expect from HP, and the Mini-Note's potential grows. Targeted squarely at students, the Mini-Note looks on paper to be a more reasonable compromise than the infectious Eee PC—one suitable for a much wider range of computing tasks. But does it work in the real world? Read on for our in-depth look at HP's first budget subnotebook PC. http://techreport.com/articles.x/14816 Thanks, Geoff ---- Geoff Gasior The Tech Report http://techreport.com -- To unsubscribe from: TR-News, just follow this link:

Hi all, As part of our continuing *Computex 2008 coverage*, we have just published an early look at some of the products that will be at the show- if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/06/02/computex-2008-psp/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/06/computex-2008-psp/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"Building on the success of its Xonar D2, D2X and more recently, the DX, Asus will launch the Xonar D1 this month. It's a PCI based version of the Xonar DX <#> that we recently reviewed and we're told that it will be priced aggressively to target the alternative Creative cards in the same price range. Asus believes that, by July, its audio range will be in a position to finally claim the trumps over Creative from top to bottom -- the guys from the Xonar team we met were certainly very fired up with ideas and stories of the Xonar development spilling out from everywhere. One thing Asus has listened to is the feedback on its PCI-Express cards which are right now shipping into the channel with a floppy power to Molex adapter and all new future board designs will feature a Molex power connector instead. It's a little more frustrating to use, but Asus was adamant that because it keeps the grounding separate, the quality improves. Since the primary target is audio fidelity, this is an important goal even if it's at the expense of a little usability. With regards to gaming, Asus is not stopping with its GX3D 2.0 engine that emulates EAX 5.0. The upcoming GX 3.0 is also in the works to provide "even better features", although the Asus representatives remained tight-lipped as to what these were."/ * *Cheers guys! Today we look at the Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1800. SNIP: If you live in the US, you have probably seen TV commercials about the analog TV signal being switched off in February of 2009. For old home TV sets, there is a converter that can be purchase and the government is even stepping in to help subsidize some of the expenses for the converter. However, for thoes users who mainly use their computer to watch TV via a TV tuner, they may be out of luck unless they upgrade their old TV tuner to a new one that supports digital signals. Actually, upgrading to a new TV tuner may not be as bad as it sounds. If you have watched a digital TV image, you will surely not want to go back to an old analog image. In addition, many new TV tuners on the market come with newer technologies which offer better images and features. Furthermore, many TV tuners use PCIe, which means that you can finally put your PCIe slots on your motherboard to good use. http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1275 A post n your site would be great if you can. HighPoint RocketRAID 2302 RAID Controller Review @ Hardware Secrets
news posted a topic in Upcoming News
Hi, We've just posted a new article on our website, Hardware Secrets. Title: HighPoint RocketRAID 2302 RAID Controller Review Link: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/561 Category: Reviews Summary: Our review of HighPoint RocketRAID 2302, a simple RAID controller with two SATA-300 ports and two eSATA-300 ports based on PCI Express and supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD. Here is a snippet: "RocketRAID 2302 is one of the simplest RAID controllers from HighPoint, featuring two internal SATA-300 ports and two external eSATA-300 ports, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and JBOD. With several motherboards coming with RAID capability why should someone spend USD 120 to have an add-on RAID controller? That is the question we will try to answer in this review." A news post would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Gabriel Torres Editor-in-Chief Hardware Secrets http://www.hardwaresecrets.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- -

Title: Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 X2 Reviewed ( -at -) TheTechLounge Quote: "So why not just get two 3870s and rub a little CrossFire into your box? There are two reasons, really. For most people, that's just not an option. Dual-PCI-Express can easily tag a Benjamin onto the price of a motherboard, and, in Micro-ATX land, it's a mythical beast that visits overclockers in their dreams. And there's another thing: regular 3870s get the lower-binned GPUs--the faster-clocking chips go into the X2s. But, lastly, the 3870 promises something else: tri- and quad-CrossFireX. But that begs the initial question: now that the release is behind us, how much awesome stuck to the HD 3870 X2, and how much washed away?" Hello Technology News Community, I4U NEWS publsihed a Belkin Nostromo n52te Review. Quote from the review: "Today we are looking at the Belkin Nostromo n52te gaming keypad. The device has 15 buttons plus a D-pad with removable joystick. The n52te is powered by Razer and features backlighting for gaming in the dark. The Belkin Nostromo n52te has a learning curve, but once you get the gamepad set up to your liking and get used to the control layout it is a nice tool for gaming. Personally I will stick to my gaming keyboard, but if you frequent LAN parties the Belkin Nostromo n52te may be exactly what you need." Hi there, We've just posted our latest review and would love it if you linked it. TIA! "The PIXMA MX850 is a really good all-in-one printer that offers an exceptional range of features and great overall performance for small and home offices. Its print quality and speed suit small-business environments well, while its premium photo printing engine offers the additional versatility of occasional photo printing. Text was crisp and perfectly legible - almost comparable to laser quality - and photo prints were similarly impressive. However, photos don't have quite the range of hue that 6-colour PIXMAs such as the PIXMA MP970 can produce, and scan quality wasn't up to par. Still, the PIXMA MX850 is one of the best inkjet-based business all-in-ones currently on the market." http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=752 _____ Christian Harris Editor/Publisher BIOS (http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk) _____

Hi! We just finished our latest review. This time we took a closer look at Xigmatek's Battle-Axe GFX card GPU cooler. From the article: "In our test the Battle-Axe proved to be a very powerful graphic card cooler, but it doesn't come without a long list of down sides. First of all it's huge. This isn't a problem if the user only has one graphic card and doesn't even plan to get any other cards. Anyway it just leaves a feeling of "couldn't have been made any smaller". Techgage Article: NVIDIA splits the Atom with new Tegra mobile platform offerings
news posted a topic in Upcoming News
Hi, everyone. We've just posted an article on NVIDIA's new offerings on their Tegra mobile CPU platform, which promises to seriously put a kink in Intel's plans for their new Atom mobile CPU, delivering both astonishingly better performance, and astonishingly better battery life. Article URL: http://techgage.com/article/splitting_the_atom_nvidia_tegra/ Article Brief: NVIDIA took the opportunity at Computex to announce a brand-new chip series: Tegra. This high-performance/low power 'system on a chip' is set out to take on Intel's Atom, and if all of NVIDIA's claims are spot-on, everyone is going to want to have the chip in their mobile device once available. Hi all, We have just published a worklog of Magnus Persson's latest custom PC modification, *The Reflection HTPC* - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2008/06/02/the-reflection-htpc/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/06/the-reflection-htpc/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"So now its time again for me, the crazy Swede, to build a HTPC case - but this time, I have strayed a bit from my usual path. I'm trying to go a bit more clean and stylish in my design than before. My casemods usually have some skulls, flames or pentagrams in them, but this one has none of that at all. Even I get tired of the same old thing eventually, so now it's time for me to boldly go where I haven't gone before. My past projects like the Pentagram HTPC and the Weighted Companion PC were a lot of fun to build and I'm very happy with them, but fitting the pentagram beneath my TV turned out to be a bit of a problem. So, this time I'm going small sleek and stylish...or at least I think so. The aim here is to build a case that could be used in any living room without scaring your grandma out of her socks. For me that is a bit of a challenge since I have no experience in this type of design. But, enough with the small talk - lets get to it and do some case building." / * *Cheers guys! Hello News Partner: Benchmark Reviews has released a new article which your readers might enjoy. We would be grateful if you would please share it with them. TITLE: NVIDIA Tegra 650 Mobile Processor ( -at -) Benchmark Reviews DESCRIPTION: NVIDIA has done very well for itself over the past decade. While most of the world can recognize the chip-maker for its popular GeForce product line, very few might realize that this green-machine also has focus outside of the graphics card industry. Like any company that has mastered its craft, NVIDIA set out to develop a competitive processor design that would change the face of mobile computing. Earlier this year NVIDIA announced that they were ready to product the APX 2500 application processor for a new line of handheld mobile Internet devices, but then very little actually materialized.
