  2. Digit-Life Review: Problems of Testing 3D Performance with FRAPS. Part 2 Excerpt: "This article continues our analysis started in 2006. Problems of testing 3D performance haven't disappeared for the past two years. The major point being that not all games have built-in benchmarks, to say nothing of convenient tools, simple automation, and full FPS data output. In this article we shall analyze whether it makes sense to use FRAPS to measure performance in 3D games that have no built-in benchmarks and what measurement errors this method implies." Hi there, We've just posted our latest review and would love it if you linked it. TIA! "There's no denying that Movie Edit Pro 14 Plus is excellent value for money, especially compared to Adobe's Premiere Elements and Pinnacle's Studio. In fact, MAGIX has thrown everything but the kitchen sink into the Plus version. It's not all rosy though, and we were disappointed by the two weighty - and off-putting - paper manuals and long-winded installation process; the latter is due to the fact that the main program is accompanied by a number of additional bundled programs, including a simple 3D animation program, photo editor and a program for compiling music playlists that you can use as soundtracks for your video projects. And while the interface looks great, it isn't as slick or intuitive as its competitors. Sort out these few annoyances and MAGIX could be onto a winner in the next version. However, for now we recommend you stick to Adobe's Premiere Elements, unless you're on a really tight budget." http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=747 _____ Christian Harris Editor/Publisher BIOS (http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk) _____

    Two new articles!

It occurs to me that the advent of the botnet may be what it'll take to make the old "white hat virus" idea actually work. I call it the "benign botnet": http://www.dansdata.com/gz082.htm And there's a new letters column too, about clashing drive controllers, replacing thermal goop, gilded heat sinks, and kinking cables. It's here: http://www.dansdata.com/io082.htm A news post would be appreciated. -- Daniel Rutter http://www.dansdata.com/ - hardware reviews and more!

  6. Hello fellow editors! Tech ARP ( http://www.techarp.com/ <http://www.techarp.com/>'>http://www.techarp.com/> ) has just posted the ED#91 : Cannot Drag-and-Drop In Windows XP?! Quote - We often think there are ghosts in the system whenever it exhibits inexplicable behaviour - doing things we don't want it to do, and not doing things that we want it to do. It drives many people nuts. Of course, some people are nuts to begin with! Many of these "ghosts" can often be attributed to the users themselves, giving rise to the acronym, PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair). <http://www.techarp.com/dashken/arp%20smilies/icon_haha.gif> Even an IT guru like Dashken is no exception. 7. Geared toward the enthusiast who wants their go-anywhere notebook to be powerful, the Hypersonic Avenger AG2 Notebook series feature unparalleled performance in a sleek, colorful, and compact 12-inch size for superb mobility. The AG2 can be configured with next generation 45nm Intel Penryn processors, up to 4GB DDR2-667 memory, and a 320GB hard drive (or Solid State Drive) for maximum storage. Read on to see what we think of this new notebook! Quote: "The Hypersonic Avenger AG2 notebook was just launched on May 22nd, 2008, but that doesn't mean we haven't had a sample for well over a month now. The Hypersonic Avenger AG2 notebook is the same thing as the Clevo M72R notebook, so Hypersonic was able to get a production sample in our hands before they officially started to carry this recently released 12.1" notebook. This gave us the chance to do a long term test drive, which is something we rarely get to do in the fast paced computer industry. For the past month we have used the Hypersonic Avenger AG2 as our traveling notebook..." or "The Hypersonic Avenger AG2 starts at $1349 and the system we tested today was $1598 since we had an upgraded CPU, extra memory and faster 7,200 RPM hard drive. The Hypersonic Avenger AG2 is the fastest notebook that we have ever tested when it comes to CPU performance, which is impressive considering the Dell XPS M1710 that we compared it against was nearly $5,000 a couple of years ago. The Avenger AG2 is fast enough to make most desktop systems look slow, but this does come at a price..." Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Software) - ATI Catalyst 8.5 Analysis - XP & Vista QUOTE: "We’re not far away from going ‘out with the old and in with the new’ as the launch of the 4k series of AMD graphics card close in upon us. This month, looking through the release notes for the latest incarnation of Catalyst drivers we see that a few performance increases have been promised. Maybe AMD are hard at work on the 4k series of cards and have figured out how to extract some more power out of the aging 3k ones in the process. We’ll see if these performance increases translate to any of the games we use." 15. The VIA NanoBook was the precursor to the ASUS Eee PC but never caught on like VIA had hoped. This time they are back with a new platform, the OpenBook, that offers up features like WiMAX, HSDPA and W-CDMA 3G support, a standard 2.5" hard drive in a new [censored]y package. URL: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=562 Quote: "And that is exactly what VIA needs here: speed. The original NanoBook was first, but only in being announced, and was beat to mainstream audiences by the ASUS Eee PC and we can all see how that turned out. VIA needs to get partners on board with this SOON and get product in the channel just as quickly. I wouldn't even be opposed to seeing some VIA branded product hit the market if we could see some work done to setup a decent customer service outlet in the US. Current pricing estimates I am seeing put the OpenBook in the $400-600 price range depending on your options (HSDPA, etc)." Thanks for a post! While I didn't expect it to perform poorly, I did not anticipate that it would keep up with similar kits with tighter timings. BFG 800 Watt ES series PSU <http://www.guru3d.com/article/bfg-es-800-watt-psu-review/> Today the turn goes to BFG's for a product review, specifically their new ES line of power supplies, and guys .. this might be the black sheep of PSU's, as looking at it from a bit of distance .. it's a regular, non out of the ordinary PSU. Black, nothing modular, looks are okay though. That literally was my first impression. Then I hooked it up, 'is it switched on yet ?' .. 'yeah it is' .. I just didn't hear a thing. Pure silence. Nice sleeved and long cables was my second impression. Wow .. then I stumble into the PCIe connectors for your graphics card(s) .. four of them where two of these have additional 2-pin header making them 8-pin compatible. This editor slowly starts to smile now, then he looks at the AMPs distribution for the voltage rails 3 & 4 for 12 Volts dedicated to graphics, woah .. 36 Amps a piece, that's massive. Probably this is one of the best power supplies we ever tested here at Guru3D.com, be sure to check out the review: URL to article: http://www.guru3d.com/article/bfg-es-800-watt-psu-review/ --

  20. Hi there, We've just posted our latest review and would love it if you linked it. TIA! "You've got to hand it to Kingston Technology. Few companies offer such a wide range of memory products. Kingston designs, manufactures and distributes memory products for desktops, laptops, servers, printers, and Flash memory products for PDAs, mobile phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players. The company's flash memory range is no exception, covering everything from secure business drives to super-speedy models for enthusiasts. The company's latest product is a little different. The DataTraveler Micro Reader (64x20x10mm, 8.68g) is an all-in-one USB Flash drive and reader that can store, transfer and read content on mobile memory cards. It should be well received by the mobile community as it's a smart single-solution to navigate the plethora of devices and card formats on the market today." http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk/rev.php?id=746 _____ Christian Harris Editor/Publisher BIOS (http://www.biosmagazine.co.uk) _____

  22. Hi all, We have just published a review of *Mass Effect* for the PC. If you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/05/27/mass-effect-pc/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/05/mass-effect-pc/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"Mass Effect was already an awesome game, that much we knew. It was so good in fact that it managed to sneak its way in to our Top 10 Games of 2007. The question is though, has it got any better since then? The answer to that isn't easy, but mainly that's because there aren't that many differences between the two versions. There are some positive enhancements to consider like the new hotkey features and a smoother interface, but on the other hand these are balanced out by an awful minigame and the fact that all these changes feel insubstantial and tacked on -- where are the new quests and weapons? The deciding factor then, due to a lack of extra content, should be whether or not the game can win through on the merit of being on the PC -- does the actual input of mouse and keyboard make the game better on PC? The answer is yes, but not enough for it to make a big difference. Mass Effect is an utterly absorbing, massive and enthralling game. As soon as this review is done we're going to go play it some more and if you're a PC RPG fan who hasn't got the Xbox 360 version then this is definitely a game you'll want to pick up, but the PC version doesn't do enough to push ahead of the Xbox 360 original and in the end the two will have to settle for being equals." /* *Cheers guys! 23. Hi everyone, While many users are focused very much on performance alone, there is a significant subset of people who take great care in building silent or near-silent systems, be it for Home Theater PC use or simply to make for a quiet working or gaming environment. If you're one those people then today's review could be for you, as we take a look at the latest passively cooled graphics board to come from ASUS stable of parts, the EN9600GT Silent. With the potential for decent mid-range performance and, of course, silent running, can it prove to be a killer combination? ASUS EN9600GT Silent review "ASUS' 'V-Cool' graphics cooler used on this board is a dual-slot affair which is much tidier than the far bulkier arrangement seen on their silent GeForce 8600 GTS offering, which is a big plus straight off the bat. The large heatsink covers the entire front of what is otherwise a very standard GeForce 9600 GT design, complete with six-pin PCI Express power connector. One important point of note with regard to this cooler is that ASUS recommends ensuring that the rest of your system is relatively well ventilated, with some kind of system fan in use in your chassis. In other words, don't expect to run an entirely silent system using this graphics board, as some kind of active system cooling will most likely be required to avoid the graphics board overheating under load. In our particular case, we tested using Cooler Master's 690 chassis, with incorporates a fan which blows directly onto the graphics board as well as utilising front and rear system fans, but as long as you have some kind of airflow running through your system you should be okay." http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=573&Itemid=27 As always, a news post on your site would be hugely appreciated, and we guarantee to reciprocate by posting any news items received from yourselves. 25. A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review on the Aeneon XTune DDR3 1600 2 x 1GB Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "The Aeneon XTune DDR3 1600 2 x 1GB kit of desktop memory is not only a great looking kit of memory that you can proudly display in your rig, but the sticks are also able to perform very well. This kit of 2x1GB memory is able to operate at 1600MHz with only 1.5 volts being pushed through it. This is one of the advantages of DDR3 memory over DDR2 memory; the kits are able to perform at higher speeds with lower volts without sacrificing the timings that need to be set. The timings of this kit were, at stock, not very low to begin with, but not quite as high as I have seen in the past. When you begin to overclock the memory, you do need to loosen the timings beyond what I would like to set them at, though it does pay off with the higher clock speeds. The voltages that this kit of memory took, 1.5 volts, will help in reducing the overall temperatures inside of your case as the memory sticks are not heating up quite as warm as others."
