Background ========== PTeX is a TeX distribution with Japanese support. It is used for creating and manipulating LaTeX documents. Affected packages ================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 app-text/ptex < 3.1.10_p20071203 >= 3.1.10_p20071203 Description =========== Multiple issues were found in the teTeX 2 codebase that PTeX builds upon (GLSA 200709-17, GLSA 200711-26). PTeX also includes vulnerable code from the GD library (GLSA 200708-05), from Xpdf (GLSA 200709-12, GLSA 200711-22) and from T1Lib (GLSA 200710-12). Impact ====== Remote attackers could possibly execute arbitrary code and local attackers could possibly overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of the user running PTeX via multiple vectors, e.g. enticing users to open specially crafted files. Workaround ========== There is no known workaround at this time. 6. Hello Everyone, To commemorate the Memorial Day holiday, we've announced a new sweepstakes at HotHardware where one lucky person could win an AMD Phenom X4 9750-based system, complete with dual Diamond Multimedia Radeon HD 3850 512MB graphics cards running in CrossFire mode, and an awesome, custom painted Smooth Creations case emblazoned with the good ol' Stars and Bars! And two runners up will also win AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ processors. We'll be giving the system and other prizes away to randomly selected contributors to our on-line forum and discussion systems, but have also asked entrants to make a donation, of any size, to the Disabled American Veterans fund. Donations are NOT a requirement to win, but with Memorial Day coming up we thought this was a good opportunity to give something back to the military and were hoping you'd help us get the word out. If you think any of your readers would be interested in winning an awesome new system like this one, the link to the sweepstakes details is below... 8. Inspired by the Corsair Performance Analysis of 4GB versus 2GB of memory we figured it would be fun to see for ourselves how gaming performance is impacted by adding more system memory. We got our hands on a 2GB and a 4GB set of Corsair DOMINATOR PC2-9136C5 memory modules and set off to see what happens to the average frame rate in nine games at 1920x1200. Quote: "Our average frame rate increase of 1.6% in nine games was slightly higher than the 1.1% shown by Corsair in the three games they tested, but our test system was a little newer and we were running Vista SP1. Something else that we noted while running the benchmarks is that game loading times were also significantly enhanced by installing 4GB of system memory. While load times was not the focus of this article we noted that Crysis v1.21 loaded 54.1% faster (14.28s versus 22.00s) on the initial level load. After the level was loaded and then restarted (as if one died and started over) the load times were within a hundredth of a second..." 9. DH Review: Kingston DT 400 & OCZ Rally2 Turbo _____ <http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=564> Read The Review Here The DT400 is a well made Flash Drive with very good read performance but its main strength is the bundled software and the functionality which it provides. Whether it is the MigoSync application which is ideal for office and remote office use or the SecureTraveler which means that the consumers data is protected the drive has real world benefits especially for those prone to loosing flash drives with sensitive data on them. Whilst the read performance of the DT400 is not as good as OCZ it should be taken into consideration that the Kingston model is still faster than most generic USB storage and as well as being ReadyBoost Certified is backed by a five year warranty. 13. Badia Printools Now Available for Adobe InDesign CS3 - Published on 05/12/08 Badia Software announces the release of Badia Printools 5.0 for Adobe InDesign CS3. The popular add-on for QuarkXPress since 1999, is now also available for Adobe InDesign CS3. Printools helps prepress and printing professionals produce automated and error-free output by combining two of its most powerful features: batch printing and preflighting. Toronto, Canada (May 12, 2008) - Badia Software announces the release of Badia Printools 5.0 for Adobe InDesign CS3. The popular add-on for QuarkXPress since 1999, is now also available for Adobe InDesign CS3. Printools helps prepress and printing professionals produce automated and error-free output by combining two of its most powerful features: batch printing and preflighting. Printools allows users of InDesign CS3 to: * Batch print up to 5000 documents with the same print settings. Printing can be performed to a printer queue or to disk. * Preflight documents before printing. This tool quickly checks for common errors that could lead to time and material waste, such as broken links or missing fonts. When problems are found, the user can decide whether to skip the document, stop the printing process or continue printing. * Rename the output stream without altering the document or file name. Print renaming is useful for identifying the document during the output stage, regardless of the actual document name. It is also helpful in keeping track of revisions or when printing individual pages for imposition. * Print to file as PostScript or PDF. Instead of sending directly to the printer, users can choose to save the printout to file in any of these formats. When combined with Batch Printing, thousands of files can be generated in one single step. In addition, Printools for InDesign CS3 comes with a new Print Log window that shows in real time which files are being printed, and allows for a complete analysis of the output and preflight processes. System Requirements: Badia Printools 5.0 requires Adobe InDesign CS3, and Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard. Printools is also available for QuarkXPress 4, 5, 6 and 7. Pricing and Availability: Badia Printools for InDesign CS3 is priced at $119.99 USD per license. Volume discounts are also available. Swansea, UK - Reinvented Software announced the release of Together 2.1 for Mac OS X Leopard today. Together is a file organization application for storing, previewing, editing and searching all kinds of files. Version 2.1 introduces many new features such as .Mac sync, Favorites and Quick Look previews for its Shelf, saving web pages as PDFs and AppleScript support, plus improvements for Smart Groups, tagging, Spotlight integration, importing and a more customizable user interface. Together 2.1 can now sync with .Mac, allowing members to access their library on multiple Macs. Together's Shelf, a system-wide library browser that lives on the side of the screen, includes a new Favorites section for quick access to items and can now show Quick Look previews of items. Together's innovative tag browser includes more control for system tags and the Library can be customized with a choice of icons sizes for items and groups and custom group icons. Version 2.1 makes importing easier with a global import hot key and web browser bookmarklets, and it can import tags from files' Spotlight comments. Also, Together can now show options when importing, so items can be tagged, rated, and labeled without leaving the current application. Together can edit or preview many different file formats, include text documents, PDF files, images, movies, web archives and bookmarks, and will use Quick Look to generate previews for everything else. Version 2.1 adds the ability to generate PDF files from web pages which, unlike those created through printing, retain the original page's appearance with background images and no pagination. Together requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later, and is available from the Reinvented Software web site as a 15-day trial that can be unlocked upon purchase. 18. Virtually silent! If you are looking for a silent PSU with good voltage regulation, excellent efficiency, and high-end video card support; this PSU deserves a very close look. URL: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=558 Quote: "The new Modu82+ and Pro82+ power supplies from Enermax were designed to deliver stable outputs with high efficiency and minimal noise. In fact the Modu82+ and Pro82+ power supplies are some of the first to be certified under the new 80 Plus Bronze classification to be at least 82% efficient at 20% and 100% of the rated output and at least 85% efficient at 50% of the rated output power. And as you will see later on, the Modu82+ 625W unit we have in for review proved to be the quietest power supply we have tested to date!" Thanks for a post! 19. Good Morning Everyone, EXTREME Overclocking has just posted an article on Building a Stratum-1 GPS Based NTP Server with a Soekris net4501. Article URL: http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/articles/howto/Building_S1_NTP_Server_1.html Article Quote: Typical GPS based NTP server appliances sell for hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Most have lots of features that justify that cost, such as an ovenized crystal oscillator (or even a rubidium standard), additional frequency outputs, custom web interface, commercial support, etc. Building your own basic NTP server (like in this article) can be done on the cheap for well under $200, and for all practical purposes gives just as good time over a network. ----------------------------
  20. Hello fellow editors! Tech ARP ( http://www.techarp.com/ <http://www.techarp.com/>'>http://www.techarp.com/> ) has just posted the ED#89 : My Saitek Eclipse Goes Kamikaze! Quote - It was just another day when I left my PC running overnight to download files while I hit the AC (air-conditioner) and went to bed. However, when I took a look at the PC the next morning, I realized that a few keys on my Saitek Eclipse keyboard were not functioning. How odd! I had never dismantled a keyboard before. Nevertheless, I went ahead and took it apart. No beatles were found stuck under the keys and the silicone layer looked fine. Gently peeling off the silicone layer revealed the "sensor" layer. Everything looked fine at first sight, but when I took a closer look... Here's a quote from the editorial :- "...the Dash/Underscore key, the Equal/Plus key, the F9 to F12 keys, the PrtScrn key, the Scroll Lock key, the Pause/Break key, the Insert and Delete keys, the Home key, the Page Up and Page Down keys, the End key, the numeric 7, 8, and 9 keys, the NumPlus key, the Volume Up and Volume Down keys as well as the Right Click key are all dead. That's a total of 22 keys." 22. Hey Everyone, This email is to announce Tomboy 0.11.0, the first development release in the 0.11.x series. Packagers take note: we've rewritten our printing code to use Gtk.Print, so we've added a mono-cairo dependency and dropped our libgnomeprint* dependencies. Printing is missing a few features right now, but you can expect it will be ready before the final 0.12.0 release (sooner if somebody sends a patch!). Tomboy is a simple personal note-taking application designed to be unobtrusive and friendly, while supporting inter-note-links similar to a WikiWikiWeb to help you organize your notes and ideas. It can run either as a GNOME panel applet or a notification tray icon. Tomboy's Website: http://www.gnome.org/projects/tomboy Tomboy's Wiki: http://live.gnome.org/Tomboy * Road Map: http://live.gnome.org/Tomboy/RoadMap * Brainstorming: http://live.gnome.org/Tomboy/PlaceForNewIdeas Tomboy is available at: http://download.gnome.org/sources/tomboy/0.11/tomboy-0.11.0.tar.gz md5sum: 8d5129554a9675fe0cc4d636bf75b097 size: 4.3M http://download.gnome.org/sources/tomboy/0.11/tomboy-0.11.0.tar.bz2 md5sum: a6e37086ec7e797de782a5b957b517f3 size: 3.4M This release includes the following: Version 0.11.0 * Update printing to use Gtk.Print (#512369, John Anderson).
