Hi all, We have just published a review of *Corsair's* *VX550W power supply* - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/05/06/corsair-vx550w-power-supply/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/05/corsair-vx550w-power-supply/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"Continually, we find ourselves looking at great Corsair PSUs -- the HX, the TX and now the VX have all performed fantastically. The VX550W does exactly what it says on the tin and even though our model dropped a fraction below 80 percent load under significant 3.3V and 5V stress, it's very unlikely they'll ever hit these sorts of values in a real PC. Where it matters the Corsair VX550W works exceptionally well, hitting upwards of 85 percent efficiency throughout the rest of the tests. We'd be torn between the significant benefits of buying modular, versus the extra cost and slightly lower power. I used the VX550W in my own home theatre PC for a few months prior to this review and it was nothing but fantastic. In this instance, cable management didn't matter since there was a large enough case that was designed just to be super-low noise: in that respect it worked perfectly. I even had to install an extra cathode it to tell if the system was on or off, simply because it was //that quiet I couldn't hear it unless my head was all of two inches away. I had to swap it out for the Thermaltake Toughpower Q-Fan 650W we reviewed before the Corsair and while that quotes just 17dB you'd be very hard pushed to tell them apart. I'd still prefer to use the Corsair VX550W simply because the cables are better designed (4+4-pin EPS 12V instead of an 8-pin with a 4-pin tail), even though it's not modular. For any Intel P35/P45 or AMD 770X, 780G based PC with mainstream components the VX550W should absolutely suffice, but it's not //the answer for everyone -- there are a lot more ifs and buts than when we looked at the TX750W. If you do decide to buy a VX550W though, you won't be disappointed." / **Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net

Hi! ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe is based on the upcoming Intel P45 chipset. You may have seen a number of previews around the web, but what they all have in common is that the boards have been dead. Today we have one of the first functional P45 motherboards in the world. We took it into the lab and ran some tests to see how it stands up to the predecessors, and what makes it worthy of the Deluxe suffix. Beside the raw benchmarks, we've also done some quick overclocking tests and take a peek at ASUS' new Memory OC Charge technology. Link:http://www.nordichardware.com/Articles/?skrivelse=534 Quote:"In this review, we will take a closer look at ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe, which is based on Intel's P45 chipset. The difference in performance between the P35 and its precursor P965 was minimal; the question is whether the P45 has any additional performance advantages. An important difference between P35 and P45 is that the latter is made using the 65nm manufacturing process, while the former was made with the 90nm process." News Item: Linux server provisioning aided by LinMin Bare Metal
news posted a topic in Upcoming News
Hello, Please consider the following news item for inclusion on your site. Thank you very much! Regards, Sharon Smith linuxpr ( -at -) yahoo.com Linux server provisioning aided by LinMin Bare Metal Megan Santosus from SearchEnterpriseLinux.com writes about a user's experience with LinMin. "Brian McArthur, the director of technology at Advantage Professionals, a managed services provider in Charlotte, N.C., wanted a better way to perform bare-metal installations on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server. He and his engineering staff used a pre-boot execution environment or PXE Boot server and the kick-start process for automating Linux installations. While the approach is fairly common, McArthur said, "It was a bit cumbersome and never really worked exactly as we needed." For one thing, the process was not automated, requiring staff to manually assign roles to servers—a time-consuming and inefficient process. McArthur set out to find a more automated approach to bare-metal server provisioning to quickly facilitate the addition of new servers running the CentOSdistribution of Linux in his company's data center. McArthur went online, conducted a search and came across LinMin Corp., a Redwood City, Calif.-based systems management startup that focuses on Linux administration and management. McArthur downloaded a demo of the company's product, LinMin Bare Metal Provisioningand within hours realized he had found the right tool." AMD Phenom X3 processor family performance http://www.techspot.com/review/95-amd-phenom-x3-performance/ The latest processor series from AMD is a little unusual as it makes use of not one, two, or even four cores, but rather three! That's right, the new Phenom X3 carries an unusual core configuration, and I guess the question most of you are probably asking yourselves (as we did) is why? The most reasonable explanation is that this still allows AMD to sell Phenom X4 processors with a defective core, minimizing their loss. Second, it gives some leverage for AMD to compete with Intel's dual-core processors, being able to pull the "additional core" card.

ECS GF8200A black edition mainboard review <http://www.guru3d.com/article/ecs-gf8200a-black-edition-mainboard-review/>'>http://www.guru3d.com/article/ecs-gf8200a-black-edition-mainboard-review/> It never ceases to amaze me how much fun the more budget oriented products can be. NVIDIA recently released their GF8200 based mainboards. So why not grab a Phenom processor, some memory and the ECS GF8200A mainboard and see where we end up? And I'll tell you in advance ... for this kind of money, this little mainboard again is amazing for the price. See, this mainboard comes with Hybrid graphics, (integrated GeForce 8200), VGA output, HDMI output, HD audio integrated, Gigabit Ethernet, PCI-Express 2.0, Serial ATA (RAID 0,1,10) DDR2 memory up-to 1066 MHz and all that for a price hovering at roughly 70 bucks! That's just electrifying. Say you want to build a HTPC capable of decoding 1080P Blu-Ray. Well, purchase this mainboard, slap some memory on it and get a budget processor. Because the integrated graphics core will handle the HDMI and even media VC-1/h.264 decoding for you (Blu-ray / HD-DVD). This is just a very cheap alternative. It will also handle six 3Gb/s SATA drives, 12 USB ports and Gigabit Ethernet. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Casing & Cooling) - ThermoLab Micro Silencer CPU Cooler QUOTE: "Today’s product comes to us form a South Korean company called ThermoLab. Even though the company has been doing business since 2003, the chances of many readers already knowing the company are slim. This is mainly due to the types of products the company has been producing until now. While most enthusiasts are looking for the largest heatsink they can fit in their system, many mainstream and server users are looking to keep their cases small. Small cases require smaller components, and believe it or not, smaller is getting to be a big deal." Hello Again, Futurelooks needs no stinkin' WiFi with these... Corinex GameNet Powerline Networking Kit Review Corinex is a company that specializes in something called powerline technology. In a nutshell, this technology takes advantage of the pre-existing electrical wiring in your home (or any building) to deliver a full Internet experience just about anywhere you have a wall outlet. The key advantage of this method over a wireless connection is that it cannot be blocked by walls, floors, or ceilings. It doesn’t matter if you live in a concrete jungle; it’ll still work. Hello News Partner: Benchmark Reviews has released a new article which your readers might enjoy. We would be grateful if you would please share it with them. TITLE: NZXT Alpha Classical Series Mid-Tower Case ( -at -) Benchmark Reviews DESCRIPTION: Fortunately, since the PC Enclosure market is roughly organized into three segments; entry/OEM level, mid-range and performance/enthusiast, all you need to do to begin your case search, is to figure out which segment of the market fits your systems needs and zero your search down to that particular segment. Someone looking to spend between $25.00-$75.00 on their future system's enclosure need not waste their time exploring the expensive performance/enthusiast segment of the market, and so forth. Well, if part of your criteria is that you are on a budget or a first time builder, then usually the place to start is at the entry and budget mid-range levels. Once there, while parusing the current multitude of styles and designs, your eye would almost certainly be caught by the entry-to-mid-range NZXT offering: the ALPHA. The first time you see it, you'll think, "I bet that's what Darth Vader's desktop looks like." Today at Benchmark Reviews, we're going to find out if NZXT's latest in their Classic series line is just another....pretty face? Volitans Software Announces SMART Utility 1.2 - Published on 05/05/08 Volitans software today announces SMART Utility 1.2, a significant update to the hard drive diagnostic scanning application. The new features include more readable attribute names, displaying the model family, sending additional information to the smartctl engine, and French localization. SMART Utility is an application to scan the internal hardware diagnostics system of hard drives. Lancaster, Pennsylvania - Volitans software today announces SMART Utility 1.2, a significant update to the hard drive diagnostic scanning application. The new features include more readable attribute names, displaying the model family, sending additional information to the smartctl engine, and French localization. Other smaller features and minor bug fixes are included as well. SMART Utility is an application to scan the internal hardware diagnostics system of hard drives SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) is a system built into hard drives by their manufacturers to report on various measurements (called attributes) of a hard drive's operation. The attributes can be used to detect when a hard drive is having mechanical or electrical problems, and can indicate when the hard drive is failing. SMART Utility can read and display these attributes. This allows time to hopefully backup, and then replace the drive. SMART Utility is different from other drive utilities, such as Disk Utility, which only read the overall SMART Status. SMART Utility not only displays the individual attributes to see their status and information, but it also uses an internal algorithm based on those attributes to detect drives failing before SMART indicates it has failed. This pre-fail detection can save precious data before SMART has determined that the drive has failed. And, while the raw information can be viewed on the command line with smartmontools (which is what SMART Utility is based on), SMART Utility presents it in an easy to read format, as well as running its internal pre-fail algorithm. Release notes for Version 1.2: * Added support for localization (French currently - thanks to Ronald Leroux, others wanted) * Added support for model family in Drive Information window * Added "Enter smartctl options" to send extra options to the smartctl engine for debugging * Added message for empty log when sending log, with option to enable debug messages, rescan, and send log * Added text box to enter message when sending log * Added error message if there was a problem sending the log * Added support for Unsanity's Smart Crash Reports (completely optional) * Attribute names are now more human readable * Fixed some more memory leaks * Fixed some spelling mistakes * Fixed a small bug in outputting MIN/MAX temperature to log * Fixed a few interface inconsistencies and errors * Updated smartctl engine to 5.38 final providing more fixes and recognizes drives Features: * Displays all supported drives and their partitions * Displays easy to read overall SMART status with color coded text * Displays important information in the main window, such as drive model, capacity, power on hours, temperature, bad sector counts, and error counts and types * Displays more detailed information in separate windows, including capabilities, all available attributes, and the past five errors * Supports scanning individual RAID drives in addition to non-RAIDed drives * Supports logging all information to a log file for verifying SMART data * Supports Mac OS X 10.4 or later (including Server) and both PowerPC and Intel Macs Pricing and Availability: SMART Utility is available in two licenses: a 10 copy license for $20, and a 50 copy license for $100 USD. It can be purchased online or in an innovative way: within SMART Utility itself through its embedded web store. A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review of the Thermaltake BlacX Hard Drive Docking Station Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "Well, I must say I quite like the Thermaltake BlacX Hard Drive Docking Station. Transfer speeds were the same or better than the two traditional style enclosures that it was compared to. The ability to hot swap not only 3.5" hard drives, but 2.5" notebook drives as well, makes this unit a must-have for a computer enthusiast. Most enclosures are built for a certain size drive and take some work swapping them out, but with the Thermaltake BlacX, you just push the eject button and place a new drive into the docking station. This is especially good for transferring files from an old drive to an upgraded one with ease. One thing I liked is the fact that there are no fans, meaning it is very quiet when in use." Hardware Canucks is pleased to present our review of the CoolIT PURE CPU cooler in which we test this product on both dual and quad core procesors. Quote: In the end the CoolIT PURE is not for everyone. Anyone who thinks just because a CPU cooling solution is water based means that “monster overclocks†are around the corner will be disappointed with it. However, anyone who wants to a very quiet, well mannered cooling system will be more than pleased with the PURE’s cooling capabilities, even if you intend on using a hot running quad core CPU. Dear Media friends, APH Networks has published a new review that your readers might enjoy. A post in your site's news section would be greatly appreciated! * Title: Gigabyte GeForce 8800GT TurboForce 512MB ( -at -) APH Networks * Description: While NVIDIA's 65nm G92 core is an optimized derivative of NVIDIA's original 90nm G80 core to a certain extent, cards based on the G92 like the 8800GT and 8800GTS 512MB is nothing but a success amongst performance enthusiasts -- and there's a good reason why. Our previous review of the Asus 8800GT TOP back in January showed that, in general, the 8800GT is not only a very capable card in terms of 3D performance and comes at a great price depending on the board manufacturer and retailer you are purchasing from, but are also very power efficient for what it offers. Last month, we got another variation of the 8800GT for our review -- this time, from Gigabyte. The Gigabyte GeForce 8800GT TurboForce 512MB is not just about great performance, however. Utilizing a shorter, unique signature Gigabyte-blue non-reference PCB, along with a Zalman copper cooler, combined with Gigabyte's custom overclocking and overvolting software to squeeze the heck out of this card, how does it step up against the rest? Let's check this card out and run it through our set of benchmarks. And of course -- overclocking. * Link: http://aphnetworks.com/reviews/gigabyte_geforce_8800gt_turboforce_512mb * Image: http://aphnetworks.com/review/gigabyte_geforce_8800gt_turboforce_512mb/010.JPG

Background ========== The Horde Application Framework is a general-purpose web application framework written in PHP, providing classes for handling preferences, compression, browser detection, connection tracking, MIME and more. Affected packages ================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 www-apps/horde < 3.1.7 >= 3.1.7 2 www-apps/horde-groupware < 1.0.5 >= 1.0.5 3 www-apps/horde-kronolith < 2.1.7 >= 2.1.7 4 www-apps/horde-mnemo < 2.1.2 >= 2.1.2 5 www-apps/horde-nag < 2.1.4 >= 2.1.4 6 www-apps/horde-webmail < 1.0.6 >= 1.0.6 ------------------------------------------------------------------- 6 affected packages on all of their supported architectures. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Description =========== Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in the Horde Application Framework: * David Collins, Patrick Pelanne and the HostGator.com LLC support team discovered that the theme preference page does not sanitize POST variables for several options, allowing the insertion of NULL bytes and ".." sequences (CVE-2008-1284). * An error exists in the Horde API allowing users to bypass security restrictions. Impact ====== The first vulnerability can be exploited by a remote attacker to read arbitrary files and by remote authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary files. The second vulnerability can be exploited by authenticated remote attackers to perform restricted operations. Workaround ========== There is no known workaround at this time. Resolution ========== All Horde Application Framework users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=www-apps/horde-3.1.7" All horde-groupware users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=www-apps/horde-groupware-1.0.5" All horde-kronolith users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=www-apps/horde-kronolith-2.1.7" All horde-mnemo users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=www-apps/horde-mnemo-2.1.2" All horde-nag users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=www-apps/horde-nag-2.1.4" All horde-webmail users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=www-apps/horde-webmail-1.0.6" References ========== [ 1 ] CVE-2008-1284 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-1284 Availability ============ This GLSA and any updates to it are available for viewing at the Gentoo Security Website: http://security.gentoo.org/glsa/glsa-200805-01.xml Concerns? ========= Security is a primary focus of Gentoo Linux and ensuring the confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost importance to us.
