  1. Thermolab Micro Silencer TLI-S Heatsink Reviewed on Frostytech! "In this review Frostytech will be testing a low profile Intel socket 775 heatsink which could be ideal for 2U sized server chassis, small formfactor PCs and other media center microATX-style cases which are seriously height limited. The Thermolab Micro Silencer TLI-S heatsink uses a simple swagged aluminum fin and heatpipe construction, weighs a feathery 276 grams and comes with a pre-applied patch of 8 W/mK rated gray thermal interface material." 2. The Fedora Unity Project is proud to announce the release of new ISO Re-Spins (DVD and CD Sets) of Fedora 8. These Re-Spin ISOs are based on the officially released Fedora 8 installation media and include all updates released as of May 1st, 2008. The ISO images are available for i386, x86_64 and PPC architectures via Jigdo and Torrent starting Monday, May 5th, 2008. Go to http://spins.fedoraunity.org/spins to get the bits! == CD Media Included == We have included CD Image sets for those in the Fedora community that do not have DVD drives or burners available. == Bugs solved in this Re-Spin == With this particular Re-Spin, fixes for the following bugs are included, like on our last Fedora 8 Re-Spin releases[1,2]: - #372011, "depsolve hang in F7 to F8 upgrade" We have incorporated the updates image made by Jeremy Katz (comment #11 in the bug), and we have verified that a full Fedora 7 installation upgrades to Fedora 8 without issues. - #367731, "anaconda fails on Via VPSD motherboard" On i586 hardware, the installation media wouldn't boot and thus renders itself unusable. We have backported the fix for this issue from anaconda development to the Fedora 8 stock anaconda, as anaconda is not updated during a release. - #369611, "yum upgrade with selinux-policy-strict installed fails" A dependency problem in selinux-policy-strict during upgrades is resolved in an updated selinux-policy-strict package, which is included in the Re-Spin - #404601, "anaconda crashes on 'cdrom' line in kickstart" Updates to pykickstart incorporated in the rebuilt installer resolve this issue. - #420281, Cannot find kickstart file during unattended installation The kickstart file name searched for after booting from CD or DVD with option "linux ks" and using a dhcp and nfs server is wrong. == Attention: Changes in this Re-Spin == Also, we would like to let you know that NetworkManager is now installed by default, and for people doing minimal installations; this service will need to be disabled before the network starts to work. == Thanks to == We would like to give a special thanks to the following for testing this Re-Spin: - Harley-D Dana Hoffman Jr - zcat Jason Farrell - iWolf Jeffrey Tadlock - vwbusguy- Scott Williams - baard1973 S.A. Hartsuiker - Southern_Gentleman Ben Williams - nirik Kevin Fenzi - kanarip Jeroen van Meeuwen == Testing Results == A full test matrix can be found at http://spins.fedoraunity.org/Members/Southern_Gentleman/20080501f8testmatrix A full list of bugs, packages and changelogs that have been updated in this Re-Spin can be reviewed on http://spins.fedoraunity.org/changelogs/20080501/ == Previous Re-Spin (20080331) will expire == Due to limited resources, this spin will immediately obsolete 20080331, which will be deleted from our mirrors in the next few days. Fedora Unity has taken up the Re-Spin task to provide the community with the chance to install Fedora with recent updates already included. These updates might otherwise comprise more than 1.33GiB of downloads for a full install. This is a community project, for and by the community. You can contribute to the community by joining our test process. Go to http://spins.fedoraunity.org/spins to get the bits! If you are interested in helping with the testing or mirroring efforts, please contact the Fedora Unity team. 6. While the average PC enthusiast may gawk endlessly over pages of reviews of high-end power-hungry graphics cards, jaw-slackened by the frame rates and 3DMark score that he or she might find there, at the end of the month it is the low to mid-range card that is purchased more often than not in the retail sector. Price typically is a primary consideration, but it's not the only concern. Availability, compatibility, and other issues factor in to a buyers decision as well. Today we take a look at Diamond's lower cost, mainstream Radeon HD 3650 that increases total on-board memory to 1GB, but in doing so, uses lower cost, slower GDDR2 chips. In the pages ahead, we'll aim to find out if additional on-board memory really impacts performance more so than a smaller footprint of faster GDDR3 memory. The answer may definitely surprise you... It supports encryption, imports and exports, and more. This release includes important bug fixes. Portland, Oregon - Dejal Systems, LLC today announced the immediate availability of Dejal Caboodle 1.1.4, a useful application to collect text, images, and other content. Everyone comes across information that they want to refer to later. Maybe gifts you've received or sent, product serial numbers, recipes, directions to someone's house, a photo of your pet, or anything else. Caboodle is a tool to help store and organize such varied bits of information. You can arrange the items in an outline-like hierarchy, and include both structured fields and free-form text and pictures in each entry, along with web links, lists, tables, PDFs, and any other kind of file as attachments. Caboodle is elegantly simple, but includes some innovative and useful features. Every entry can include child entries. When you create a new entry within an existing one, the custom fields are inherited, allowing quickly creating content in an organized fashion. But you can also add or remove custom fields independently for each entry. Entries can be encrypted to hide your most sensitive information. They can also be searched, and the Services menu is supported to quickly add or output an entry. This bug-fix release fixes some issues with spell checking, creating child entries, exporting, and more. 10. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Visual) - MSI GeForce 9600GT 1GB OC Graphics Card QUOTE: "We saw MSI mix it up just the other week with the 9600GT by overclocking it and going down the aftermarket cooler route. Aesthetically speaking, the card really didn’t do a lot for us, but as we dived deeper into the testing of the card we became pleasantly surprised by the performance the cooler offered. The latest 9600GT variant from MSI sports the same cooler along with an extra 512MB of GDDR3, giving us a grand total of 1GB. The card also carries with it the same overclock we saw on the 512MB model which should aid in getting some extra performance over stock clocked offerings." 12. The EVGA UV Plus+ allows you to connect additional monitors to your notebook or desktop PC through a USB connection rather than requiring you to install another graphics card. Can this new device from one of our favorite video card vendors help you out of a virtual desktop space deficiency? URL: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=555&type=expert Quote: "I tested the UV Plus+ out for several hours on this configuration as well as on another desktop system and did not run into any problems. The secondary display was always correctly recognized and easily configured. The speed of the display was JUST noticeably slower than the primary display attached to the video card but even though I could notice it if I tried, it did not affect my productivity at all. I ran Vista on both test systems, one 32-bit and one 64-bit, without seeing any problems with the Aero interface that of course requires 3D acceleration. The GPU was more than capable of handling the necessary processing for both displays." Thanks for a post! Ryan Shrout Owner - PC Perspective rshrout ( -at -) pcper.com

  15. Hi, It's Kristofer from DragonSteelMods, and I have a new review today that I think your readers might find interesting. Title: US Exclusive: Noctua NH-C12P CPU Cooler Review ( -at -) DragonSteelMods Review Link: http://www.dragonsteelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7370&Itemid=38 Review Snipit: "Today for review I've got something special, something that no one on this side of the ocean has yet actually, the Noctua NH-C12P CPU cooler. Noctua has honored us with the privilege of being their US launch partner for their new CPU cooler. The C12P continues Noctua's tradition of striving for performance without sacrificing quality along the way. The C12P is like no other Noctua designed cooler to date, and not much like any other CPU cooler I've even seen actually. It incorporates six heatpipes into a short, fat style body that Noctua calls a 'C-Type' design with airflow gaps that allow cooling of the motherboard components as well. This design allows for a much higher compatibility with more motherboards and PC case configurations, where a tall CPU cooler won't fit the NH-C12P will fit easily. The NH-C12P uses Noctua's own NF-P12 120mm fan for cooling so you know it will be quiet as well. The Noctua NH-C12P is possibly the best cooler on the market today, from my testing and re-testing it beats all others I have for comparison, and that includes names like Thermalright, Scythe, Zalman, and OCZ. I was so surprised by the results of my testing that I re-did the testing all over again to be sure of my results, and they were the same, the NH-C12P is the new king of CPU coolers... 16. The GeForce 8800 GT 256MB card has been around since November 2007 and now, six months later some very interesting versions of this card are appearing on the market. The ECS N8800GT-256MX is one of these cards! It appears that ECS has placed 512MB of GDDR3 memory on the N8800GT-256MX, but only enabled 256MB of the graphics memory through the BIOS. Once a quick BIOS flash is performed on the card it turned into a GeForce 8800 GT 512MB graphics card for the price of a 256MB card! Quote: "The ECS N8800GT 256MB packs in double the memory with an available BIOS update giving you the performance of a true 8800 GT 512MB. The extra memory along with a nearly silent heat sink/fan combo and a $169 price tag assures it to be a great success!" Save all clips through restarts. Tools to act on clip data. Never lose a clip again. Fairfield, Iowa - CopyPaste is the original multiple clip utility for the Mac. CopyPaste has been massively popular since its first release. What has made it so widely appreciated? Usefulness. CopyPaste magnifies and multiplies the usefulness of the humble clipboard. One of the revolutionary features that came with the Mac in 1984 was the unique ability to select text or pictures, etc, then copy that data into a clipboard, to hold that content temporarily and then paste it in the same application or a different one. The clipboard was used to transfer all kinds of info between programs on the Mac, and later this feature was imitated in many other operating systems. A few years later CopyPaste was the first application to add multiple clipboards. This meant that more data could be moved in less time. CopyPaste also allowed these multiple clipboards to be displayed, edited, archived and saved through restarts. CopyPaste revealed the untapped potential of the Mac clipboard. The latest incarnation of CopyPaste has those same underlying abilities, but with this latest version unveiled in 2008 (CopyPaste Pro) a new instantly available window (like the Apple application switcher) that lets you navigate through the Clip History and Clip Archive with a speed and ease that is again as revolutionary as the first version of CopyPaste. An editor called Bean is now part of the CopyPaste Pro ecology. Bean allows you to edit clipboards. It is profoundly simple and extremely powerful. CopyPaste Pro Features: * Multiple (unlimited depending on memory) clipboards available by hotkey, menu, contextual menu and clip browser. * Save all clipboards thru restarts. Never lose an edit again. This alone is a savior. * Clip History maintains a stack of cuts or copies and even drags. * Clip Editor (Bean) allows immediate editing of any clip and also is an excellent word processor. * Clip Archives to keep available info you use repeatedly * The Clip Browser allow viewing the contents of any clipboard. * Drag images from Safari directly into the clip history * Clip Tools to act on clipboard data in dozens of useful ways that save time like: - Email extractor which grabs email addresses from large amounts of text - Url extractor grabs url's from large chunks of text and many others * Drag and drop any clip in the clip browser and to/from applications * Contextual menus to give easy access to the clipboards from anywhere * With the clip editor open text, PDF, RTF, HTML, Apple Archive and many other file types * Easy ways to organize and make available all the clipboard data for reuse. * Many more features built in and more coming.... CopyPaste has been available for over 10 years. Users of those earlier version (CopyPaste+yType, CopyPaste-X, CopyPaste Classic) may be interested in the changes from those earlier versions. * Universal Binary. Native on Intel and PowerPC, perfect for Mac OS Tiger (10.4), Leopard (10.5) and beyond. * Much faster; especially on Intel Macs and in Leopard. * Rewritten in Cocoa and Objective C, to access the latest Mac OS X features for fast and rock-solid development and upgrades. * The clip editor (called Bean) is now a powerful word processor. * Many new ways to view, browse, edit and act on clips. * New easier and simpler interface that follows the look and feel of Apple's Dock and Application Switcher. It costs nothing to try it out and CopyPaste Pro will immediately save you time and energy. The 0.2 release of marks an important milestone of Alarm Clock development. The name has been changed from Alarm Applet to the more human friendly Alarm Clock. New Features: -------------------- MULTIPLE ALARMS Alarm Clock now supports multiple alarms running simultaneously. ALARM TYPES Alarm Clock now distinguishes between two types of alarms: Clocks and Timers. The default type, Clock, will trigger at a specific time of day. The Timer will trigger after a specified amount of hours, minutes and seconds. REPEATED ALARMS Alarm Clock will now allow you to specify at what days an alarm should trigger. No need to re-activate the alarm before you go to sleep any more! SNOOZE An alarm or timer can now be snoozed for a specified number of minutes. This only applies for alarms which uses sound notification. Clicking the applet will snooze all running alarms. To clear all alarms, right click the applet and choose "Clear alarms". 21. Hi fellow News Poster, Tech- Reviews has just submitted another review: Title: Assassin's Creed Xbox 360 Review Thumbnail: http://www.tech-reviews.co.uk//images/reviews/creed/thumb.gif Briefing: Assassin's Creed was released on Xbox 360 in November 2007. It's a third person stealth game in which you play as the main character, Desmond Miles. The main objective of the game is to complete nine assassinations. This game was released to a lot of hype, however, is this so called 'Xbox Classis' actually any good? Well read the great review at Tech-Reviews.co.uk to find out more. 22. Hi all, We have just published a review of *Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut* for the PC - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/05/05/assassin-s-creed-director-s-cut/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/05/assassin-s-creed-director-s-cut/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"Viewed from one angle Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut is honestly a little disappointing. The PC version doesn't really add anything all that new, doesn't make the most of the platform and carries over many of the flaws of the original game. The //Director's Cut doesn't offer any new content except for the new investigations, and these aren't really all that great. / /But the game is still quite good. The thing we really like about //Assassin's Creed is how good it is for creating player stories. The open sandbox style means that players can make their own tales in a way that makes the game great to talk about. There was the time I killed the Mad Doctor of Acre by climbing some scaffolding, assassinating an archer, and climbing down in to the courtyard of the hospital. I leapt from a nearby chandelier and plunged a knife into his throat, escaping through alleyways with the aid of some vigilantes and scholars. It's wonderful and deliciously emergent, going a long way to address complaints of repetitiveness. In a nutshell, the verdict lies in a balance of these two opposing viewpoints. Is / /Assassin's Creed good? Undoubtedly -- but the //Director's Cut isn't a massive improvement over the original. You may well love the new version more than the original, like we do, but the route of that preference won't be because the game is markedly better on PC. It'll be because your PC is markedly better than a console." /* *Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net
  23. Today we look at the Foxconn 9800GTX Extreme OC. SNIP: Bjorn3D has previously reviewed the performance difference of the stock 9800GTX versus various high-end and mainstream graphic cards: namely the 8 series cards (review). We are fortunate to receive the Foxconn GeForce 9800 GTX Extreme OC card which features clock speed of 780/1900/2360 (core/shader/memory) as opposed to the reference speed of 675/1688/2200. Today, we will put this card against other mid-range graphic cards ranging from the last generation G80 to current generation G92 cards and even the HD card from AMD. http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1262 A post on your site would be great if you can. 24. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Miscellaneous) - Being Cut Off From The Outside World QUOTE: "After a two week hiatus thanks to a house move, I’m back with my editorials; and while everything has been pretty smooth with the move, the one thing that hasn’t has probably been the most important. I’ve moved into a new place which hasn’t actually got a phone line running to it. That’s okay, but I assume the telco company I was dealing with knew what they were doing when they booked a tech to come out and hook my line up. On the first appointment, he decided not to show up. The same thing happened with the second one." In those six short years, they have come up with some remarkably innovative designs for economy motherboards. Today I will be looking at the ASRock Penryn 1600SLIX3-WiFi motherboard. ASRock has taken the nVidia 680i SLI chipset, given it the capability of running the new Core 2 Extreme 1600mHz FSB processors, added WiFi, and placed that in an economy-minded board."
