  1. Hi News Poster Hardwareoverclock Austria has reviewed DFI's X38 mainboard LANParty DK X38-T2R. The most important themes in the review are the Bios and the overclocking features. 2. SilenX iXtrema IXC-120HA2 Heatsink Review "Looking for a new heatsink that works on either Intel or AMD processors? Good, say 'hello' to one of the new class of direct heatpipe contact heatsinks hitting the streets - the SilenX iXtrema IXC-120HA2. Like the nearly identical Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer model, the SilenX iXtrema IXC-120HA2 heatsink features exposed heatpipes on the bottom which give it a serious advantage in the thermal tests." 3. Coolermaster Hyper Z600 Passive Heatsink Review "The Coolermaster Hyper Z600 heatsink is a novel passive CPU heatsink for today's dual core processors. Its' 'star' shape, widely spaced aluminum fins and prodigious number of silvery copper heatpipes allow it to work without the benefit of a fan, albeit within specific thermal limits. As far as passive cooling goes (and I mean true passive cooling without any fan blowing toward it) Frostytech threw caution to the wind and stressed the Coolermaster Hyper Z600 heatsink in its passive mode." A heap overflow was discovered in OpenOffice.org's EMF parser. An attacker could create a carefully crafted EMF file that could cause OpenOffice.org to crash or potentially execute arbitrary code if the malicious EMF image was added to a document or if a document containing such an EMF file was opened (CVE-2007-5746). Multiple heap overflows and an integer underflow were discovered in the Quattro Pro® import filter. An attacker could create a carefully crafted Quattro Pro file that could cause OpenOffice.org ro crash or potentially execute arbitraty code (CVE-2007-5745, CVE-2007-5747). A heap overflow was discovered in the OLE Structured Storage file parser, a format used by Microsoft Office documents. An attacker could create a carefully crafted OLE file that could cause OpenOffice.org to crash or potentially execute arbitrary code (CVE-2008-0320). The updated packages have been patched to correct these issues. _______________________________________________________________________ References: 5. PC Review have a new review of Kaspersky Internet Security 7, a complete package to protect your PC from online threats: "This suite of tools will provide the average user with excellent protection against a wide range of computer security threats, much more so than an out of the box system. There are however, plenty of alternative products (at cost or free) which claim to do the same job. It should be expected that a good security package will not only provide good threat protection, but also work in the background with a minimum of use of system resources. This stops the system from slowing down and being considered bloated." Article URL : http://www.pcreview.co.uk/reviews/Software/Kaspersky_Internet_Security_7/
  6. Hi! Intel Skulltrail is the ultimate platform for the high-end users. It has two sockets that can house two Intel Core 2 Extreme processors, and four PCIe x16 slots with support for up to four graphics cards working together in either SLI or CrossFire. We will explore the latter in a future article, but until then we've compiled this preview for you. We've taken a closer look at Skulltrail and see what hides beneath the heatsinks and coolers. 8. GMC are a Korean manufacturer of PC cases and they are continuously trying to design innovative and functional products for enthusiasts who would like to have something a little different. Today we will take a look at one of their latest creations, the R-3 'Corona'. The R-3 is a tower case designed to fit a standard ATX system but with the minimum possible dimensions, making it considerably smaller than any standard ATX case out there. Of course such a design has downsides as well as advantages which we will examine in this review. http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=560 ___________________________________ Driver Heaven News Mailer

I'm really in charge of the entire //Battlefield franchise and it's very clear to me that there are three...well, we have to make this a three-pronged assault with the series really. First, there are consoles. Consoles are really big, we can't ignore them, we have to be on the consoles. Second, there's this casual experiment we're going with //Battlefield: Heroes and the third prong is the hardcore PC gaming experience. We've made those in the past and we'll continue to make them in the future. We aren't specifically announcing anything, but we are still going to keep those hardcore gamers very happy. Title: Thermolab Nano Silencer CPU Cooler LGA775 ( -at -) DragonSteelMods Review Link: http://www.dragonsteelmods.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7384&Itemid=38 Review Snipit: "Yesterday I looked at the Thermolab Micro Silencer CPU Cooler, today I've got the Thermolab Nano Silencer. If you thought the Micro Silencer was small then you'll be amazed at the size of the Nano Silencer, it is about half the size of the Micro and still performs almost as well. I'm truly surprised by the performance of this cooler when you consider just how small it is. Since it's so small there should be no problem fitting it into any size case, and there should be no compatibility issues with motherboard or cases. 16. Today we look at the Honeywell Arius 2216 LCD. SNIP: In 2008, older viewers who have lived their whole lives in 4:3 will initially gawk at a custom interface like 11:15 and feel that the ratio is odd, confining, or forced – but no one is wondering whether or not a widescreen LCD looks awesome ripping HD, because we’ve warmed up to the idea in the movie theater. Widescreen seems like a natural evolution, although just a few years ago we were staring at our moderately hi-res, bulky 4:3 CRTs, and marveling at how crisp the images looked in comparison to a normal television. No doubt you’ll see some of the hip kids reverting to 4:3 for its “vintage” appeal, and there might even be readers out there who have taken that stance already; arguing that the TV ratio they grew up watching Thundercats on will never – EVER – die, regardless of what widescreen is doing at large. So you can suck it up and follow the crowd – if for no reason other than easing compatibility with the world’s weird formatting preferences – or you could do something completely off-the-wall, and throw budget to the wind. More on that later. Regardless of your personal idea of graphical perfection, Bjorn3D has been on the hunt for a total solution and a total departure; something that makes perfect sense by providing productive versatility, individuality, and great multimedia experience in a really unique way, and Honeywell sent us a pretty good place to start. Their new Arius 22” widescreen LCD offers enough flexibility to help you make some interesting changes – whether you’re looking to clean up your lines and go minimal, or add a unique over-the-top component that sets your rig apart in a stuffy room of standards. http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1264 A post on your site would be great if you can. 17. Title: Gigabyte DES X48T-DQ6 Motherboard Review ( -at -) HardwareLogic Quote: "INTEL's X48 chipset is the much anticipated follow up to the X38 chipset....which in turn was the much anticipated follow up to INTEL's hugely successful P35 chipset. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or industry insider to know that many in the enthusiast community are less than thrilled about the "marginal" improvements during the progression of chipsets, especially considering the prices some of these motherboards are going for (in excess of $300). While this isn't to say any of the three chipsets are poor performers, I find it a bit curious that INTEL has run these chipsets out as they have, taking the overall performance of each into consideration." 19. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Mobile) - Exclusive look at MSI GX600X TurboBook QUOTE: "Introducing the all new, very loud and proud GX600X TurboBook from MSI. Clearly unlike any other notebook you would have seen from them in the past, it looks as if it would be better suited to ‘nitro crew’ outfitting hotrods with digitized tune-ups. The sleek glossy black coating is aimed to catch the eye, while the top cover is emblazoned with a superman style logo in an equally loud fashion. In particular, this GX600X top of the line notebook is a peak performer, with excellent overclocking capabilities as well as lots and lots of features and peripherals; from e-SATA or HDMI connectivity to a special ‘Turbo’ button that we found gives a 20% increase in processor speed. The Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity are as to be expected from a high-end notebook, whereas the graphics are truly magnificent in such a small platform." Quote from the review: "The Skullcandy Pipe is a small speaker system that can charge your iPod and play your music at the same time. Visually the Skullcandy Pipe is tiny and when I took it out of the box I wondered how something so small would produce good sound. As soon as I popped my iPhone into the Pipe those skepticisms went away. The sound that comes from the tiny speakers and small dimensions is very impressive." 21. A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review of the Bgears b-Envi MicroATX Case Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "The Bgears b-Envi MicroATX was extremely fun to test because it kept surprising me with it's features. First of all, how cool is it to have LED touch buttons for your front panel? They are responsive buttons that beep when you touch them so that you know that the touch was registered. Also, the buttons are lockable so that you don't accidentally hit one of the buttons and turn off your computer by mistake. The case only weighs eight pounds before you put the components inside of it, and even after the components are installed, this case is still rather light. I will definitely be bringing this case to LAN parties." 22. What happens when you take a Radeon HD 3870 graphics card and slap a gig of memory on it? That is the question of the hour, since our subject is Diamond's new card with just such a configuration. The Radeon HD 3870 has established itself as a pretty decent option among mid-range graphics cards, although it's squeezed by formidable competition from Nvidia. Could doubling up on video memory allow the 3870 to distinguish itself from the likes of the GeForce 9600 GT and GeForce 8800 GT? We decided to find out. http://techreport.com/articles.x/14654 Thanks, Scott __ Scott Wasson The Tech Report PC Hardware Explored http://techreport.com -- To unsubscribe from: TR-News, just follow this link:
  23. = Release notes for F9-beta on ia64 = == Welcome == Welcome to the F9 beta release Fedora for ia64. F9 is the first Fedora release to be officially supported on ia64. This ia64 build of fedora is the first to be released under the "secondary architectures" project. We have made efforts to make sure that the ia64 release is equal to the release of Fedora for x86, x86_64, ppc and ppc64, however there are some differences that should be noted. General information on the Fedora-ia64 project can be found at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Architectures/IA64 For more information about the secondary architectures project for Fedora see: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Architectures == Download location == The beta can be downloaded from: http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora-secondary/releases/test/9-Beta/ This will redirect you to one of the available mirrors for this content. However, at this point there is only 1 public mirror. We encourage anyone who managers a public mirror site to mirror the secondary arch Fedora bits. Info on how to become a Fedora mirror can be found at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/Mirroring See the section with special information on secondary arch mirroring. The mirroring system also allows for setting up a private mirror only visible to clients connecting from a specific range of ip addresses (useful for users inside of large corporations). == SRPM location == Since the ia64 release was not done in sync with the other architectures it does not contain identical versions on all packages. Since the fedora MirrorManager assumes that SRPMs are identical for all arches downloading sources using yumdownloader will sometimes get a different version of the sources than was built for ia64. The entire tree containing binaries and the exact sources used for this release are kept together in the tree. == Bug reporting == Open source software survives on defect reports from end users. We would appreciate bugs reports if you find problems. Bugs should be filed at: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/ Use the component "Fedora" and the version "rawhide" when you file a bug aginst this beta release. Please add fedora-ia64-committee ( -at -) redhat.com to the CC list so we can investigate if it is specific to our ia64 build. Also, please include the full version of the package that contains the bug (such as anaconda-11.4.0.75-1 or kernel-2.6.25-1.fc9) since the versions in the ia64 beta often do not match the version that was shipped with the beta for other arches. == No live image == We do not yet have live DVD images for ia64. We hope to have this for Fedora 10. == Known issues and workarounds == There are some known issues with this release. An updated list along with workarounds can be found at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Architectures/IA64/Workarounds Known issues at the time of this writing are: === Installing using VNC fails === There is no known workaround for this at this time. You must use either the text or the normal GUI install under X. === /boot/efi must be "efi" type not "vfat" === Manually partitioning fails if /boot/efi is selected as "vfat" filesystem type. The workaround is to select "efi" from the list of filesystem types. This issue is also seen when trying to reuse an existing /boot/efi partition. When re-using an existing /boot/efi partition the installation will fail unless you specify to reformat it. === HP Smart Array boot failures === Occasional boot failures on HP Smart Array (aka "cciss") devices. This is still under investigation and it is unclear what the root cause is. Users who have seen this report good results by booting with selinux disabled (selinux=0). === Anaconda crash on HP Smart Array with no disks === When installing on a system that has an HP Smart Array card that has no disks configured, anaconda will crash. The workaround is to: * Step 1: When you get the warning "Unable to determine geometry ..." choose "Ignore". * Step 2: When you are asked "The partition table on device cciss/c1d0 was unreadable .... Would you like to initialize this drive, erasing ALL DATA?" choose "No" === Firefox does not run on ia64 === Attempting to run firefox gives the error: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9b5pre and 1.9b5pre. This has been resolved in the current rawhide tree. Up[censored] the browser with "yum update firefox" should resolve this. --

Fixes LP#150412 o fix object registration TYPE_CAIRO_PATTERN (Gian Mario) o New custom example for SVG images. (Gian Mario) o update with new goocanvas 0.10 API (Gian Mario) o fix a bug introduced by pycairo API change, see LP#222503 reported by David Boucher (Gian Mario) o Update docs according to new API (Gian Mario) Blurb: ====== Goocanvas [1] is a canvas widget for GTK+, It is similar in many ways to FooCanvas, hence the name, but it uses cairo for rendering, it has an optional model/view split, and uses interfaces for items & views (so you can easily turn any application object into a canvas item or view). PyGooCanvas is a wrapper which exposes the goocanvas API to the python world. It is fairly complete; most of the API are covered. The documentation is done, anyway bug reports on docs are really important to improve the documentation. Like the GTK+ library, PyGTK and GooCanvas itself PyGooCanvas is licensed under the GNU LGPL, so is suitable for use in both free software and proprietary applications. I'm pleased to announce version 0.1.3 of libgee, the GObject collection library. libgee 0.1.3 is now available for download at: http://download.gnome.org/sources/libgee/0.1/ Changes since 0.1.2 * More unit tests. * Update for Vala 0.3.1. libgee is a collection library providing GObject-based interfaces and classes for commonly used data structures. libgee provides the following interfaces: * Iterable * Collection * List * Set * Iterator * Map The ArrayList, HashSet, and HashMap classes provide a reasonable sample implementation of the List, Set, and Map interfaces. ReadOnlyCollection, ReadOnlyList, ReadOnlySet, and ReadOnlyMap are read-only wrapper classes that prevent modification of the underlying collection. libgee is written in Vala and can be used like any GObject-based C library. It's planned to provide bindings for further languages. More information about libgee is available at http://live.gnome.org/Libgee Jürg Billeter _______________________________________________
