Hardware Canucks is pleased to present our review of the ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 PCI-E Sound Card. Quote: ASUS has heard the call for a product aimed at this budget-priced market and they are back from the drawing boards and off to market with another addition to their new line of PC soundcards: The Xonar 7.1 DX. They recently started to apply their considerable design talents to cement a solid name and reputation for themselves among PC audio fans with high spec, high quality soundcards even though the new Xonar DX 7.1 is clearly aimed at the entry level markets with a lower price tag and no-frills bundle. It seems as if the folks at Western Digital have been working late night in their RD department as the new Velociraptor takes the Raptor series to the next level. The Raptor series of drives were already a hall of fame winning product and with new drives with basically twice as fast overall performance levels these new Velociraptors will take their rightful place alongside their predecessors. The new Velociraptor is also very quiet running; you can barely hear it when engaged, always a good thing. Games were accessed faster, files transferred quicker and Music ripped seamlessly. At Phoronix we have posted a new article. A link to this from your site's news section would be greatly appreciated. Title: Phoronix Test Suite 0.4.0 Released ( -at -) Phoronix Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12268 Summary: "Following last week's release of Phoronix Test Suite 0.3.0 and the 0.3.1 hot-fix, a surprising amount of changes have wound up in this week's development release known as version 0.4.0. In fact, there are 21 major changes in this new release not counting general development work and minor bug fixes. Among the changes are new test profiles, a number of new PTS options, PTS External Dependencies support for new Linux distributions, reworking how results are saved, and the graphs are now rendered locally when saving the results." Dear Editors, we just posted a new article which might be interesting to your readers. A post in your news section would be appreciated. Title: Head-Direct RE1 Earphones Link: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Head-Direct/RE1 Brief: Head-Direct has just released their RE1 earphones which are quite different compared to all the other in-ears on the market today. The special thing about them is that they are based around some very unique performing drivers that scale particularly well. The better your amplifier is, the better their sound, leaving the competition behind in the dust - if you have a good amp.

The time has come again for new system guide. In the two months since we last outlined system specifications, AMD has rolled out B3-stepping Phenoms that banish the TLB erratum that plagued the processor's initial release. Intel's 45nm quad-core chips have become available en masse, bringing with them a wave of price cuts that makes a Penryn-based CPU more affordable than ever. And Asus has busted the sound card market wide open with the introduction of its Xonar DX. There has been action on the storage front, too, with Western Digital's latest Caviar SE16 offering what we think is the best all-around value in a Serial ATA hard drive. Naturally, these new products feature heavily in our latest system guide, which packs more goodness than ever before. We've revamped everything from our Econobox, which now offers loads of gaming power for just over 500 bucks, to our Double-Stuff workstation, which packs more parallelism than should be allowed by law. Between them, our Grand Experiment and Sweet Spot configs offer tremendous power for their respective price points. We've even included a fifth system this time around: the Couch Potato Mk. 2. This latest take on the ultimate home theater PC combines HD tuning capabilities with Blu-ray playback support all wrapped up in a quiet, power-efficient package. Keep reading to see which components made the cut for our recommended system configurations, and more importantly, why we selected them. http://techreport.com/articles.x/14610 Thanks, Geoff ---- Geoff Gasior The Tech Report http://techreport.com -- To unsubscribe from: TR-News, just follow this link:

A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review of the Sansa C250 MP3 Player Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "As for as I am concerned, Sandisk should be ashamed of themselves, three units on five different computers, come on. You cannot tell me there is not a problem and brush it off like it's nothing. Was it a bad batch? Was it a bad product? I will never know because I never could get one to work. For tech support to not want to help me at first and to try and turn it onto Microsoft was just disturbing. After listening to the store's complaints about how they were treated and knowing how I was treated until I identified myself gives me the impression that Sandisk does not give a crap about anyone but themselves." Background ========== JRockit is BEA WebLogic's J2SE Development Kit. Affected packages ================= ------------------------------------------------------------------- Package / Vulnerable / Unaffected ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 dev-java/jrockit-jdk-bin < 1.5.0.14 *>= 1.4.2.16 >= 1.5.0.14 Description =========== Because of sharing the same codebase, JRockit is affected by the vulnerabilities mentioned in GLSA 200804-20. Impact ====== A remote attacker could entice a user to run a specially crafted applet on a website or start an application in Java Web Start to execute arbitrary code outside of the Java sandbox and of the Java security restrictions with the privileges of the user running Java. The attacker could also obtain sensitive information, create, modify, rename and read local files, execute local applications, establish connections in the local network, bypass the same origin policy, and cause a Denial of Service via multiple vectors. Workaround ========== There is no known workaround at this time. Resolution ========== All JRockit 1.4 users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=dev-java/jrockit-jdk-bin-1.4.2.16" All JRockit 1.5 users should upgrade to the latest version: # emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=dev-java/jrockit-jdk-bin-1.5.0.14" References ========== [ 1 ] GLSA 200804-20 http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-200804-20.xml Availability ============ This GLSA and any updates to it are available for viewing at the Gentoo Security Website: http://security.gentoo.org/glsa/glsa-200804-28.xml Concerns? ========= Security is a primary focus of Gentoo Linux and ensuring the confidentiality and security of our users machines is of utmost importance to us. Today we have a shoot out, OCZ DDR3-12800 Platinum vs. Patriot DDR3-1500 Viper. SNIP: Recently we received two DDR3 kits, one from OCZ Technology and one from Patriot Memory. The kit from OCZ was their 4GB DDR3 12800 (DDR3 1600) Platinum Enhance Bandwidth product and Patriot sent us their 2GB Viper DDR3 15000 (DDR3 1866) kit. Both of these products were used in our recent review of the ASUS P5E3 Premium motherboard. We saw some rather interesting phenomena with both of these memory kits in that review so we have decided to review both of these kits comparatively in much more detail using the same test rig. Our goal is not only to give you a complete review of these two memory products, but to also answer the questions we alluded to in the beginning of this introduction. http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1267 A post on your site would be great if you can. Thank you, Scott -----------------------------------------

Hi all, We have just published a review of *Wii Fit* - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/04/24/wii_fit/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/04/wii_fit/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"I say this a lot, but it really is hard to know what to think about //Wii Fit. On the one hand it’s obviously great. The hardware has a lot going for it in the future and is just as clever as everything else in the Wii. It’ll help get lard-arses off the couch and on their feet and even if you aren’t into fitness then the game itself is still fun for a little while. Yet, on the other hand the balance board is quite expensive, it is still just another collection of minigames at the most basic level and the reality is that those lard-arses will play the game every day for about two weeks at most before going back to exercising their drinking arm. Sure, that last part is grumpy as hell, but it’s also true. There’s room for movement, but the vast, vast majority of people will vociferously defend themselves and pledge to play the Wii for hours every day – only to let themselves off because they had a hard day at work. I know. I’m one of those people. Judged on fun and ingenuity, //Wii Fit gets top marks. Judged on longevity and value though, the game suffers horribly at our admittedly grumpy hands. The decider then goes to the future of the balance board and whether the hardware can prove itself useful in upcoming games. If the support is there then the game and the hardware will flourish – but otherwise it may end up as ugly and uncomfortable as the Zapper."/ * *Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net

Hi all, We have just published a review of *The World Ends With You* for Nintendo DS - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/04/20/the_world_ends_with_you/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/04/the_world_ends_with_you/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"The World Ends With You is both a fantastically imaginative and hugely derivative game as far as DS RPGs go and the whole thing feels like a teenage version of //Contact what with the intriguing art style and obsession with stickers and badges as weapons. There’s two ways to look at //The World Ends With You, if you ask us. You can look at it in terms of Square Enix and say that, as far as their history goes, //The World Ends With You is a good game, but hardly as remarkable as past titles. //Final Fantasy VII this is not. On the other hand though, if you look at this as far as the DS goes, then this is definitely one of the best RPGs the platform has seen. Yeah, it may not be the next //Final Fantasy, but it’s still a great game and the art style that runs through the game is both striking and adorable. The characters are visually arresting and some of the more powerful combos and fusion powers are really quite cool. The best thing about //The World Ends With You though is that the game manages to be both involving and accessible. There’s an awful lot of information to absorb in the first few hours of play, not least of which is the combat system, which is hugely fun and frantic but also tough to get to grips with. The game never once feels overpowering or dull though and instead pulls players in deeper, thanks to characters that players can relate to and excellent dialogue. //The World Ends With You may not quite live up the expectations of those wanting the next //Final Fantasy or //Kingdom Hearts – but those people would probably never be satisfied anyway and, as it is, //The World Ends With You is still a fantastic game that all DS gamers can easily enjoy. Hi everyone! After first making use of XFX's nForce 790i Ultra SLI motherboard as part of our Quad SLI review, today we put this part under the spotlight in its own right, to see how it shapes up against a competing nForce 790i board in a similar price range. XFX nForce 790i Ultra SLI motherboard review "While it may not be the most comprehensive list of tweaking options we've ever seen, in reality is should be enough for all but the most hardcore of overclockers, offering up every option you should need with a decent range of settings to choose from to boot, as befitting of an enthusiast level motherboard." http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=563&Itemid=27 As always, a news post on your site would be hugely appreciated, and we guarantee to reciprocate by posting any news items received from yourselves.
