  1. Capuchin ======== In this release the behavior of AppObject's Update method changed. It's now always called blocking, therefore the UpdateFinished signal has been removed. Download -------- http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/capuchin/0.3/ Homepage -------- http://capuchin.k-d-w.org/ Changes ------- * Fixed bug that downloaded file will be deleted even if it's no archive * Strip bad characters from object path * Added support for Content-Disposition * Made AppObject.Update a blocking call. * Removed UpdateFinished signal, because it's not needed anymore. capuchin-glib ============= Every method of CapuchinGAppObject requires a GError now. That way the user can handle errors himself instead of failing more or less silently. capuchin-glib is now licensed under GPLv3 or later. Download -------- http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/capuchin-glib/0.1/ Changes ------- * capuchin_g_app_object_update works no blocking * New function capuchin_g_app_object_update_async updates the repository async -- Greetings, Sebastian Pölsterl _______________________________________________

    Phenom X3 8750 Review

Good day, Today Neoseeker took a look at one of the new triple-core processors from AMD, the Phenom X3 8750. http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/amd_phenom_8750/ And here's a quote: "Regardless of how it became a tri-core part, I was interested to see how our 8750 would perform compared to not only the quad core Phenoms, but also a "Black Edition" dual core AMD 5000+ X2. I also threw in a comparison to a Core 2 Duo E6750, a 2.67GHz part - giving it a 267MHz speed advantage at stock speeds - to see how the tri-core would compare to an equivalently priced dual core Intel part. After all, AMD is trying to position the tri-core parts as a viable alternative to some dual core parts -- so let's see if they accomplished this goal with some testing." Thanks for any links. ___________________________ Kevin Spiess Editor, Neoseeker.com 604.247.8886 ext.101

    GNOME 2.23.1 Released!

GNOME 2.23.1 Development Release ================================ Welcome to the 2.23 development cycle! This is the first release in our trip to GNOME 2.24, which will be out in September, in around five months. We'll hopefully enjoy some nice new bugs and crashes, while we'll have to live with new features, improvements or fixes. To be honest, I was a bit sad when I smoketested this release because I was expecting to see way more problems. I didn't even see a single crash. Isn't this sad? Maybe I didn't try hard enough and you'll be able to find some of them -- think about your bugzilla points and file them! The roadmap for 2.24 is still a work in progress, but many contributors already know what they want to work on and, as usual, many changes are planned. So you can be sure this development cycle will be a fun ride! To compile GNOME 2.23.1, you can use GARNOME [1] (which supports users and has additional/different modules available), or the jhbuild [2] modulesets [3] (which use the exact tarball versions from the official release): [1] http://www.gnome.org/projects/garnome/ [2] http://library.gnome.org/devel/jhbuild/ [3] http://download.gnome.org/teams/releng/2.23.1/ The release notes that describe the changes between 2.22.1 and 2.23.1 are available. WARNING! WARNING! -------------------------- This release is a snapshot of development code. Although it is buildable and usable, it is primarily intended for testing and hacking purposes. GNOME uses odd minor version numbers to indicate development status. 16. Hello fellow editors! Tech ARP ( http://www.techarp.com/ <http://www.techarp.com/>'>http://www.techarp.com/> ) has just posted the Hard Drive Performance Comparison Guide. Quote - Ever wanted a guide on hard drive performance, where you can compare the performance of a wide range of hard drives? Well, we are not quite there yet, but that is our ultimate objective. In this performance comparison guide, we will test and compare the performance of all the hard drives we can get our hands on. This is similar to what we are doing in the Intel Core 2 Processor Performance Comparison Guide. Here's a quote from the guide :- "WinBench 99 2.0 has proven that it can still serve as a consistent and reliable hard drive benchmark even in Windows Vista. It has given us a lot of interesting data. If the Business and High-End simulations were not good enough, the raw transfer rate results were certainly most useful. From the transfer rate results, you can see which hard drive has a higher transfer rate, and how areal density affects that performance metric. It also shot down the perception that a newer model is always faster." 17. A-Data C702 16GB Flash Drive Review ( -at -) [OC]ModShop I used to carry around several 4-gigabyte sticks because as a technology and graphics professional I need my files with me at all times. I had one stick for portable applications, one for photoshop files and fonts I use all the time, and of course one to hold all my Atari 2600 and Nintendo emulator ROMs... Now I can replace all of these sticks with a single USB drive thanks to A-Data's C702 16GB Flash drive. Not only does it cram 4 DVDs-worth of storage into a little nugget, but is has features to make it ultra-portable and ultra-useful. Title: Gigabyte STA Thin Client ( -at -) Phoronix Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12254 Summary: "At Phoronix we have looked at a number of Gigabyte products from their motherboards to graphics cards and even wireless adapters. However, today is our first time looking at one of Gigabyte's barebone solutions. The Gigabyte STA Thin Client, specifically the GB-STA-C7V7, is a mini-ITX solution that ships with a VIA C7 1.0GHz processor, UniChrome PRO graphics, is completely fan-free, and it's all packed in a slim yet stylized chassis. However, does the Gigabyte STA Thin Client work with Linux? We'll let you know today." Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments you may
  19. Just hours ago AMD announced the availability of three new AMD Phenom X3 triple-core processors that feature the latest B3 stepping. AMD first announced triple-core processors back in September 2007, but only just recently launched the AMD Phenom X3 8000 series last month. AMD has finally brought the 'B3' stepping to the triple-cores and has announced three new AMD Phenom X3 triple-core processors that make up the new '50-series'. Quote: "When it comes to performance the AMD Phenom X3 8750 performed much faster than the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and actually beat out the AMD Phenom X4 9600 (Running the TLB Patch) in a number of benchmarks. It was also able to perform better than the Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 and Core 2 Duo E6750 as seen in the benchmarks. Intel still has the lead when overclocking, but AMD hasn't been marketing the Phenom X3 series as enthusiasts parts. With that said, we still managed to get another 500MHz out of the Phenom X3 8750 by overclocking just the bus frequency..." 20. Sandwiched between dual and quad cores, the Phenom X3 provides an alternative for those looking for a solid dollar for performance ratio. "Even though the AMD Unified Video Decoder can offload CPU usage in HD playback by putting the work on the graphics processing unit, if you're running multiple tasks during HD playback, the system does struggle if it doesn't have the horse power. We don't do it often, but at times we'll be converting files into DivX for sharing, and the CPU is completely maxed out, causing dropped frames during HD playback. For the test files we used, the X3 8750 had no problems with HD and file conversion." http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/cpu_mobo/amd/hd8750/

  24. We have had positive experiences with Cooler Master cases here at Driver Heaven, generally they are well made, easy to use and they also always have decent styling, even the cheaper models. Of course there have also been some spectacular cases such as the Cosmos and Cosmos S which are winners of Driver Heaven awards. With plenty of good Cooler Master experiences behind us we were given the opportunity to review their latest budget case, the Centurion 590. We actually bought one of the original Centurions a few years back and it is a solid model which has proven to be hard wearing over years of heavy use. http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=555 ______________________________ Driver Heaven News Mailer
  25. Hi all, We have just published a review of *AMD's Phenom X3 8750 processor* - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/04/23/amd_phenom_x3_8750/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/04/amd_phenom_x3_8750/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"AMD’s Phenom X3 8750 is a good processor in isolation and one that overclocks incredibly well based on our experiences. However, the sad fact is that the three Phenom cores aren’t fast enough to see off the competition from Intel’s higher-clocked (and sometimes cheaper) dual-core processors and the sucker punch for AMD really is the Core 2 Quad Q6600. In applications where the triple core Phenom //has the potential to show its muscle, the Core 2 Quad Q6600 waltzes in and mops it up in quite spectacular fashion. It’s a shame, because we were expecting the Phenom X3 8750 to be a good value proposition for the enthusiast. However, if you’re looking to upgrade a current socket AM2 system, we’d recommend spending that little bit more and getting a quad-core Phenom – it’s absolutely worth it."/ * *Cheers guys!
