Another Southern California Linux Expo is in the books. Karen Sandler started the day with a thought-provoking session titled “In the Scheme of Things, How Important is Software Freedom?†(Spoiler alert: It’s not just important, it’s vital.) Recapping, SCALE 15x was something of a mosaic. There were sessions and side conversations about virtual machines, microcontrollers, boot loaders, management tools … each a small, shiny, interesting bit. In later sessions and on the expo floor, you meet people who are assembling those shiny bits into a much bigger picture. DIY hardware boards are transformed into a clustered, auto-scaling container platform, for example. You learn how people are leveraging FOSS for everything from getting technology to children in developing countries to managing the largest enterprise infrastructures and all of the supporting services, training and resources needed to do it. Or, you can simply meet and thank the folks responsible for your favorite Open Source project. Throughout, though, is the thread of community and sharing that keeps us coming back to SCALE. 16x will be here before we know it. Meanwhile, watch for replays of recorded sessions on our YouTube channel and for copies of speaker presentations on the SCALE website. https://www.youtube.com/user/socallinuxexpohttps://www.youtube.com/user/socallinuxexpo See you next year. --

Apologies for the delay. SCALE 15x is tracking to be the most attended ever. Thanks again to the speakers, sponsors and exhibitors for their support. Christine Corbet-Moran delivered an outstanding keynote to an overflow crowd. The first of two Installfests took place, with Open Source experts guiding beginners through the process of getting a working Linux distribution onto their systems. The Next Generation track provided a vehicle for some exceptional young people as they tackled topics such as VR, 3D printing, big data and video creation. Remember the names; you’ll be hearing more from this new guard in the coming years. Please be sure you don’t leave SCALE without the coveted 15x t-shirt. Stop by booth #231 in the expo hall and one of our friendly volunteers will help you find one in your size. --

At Phoronix we have posted a new article. A link to this from your site's news section would be greatly appreciated. Title: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Linux Benchmarks: Great Multi-Core Performance For $329 ( -at -) Phoronix Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=24241 Summary: "Yesterday we posted launch-day Ryzen 7 1800X Linux benchmarks that were particularly appealing for multi-core / heavily-threaded workloads like code compilation. Given all the code compilation done by Linux users in particular, if you were intrigued by the Ryzen 7 1800X performance but find the $499 USD price-tag to be too higher, today I have my initial benchmark figures on the Ryzen 7 1700. The Ryzen 7 1700 is still eight cores and sixteen threads but will only set you back $329 USD as the current low-end Ryzen processor for what's currently available." AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Overclocking – Best Ryzen Processor? @ Legit Reviews
news posted a topic in Upcoming News
On Thursday, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched their Ryzen 7 processor series and we looked at all three processors in our launch article. Over the past several days we’ve been able to spend more time with the Ryzen 7 1800X, 1700X and 1700 and we’ve found ourselves really starting to like the Ryzen 7 1700 processor the best from an enthusiast perspective. For starts the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 is the lowest price processor of the group at $329.99 shipped and it just happens to be the only model that comes with an AMD Wraith CPU cooler. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ===================================================================== Red Hat Security Advisory Synopsis: Moderate: rpm-ostree and rpm-ostree-client security, bug fix, and enhancement update Advisory ID: RHSA-2017:0444-02 Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host Advisory URL: https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2017:0444 Issue date: 2017-03-02 CVE Names: CVE-2017-2623 ===================================================================== 1. Summary: An update for rpm-ostree and rpm-ostree-client is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host 7. Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Moderate. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section. 2. Relevant releases/architectures: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host 7 - x86_64 3. Description: The rpm-ostree tool binds together the RPM packaging model with the OSTree model of bootable file system trees. It provides commands which can be used both on client systems as well as server-side composes. The rpm-ostree-client package provides commands usable on client systems to upgrade and rollback. The following packages have been upgraded to a later upstream version: rpm-ostree (2017.1), rpm-ostree-client (2017.1). (BZ#1416089) Security Fix(es): * It was discovered that rpm-ostree and rpm-ostree-client fail to properly check GPG signatures on packages when doing layering. Packages with unsigned or badly signed content could fail to be rejected as expected. This issue is partially mitigated on RHEL Atomic Host, where certificate pinning is used by default. (CVE-2017-2623) This issue was discovered by Colin Walters (Red Hat). 4. Solution: For details on how to apply this update, which includes the changes described in this advisory, refer to: https://access.redhat.com/articles/11258 5. Bugs fixed (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/): 1416089 - Rebase ostree + rpm-ostree for 7.3.3 1421781 - Package layering non-root packages does not install var paths owned by root 1421867 - rpm-ostree daemon does not start when system is unsubscribed 1422157 - CVE-2017-2623 rpm-ostree and rpm-ostree-client fail to check gpg package signatures when layering 6.
