December 10th, 2012 - Brighton, UK. NetDev, a leading telco apps developer, has announced SureVoIP as its first customer for DRUM a new web meeting solution with integrated audio conferencing. SureVoIP is a UK-based provider of Internet telephony which targets the enterprise and SME market. DRUM was launched in October 2012 as a value-added service to help service providers address the enterprise and small business market. DRUM audio conferencing will be hosted from SureVoIP’s network, enabling SureVoIP to extend the range of communications services it offers to its customers, while maintaining control over the service to ensure its customers receive the best possible call quality. Through DRUM, SureVoIP will be able to address the growing conferencing and web meeting market. According to AMI Research, the combined audio and web conferencing market will grow year on year to reach $2.7 billion by 2014. Despite robust growth in the overall market, service providers have been relatively slow to deliver their own conferencing and web meeting services. SureVoIP also has the option to deliver DRUM’s web meeting application to its customers, in addition to the audio conferencing service. DRUM web meetings is a central repository for every meeting a user attends, allowing participants to create meetings, present and share documents, take notes and assign tasks in the browser. It is an HTML5 application which means users can access and use it from the browser without software downloads or plugins. DRUM also has WebRTC conference calling capability which allows users to join their conference call directly from the web, with no need for an access number or PIN. DRUM web meetings is hosted by NetDev and integrates with audio through simple provisioning settings. “Audio conferencing is a very natural addition to our services, which means an even fuller range of options for our customers,†commented Gavin Henry, Managing Director at SureVoIP. “With DRUM we can extend audio conferencing to a complete web meeting and collaboration solution and WebRTC enabled conference calls can really add value to enterprise meetings and collaboration. By hosting DRUM audio conferencing we maintain ownership of the voice quality and the billing relationship, so we know we can continue to deliver the quality of service that our customers expect from us.†“DRUM delivers audio conferencing as a feature of a much wider web meeting and collaboration service. Users can join and control their conference calls directly from the browser or the fixed/mobile phone†said John Logsdon, CEO and Founder of NetDev. “It adds value to enterprise communications and enables service providers to build revenues from non-subscribers who are invited to the meeting or conference.†About NetDev: NetDev is a UK-based telco apps developer and managed services provider founded in 2003. Context selected for new Government ‘Cyber Incident Response’ scheme
neondrum posted a topic in Upcoming News
November 7th, 2012 - Context Information Security is one of the first four companies to be certified in a new Government scheme announced today that will help UK organisations respond effectively to the increase in cyber security attacks. The ‘Cyber Incident Response’ scheme launched by CESG, the Information Assurance arm of GCHQ, and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI), is aimed primarily at the public sector and the UK’s critical national infrastructure as well as providing assistance to other parts of the private sector. The new initiative supports the delivery of the UK Cyber Security Strategy and expands the UK’s cyber incident response capabilities through greater collaboration between Government and industry. Context is one of only four companies certified by CESG/CPNI as part of the initial pilot to work in partnership based on its knowledge and experience. As an established independent information security consultancy, Context has been providing technical assurance, targeted attack detection, response, investigation and mitigation services since 2007. “The Cyber Incident Response scheme marks a very positive move by CESG/CPNI to harness the skills and expertise of companies such as Context in order to support the growing number of victims of targeted attacks,†said Alex Church, Technical Director at Context Information Security. “Organisations notified of attacks or those interested in getting advice about detection and mitigation will now have a clear pointer to spe[censored]t help with the level of trust and quality-assurance delivered by the scheme.†"We are delighted to welcome Context to our new Cyber Incident Response pilot,†said a spokesman for GCHQ. “This pilot has been developed with the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure and is an important addition to the range of CESG certified products and services, which provide protection from the growing cyber threat. Context has been a member of our IT health-check scheme ‘CHECK’ for a number of years and we look forward to working with them in this new endeavour as they bring their considerable expertise to bear when responding to cyber attacks." This latest announcement from CESG/CPNI follows on from the “10 Steps to Cyber Security†programme, which was launched by the Government in September and aimed at providing advice to business leaders on measures to increase cyber security within their own organisations. Chloë Smith, Minister for Cyber Security said: “The growing cyber threat makes it inevitable that some attacks will get through, either where basic security is not implemented, or when an organisation is targeted by a highly capable attacker. ‘Cyber Incident Response’ services provide access to organisations certified by CESG/CPNI to respond effectively to cyber incidents. It builds on the ’10 steps to Cyber Security’ guidance on how to reduce the risk of vulnerability to attack. Together, GCHQ, CPNI, the incident response industry, and victims of cyber attack - can improve the cyber security of the UK; that is good for security, good for business and good for the UK’s prosperity.†About Context: Context was launched in 1998 and has a client base that includes some of the world’s most high profile blue chip companies, alongside government organisations. An exceptional level of technical expertise underpins all Context services, while a detailed and comprehensive approach helps clients to attain a deeper understanding of security vulnerabilities, threats or incidents. The company’s strong track record is based above all, on the technical skills, professionalism, independence and integrity of its consultants. Many of the world's most successful organisations turn to Context for technical assurance, incident response and investigation services. Context is also at the forefront of research and development in security technology. As well as publishing white papers and blogs addressing current and emerging security threats and trends, Context consultants are frequently invited to present at open and closed industry events around the world. Context presents ‘Breaking .NET Through Serialization’ at Black Hat USA
neondrum posted a topic in Upcoming News
Tomorrow at the Black Hat USA conference in Las Vegas, James Forshaw, a Principal Security Consultant at Context Information Security, will be presenting details of vulnerabilities discovered in the .NET framework that allow malicious remote code execution from within .NET applications. His paper, ‘Breaking .NET Through Serialization’ is also published today at: www.contextis.co.uk/research/white-papers/areyoumytype Earlier this year, Microsoft released a patch to mitigate the risks after Context made Microsoft aware of the .NET vulnerabilities and helped to fix the issues. The patch makes changes to the workings of the serialization framework, a fundamental feature of .NET applications that allows data or objects to be easily transferred and stored. The risks identified by Context could allow an attacker to target an application, either via a remote interface or through code running within a sandbox, in order to disclose information such as authentication details or to circumvent security measures to execute code under malicious control. The applications in question could be remotely accessible business services, local privileged applications or sandboxed environments such as XAML browser applications. “The process of serialization is a fundamental function of a number of common application frameworks due to the power it provides a developer,†says James Forshaw. “The .NET framework provides many such techniques to serialize the state of objects but by far the most powerful is the Binary Formatter, a set of functionality built into the framework since v1.0. The power provided by this serialization mechanism, the length of time it has been present, as well as the fact it is tied so closely into the .NET runtime, makes it a significant attack threat.†The Context whitepaper describes some of the fundamental vulnerabilities which allow remote code execution, privilege escalation and information disclosure attacks against not just sandboxed .NET code such as in the browser, but also remote network services using common framework libraries. Understanding the attack techniques, which could also apply to other serialization technologies, will help developers to avoid common mistakes with binary serialization, says Context. For more information about the Black Hat USA 2012 in Las Vegas, from 21-26 July, please visit: https://www.blackhat.com/html/bh-us-12/bh-us-12-briefings.html#Forshaw The Microsoft patch for these issues can be viewed and downloaded at: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms12-035 For more information on Context, visit www.contextis.com About Context Context was launched in 1998 and has a client base that includes some of the world’s most high profile blue chip companies, alongside government organisations. The key objective of the development of Across v5.3 was to significantly facilitate and speed up the daily work for the user. To meet the growing demands of industrial customers and language service providers, the team exploited the potential of even the minutest details. Last but not least, the ongoing quality assurance in every process phase contributed to a substantial performance boost of the Across Language Server, from small to very large installations. Zaragoza, Spain – May 22th, 2012 Detecting how many people or vehicles are in a certain place is a difficult task that in the past has been addressed by using expensive and limited video camera image analysis; now with the Smartphone expansion everybody has a mobile device with Wifi or Bluetooth radios on it, and these wireless interfaces can be detected with the new sensing technology developed by Libelium and integrated inside Meshlium Xtreme -the company's multiprotocol router- . Applications of this new technology go from street activity measurement to vehicle traffic management. Now it is possible to monitor the number of people passing daily in a street, the average time of the stance at landmarks, like shopping windows, and even differentiate between residents (daily matches) and visitants (sporadic matches). "This new technology allows to detect both iPhone and Android devices without the need of a specific application installed on them" explains Libelium's CTO, David Gascón. "Meshlium Xtreme detects the "hello!" messages periodically sent by the Smartphones without the need of user interaction and always ensuring their privacy, since these messages do not identify their owners" he adds. Regarding Vehicle Traffic Monitoring the system lets know in real time the flow of traffic in highways and roads, monitoring also the average time of vehicle stance for traffic congestion prevention. With this information, automatic diversion messages can be delivered to drivers. Information collected from each mobile phone contains a unique identification address (MAC) -that allows to unequivocally identify the Smartphone-, the quality of the signal (RSSI) -which gives the distance the user is from our scanning point- and the Class of Device and Vendor which allow us to differentiate among pedestrians and vehicles. The anonymous nature of this technique is due to the use of MAC addresses as identifiers which are not associated with any specific user account or mobile phone number not even to any specific vehicle. The new Smartphone detection capability is integrated in Meshlium Xtreme - the wireless sensor network gateway designed by Libelium - which may also be acquired with ZigBee and 3G connectivity options for the interaction with autonomous sensors nodes to provide complete services to Smart Cities. Cincinnati, Ohio, May 9, 2012 - The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center can now provide employees with remote access to high-performance computing, data analysis, and administrative resources thanks to NoMachine software. NoMachine allows Center researchers to maintain rigorous research schedules, no matter where they are located. The Center consists of more than 3,000 staff, including world-renowned scientists and Nobel Laureates, who are dedicated to understanding, treating, and preventing cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, researchers are also spread out at remote sites across North America and Europe. With NoMachine, the Center can connect 250-300 researchers to the high-performance computing (HPC) cluster, with up to 25 users connecting at the same time. NoMachine also gives Center researchers access to server-based, administrative applications that are critical to their day-to-day activities, such as Firefox, R language, and Matlab. To simplify support, the Center's scientific computing department cut the organization back to two operating systems. Now, new employees are given a Windows computer. Those who prefer to work with Linux or similar desktops are steered towards Macs with a Linux connection provided by the NoMachine NX Server. "We needed a way to offer a Linux desktop interface to a lot of people without giving them each a physical system. This way we can concentrate our support efforts on high-performance computing, instead of desktop support," explained System Administrator Carl Benson. NoMachine's NX Enterprise Server and Client software have enabled the scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to remain productive while simplifying desktop support. Whether on site or at a remote location, NoMachine provides a full Linux experience and access to x11 applications for a superior remote experience and easier administration. The software's dependability and session resiliency also make it perfect for researchers who need to monitor projects that may last for months at a time. "NoMachine is way less hassle, uses fewer resources per session on the server and is reliable," said Benson. "It has more capabilities...it's really excellent." April 12th 2012 - Dr. Jelle Barentsz demonstrated this week how modern technology, including NoMachine's remote access software, can improve physician collaboration and lead to better patient care at the TEDxMaastricht "The Future of Health" event. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Dr. Barentsz, a professor of Radiology and Chair of the Prostate MR-Center of Excellence at the Radboud University Nijmgen Medical Center, and his team use advanced MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans as a critical step to more accurate patient diagnoses. During his TEDx session, Dr. Barentsz also proved how the sharing of these images between spe[censored]ts is integral to faster, better diagnosis and treatment of tumors. During his talk, Dr. Barentsz utilized NoMachine's virtual desktop access software to jointly analyze a sample patient's MRI with colleagues in real time. While speaking at the event in Maastrict, The Netherlands, he accessed MRI software located on the hospital's clinical servers running NX Enterprise Server on Linux in Nijmegen. Dr. Barentsz then collaborated with physicians located in the United States and Australia, as well as a physician in the audience using an iPad. All four doctors were able to view the MRI at the same time and, using a medical video-conferencing program, quickly come to a consensus about treatment. Regardless of location or the network environment, NoMachine's NX software provides real-time performance in remote sessions, automatically tuning itself to network bandwidth and latency parameters. Providing security through SSH encryption, NX supplies the complete connectivity and mobility demanded by organizations today. NX also enables session shadowing, which allows multiple users to connect to the same remote sessi on simultaneously for easier collaboration. By using NX, Dr. Barentsz was able to build up what he calls a "center of excellence network." NoMachine ensures this network has a smooth, dependable and secure connection no matter what the bandwidth or environment of each team member. Struggling with considerable licensing costs, the organization needed a better solution for providing virtual desktops to their 350 employees. Based on testing and the recommendation from Dutch IT software and system solution provider, ECsys, Riagg Rijnmond implemented a new solution consisting of IGEL Linux-based thin clients, Xen hypervisor and NoMachine software. Riagg Rijnmond determined that this solution maintained their strict standards of security, dependability, and user performance. NoMachine NX, an enterprise-class solution for accessing server-based desktops and applications, made accessing desktops seamless as well as secure for employees, which is especially critical when handling electronic patient records. Employees are happy with the speed and performance provided by NoMachine. They are now able to access an easy-to-use Xubuntu desktop and all their critical business programs, including email and an open-source equivalent to Microsoft Office. Riagg Rijnmond spent a little over a year on the entire project. However, the project was so well-prepared that the actual implementation only took around two weeks to roll out. Now the daily management of user desktops is significantly easier, and it comes at a lower cost. ECsys' president, Nieck Zanen, estimates that the NoMachine/IGEL project cost about a third of the budget that would have otherwise been spent to update proprietary licenses that were part of the previous Citrix/Wyse setup. Microsoft SharePoint and LinkedIn data at risk from Framesniffing Attacks
neondrum posted a topic in Upcoming News
March 13th 2012 - Context Information Security has highlighted a weakness in Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari web browsers that enables remote attackers to steal sensitive information held on private Microsoft SharePoint sites, as well as mine data from other public websites such as LinkedIn. In these Framesniffing Attacks, a hidden HTML frame is used to load a target website inside the attacker's malicious webpage to read information about the content and structure of the framed pages. The attack bypasses browser security restrictions that are meant to prevent webpages directly reading the contents of third-party sites loaded in frames. “Using Framesniffing, it's possible for a malicious webpage to run search queries for potentially sensitive terms on a SharePoint server and determine how many results are found for each query,†said Paul Stone, senior security consultant at Context. “For example, with a given company name it is possible to establish who their customers or partners are; and once this information has been found, the attacker can go on to perform increasingly complex searches and uncover valuable commercial information.†Context researchers tested SharePoint 2007 and 2010 and found that by default, they do not send the X-Frame-Options header that instructs web browsers to disallow framing. This leaves these applications open to both Framesniffing and Clickjacking. As a result, any website that knows the URL of the SharePoint installation can load it in a frame and carry out these attacks, even if it is only accessible on an Intranet. Following the discovery of this vulnerability, Context contacted Microsoft and was told: "We have concluded our investigation and determined that this is by-design in current versions of SharePoint. We are working to set the X-Frame options in the next version of SharePoint." Framesniffing can also be used to harvest confidential data from public websites, such as LinkedIn that don’t protect against framing. An attacker using a malicious website could build a profile of visiting users by piecing together small pieces of information leaked from different websites. For example, the product IDs of previously bought items from a shopping site could be combined with a person’s user ID from a social networking site. Context’s blog published today at www.contextis.com/research/blog/framesniffing, includes a video that shows an attacker extracting sensitive information from a fictional corporate SharePoint installation. In the blog, Context also provides five simple steps to protect a website from this attack by adding the X-Frame-Options header. While Mozilla updated its Firefox web browser last year to prevent Framesniffing, the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari are still vulnerable. Fortunately, protecting a website from this attack is a simple matter of adding the X-Frame-Options header and in its blog, Context provides step-by-step instructions on how to do this. “Users of the Firefox browser are already protected against this attack,†said Stone. “We encourage other browser vendors to apply similar protection to their browsers but in the meantime, the onus is on individual websites to add framing protection via X-Frame-Options.†About Context Context Information Security is an independent security consultancy spe[censored]ing in both technical security and information assurance services.
