3DFiles and TweakFiles close down: We have been informed today that 3DFILES.COM will be closed down. The current ad situation combined with the very expensive FTP costs makes it impossible for us to survive any longer. ZDNet has been kind enough to give us time to say good bye and even choose the day that we will close, September 14, our 4 Year Anniversary. Its been a hell of a ride since we started out doing this as just a hobby page and have grown to about 800,000 visitors per day. Those of you using the free email service, it should stay online for quite some time so don´t fear. Read more TweakFiles was started around 9/99 by Tim and I, (Jim), came on board around 12/99. Since then we have grown to around 500,000 ad views per day. The problem is ad views aren´t worth what they used to be and the ftp service to host the files has grown dramatically. We found out yesterday that C|Net and GameSpot have decided to close TweakFiles down. Our final day will be 9/14/01. Read more

McAfee Virus definitions has been updated to version 4158 If you are using VirusScan 5.x, you can easily update your DAT files from the VirusScan Central (the main VirusScan menu) and click on the Update button. The DATS will be downloaded and applied for you. Updates for VirusScan, and all McAfee products that include VirusScan, ensure that your virus protection is constantly updated as cures for new virus threats are published. The cures are included in a virus definition file called a DAT file. The easiest way to obtain new DAT files is to use the UPDATE button from VirusScan 5.x Central. DAT files are published weekly, or in the event of a virus outbreak. Download

PC Hardware.ro has posted a review on the ECS K7S5A2 motherboard. With AMD processors increasing popularity it´s not a surprise that so many chipset manufacturers try to bit from VIA´s cake. The main problem of VIA chipsets is not performance (or at least most manufacturers can´t compete with VIA in the performance segment). Of course that there are a lot of users who seek for more performance from VIA based boards, but the price is the real segment where VIA can be easily attacked. We all know about ALI´s tries to manufacture a board able to compete with VIA in the low market segment, but only a few manufacturers integrated ALI and further more no many users trusted ALI´s reputation to choose such a board. I don´t mean that ALI disappointed in the past, but you have to agree that they haven´t shown much to the market. SiS (Sillicon Integrated Systems) are not much better known than ALI, but as manufacturer SiS is recognized to be quite innovative. Their latest gadget, the 735 chipset, received a lot of positive feedback from media due to its performance and, most important, its price. This low price enables manufacturers to come up with really low priced motherboards, but until now only Elite Computers Group made the big step and pushed an $80 board on the market. Today we´ll take a look to K7S5A2 the latest SiS 735 based ECS board. Read more

I am Not a Geek has posted a review on the ECS K7S5A motherboard. The 735 was developed from the ground up to be a single chip solution by gluing the North and South bridge together. The obvious upside to this is an extremely large amount of bandwidth between the two. While VIA´s V-Link technology offers around 600 MB/s transfers, the integrated SiS solution is in the neighborhood of 1.2 GB/s. (Of course 600 MB/s is more than enough speed and the 1.2 GB/s is just overkill.) This is all thanks to SiS´s Multi-threaded I/O Link technology which allows the chip to communicate with multiple devices much more effectively. Read more

Storage Review has posted a review on the Lite-On LTD-163 DVD-Rom While today´s latest DVD-ROMs still have not progressed past 16X (21.6 MB/sec) DVD reads, Lite-On has pushed CD read speeds up to 48X (7200 KB/sec) with their LTD163. Rumor has it that this drive also does 48X CAV digital audio extraction. If true, this would make it the quickest single-beam audio extractor in existence! Come with us as we examine this drive and see how it holds up compared to competition from Pioneer, Artec and others. Read more

Thanks Clutch for this one: Microsoft released today a tool called URLScan that could be a valuable security asset. It is an ISAPI filter (consequently, it will always run in process), that will analyze an incoming request and screen them according to a ruleset created by the administrator. This is the same kind of technology used by IISSecure created by Eeye which has proven to be an effective security tool. It would be ideal if a malformed or suspect URL never reached IIS for processing in the first place. Download

NeoSeeker has posted a review on the Olympus DW-90 Voice Recorder The most impressive feature I found was the VCVA feature or Variable Control Voice Actuator feature. It’s just a fancy name, but it pauses the voice recorder when there is silence and automatically records when the volume reaches a certain level. It’s great because it conserves recording space. Also, it helps with those annoying lecture recordings, containing frequent and lengthy pauses. Read more

3D Sound Surge has posted a review on the Sound Blaster Audigy sound card. Almost exactly three years has now passed since the first Live cards were released. With the launch of the Live card one of, if not the most compelling feature was Creative Labs claim that the chip that powered it, Emu10k1, could be reprogrammed through software to support new features without a performance hit. Not long after, they unveiled the new Live!Ware program, the name Creative choose for their driver upgrade program. The features that have been added over the last 3 years in software include an increase from 8 to 32 3D sound streams, dramatically improved 3D audio engine, improved reverb engine, support for occlusion and obstructions through EAX 2.0 and wide range of software programs ranging from dramatically improved configuration software (e.g. Live!Task and Surround Mixer) to completely separate programs (e.g. Oozic (formerly Lava), and MiniDisc center).
