X-bit labs has posted a review on the Intel Pentium III-S 1.13GHz (Tualatin) CPU. In this review we examined the performance of the 0.13micron Pentium III-S processor built on the new Tualatin core with 512KB L2 cache. We tried to figure out if the Pentium 4 family was so necessary for Intel or if the development of Pentium III Tualatin family could save Intel time and trouble in the mainstream and performance sectors. Thanks to Chris for this one: We, the dedicated customers and users of 3dfx products DEMAND that Nvidia support the customers of 3dfx Interactive. Last year, Nvidia purchased 3dfx Interactive (Their main competitor.), and have not lifted a finger to support existing 3dfx products. They basically bought out 3dfx to kill the company and boost sales of their own products. With the upcoming release of Windows XP, Nvidia has decided to shaft 3dfx owners by not creating compatible drivers for the new operating system. What does this mean? Well users of the Voodoo line of 3dfx card will not able to use all of the features that their card was intended for when they upgrade to Windows XP. Before, users had support for 3D API engines such as GLIDE, OpenGL and Direct 3D. With the new operating system, GLIDE and OpenGL support are gone and games like Quake 2 and 3 (which run under OpenGL) cannot be played by these users. Please sign this petition and DEMAND that Nvidia support these products. Nvidia MUST be shown that when that when they acquired 3dfx, they acquired their customers as well! Read more

2CPU has posted a review on the Tyan Tiger MP motherboard. I took some time out of my lunch break to get this one posted up for all of you. Some of you have been hounding me for weeks on this, so I am glad to finally be done with it ;-) I must admit, I did get a little carried away and I turned a simple motherboard review into a serious platform battle. All in all, I think you should be able to draw some of your own conclusions from the numbers I presented and you´ll see where dual processing is headed in the future. Enough rambling... Let´s get to it! Read more

3D Spotlight has posted a nVidia detonator drivers comparison With so many new leaked & beta detonator drivers, it is easy to get confused getting the right one. It’s not always the case that the latest version will be the fastest. Sometimes new drivers lead to a performance and/or quality decrease. Here at 3D Spotlight, we have just tested all the newer 1x.xx series of detonators, from the last official Detonator 3 drivers (version 5.13.01.1231) to the latest Detonator XP drivers (version 5.13.01.2181). 3D Spotlight has updated their weekly price guide Browsing around looking for the best deals for this week we found the top of the line, 1.4GHz Athlon selling for only $125, and the one running at 1.2GHz being sold for $98.95. In the other hand we have Intel´s Pentium 4 1.8GHz selling for $181, definitely not a bad price either. In the videocard arena, the only GeForce 3 card that has dropped its price is Visiontek´s GeForce 3 going for $315.85... GF2 MX400s go as low as $78. Last but not least, we have the excellent Acoustic Edge soundcard from Phillips with an amazing price tag, $65. Read more

TweakTown has put up a review on the Vantec CCK-6027D HSF The Vantec CCK-6035D copper sink was a good unit, but many people want something that has just a bit less volume than the whining Delta 38CFM fan that goes with it. Enter the newest HSF to carry the Vantec name; the CCK-6027D. It was designed to be smaller, lighter and quieter than it´s big brother. Come join TweakTown as we discover if they were successful, and more importantly, is it an effective cooling solution. Read more

HardOCP has posted a review on the Hercules GeForce3 video card. Thanks Brian. Hercules has been a well known name in the PC video card market for the last 19 years. They certainly have a lot of experience and a name that carries on. Guillemot Corporation acquired Hercules in October of 1999, and their 3D Prophet line of video cards are currently the ones to notice. Hercules makes many kinds of cards to cater to just about any niche they have the need to serve, whether it be the Video Editor User, the Business User, the Home User, the Casual Gamer, or the Hardcore Gamer. The 3D Prophet line includes the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX series of cards, the GeForce2 series, and now the GeForce3 series. Hercules, however, doesn´t only carry NVIDIA products. They also make cards based on other chipsets as well, most recently the KYRO 1 and KYRO 2 chipsets. Read more

.... Service to Fail The RPC endpoint mapper allows RPC clients to determine the port number currently assigned to a particular RPC service. The Windows NT 4.0 endpoint mapper contains a flaw that causes it to fail upon receipt of a request that contains a particular type of malformed data. Because the endpoint mapper runs within the RPC service itself, exploiting this vulnerability would cause the RPC service itself to fail, with the attendant loss of any RPC-based services the server offers, as well as potential loss of some COM functions. Normal service could be restored by rebooting the server. Read more

OC Workbench has posted a i845 boards shootout We probably already know that Pentium III is at it´s of the product life cycle. Pentium 4 is probably the solution that most Intel users will go for as it´s a cheaper alternative to the i850+RAMBUS solution as RAMBUS is still an expensive solution. At this moment, it seems that a Pentium 4 + SDRAM solution is the only available right now. The Pentium 4 price reduction over the months has also made it a viable solution for those who just prefers the to use Intel over rival AMD. In The review we will take a look at 4 boards and they are Chaintech 9BJA, Gigabyte 8IDX?ABIT BL7-RAID and FASTFAME 8IFE. Read more

TweakTown has posted a review on the Intel Pentium4 2GHz processor. The Intel Pentium 4 processor has had a somewhat rocky entry into the market since it´s release earlier this year. Intel´s marketing ideas have been criticised by most media sources around the world for the expensive RDRAM, and developing technology for tomorrow but not today. Come join TweakTown as we tell you everything you need to know about the new Intel Pentium 4 2GHz 478-pin processor, and the lead up to it from the very beginning of the Intel processor line. Accelenation.com has posted a review on the Intel 845 chipset as well as four production boards. Now, besides the difference in memory support, there won’t be a whole lot of difference between 845 and 850. As a matter of fact, as we’ll soon see, even the small differences you would expect (latency) remain similar. Simply put, this product is meant to fill a gap in the market and offer more inexpensive Pentium 4 desktops to OEM’s and System Integrators. Read more
