StorageReview has posted a review on the Fujitsu MPG3204AH-E harddisk. The MPG-AH ships exclusively with an ATA-100 interface. Remember, since ATA drives have yet to break sequential transfer rates greater than even 45 MB/sec that ATA-66 (and in many cases, even ATA-33) interfaces will run a drive with optimal performance. Our testbed remains equipped with a Promise Ultra66 controller. Read more

Neoseeker has posted a review on the Antec JetCool Socket 370 HSF When you take out the sink from the packaging, you’ll notice an interesting design as it features aluminum radial folding fins wrapped around a central copper core. The core measures at 29-mm diameter by 34 mm high. The aluminum fins are not bonded to the copper core. The heat transfer from the core to the fins is done by a layer of thermal grease which lies between the base of the aluminum fins and the core. Read more

Thanks to CestLaVie for this one: The European Commission has informed Microsoft Corp. that it believes that the US software company may have violated European antitrust rules by using illegal practices to extend its dominant position in the market for personal computer operating systems into the market for low-end server operating systems. Low-end server systems are cheaper servers usually used as file and print servers as well as Web servers. In a Statement of Objections, the Commission also alleges that Microsoft is illegally tying its Media Player product with its dominant Windows operating system. This Statement of Objections supplements one sent to the company a year ago and adds a new dimension to the Commission´s concerns that Microsoft´s actions may harm innovation and restrict choice for consumers. A Statement of Objections is a formal step in European antitrust proceedings which does not prejudge the final outcome. Read more

Overclockers Melbourne has reviewed the Philips 107p10 Professional 17" Flatscreen CRT Monitor Your Monitor. The part of your home or work computer you spend nearly all of your computer time using. When you aren´t using keys or pointing aimlessly with your mouse, you are reading text from some anonymous website, chat windows from IRC, messages in ICQ, emails in outlook, or watching DVDs or other Multimedia Applications. In fact, the only time you may not be using your monitor while using your computer would be when you are listening to MP3 or CD audio from a distance. Even then you may use your monitor to display visualisation scopes or other displays. All of these applications aren´t in black and white, they are in many millions of colors, many in vibrant shades of reds, oranges, greens, blues and nearly any other color your eyes are capable of seeing. Viper´s Lair has put up a review on the Swiftech MC462A heatsink The Swiftech MC462A beats out the Vantec CCK-6035D by about 2C/4F degrees, and destroys everyone else by quite a substantial margin. Although 2C/4F doesn´t seem like a whole lot, I think that with faster CPUs, which run hotter (Palomono cores are supposed to address the heat issues), the Swiftech MC462A will be better suited due to the mass of it. TacoNuts has put up a review on the Battle Lamp. It is a gooseneck lamp for gaming in low light. Upon opening the package, I thought the Battle Lamp would be a handy item for late night gaming. It has a strong clamp that’s not too large to find a spot for. The dimmer switch is useful for giving off just the right amount of light for your after dark computing needs. And, being unable to touch-type myself, I figured that it would be just what I need for typing up that last minute paper or e-mail at midnight. Read more

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer get most of the ink, but Microsoft´s near- and long-term fortune is going to depend on the abilities of one Jim Allchin. Allchin, a group vice president and 11-year company veteran, is in charge of Windows XP, the operating system upgrade that Microsoft--and a good part of the computer industry--hopes will help kick-start moribund demand for PCs come the fourth quarter. Overclocked Cafe has posted a review on the Fortis A102 CPU cooler The copper base is 5mm thick, and the fact they used aluminum for the fin design keeps the weight down to minimal. They´ve also "built" the aluminum around the copper base, using a rod that runs through the body of the heatsink, and then riveting it secure (see middle picture below). What it does is help to "seal" the copper base, into the aluminum shell. This where a lot of manufacturers falter, trying place a piece of copper inside a cut out in the aluminum isn´t going to get the job done - there will always be a gap between the copper and aluminum when it is done that way (Confucius say trying to squeeze copper base plate into aluminum cut-out like two male dogs humping - it look like it work but they beat head against wall). You can squeeze as much paste as you want to fill the gaps, but it´s not going to work. It´s best to get an ice bucket, and shove cubes in between, it´s your only shot at keeping it cool. Read more

Brian Swales of Open Tech Support has written a short piece about the licensing plans that Microsoft intends for its future products. Back on May 10, 2001, Microsoft announced plans to change its licensing programs. They used words like enhancement, simplification, flexibility, convenient and less expensive. These words work fine for the sixty percent of their corporate and OEM client base. But, the other forty percent of the home and small business users are going to suffer. Microsoft has indirectly hidden these new changes to the general consumer under their Volume Licensing Programs. Read more
