RatedPC has posted a review on the ASUS A7M266 motherboard. As the DDR prices have drastically dropped and the 266MHz FSB processors are also reduced in price, it only makes sense to consider buying a DDR-Athlon system at this time of the year. Your choice of chipsets would include: ALi MAGiK, VIA KT266, AMD-760, and SiS 735 which is the most recent. Although we maybe a few months late in our presentation, we have reason to believe that the AMD-760 still deserves a serious consideration and there is a logic why it continues to be in demand. We will be looking at the ASUS A7M266, and see how it still holds up in the industry. Read more

TacoNuts has put up the third edition of the Gaming Screwdriver. Unlike Max Payne, however, Serious Sam seems to have been made for multiplayer. I know, I know, it’s been out since Granny was riding horses in her youth, but I’ve just begun to appreciate the complexities of…aw, nevermind. There are no complexities. Just lots of Sams bucking down both other players and monsters alike with gratuitous firepower. Read more

BoomGames has posted a review of a new device - The Claw. Since the dawn of FPS´s (First Person Shooters) the standard for top level players has always been the mouse and keyboard. Sure, quite a few companies have come out with "the next great thing" but in the end, they´ve always flopped. Take for example the Fragmaster, an odd shaped multi axis joystick controller with a bazzilion buttons on it. Original retail, $100.00, on close out, I saw stores giving them away with rebate. It´s just hard to compete with the mouse and keyboard because it works so well. Read more

Serial Addiction has posted a review on the Dragon Orb 3 Ah yes, yet another orb style heatsink from our good friends at ThermalTake. The Dragon Orb 3 follows the same design as its orb siblings. The Question is weather or not it will follow the same lacking performance trend. Read more

Slautech has posted a review on the Noise Control Silverado CPU cooler The Silverado is the quietest cooler, although the YSTech case fan is almost inaudible, but that´s just a fan by itself. The only problem is, you need a quiet computer to take advantage of the low noise generated by the Silverado. I have 3 hard drives in my system and they are louder than the Silverado. The 4 case fans also drown out the Silverado, and the Enermax "whisper quiet" PSU isn´t exactly that quiet once it´s been running for a while (my system seems to make huge power demands on it). TweakMax has posted a review on the Dell Poweredge 2550 Server Intel CPU´s + more than 512 MB RAM = i8XX and RDRAM? No, actually not... Is it BX then? Nope, it´s a ServerWorks HE-SL chipset that is powering a lot of server motherboards today. ServerWorks has found a niche that Intel currently not is serving, providing the cabability to, among other things, run Intel CPU´s in up to 8x configurations featuring up to 8 GB of plain ol´ ECC DIMMs, making it unneccesary for server manufacturers to jump onto the RDRAM bandwagon. Digit-Life has posted a review on the NVIDIA Quadro2 Go The NVIDIA Quadro2 Go is a hybrid of a professional and mobile graphics solution. As we may suspect, such development costs NVIDIA only a certification of professional drivers for the GeForce2 Go, which we have already written about. But such certification of drivers for basic professional packets, correspondence to the OpenGL 1.3 standard and some hardware standards (SpeedStep, ACPI etc.) costs much and brings problems. Besides, the company also had to develop these drivers. But in this case it wasn´t a problem: the drivers are standard and changes are not great as compared with Quadro MXR. In fact, an identification chip code is different. And that´s all. All professional possibilities are enabled in the drivers on a program level, and there is even a utility which can get drivers identify any card based on GeForce 256/2/3 chip as a corresponding professional model. T-Break has posted a review on MSI´s SiS735 chipset based board- the K735. One thing we noticed was that if you change the clock multiplier and the system fails to POST, just wait for a few seconds and the multiplier is automatically adjusted to it´s original setting- pretty neat. However, changing FSB speeds and not being able to POST doesn´t reset the FSB speed to the CPU default. Read more

Adrian´s Rojak Pot has posted a review on the 16x10x40x Lite-On BURN-Proof CD-RW drive BURN-Proof, as you would have read from the previous review, was developed by Sanyo to overcome the "buffer under-run" error that plagues most CD-RW users. For those of you who don´t know what a buffer under-run is, it´s an error that occurs when the computer cannot stream the needed data to the CD-RW drive fast enough for the burning process to proceed normally. As older CD-RW drives cannot pause the burning process to ´wait´ for the needed data, a burn error occurs, creating a coaster (unusable CD). As such, everyone using a CD-RW drive soon develops a fear of disrupting the data stream from the system to the CD-RW drive. That´s why people will tell you NOT to do anything with your PC when you´re burning a CD. Read more

Hardware Extreme´s reader has posted a review on the ATI TV Wonder USB Edition I wanted TV capabilities on my machine downstairs where I had no TV. I searched reviews and found a very positive review of the ATI WONDER USB. This fit my profile for such a device, because I did not want to use a PCI slot. The ATI TV WONDER USB is a pretty red tanslucent box crammed with an RF demodulator, USB and composit video interfaces and the USB connection. You plug it in and follow directions to load drivers and then the software. Read more

GideonTech.com has posted a review on the Swiftech MCX370-0A cooler. The heatsink differs from the previous model in that each individual pin is ribbed. Labeled as a helicoid pin design, it supposedly increases the pin´s surface area 2:1. That´s quite a jump in surface area! A total of 188 pins are mounted onto the base, each with its own helicoid design. It is also mentioned that this new design creates micro-turbulence which causes more airflow. Read more

Digit-Life has posted Part II of their VIA Apollo Pro266 motherboards roundup At last DDR SDRAM has become equal in price to usual SDRAM almost all throughout the world. New advanced revisions of DDR chipset for Athlon and renewed mainboards make the difference between a progressive well-balanced DDR platform and a SDRAM based one stronger. But Athlon based systems make only one third of the market. And what do we have in other two thirds? Read more

Serial Addiction has posted a review on the Compex DS2216 Dual Speed Switch Why use a switch instead of a hub? They both do the same thing, and a hub is cheaper right? Wrong! Hubs and Switches are very different. I guess the easiest way to explain the differences would be, If you had a 4 or 6 port hub running at say 100Mb/s all those ports would share the same bandwidth but with a switch allows all the ports to have a full 100Mb/s of bandwidth. It is much more economical to use a switch on any network with more than 6 computers, as you can guess 6 computers sharing 100Mb/s can get very slow. Read more
