Smartline has released Beta 1 of DeviceLock 5.0, a security and network management software for Windows 2000/NT/XP DeviceLock gives network administrators control over which users can access what devices (ports, floppies, Magneto-Optical disks, etc.) on a local computer. Once DeviceLock is installed, administrators can assign permissions to LPT ports, CD-ROMs, COM ports or any other device, just as they would to share-permissions on a hard disk. Network administrators can use DeviceLock to flush a storage device´s buffers (very useful for removable media) and to get extended information about devices and NTFS partitions. Remote control is also available. With DeviceLock you can: - Control which users or groups can access devices - Flush unsaved file buffers - Get extended information about devices (file systems, partitions, etc.) - Get extended information about NTFS partitions (MFT size, position, etc.) - Control all functions remotely - Use its powerful but easy multilingual interface - Install and uninstall it automatically - Use native versions for Intel x86 and Compaq Alpha platforms. Accelenation has posted a review on the Matrox Marvel G450 eTV video card. The other G450 product is the Marvel G450 eTV which, unlike the Marvel G400, doesn´t feature the breakout box that houses all audio-visual connectors. Instead, there are two cables supplied for the audio-video inputs and outputs. The G450 also features DualHead, but not the same DualHead as the Millennium line. Whereas the Millennium allows you to connect two monitors or one monitor and a TV, the G450 eTV only offers the latter. In essence, G450 eTV features TV out, which Matrox calls "DualHead TV-Out". NeoSeeker has posted a review on the OCZ Titan3 GeForce 3 video card. Half a year has passed since NVIDIA first revealed the Geforce3 (also known as the NV20) to the world. Not performing as well as was expected on the standard video benchmarks, it first appeared as though this new technology had failed to meet up to the hype. But upon a closer look, it was discovered that the true problem rest in the hands of the reviewers (more specifically the benchmarking software and techniques) and not with the chip itself. The “standard” benchmarks were not optimized to take advantage of the uber-cool new features of the Geforce3. Read more

I am Not a Geek dot com has posted a review on The Funnel. This is an Air Funnel, that allows you to put an 80mm fan on a 60mm heatsink. The 38CFM Delta fan which most commonly comes with the SK-6 has noise level of 47 dBA. I used an 80mm Thermaltake case fan, which is 2900RPM, and has 37CFM of airflow, but a noise level of only 30 dBA which is quieter than a whisper. Both these fans are going to be made louder than their specified volumes because of the air resistance. Read more

Like a summer cold that just won´t go away, the SirCam e-mail worm lingers on, sending out the contents of infected hard drives for all the world to see. Even as most companies have prevented their networks from spreading the bug, individual computer users continue to send out infected files day after day, with the worm piggybacking on documents ranging from confidential to comical: recipes, shopping lists and lots and lots of resumes. The result is that SirCam is still spreading two weeks after it first cropped up. Read more

Tweak Town has posted a review on Antec´s EasyUSB Antec is normally well known for their killer cases, but they have recently taken to offering products in a number of different categories. The Antec EasyUSB falls into one of these other categories. It offers the convenience of front panel USB ports, and also doubles up as a 5.25" to 3.5" drive bay converter. Take a look at the review and also check out our new web design! Read more

The Tech Report has put up a review on Abit´s KT7E motherboard THE FIRST THING YOU´LL NOTICE about the KT7E is its color. A departure from the traditionally drab PCBs of old, Abit has dressed up this Socket A offering in a lovely shade of blue. Unless your PC´s case has a window in it or you really care what color your motherboard PCB is, the color blue is likely the least significant feature of the KT7E. While I don´t profess to know why the KT7E is blue, the fact that it is could provide some preliminary hints on its personality. Read more

Digit-Life has posted a review on the MSI StarForce822 (MS 8822) NVIDIA GeForce3 based video card. The MSI StarForce822 (MS 8822) has AGP x2/x4 interface, 64 MBytes DDR SDRAM memory located in 8 chips on the right side of the PCB. EliteMT produces memory chips with 3.8 ns access time, which corresponds to 260 (520) MHz. Like all other GPU GeForce3 cards, this one works at 200/230 (460) MHz. The memory modules lack for sufficient cooling; heatsinks typical of such fast memory are absent. The card works excellently at the reduced frequency (230 MHz) relatively the rated one (260 MHz). But if the card warms up significantly, especially when the case is closed, it becomes dangerous. Read more

Accelenation has posted their review of EPoX´s new 8KTA3Pro motherboard based of the VIA KT133A chipset. The original 8KTA3 is a KT133A board that sold pretty well, especially in the face of stiff competition from Abit, Asus, and Iwill. The 8KTA3+ is the same board, but with RAID. The 8KTA3Pro is a NEW board that EPoX has produced to reflect users suggestions which were made about the original 8KTA3. Read more

3dXtreme has posted a review on Powercolor´s Geforce2 mx400. The Geforce 2 MX was getting old, hence the new Geforce 2 MX 400. This card comes with 64 megs of Ram at 166MHz and core speed of 200 Mhz. Will this added boost in amount of memory and core speed be enough over the cheaper original Geforce 2 MX to make it a better buy? Is this new card worth upgrading from your old Voodoo 3, Geforce 256, TNT, Intergrated Graphics , or even its older brother the Original Geforce 2 MX? It took less than a week for me to get this board from Powercolor and I must say, they believe in quality. The box is smaller than those you will see by Hercules and the other manufacturers, but it has all the neccessary information you will need on the back. When I opened the box I found out the board was equiped with a heatsink/fan combo, TV-out, DVI connector, RCA cable, S-video cable, driver cd, WinDVD 2000, and a full copy of Unreal Tournament (2 CD´s). For the estimated price of $129 US that it runs, it seems to be a pretty good package deal. Read more

X-bit labs has posted a Seagate U Series 6 HDD review. We reviewed the newest hard disk drive from Seagate, which is especially interesting since it features the platters with the highest capacity available today: 40GB. Although the drive doesn´t break any performance records, it is undoubtedly a very attractive solution due to three main highs: simple construction, low cost per gigabyte and high reliability. Tweak3D has posted a review on the Gainward GeForce3 video card. I was lucky enough to receive Gainward’s newest product, the GeForce3 PowerPack!!! for reviewing purposes. As I found out, this wasn’t your ordinary PowerPack!!! as it had a “golden sample” sticker on the front. I wasn’t exactly sure what the “golden sample” sticker signified but according to Overclockers Austrailia the “golden sample” cards are cards that tested much higher than the normal PowerPack!!! cards and are guaranteed to run at a speed of at least 220 MHz for the core and 480 MHz for the memory. I was anxious to test out all the features and play around with the utilities, so I quickly opened up the package and got to work. Read more

I am Not a Geek dot com has posted a review on the Enermax EG651P-VE power supply Above I have recreated the power chart from the side of the EG651P-VE. There are 5 types of power created by an ATX power supply which our +3.3V, +5V, +12V, -5V, -12V, and +5Vsb. An ATX motherboard uses all 6 types of power. Most drives use +5V and + 12V that is why there are four wires on the power connectors for hard drives. The two black wires are grounds the yellow is +12V and the red is +5V. And every case fan I have ever seen runs off of +12V. Read more

Storage Review has posted a review on the Artec CHA-52 16X DVD-Rom CD-ROM drives have come a long way since their humble 1X beginnings in 1987. Along the way, we´ve seen proprietary interfaces, a change in read styles from CLV to CAV, and finally stagnation in read speeds. Current CAV-style readers top out at 56X maximum transfers, or 8.4 MB/sec. The reason for the limitation is related to spindle speeds. Whereas the 1X readers of yesteryear topped out at about 200 RPM, today´s 56X readers spin at a constant 12,000 RPM. Such spindle speeds not only create high vibration and noise-levels, they also require precise balancing in order to maintain read accuracy. Read more

DivX 4.0 Beta 3 is out. Thanks Swift1. So what´s new in DivX 4.0 Beta 3? Well, it´s completely re-written to improve performance and visual quality. The code base is different from all earlier versions, including the open-source OpenDivX codec. Bugs Fixed in the DivX 4.0 Beta 3 DivX decoder registered itself for 3.x formats even if user answered "No" when installing Found one more bug in 3.x decoder Fixed problem with quality loss when encoding at height not multiple of 16 and low resolution Fixed crash when encoding on Pentium II / Celeron machines (accidentally introduced in beta 2) Fixed noise problems in playing 3.x content More accurate 2-pass VBR Rearranged controls in encoder config dialog Download

3D Spotlight has posted a review on the Vidid!XS Kyro 2 based video card. Tile Based (Deferred) Rendering. The Kyro2 divides the screen into multiple tiles (Hence why it’s called Tile based rendering) of 32x16 pixels. The number of tiles created varies with screen resolution, e.g. 1536 tiles are created at 1024*768, while only 600 tiles are at 640*480. Each of these tiles is then tested by the On-chip Tile-Buffer to determine whether or not the pixels are visible. Should they not be visible then they are disregarded & nothing more need be done with them in the rendering process. Read more
