PC Stats has posted a review on the Hitachi CM828 21 inch CRT Monitor Now before we get too far off topic, the Hitachi CM828 we are looking at today is a large screen 21" display based on an Invar shadow mask and housed in a cabinet about the size of what a 19" display would typically use. With the CM828 sitting next to my 19" ADI E66 Microscan it´s difficult to tell from the rear, which display should be the larger one. Both units are about the same volume. On a more down to earth level, the smaller cabinet makes moving the display a bit easier, although it´s still quite heavy at 27 kilos. Read more

McAfee Virus definitions has been updated to version 4151 If you are using VirusScan 5.x, you can easily update your DAT files from the VirusScan Central (the main VirusScan menu) and click on the Update button. The DATS will be downloaded and applied for you. The cures are included in a virus definition file called a DAT file. The easiest way to obtain new DAT files is to use the UPDATE button from VirusScan 5.x Central. DAT files are published weekly, or in the event of a virus outbreak. Download

Adrian´s Rojak Pot has posted a on the Zalman CNPS5000-Plus CPU cooler for Intel Socket 423 and AMD Socket A CPUs Zalman is the first cooler manufacturer to come up with a completely different cooling concept. Instead of relying on more powerful fans, they concentrated on the heat sink. They hope to create a heat sink that´s so efficient that even a slower and quieter fan can make it run better than competing designs using a much faster fan. The fruit of their labour? The uniquely bizarre flower heat sink. Today, Ken Ng takes a look at their top cooler for the Intel Socket 423 and AMD Socket A CPUs - the Zalman CNPS5000-Plus! Will Zalman´s concept of slow-blow fans and radical heat sink design win the day? Or will the CNPS5000-Plus end up a beautiful and very expensive paper weight, just like the Orbs that everyone used to be so crazy about? There´s only one way to find out! Read more

The Guru of 3D has posted a Matrox G550 preview This card has an advanced Headcasting engine containing... An Extended Vertex Shader A DirectX 8 Palette Skinning Matrix and Real-Time Accelleration for Photo Realistic Faces These are great features but there is one downside (and a large one at that). This extended vertex Shader and Palette skinning matrix can only be used for communication using 3D Rendered Heads (more on that in a moment). This is the only thing it can be used in , it can´t be used in games like the Geforce 3´s Pixel And Vertex Shaders can. Read more

Microsoft´s decision to give PC makers more freedom in customizing Windows XP may give profit-starved computer manufacturers an unexpected windfall: cash bonuses from software makers, Internet service providers and other companies eager to gain a spot on the operating system´s desktop and Start menu. Several PC makers report fierce negotiations with a variety of software companies and service providers for valuable Windows XP real estate, but none yet reports reaching a final agreement. An unplanned cash boon from prime placement of icons could bolster manufacturers´ bottom lines as PC sales hover at record lows. Read more

Overclockers Australia has posted a Windows XP review A short while ago, Microsoft released RC1 (or beta 2505) of its latest and greatest OS, Windows XP. From what I´ve seen, it´s a worthwhile upgrade, or at least it will be. XP will come in a variety of versions, XP Home Edition to replace 98 & Me, Professional to replace Windows 2000 Professional, and then the Server editions for the Corporates. Proffesional supports up to 2 processors and 4GB of RAM, so should be plenty for the average overclocker. This is not going to be an ad for all the ´wonderful´ and ´useful´ new features, but more of my view of XP, from the perspective of a newbie overclocker. Read more

Accelenation has posted a review on the ECS K7VTA3 KT266 motherboard. The VIA KT266 chipset is probably the most nebulous right now. People aren´t sure whether it is ready for the spotlight because of spotty stability and some major issues. And even though they are still using the ´first revision´ of KT266, these issues seem to have been worked out by manufacturers like ECS, Asus, and Shuttle. All that is left is nailing the performance. Read more

HardOCP has posted a review on the Alpha PAL8045 HSF. The Swiftech 462 Model cooler has been known to be the best cooling HSF on the market, but also packing the highest price of pretty much any air cooler aimed at the retail market. While Alpha has been dormant in the retail sector for quite some time now, they have decided to show back up on the scene, and not with just any old cooling solution. They are back and have their sights directly aimed at removing Swiftech from the throne. Read more

Dan´s Data has posted a review on the Trackman Wheel and the WingMan Action Gamepad from Logitech The TrackMan Wheel is a trackball with the buttons of a wheelie-mouse, and its design manages to be highly groovy yet rather comfortable. As long as you´re right handed. The WingMan Action Gamepad, on the other hand, is a fairly cheap button-encrusted game controller that gives you every control you´re likely to need - including an analogue stick and a throttle - for any game that doesn´t use a mouse for main control. GideonTech has posted a review on 3 Zalman´s most popular heatsinks, the CNPS 2005,3100 and the 5000. Zalman Tech is the worlds first company to produce functional heatsinks and computer equipment at a noise level of 20 dB or lower. While other companies have gone with bigger and louder HSF. Zalman took a different approach to the problem, instead of mounting a relatively small heatsink to a very loud and high CFM fan, Zalman worked on ways to triple the surface area of other heatsinks, which allows for excellent cooling and a low noise environment. Today we will be looking at three of the Zalman coolers, the CNPS2005, CNPS3100, and the CNPS5000. Read more

Microsoft has released Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 Service Pack 2 Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is a bug-fix release for the Beta 2 English releases. The worm will scan the Internet from infected servers, searching for servers that do not have Microsoft´s fix in place. As more systems become infected, the worm´s propagation will increase, potentially resulting in the Internet slowdown. But there is hope that the "second wave" of the worm will not be as devastating as the first. According to Microsoft, as of late Monday, more than 1 million patches had been downloaded. Experts hope that the estimated 6 million potential targets will be patched by Tuesday´s deadline. Read more

Corporate behemoths Microsoft and Eastman Kodak exchanged harsh words Tuesday over the digital photography features that are built into Windows XP, the forthcoming upgrade to Microsoft´s ubiquitous operating system. The showdown took place at an event in New York City where Microsoft and 20 companies extolled the features in Windows XP for loading, manipulating, storing and printing digital photos. Kodak, however, sought to grab the spotlight and divert it to some features of XP that it claims limit consumer choice. Read more

I am Not a Geek dot com has posted a review on a AMD CPU unlocking kit A lot of you have probably unlocked Athlon´s and Duron´s the same way I have, using a mechanical pencil to join the L1 bridges. Many people doubted the author who first wrote the article about unlocking these chips with a pencil, but to many peoples surprise it turned out that it worked. While it did work many people found that over time it stopped working and the lines had to be redrawn. Read more

FrostyTech has posted a review on the Dynatron Model-L Microfin heatsink Needless to say, when we opened up the generic white box the DC1206BM-L comes in, we weren´t expecting to be surprised in the way we were. There in a little bit of bubble wrap was a rather unique aluminum heatsink, with a blue fan, and low and behold, a hard plastic cover protecting the base! Now, we´ve seen bits of thin plastic protecting thermal interface materials before, but this is the first heatsink I´ve seen with a hard shell over the base. After struggling for a brief moment to remove the protective cover we were greeted by a perfectly face milled square of aluminum that was nice and smooth. It was at this point, while looking at the base of the heatsink that we noticed how the fins were made from a one-piece unit... Read more
