Right. Your first post didn't mention you'd already rejected the offered solutions... It is possible to have a scripted process kick off after a connection has been made. Look at the Security tab of the connection properties. In the lower half you can specify a script to run - examples are included - which can register your IP after a successful log on. You can also use this to test the connect speed - I have a script which will drop and reconnect if the speed is less than 40kbaud.

Please don't take this as a personal rip, but I find it a little sad that you obviusly haven't even read the site you've given the link to, before posting your question (which should really be in the Networking forum) The "how to" page on the site - http://www.dyndns.org/dyndns/howto.shtml - gives a very good overview of how to set up dynamic hosting, and from there you can find the list of client software - http://www.dyndns.org/dyndns/clients.shtml - to automate the re-registration process.

If using IDE, don't have other devices on the swap channel - especially if it is a CDR, unless you need more coasters.

All right, I admit it. jdulmage is actually my half-brother. We were seperated at birth for fighting over mother's milk, and again at age 12. Normally we keep him locked in Vermont, but recently he's learned to use the Internet by vibrating the phone line that passes the ventilation brick nearest his elbow. Please keep calm, and do nothing to startle him. Normal services will be resumed once the parson climbs down from the steeple...

It's a good idea to set the page/swap file to a single size for both min and max - that way it doesn't fragment. Unless, of course, you dedicate an entire drive to it...

Pretty much nothing that is installed and running as a service "by default" can be easily removed. If you post a list of what is running, we can point you at anything extranious.

Um. Guys. You need to remember that many people do not have multi-boot or additional machines. They may only have one, non-Win9x/DOS machine, and therefore have no hope of doing as you suggest. I would recommend going to the support section of www.dell.com, and searching for a file called CDENAB.EXE. This is a self-extracting disk image, which runs under everything including W2K, that will create a DOS 6.22 boot disk to access an IDE CD-ROM - the name stands for CD-Enabler. I would post a link to the file itself, but I can't be arsed as I've posted it before.

Ah, but have you started using ICS? I did, and that's how I fixed browsing the workgroups.

I too have just bought the game, and I'm extremely pissed off with it. It frequently crashes, auto-saves when I don't want it too, and won't let me re-assign the hat to cycle weapons. However, I have found that shutting down as much as possible (AIM, HotSync, Intellipoint, Outlook, etc) before running it reduces the incidence of crashes.

What the f.... Why is Win2k debugging!!!
YuppieScum replied to Marcus1's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Good point. I had assumed that everybody would be running gold code by now... -
There is no DX Control Panel applet shipped with W2K, so the version you have must be from Win9x - which would explain why it's not having much luck getting the version number right. 3dMark99 and MI3 were both written (IIRC) before DX7 and W2K, so again are having trouble. I would suggest that MI3 was just badly coded, and didn't use the MS-approved method of determining DX version.

What the f.... Why is Win2k debugging!!!
YuppieScum replied to Marcus1's topic in Customization & Tweaking
What a well-reasoned and coherently thought-out post. There are two issues here - one is the script debugger in IE5, the second the GPF handler. To fix option one, in IE5 select Tools, Options, Advanced. From there, check the "disable script debugging" box. This will no longer inform you when viewing a badly written web page. For the second, run "drwtsn32". Now uncheck the "create crash dump file" box. Easy really. FWIW, all this is contained in the on-line dox that ship with W2K. -
By default, the "guest" account is disabled on W2K - enabling it will allow you to create public shares. The are many potential security problems with doing this (discussed extensively elsewhere on this forum) so be careful.

To get "Network Neighbourhood" working, you must: 1. Ensure that all machines are in the same workgroup. 2. Install NetBEUI on each machine, in addition to TCP/IP Enjoy. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Quote: I'm curious, I don't know these things, but how long has it been since the release of the Windows 2000 SDK and how long does it take to write drivers? The SDK for W2K (and DDK for that matter) has been made available for each milestone release (beta1, beta2, rc0, rc1, etc) at the same time as the release. To write drivers can take from 1 day to forever, depending. Certainly any competent, professional development group should have had drivers ready to go well before the "ship date" in February - I know that we did ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Which bit of Norton 2000 do you actually need to work?

Bollocks. From DOS, you can FORMAT x: /S any HD partition, no matter what was there already - NTFS, FAT32, Linux Swap, BeOS, whatever. I suspect that the value is hard-coded. I searched the registry for the data value "10", and turned up nothing of note...

I've no clue, but I'll keep my eye out for something... Keep it sane. I'd recommend putting "for sale" and other such "off-topic" postings in this "Other" list, and petition the moderators to add a "for sale/wanted" forum. However, there's a whole mess of legal nonsense in explicitly aloowing others to offer items for sale - try reading E-Bay's terms and conditions...

The problem is actually hardware & software. The modem would need to be aware of the particular call-waiting tones used by your telco, and then signal the "modem user" - in this case DUN (dial-up networking) or equivalent - to close the connection and flip to the other line. This is currently not possible with the dial-up built in to Win9x and NT/W2K. I'm also pretty certain that no modems will do this either. I'd recommend www.efax.com as a solution. --- Update: I've just found this thread - http://www.ntcompatible.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/001129.html - which mentions a "call waiting" modem. This may give you the solution to the hardware half of the problem. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval) [This message has been edited by YuppieScum (edited 26 April 2000).]

SOL means "sh1t out of luck" Have you looked at HP's support site? They have W2K drivers (some beta) for most printers, and a schedule for release of full drivers. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)
