Dual boot now with WinNT/Win2k, would like to change to win9
YuppieScum replied to Tim Bazzinett's topic in Hardware
Boot from a floppy. Format the C: drive install W9x. Boot with W2K CD and repair the bootloader. Job done. -
Aha! Check the device order on the chain - some burners are SCSI-2 so should be "closer" to the controller than SCSI-1 devices. Also, if it's the last device on a chain - check the termination, both it'f its on and if it's active or passive - and try and match the termination type on the controller.

Yup, 56K - well, 42.6K actually - and in a new time zone. Dial-up sux...

Make sure you've got the latest Adaptec ASPI layer, then hit the Yamaha suport site and get the latest firmware for the drive... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Um...OK. How about checking the cable itself...and is there another non-UDMA device on the same IDE channel? Also, does W2K have drivers for the mobo/UDMA?

Anyone know of any free internet programs that work with Win

FreeServe also works, as does BTClick. www.freeserve.co.uk www.btclick.co.uk ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval) -
Just my $0.02 to throw in... I've just built a box using a Tyan Trinity 400 mobo - Via chipset, 4x AGP, ATA/66, PCI & DIMM clock divisor - and a P-III 550E on an MSI Slot1-FCPGA card. Machine is up 24*7 and has been rock-solid since I built it. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

EddiE314 : Yup, I'm back - and with 535 post still only "Senior Member" HarU : Yes, they're both MS sticks, but their are several points to make... 1. Just 'cos the hardware is from the same company as the OS, doesn't mean it'll work. Ever tried the MS Phone under W2K? 2. There are several "moving parts" to this problem... [*]stick itself [*]game port hardware [*]game port driver [*]stick driver [*]directx [*]game [/list:u] If my sticks work on my setup (and FWIW so do the generic no-name game pads I have) but another stick doesn't, the problem is more likely to be the stick driver than DirectX. However, without knowing which sticks, ports and drivers people are having issues with...we can only make a "best guess" as to what might be wrong. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Pretty obvious I know, but have you checked a) The IDE channel is set up for DMA in the BIOS The drive itself supports DMA

One question I have to ask... Which joysticks are people having problems with under W2K? Both my MS 3D PP and MS FF Pro work perfectly. Perhaps its the game port hardware or driver, or even the stick driver that is at fault... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

I've been moving from NYC-USA to London-UK, and just got back on-line. The answer to Q1 and Q3 is almost certainly "use NTFS not FAT". W2K's file/dir security is not offered on FAT. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Win2k won't install programs...any suggestions?
YuppieScum replied to The Candyman's topic in Software
Patience. Wait for 5 or 10 minutes after starting SETUP.EXE... -
Search the forum - this question has been answered twice in the last 3 days...

I'm not going to answer any more until you have to courtesy to at least actually quote the error message...

System config ideally should be more than "Acer Notebook" - see above. Does the same error occur if you boot from the W2K CD? Have you turned off any "virus checking" features in the BIOS of the machine? They can sometimes be misdiagnosed by/interfere with the install process. And finally - there may be a bootblock virus which would not nesseccarily mis-spelt but i've had no coffee yet) go away just because you've reformatted.
-
You could boot from the CD. Also you could tell us your system config. And finally, tell us what the fscking error message is. This forum seems to be turning into the bloody Kreskin show...maybe I'll change my nick to "Uri Geller"...jeez ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval) [This message has been edited by YuppieScum (edited 08 March 2000).]

Mac mouse is completely hardware/firmware based - at a far lower level that the OS. Have you tried it? Does it work? If yes, then yes. If no, then call back. Elsewhere has been posted that 3.7 works. So, upgrade to 3.7 and it will work. The Voodoo2 "kludgepack" is not from 3DFX - is was put together by Anthony Toaste of this forum...and it works great if you follow the instructions. The W2K native drivers don't support either D3D or OpenGL - so you need to download later versions from NVIDIA. Also, there is a known issue with Athalon mobos and AGP - get the latest patch... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Have you installed the Iomega W2K ZIP DRive software? What happens if you unplug and replug the drive?
-
You can also check the same key under HKEY_CURRENT_USER
-
Have you configured the parallel post to ECP or EPP?
