Windows 2000 access from a LAN..

We need to know a bit more about your network infrastructure before giving any absolute answers...but Unless you plan on playing IPX-only multiplayer games, uninstall IPX/SPX. Get the latest drivers for the cards. If you have 100mb capable cards in both machines (and either a back-to-back cable or 100mb hub) manually set the card speeds to 100mb instead of auto. If it's a back-to-back cable or a switch, set the duplex to full. If you fancy setting the network up properly, remove NETBEUI, and just config TCP/IP properly (a whole opst in it's own right) That should get you started...

smp Q3 problems. can you help?

If by crash you mean the PC "hard locks", then this is a known problem, and has been discussed extensively here. You can: Roll back to pre 3.66 drivers Disable AGP using DXDIAG Remove a CPU. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval) [This message has been edited by YuppieScum (edited 01 March 2000).]

Computer freezes when screen saver kicks in

Um, which screen-saver? All of them? Just the OpenGL ones? A third-party one?

! mark next to my keyboard in device manager

This happens because the OS sees the keyboard port as hardware, and so tries to fire up the driver. But, because there's no keyboard there, the driver fails to start - hence the "!". Basically the answer is "don't worry about it". You can flag the errant device "disabled" if you want, but as long as your actual keyboard works, then don't sweat it.

    ctmm32 and devcon32

Investigation shows that the file devcon32.dll is by Creative, and is probably part of the SB driver set. So... Disable/uninstall the SB devices in Device Manager. Down the box. Remove the card. Up the box. Delete the driver if it still is there.

    Imation SuperDisk Parallel Port Version??

The only Imation SuperDisk in the HCL (which is available on the W2K CD and on the MS web site) is the USB version. You'd best try the Imation web site for drivers... Oh, and you could have replied on the existing thread - it would have kept it current and not cluttered the forum...

! mark next to my keyboard in device manager

And the keyboard you have is..? I so wanted my 500th post to be something other than asking a poster for more information about their problem... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval) [This message has been edited by YuppieScum (edited 29 February 2000).]

    Nero 4.083 + Win 2k Pro. = Rebooting System

And what exactly do you do in Nero to cause the BSOD? Just start it, initiate a burn, or what? Also, what is the actual error message in the BSOD, and in what module does it occur?

    Nero 4.083 + Win 2k Pro. = Rebooting System

Most people (me included) are able to use Nero 4.0.8.3 with no trouble whatsoever under W2K. It would help if you posted details of your system configuration, together with ASPI revision, so we cann all help trouble-shoot your problems. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

    S3 Virge & Win2k Drivers?????!?!?!?!?!

The S3 GX/DX PCI is listed in the HCL, so native drivers will be present in W2K. However, the card is crap, and you'd be well advised to invest $100 or so in something better. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

    Diff. Win2000 2195 and "final release" ...

"free" does not mean "not final", "warez'd", "eval" - it means not "checked". "checked" is the debug version - loads of symbols, and support for debug monitor. "free" (iirc) means free of debug code. I will admit this is based on my recollection of a MS document I read about 5 years ago, so the details may be a bit off, but the basic info is spot on.

SBLive joystick port not working in W2K

Well, this worked for me... Uninstall the drivers. Shut down. Remove the card. Restart and log in. Shut down. Replace the card. Reboot and let the auto-detect find the card again.

    Superdisk Drive! Reply Please!

The only "SuperDisk" entries in the HCL are the following: Matsu****a-Kotobuki Electronics ATAPI SuperDisk Slim Version3 Matsu****a-Kotobuki Electronics ATAPI SuperDisk Version5 Matsu****a-Kotobuki Electronics ATAPI SuperDisk Version5 (LKM-F933-1) Matsu****a-Kotobuki Electronics SuperDisk Version5 (LKM-F933-1) Mitsubishi Electric Corp. Diff. Win2000 2195 and "final release" ...

If you run the "WinVer" utility - Start, Run, "winver" - and there's a line below the copyright message that says "120 day evaluation version" then you have the 120 day evaluation version.

SBLive joystick port not working in W2K

Most odd. The port on my SB Live works flawlessly using both an MS FF Pro, and a generic gamepad. How does the port show up in Device Manager? It should be "Game Port for Creative SB Live!" Have you, by any chance, installed the "NT4 LiveWare kludge-pack for W2K" that's been available here? That's been known to trash the game port...

How do you recover from "blindness."

The problem you describe sounds more like an issue with an overheated video card than the drivers. You have want to reduce any overclocking you've done, or invest in some additional cooling... Anyway, the Win32 API provides a function to perform remote shutdown and/or reboot. It's well documented in MSDN, and there are several free- and share-ware tools that make use of it. In addition, there is a tool at www.remotelyanywhere.com that allows remote system admin from a java-enabled browser.

    Yamaha 4416 Problems

Ah, now you tell me. OK, what exactly do you mean when you say the device is "not found"? Does it appear in the Device Manager? Have you assigned it a driver letter in "Disk Management"? Or is it that certain CDR s/w fails to recognise the drive? Oh, and what firmware revision does your 4416 have?

What you don't mention is memory size and video card (and driver)... Dual Processor vs Single Processor.

Sorry guys - I shouldn't post while drunk... You can only have SMP using 2 CPU's of the same core speed and multiplier, and no more than 1 "core stepping" difference... Check the Intel web site - it has extensive info about which CPU's can be used in an SMP environment...

SBLive joystick port not working in W2K

What sort of stick is it, and what drivers are you using? Dual Processor vs Single Processor.

Depends on the motherboard, and depends on what you do with your computer. Dual CPU is great if you do lots of things at the same time - any kind of Gfx or development work, burning, browsing, etc, or don't like to shut down apps while you play games A faster single CPU i sbetter if you only us one app at a time - ie. just games... Whether your mobo will take a faster CPU depends on your mobo...
