Fair point... I too enjoy sharing the wealth of my knowledge and the fruit of my extensive wisdom, but... Answering the exact same question more than 3 times in 3 weeks becomes very old very quickly... I have the extraordinary volume of knowledge that I do not because I ask other people every time I have a question, but because I find out for myself. Enquiry of others is but the last resort. This is the general problem with some "newbies" - the need to be spoon-fed answers. And this pisses me off. I'll happily help out where someone has tried and failed for themselves, but when I'm the first port of call instead of the last..? ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

What a bunch of arse. The Driver Development kit (which, along with the SDK, has accompanied every milestone rev of W2K) inherently supports SMP. In fact, this is the main reason that MS refused to ship 3DFX drivers on the W2K CD - because they didn't support SMP and could therefore break the OS. Ultimatly, this just goes to show how crap some companies are at understanding what supporting their products is all about...after all, the NT4 drivers run under SMP... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

It's Microsoft's declared intention to revise each product once a year. It's also their declared intention to have all their OSs based on a single code base. So every year, for the past several years, their "prefered OS" NT (aka W2K) gains more of the features that are effectively beta-tested in the consumer version (Win3.1/3.11/W4WG/9x). At some time in the future, Ms will only have one OS base. Until then, expect a yearly "update" for Joe Consumer to complain about. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Why not check the Norton web site - they have loads of info about their support plans... Just a thought...

Given that Norton actually support their AV product on W2K, have you asked them? Or searched their FAQ/knowledgebase? or searched this forum for that matter..? I use Norton, and I've used LiveUpdate, and it works fine... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Quake3 will only use TCP/IP. What do you mean by "games often suddenly quit"? IPX/SPX is crap. Spend the time on setting up TCP/IP properly. ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

If you read the HCL, you'll ind a list of video cards that are supported for "multi-monitor" use. There are no S3 cards in this list. Look for a hidden, system, read-only file in the root called BOOT.INI ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval) -
It's not only about the TNT cards, it's about their entire product line...graphics cards, sound cards, web cams, everything. True they get "reference drivers" for TNT and other video cards and "customise" them, but this isn't true of their audio cards and other products. And, speaking as a software developer of some 20 years standing...if you've been getting regular drops of: OS, SDK, DDK and reference drivers (which everybody has), and you're a competent and motivated development group, then you'll have your "customisations" ready to plug in to the "latest and greatest" every time. 4 days? It shouldn't take you more than 4 hours. Been there, done that. It's not hard if you're competent and motivated. Which do we think Creative aren't? And finally, while all this *****ing and moaning is quite carthartic - it will accomplish exactly squat. The class of people who actually care about this kind of thing (us) are so insignificant on a global sales scale, that Creative can afford to piss us off, because Joe Consumer will still see the shiny box and buy it. Oh, and finally, every "release" from NVIDIA has been beta - including 3.76. Now that Creative have released it, is it no longer beta?
-
To be fair - it's not as if they didn't know when the release date for W2K was going to be. MS even froze the code - and released the DDK and SDK - TWO MONTHS ago in order that IHVs could have drivers ready to go from day one. Any company that can't get it's sh1t together with that kind of notice deserves our contempt. Especially when they've not even mentioned drivers for products like their WebCams... ------------------ SuperMicro P6DBS (dual UW-SCSI) BIOS 2.2, 2*Celery 300a @ 450Mhz, 384MB PC100 RAM SCSI-A=4.3Gb+9Gb, SCSI-B=Tosh32x CD-ROM, Yamaha4416 CD-RW, Iomega ZIP100, IDE1=4.3Gb IBM EtherJet 10/100 NIC PCI + Nortel ADSL "modem" Matrox G400 DH 32Mb AGP + Quantum3D Voodoo2 SLI PCI (CL TNT1 AGP on a shelf) SoundBlaster Live PCI (not Value) Win2K build 2195 Retail (not 120-day eval)

Maeric - why not check out the MS HCL to see if MS actually support your hardware in W2K. jonny - use FC from the command line - it does a binary file compare.... Yes, different versions of a file can be the same size...

You should be able to get the model number from Intel's web site...

What do you mean by bus settings? If you're refering to FSB, that's controlled by the slocket card (MSI-6905 v1.1) that the Celeron sits in.

Dunno about the Pro - but the regular is fine. No, because dicking with those settings can compromise system stability. Only go with an IDE drive if there will only be one device on the channel and you have a spare IRQ... A decoder card will reduce CPU load, but wait a month to find out which will be supported...

Not a mention of Voodoo2 (or Voodoo1, Rush, etc) at all. Looks like us "legacy" users are gonna get shafted again...
