Just look at SharkyExtreme or AnandTech, those drivers are great. I tested MDK2 test on my PII 450/Geforce DDR at 1024x32bit, I got 39fps with 5.30's and 50fps on the 6.18's (vsync disabled); UT timedemo 1 gave me a nice 38 fps at 1024x32bit with the new ones. It's almost a free card upgrade

Maybe RamDiskNT will do the job They offer an evaluation version that works 100 times and defaults to 1.44MB floppy thereafter, enought time to see if it works. I had no time yet to try it out, could help me to decrease my time for a SETI workingunit. oh yeah, don't forget about this: Quote: Keep in mind that the software provided is without warranty of any kind (see the license.txt file included with the distribution). Applications is best for a workstation, background services is used in a server setup.

Go to the POWER OPTIONS in your control panel, it's under the first tab, called "Turn Off Hard Disks" with a pulldown menu for different timesettings.

ZoneAlarm works when you set the Internet security level to medium ... not perfect but it works, you'll mainly use your stealth status. I guess we'll see a patch/updated version early next week (don't forget SP1 is not even officially released yet).

This link should answer your question.

This ain't gonna help me. I have EZ CD 3.5 and it won't work with it in any way. So here I am, forced to make a decission: - Keep WMP7 (bloatware) and BUY EZ CD 4.0 for some $$ to keep WMP7 (bloatware). or - Keep EZ CD 3.5c and give WMP7 (bloatware) the finger. tough decission ..... NOT. WMP 6.4 does the job nice and unbloated, I only hope that WMP 7 is NOT included in SP1. I don't feel the urge to upgrade my EZ CD 3.5c since I only burn a CD here and there. Nonetheless, thx for the follow up and the new info. [This message has been edited by DocSilly (edited 28 July 2000).]

Some people are complaining about failing drives or media ... I have the internal SCSI version and it is really fast. They just work as a plain removable drive like my internal SCSI ZIP and I don't have the ORB software installed. Win2000 backup can use the ORB drive right away and that's all I want from this drive. I have no own experience in longterm reliability, I just got the drive 2 months ago for $170 ... time will tell.

I just found this page and it seems to agree with my findings, the included burner part of WDM7 does not like previously installed Adaptec burning software, sigh ... I hope that WDM7 is not an integral part of SP1 ...
-
Well, it's not a problem with ASPI 4.60 from Adaptec or PlexManager 2000 1.05 .... It looks like WMP7 does not like EZ CD 3.5 at all. Any recommodations on a compatible burning software for occasional burns ?

So, I'm back to the same point, reboots to 12 blue segments and stops. Here my steps: - format - clean install of Win2k - Windows updates, criticals first, IE5.5 and finally WMP7 - installed all drivers - installed my regular software (Office 2k, WinAmp and all the other programs) - no probs so far - installed Adaptec EZ CD 3.5 according to the walkthrough on Adaptecs homepage, rebooted, system hangs at bootscreen I also updated the ASPI to 4.60 but I doubt that this was the main reason ... The EZ CD 3.5 worked before without a problem (and so did PlexManager 2000) ... WDM7 adds burner capability ... can there be a connection ? I'll give it another shot tomorrow just to see if there's a connection between WDM7 and EZ CD 3.5 or PlexManager2000 -------------- PII 450 on P2B-LS, Annihilator Pro (Det 5.30), V2 SLI on NTCompatible drivers, SB Live (LiveWare3), all SCSI setup (Cheetah 9LP, Ultrastar 18XP, ZIP, Orb, UltraPlex32, PlexWriter 4/12), USR 56k modem, oneway cablemodem via 5 port switch

Well, I installed the new media player, rebooted and Win2k never came back up. It always stoped at the bootup screen after 11 of the blue segments. I tried Safe Mode, Safe Mode to prompt, Last Known good ... nothing booted it up. I'm reinstalling Win2k right now, maybe it'll work on a fresh install p.s. I never installed the beta. I hope that SP1 will fix the "stickey key" problem. The Kiss PC demo is kinda cool but it's not much fun to play with the stickey keys. That's reminds me .... where is SP1 ??

I have NAV2000 and IE5.5 running without any problems. Is your NAV2000 up to date ? Try to install NAV2000 first, update it and then install IE5.5 ...

You can find a quick guide a friend of mine wrote at AGN3D.

bogga666 That's a possibility, not every system likes to have all the important hardware on one IRQ ... some just can't handle it. The clean way to fix this is to make a new installation and during the first screens when it says "Hit F6 for SCSI RAID" etc hit F7 ... select "Standard PC" when promted from list and continue. The other method would be to go into Device Manager, select "Computer", change drivers and select "Standard PC" from list, reboot, all hardware will be re-initialized and hopefully settle on the right IRQ's ... I prefer the clean method ... but the other one is much faster ... up to you.
-
Cardinal AGP has same IRQ as PCI1 and PCI4 (though the second PCI could also be PCI 5 or 3, depending on mobo) ... just put the SB Live in a different PCI slot and you should do OK.

Zonealarm, 2.1.25 is the latest version.

Solaris is correct, NT4 can't read FAT32 and your best bet is to re-do the partitions and install Win98 on a FAT16 partition. There is a way to leave Win98 on FAT32 and still install NT4, lookie here ... but this way isn't the easiest Win98 has to be on the first partition to create a successfull dualboot with NT4 or Win2000.

Copyrights are very different between Music and Software, I read an extensive article about the German copyright issues in the C'T magazine a few weeks ago .... but I don't want to get too deep into this one (and it only covers german laws).

I like this point of view on piracy -> http://www.3ag.net/item_display.php/steal/1/ Above linked page says in much better words then I could find myself what I think about stealing software. The only software not "legal" on my system is mIRC, running for over 30 days without paying the shareware price ... though I'll pay for it when I keep using it. I run Win2k Pro on my PC ($170 shipped) and my CPP beta on my Laptop (couldn't yet afford second Win2k Pro copy). There is no excuse for using warezed software. *** slips into asbestos suit and waits for the flames *** Concerning the post that started this interesting discussion: I agree that someone running a dual boot 98/Win2k ADVANCED server as a homeuser can make you wonder a little bit ... Server/5 CAL (ca. $ 800) will handle most needs of a homeuser to run his Q3 server/FTP ... (prices are fullversions from TheBigStore) So, which "homeuser" would really run Win98 and then cough up ca. $ 3000 for adv. server/25 CAL to get: up to 8 CPU, up to 8 GB RAM, Cluster service and Network Load Balancing? So, here he is, this rare (rich) dude, the one who has a system that needs adv. server because he has an awesome Quad-CPU setup with 3 GB of RAM (for his homenetwork) ... I would estimate the hardware cost somewhere around 10K or up, maybe WAY up, and you won't find your Quad-CPU rig at your local small computershop ... this dude wouldn't care about paying per minute to get MS Techsupport. This rare dude might even post here to get his SB Live up and running on his Quad-CPU rig ... ;( The rest would only need Win2k SERVER ... I think a decent dual PIII CPU rig with 1 GB of RAM (and a nice SCSI/RAID system) is the upper limit (or beyond) for 99.7% of all users and Win2k SERVER would handle everything you need. Those unfamiliar with the difference between SERVER and ADVANCED SERVER can check http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/guide/server/features/default.asp . Well, I better shuddup, sigh, and all I wanted was to post the link ... but you know how it is .... ------------------ DocSilly homepage

I know from checking my memory usage before and after UT that this games eats up to 160MB memory .... get another 128MB stick, that'll fix your problems.

Did you try the leaked 5.13 or 5.14 Detonators (NT4 or Win2k)? You can find them either at www.reactorcritical.com or www.3dchipset.com . The 5.16's are only for Win9x ...

You have to "hack" your registry 8) Well, I hope you know the precautions you might wanna take before "messing" in your registry. Go to START|RUN and enter "regedit", go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\3Dfx Interactive\Voodoo2\Glide" and change the value for the refresh rate of the different resolutions to your preferred value. I prefer 85Hz for all resolutions up to 1024x768. Just remember to take values that your Voodoo2 cards support. Hope this helps ------------------ DocSilly homepage
