nonsense, I played the complete game as administrator ... it's an error that is only bugging on some systems ...
-
This is not the solution you seek ... I just right-click into the program group and select " sort by name " and everything is in order.
-
Here the follow up: Yes, my idea has proven correct. Win2000 defaults the audio CD player to the CD drive with the lowest driveletter. Now I can use my CD-R again as my default audio CD player (driveletter lower then CDROM).
-
OK, this works when you want to listen to an Audio CD from a specific drive ... but it doesn't seem to work like the "select default Audio CD drive" in the Win9x multimedia setting ... Because games seem to ignore whatever I select in the CD-Player, it seems that those options have not much to do with the "default audio cd drive" settings, more like an option to select a different volume setting/audio mixer for different CD drives ... The only way to get CD-audio in games was to connect the audio cable back to my first CD drive. hmmm, this gives me another idea ... maybe when I just change the driveletters of the drives ... ? I'll try that later today since I'm at work right now. I don't want to use my CDROM for audio CD's since it makes an audible hiss while accessing CDROM's (like installing stuff). I don't have this prob on my CD-R.

I have 384 MB (damn sweet) and when I play some UT it gives me a memory peak up to 160 MB over current RAM usage before playing UT

No, FAT32 -> NTFS is a oneway road ... but there are programs that'll allow you to read (free) or read/write (not free) on NTFS, available for DOS or Win9x.

I thought the beta sign up only stated that it is not supported under Win2000 ...

Which is fastest, NTFS or FAT32?
DocSilly replied to Turbo Grunkamoj's topic in Customization & Tweaking
My 2 machines (PC and Laptop) are both NTFS only. I have no performance issues here, everything is really fast. My right-click menus open instantly, no delays there. I tuned my system a little with TweakUI, I removed all file-entries for the NEW selection, disabled all the fancy fading effects and animations etc. It never was a question for me to use NTFS once I changed to Win2000 only on my system. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern -
There are different ways to change from "ACPI hadda hadda" to "Standard PC". - the dirty solution go to device manager, double click Computer, select properties from your "ACPI ...", drivers, update drivers, display a list ... , show all hardware .. , Standard computers, select Standard PC, next OK etc and reboot. You can also at this time disable the "power management" in your BIOS. Your PC will re-install all your hardware after reboot MS advises against doing so. I agree, a clean install might be easier, you get strange stuff like "Local Area Connection(2)". - the clean solution a clean new installation of Win2000, I know, it's a pain in the a** to do. You know what to prepare before doing a clean re-install, right ? You can disable the power management in your BIOS but you don't have to. Start the installation. Right at the beginning, where it says "Press F6 to install SCSI ... " etc and hit "F5" instead. It'll open a new screen where you can select the type of computer you want to use (standard, uni, multi, acpi etc) and select "Standard PC". You will see that Win2000 now uses the IRQ's more wisely. I had a many devices on IRQ9 while there were many other IRQ's not in use (ACPI, SCSI, LAN, USB, SCSI, Video). It worked but I didn't trust this setup so I re-installed the system like mentioned above. ------------------ DocSilly my puny homepage [This message has been edited by DocSilly (edited 07 April 2000).]

Here a quick review on different software firewalls. http://grc.com/su-firewalls.htm Here is a direct link to Zonealarm http://www.zonelabs.com/zonealarm.htm , the one that seems to be the reviewers favourite. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

You can use the NT Loader to boot all 3, incl. Linux. Here some links: - http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html - http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Multiboot-with-LILO.html - http://www.glideunderground.com/articles/multipleos/ - http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/osbooting/tripleb.html - http://www.systemlogic.net/articles/1999/september/multipleboot/ I like to use the NT Loader since WIn2k is the OS that'll stay on my system for a long time. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

Make sure that you have the latest patch. Don't forget to install the beta D3D dll, download it from http://unreal.epicgames.com/files/d3ddrv.dll . My machine locked up at the same place but the beta D3D dll fixed it (I have a GeForce). ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

I don't know if this fix will also work for your TNT2 ... it works great for my CL Anni Pro Check out this thread and see if it'll also work for you. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

I have a couple of links for such a tripple OS boot using the NT Loader (I used a similar setup on my machine) - http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Multiboot-with-LILO.html - http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html - http://www.dorsai.org/~dcl/publications/NTLDR_Hacking/index.html - http://www.glideunderground.com/articles/multipleos/ - http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/osbooting/tripleb.html - http://www.systemlogic.net/articles/1999/september/multipleboot/ I think this should be enough information on a working multi-OS setup. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

Here is what TheRegister wrote about it, this should make things clear: Quote: Posted 22/03/2000 5:19pm by John Lettice Office 2k SR-1 makes registration with MS compulsory Compulsory registration for Microsoft Office is a reality, following the arrival of Service Release 1 (SR-1) for Office 2000 yesterday. As The Registerreported earlier this year, SR-1 reincorporates the Registration Wizard that appeared during Office 2k beta, and if you haven't registered the product after 50 uses, it stops working. According to Microsoft, existing users installing SR-1 either via download or CD won't be affected by the Registration Wizard, but new purchasers, either retail or OEM, will have to use it. It works by the customer using the Internet, email, phone, fax or post to provide a 16 character installation ID and the country they're registering in, after which the Microsoft Registration Center sends them back an eight character confirmation code. Mindful of previous ghastly privacy screw-ups, Microsoft says the Wizard "is designed to protect customer privacy through a simple and unobtrusive anonymous product registration process." Quite. At the moment SR-1 is only available for individual users as an online update from microsoft.com. Corporate users can download an administrative update which can be used to apply SR-1 to client computers. Or you can order it on CD, with an estimated delivery time of six to eight weeks. The retail version is intended to start shipping in May.b There's apparently one more gotcha if you want to go ahead with the online update. Win98Central tells us that IE is necessary in order for the update to proceed. If you haven't got IE installed when you run the update.exe that starts the install process, it prompts you to go and get it. ® ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

Same happens to me, 895CXi, printing a lousy small Notepad file eats 100% CPU cycles for almost complete time of the printjob ... Anyone got any ideas ? ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

I need Dell's LiveWare but support.dell.com is down.. Anybod
DocSilly replied to a topic in Software
Why don't you just download it directly from one of Dell's many FTP's ? I found that the support document (linked to from NTCompatible) doesn't exist anymore. No sweat, I tried a different document number to find one of their FTP addresses. Try ftp://ftp1.us.dell.com/audio/EnLA09W.zip (no idea if the FTP link will work, if not, copy/paste it), use a download manager because you'll never know what happens during this 90MB download. Dell's Liveware works like a charm (using the instructions from here). ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern -
I'm happy that the DELL Liveware 3 for Win2000 works ... it was a 90MB download. Feels good to have 4-Speaker support back ... the old Liveware 3 fix never really worked with my setup.

OK, for those who still dare to install MouseWare 9 and get the "no-wheel-in-games" bug: Just download the wheelfix from Logitechs FTP. Here the direct link: ftp://ftp.logitech.com/pub/TechSupport/Mouse/Game_Whl.EXE I had the same prob, fine install but no wheel in games ... this file fixed it. I wouldn't know about it when Evil homer hadn't mentioned its existance, all I had to do was to find the file on their FTP server. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

Bwahaha, maybe it's true ... but this bug-infested piece of OS runs much much better then the Win95 first release. I'll stay with Win2000. It's only a few months to the Service Pack 1 which will fix most of the "defects" ...
