    Win2K and Linux

Try http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html to read on how to use the NT-Loader to boot into Linux, it worked without a problem for me. Install LILO on the Linux partitions superblock and use the NT-Loader to boot into that partition. Also make sure that Linux systemfiles are under the 1024th cylinder ( ~ 8GB), otherwise you would have to boot using a Linuxbootdisk. Don't forget that you'll need a Linux-SWAP partition (128MB is fine). Uhm, that's 'nuff Linux for this Win2000 forum ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

How do I get ICQ99b or ICQ2000a working in Win2k?

ICQ2000 has only a limited number of Alpha users, so after they reached the limit -> no more new users accepted. ICQ99 runs fine .... for your connection probs, are you behind a firewall ?
  4. Yes, banner adds are needed to pay for this forum and the great side. But can you please get a different one ? It changes the banner every 45 secs. When it changes the banner it removes my cursor from the message field and might put it into the subject line or somewhere else. This makes it somehow difficult to post a longer message. Every 45 seconds I have to re-write the last few words ... annoying to say the least. Maybe I'm the only one ... but this is driving me nutz. (Win2000 RC2, Netscape 4.71) It's still a great page and great forum for us Win2k users.

Those changing banner adds are driving me crazy

Thank you for the quick response. Happy Holidays
  6. ARGH, this is driving me nutz OK, I was lucky to get me a Creative Annihilator Pro today at my local CompUSA. Installation worked like a charm, no problems (running RC2). Next I tried to switch back to my normal 1600x1200 (on my 21" Viewsonic PT813) and tried to get refresh to 85Hz. The card can deliver, the monitor can handle but Win2000 RC2 won't let me do more than 75Hz. Well, next I looked at the Monitor settings in the display properties .... and what do I have to see ??? The Properties button for monitor greyed out! No chance to get Win2K to chance the monitor from default. I tried "find new hardware", both automatic and manual, the monitor is plug&pray ... but no chance to select anything monitor, not even under manual any monitor manufacturers available. I WANT MY 85HZ BACK (under 1600x1200)! Using the 3.5.3 that came on the driver CD (remember, I'm using RC2), I'm not sure if the newer drivers will work or fix my problem. can't change monitor after installing geforce

OK, that helped ..... now why isn't my D3D working ? DXDiag (the final DX7) shows D3D not avail but it passes the test ... Are the 3.53 the best drivers for RC2 ? I want this card to run, i'm tired of my G200. Sorry about my whining ... I just coughed up 300 buckaroos for this baby (and I know that RC2 is still beta OS ) [This message has been edited by DocSilly (edited 23 December 1999).]

    COM ports in Win2000 RC2

I had to upgrade my mobo BIOS to a newer version (ASUS P2B-LS) to get the COM ports to work correctly ... just an idea.

    Firewall

A firewall is hard to set up and it needs constant finetuning. It might be better to go with a commercial solution. One program that seems to be nice is BlackICE Defender from http://www.networkice.com/ . It silently monitors TCP and UDP ports to a level you choose, it'll detect intrusion attempts and record the IP from the Intruder. It's also fairly cheap at $39. But better check with them if it runs under Win2k. I might be looking into this one sometime soon. There are other firewall solutions, try to find one that can be easily updated on a regular base ... I think that managing a firewall is one of the hardest jobs for a network admin. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern [This message has been edited by DocSilly (edited 28 November 1999).]

How to make SBLive in win2k work!

Thx Phil. I did a clean install, changed my Computer from "advanced something something" to "standard", no PCI steering etc., followed the very good and detailed instructions and finally got it up and running under RC2 ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

    Voodoo2 in Win2k

There is a direct link on the NT Compatible mainpage. Check here ntgamepalace.3dfiles.com/3dfxfaq.htm , the instructions are provided in the readme in the ZIP file. You'll need the V2 NT4 drivers from 3dfx and the zip file with the hacked .INF ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

Liveware 3 and win2000 & it works! to

Still a no-go here. First difference comes after installing the new drivers (the OEM..... file), after reboot I get the SB Live but driver details say "no drivers installed" and sound hangs after starting .... Second is installation of the Liveware 3 itself, it starts, runs to 100% (first window) and nothing else. The above mentioned processes remain in memory (checked with taskmanager) but nothing else happens. Well, good thing is that it's easy to get back to the WDM drivers My computer setup can be found here http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/albern/computer.htm , the CPU slightly o/c at 504MHz. There are no problems due to the o/c situation, I don't think that the trouble. Oh yes, I have build 2128 (well, that's the best we CPP get) [This message has been edited by DocSilly (edited 07 November 1999).]

Liveware 3 and win2000 & it works! to

I have no time right now to check any further ... interesting alone the second problem with the SB driver that I mentioned in my first post. Well, I managed to bring back the WDM, I have to play EverCrack, poblems have to wait for weekend

Liveware 3 and win2000 & it works! to

Nope, single PII 450 slightly OC at 504 on ASUS P2B-LS (only a single CPU mobo). The problem has to be somewhere else ...

Liveware 3 and win2000 & it works! to

Need a little help .... Everything works fine until I try to install the Liveware 3 itself ... the downloaded version ... - So, I rename the setup.ex_ , window opens and goes to 100%, window closes, nothing else happens. - I check with the Task Manager what's going on ... SETUP.EXE process runs for a short while, closes, _ISDel.exe process starts and sits there idle forever, same with _INS5576._MP ... ARGH, what the **** is going on here ?? Is my download corrupted (I get the files when I unzip the Liveware3 zipfile) ?? I can imagine that the second file is a BMP ... what's it's full name ? And what's the complete name for the unknown EXE ? Any help is appreciated, please One more thing, after I follow instruction step 3 (drivers) I have no trouble in my device manager but when I click on the SB Live properties it shows No Drivers Installed but shoes the files when I check the Driver details ... Well, back to the SB Live WDM for now [This message has been edited by DocSilly (edited 04 November 1999).]

    Games and the voodoo 2

I don't know about FIFA 2000 ... does it use D3D or also Glide etc ? If it only runs in D3D you're out of luck, no D3D support for V2. Try Quake 2 or Half Life, they run with the miniGL and Glide to see if your V2 is working corrctly.

    SBLive Liveware 3.0

No go here .... tried the things posted by Takashi Kimura ... didn't work. Also the " setup.exe " in "english\setup\" is after unzipping still only a " setup.ex_ " ... strange So another no go from Creative (and I had hopes for that one ... I miss my 4 speaker support) and another wait for Liveware 4 ... ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern

Help! Ultra/Wide SCSI and SCSI-2 Problems!

It should work. Just make sure that you use an active terminator at the end of the UW cable (in case it's your only HDD) since LVD drives offer no termination onboard. There should be a jumper to choose betwenn LVD and single ended, select single ended. Don't forget to select a proper ID (ID 0 by tradition for boot HDD) and you should be ready to go. These are general tips since I don't know your complete SCSI setup. ------------------ DocSilly members.bigfoot.com/~albern
