    Office2k SR1, beware!

it may be registered, but you have to do it everytime you install it, the software won't know if you've registered it or not if you had just done a clean install since the last time you registered it. i believe you can just reinstall office 2k over the copy you have now, to save all your settings, then register it after setup, then apply the patch again.

    Office2k SR1, beware!

is your copy of office 2000 registered? you have to register it before you install the sr1 patch, the sr1 has a piracy protetion thing, that if its not registered it will not work. first i installed the patch, and had this problem, so i uninstalled office 2000, then reinstalled it, then registered it, then applied the patch, it worked fine. i have the o2k SB edition.

    Be honest now!!!

well i don't own a copy of win2k, and its not pirated, its a 120 day trial version which i got at a trade show in january.

How to install Win98 under Win2K?

to bypass scandisk, you use setup /is /iq
  6. i've been a win2k addict since last december (1998) when i got my first beta of win2k (err NT 5 beta 2 as it was called) i didn't like the fact that a few things were outdated, like ie, and the directx was poor. i hated the fact that i had to keep using win98 for those 2 reasons. but now that win2k is final, i say thank god for an os that does everything i want, and runs my programs well, and some even better than they run on win98.

I agree that the link posted does reference Win2k support, but going through the "Shop Symantec" link, there is nothing that shows that. It is buried under all the crap. Also, if you follow the posted link above and then click on "Purchase from Shop Symantec", it DOES NOT reference Win2k on that page. So, no i'm not dumb, I just didn't find THAT specific page with THAT specific wording! As for McAfee....well unless it says Win2k, I don't install it (when it comes to AV, etc. type software). I have had way to many problems and don't want to "hack" installs or setups. It will just cause more problems in the future. Cut/Pastre from their site: Norton AntiVirus 2000 6.0 for Windows 95/98/NT Norton AntiVirus from Symantec is the #1 anti-virus software in the world. Purchase Norton AntiVirus 2000 6.0 for downloadable for Win 95/98 or Win NT or for .95 packaged for Win 95/98/NT. Archaon....when Win95 came out, yeah everyone knew that support would take a while. It was a totally different OS from Win 3.1. Think about it...plug and play, true dialup...a completely different core. Yeah, Win2k and Win98 are different but the under lying core is similar (if some win9X and NT apps all work on top of the OS, it can't be that different). Also, things in the internet have changed greatly since then (being more internet games, etc.). You just can't compare Win 3.1/Win95 to Win98/Win2k. And just cause YOUR apps/games work just fine doesn't mean everyone elses will. Hardware combinations are too numerous to even count. I know about 5 people that tried Win2k, had apps/game problems, tried doing the "hack" thing and they weren't successful. Why should I have to "hack" anything anyways. As for Arin....you are just so intelligent! If you don't have anything good to say regarding this discussion, then don't. -Q Quantus what the hell do you thing windows 2000 is? its Windows NT, 5.0 its not like its a totaly different type of os. its Windows NT plain and simple. also id rather hack a game to work, than run a hacked operating system like win9x. win2k rules.

(try and find an AV application for win2k!). well symantec av works fine and well in win2k. Mcafee Virusscan 4.03 for win NT works fine under win2k. mcafee is also developing (or actually finished, and to be released) virusscan 4.5 for win95/98/ME/NT4/Win2000. sorry if you can't find what you are looking for, but do some checking before you post untrue posts to a message board. either you are not doing research before you upgrade to win2k, then have problems, or you are posting just to get some attention (which is sad if this is the case) 97% of my apps work out of the box. 1.5% don't work at all and 1.5% need to be hacked (patched via setwin95.cmd) apps that work: Microsoft Office 2000 premium Microsoft Works 2000 (lowest version) Microsoft Encarta 98 Encyclopedia Canon Creative 3 printer software. Creative labs soundblaster 16 Software MGI Photosuite SE Inuit Quicktax 1999 Ms monster truck madness 1/2 ms midtown maddness Quake (winquake) /2/3 Unreal Tournament Demo Half-life Half-life opposing force demo Mcafee virusscan 4.5 (Rc) Real Player 7 (newest released yesterday) icq 2000 alpha (latest from feb) ms intellipoint 3.1a winzip 8 beta 2 quicktime 4.1 apps that work after setwin95 ms baseball 3d/2000 hasbro jumble apps that don't work at all Hasbro scrabble (version 1) hasbro boggle (of course the stuff that doesn't work at all arent even mine, so i don't care about them =)) so if you take the pros and the cons of the os, and work out the odds, what would you choose? win2k is my obvious choice.

Switching back to good ol' win98

I have run the beta 2 build (what ever that one was, can't remember) and beta 3 rc1 (build 2000) and all have been stable, my system has always worked top notch, ok acpi/apm didn't work for me in beta 2 so i had no powermanagnet what so ever, but still at least it works now.

who's wasting time with win2k, not me, my system works perfrect under win2k, i havn't rebooted my system in 3 weeks, of a 5 week install.

Where has my memory gone ???

I belive its normal, after a clean install on my machine, my mem usage was almost 64mb out of 96mb.

Anyone break the 24hr uptime barrier yet?

I've been up for about 3 days right now, before then, i was up for about a week before. id love to try to break 1 week, but with installations and driver updates that need a reboot, its kind of hard to do at times. but performance wise i probably could stay up for a month, maybe a year =)

Switching back to good ol' win98

I think you guys suck, my computer works great under win2k, it works better than under win98. My pentium 2/300mhz 96mb ram, works better under win2k than under win98. i havn't had one os crash or blue screen since i installed win2k 4 weeks ago, 4 weeks is the longest i've ever had an operating system on my computer. under win95/win98 my computer would become so unstable after about a week, and id have to reformat and reinstall it. win2k has been the stablest operating system i've seen microsoft release, i've used it since beta 2 since november (when i recieved the cd from ms, i believe it was released in august 98?) and beta 3 rc1 in april, in which i was running them for a few months each build, its been stable for me since then, never had any problems, (other than the normal beta bugs) i have tons of programs running when i startup, at startup i must use about 120mb ram and its so freeken stable i just can't believe it. under win98 at startup i would have edited it so that not all my programs would startup to keep more memory free, but still it would get unstable, and then have to reboot every few hours. under win2k, my computer has been up for about 38 hours now, after being in standby during today, and hibernation last night, and still running as good as it did just after a reboot. games, well they run 100 times faster than on win98 on my machine. win98 can't compare to the way win2k runs. p.s. i lost my win98 cd and second edition updates cd. thank god, i think i used them as frizbies last night <vbg> My specs so you see how to build a real system that works <vbg> Asus P2L97 (66mhz) Intel Pentium 2 300mhz 96 MB 66mhz SD Ram ATI Xpert 98 8mg AGP Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 PNP/ISA US Robotics V.90 56k Winmodem ISA Intel 21041 PCI ethernet (For cable access) Canon BJC-4300 Series printer. Major software installed MS Office 2000 Major games Quake 3 latest beta patches. Unreal Tournament all these work the way its supposed to on my computer. Memory and Win2k

96 works ok here, but i intend to upgrade someday. if you have 128mb ram, point is don't worry about it until you need it. i've noticed win2k can be better on memmory managment than win9x (not better on usage, it uses allot more) but it does seem more efficiant than on win98, and im running allot more programs at startup than i did on win98.

    Fifa 2000 patch is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't like ea that much either, i've always had problems with there games, i borrowed a friends cd to try a game, fifa soccer 98 or something like that, i couldn't even play it, it kept freezing on my ati xpert 98 card. i've never had problems with any other games, just that one game, even unreal tournament runs (fine <g> ) with this card, and its a pretty heavy game
