The Fasttrak66 does not because it is seen as a SCSI card. I know this since I have one. Ed

Does the win2k-drivers from 3dfx suck or is it just win2k?
EM replied to Turbo Grunkamoj's topic in Games
Post them here so we can all see. Please. Ed -
Nothing to load. I just plugged it in and it was found by Win2k as a Gravis Gamepad Pro. It comes up in Control Panel under Game controllers as a USB Human Interface Device. Ed

I have the USB version of the Gravis Gamepad Pro and it works just fine with all ten buttons working. Ed

Having used both a Voodoo3 2000AGP and a Diamond Viper 770 with the retail version of Win2k, I currently use the Voodoo3. My reasons are better drivers since the TNT2 drivers require me to disable my dnet client before running any games using D3D. Granted the Voodoo3 drivers don't support SMP yet but I could only get about 4 frames better in Quake3 with the SMP enabled TNT2 Drivers. Ed

According to the manula of my ABIT BP6 you can use two different clock speed of CPUs on it. It is a socket 370 dual Celeron board. I have not tried to use different cpus in it. I guess I could since I have two of them running with two 366@550 in one and two 466@560 in the other. Very much a pain in the neck to try it though. Ed

Monopoly that it may be, Microsoft has done much good for personal computing. I would agree with LM, standards are a must for the hardware side. However, running games and other apps on differing OS's may be nearly impossible. I would have to say that most software developers are too cheap (chicken) to support any other OS than the most popular (ie: Microsoft). Take OS/2 for example. I used it for over 2 years during the reign of Windows 3.0/3.1. It ran all my DOS programs and all my Windows apps and didn't crash nearly as much as Windows on top of DOS. Yet software developers insist on only writing for what they have decided is the "best" OS. It is all in marketing, just like the Beta vs. VHS thing a number of years ago. Other OS's may be technically better but Microsoft has better marketing people. Just my 2 cents. Ed

Check out www.distributed.net for all the information you need. In short, it is a downloaded client that you set up and run in the background to attempt to find a key that will unlock a message that is encrypted with a 64bit encryption. If you have not downloaded and setup the program to run than it is not running on your machine. Ed

Mine has been up for over two weeks. Last reboot was by choice not necessity. Ed

If they work under 95/98 and not under 2k then I don't know what to say. I run AOE2 under 2k with no trouble. Ed

Originals or burned copies? Makes a difference. Ed

From the Games Compatibility Page, N for Need for Speed: Need for Speed 4 (Electronic Arts) Yes W2000 06/99 1. Run Setup.exe 2. When you get the error message "This game only runs on Windows 95 or 98" copy the entire directory "_ISTMP1.DIR" (or similar) which is located in x:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp\ to a temporary location (eg. c:\nfshsdir). Maintain directory structure when copying. 3. Click OK to quit the error message. 4. In the nfshsdir directory rename _INS5576._MP to _INS5576.EXE 5. Copy ImageCFG.exe and SetWin95.cmd from the NT 4.0/NT5b2/Win2000b3RC1 CD to the nfshsdir directory. 6. Go to a command prompt, CD to the temporary directory. Type SetWin95 _INS5576.EXE <ENTER>. 7. Create a file called "_INS0432.INI" and put the following line in it: " -fY:\SETUP.INS -z1 -cx -xC:\nfshsdir -x1"Y:\" -q10009" Make sure you substitute Y:\ for your CD-ROM drive and C:\nfshsdir for the temporary directory you chose in step 2. 8. Run _INS5576.EXE from the nfshsdir directory. 9. Ignore the error message "Can not run Unicode version of ATL.DLL on Windows 95. Please install the correct version. 10. Run NFS Auto-Patch (under Start Menu) to update to latest version to resolve "Invalid Win32 Application" error message. 11. Congratulations, you have just installed Need for Speed 4 in Windows 2000. You may need to apply a NO-CD check patch to eliminate CD-check depending on your system. Try checking around on this site (ie: search) before posting questions to see if the question has already been asked and answered. It saves us all a lot of headaches. Ed

An observation: Two hypothetical questions. 1. What TNT2 board supports SMP in Quake 3? Search for TNT2 SMP Quake3 resulting in 373 seperate posts. 2. Any suggestions for installing Win2k with a Promise Fasttrak 66 IDE raid controller? Search for Promise Fasttrak resulting in 13 seperate posts. As this small example shows, the search feature is both useful and useless. Very useful for some questions but not very useful for others. I for one would not search through 373 posts to try and find my answer to Question 1 but I would look at 13 posts to try and find the answer to the second question. Some suggestions for the search feature. 1. the ability to eliminate some posts (eg: Posts including the phrase NT so as not to have to read about SMP and Quake 3 in NT) 2. Don't have signatures included in the search. For example, many sigs include the hardware that the poster has in their machine. Their post may have been about Liveware but because they put in their sig that they have a TNT2 I have to search through all those posts to try and find my answer about quake3 and SMP with tnt2. Ed

I didn't find USNF97 in the compatible games for Win2k so maybe you should submit it as not working under Win2k. I couldn't even get this game to work under NT even though someone else was and submitted that it was compatible win NT. Ed

Tweaking is the best. What better reason to have SMP and Win2k? Thursday will be hilarious. The pile of questions will be overwhelming as the teeny weeny search button is ignored by the ignorant expecting immediate answers to their long winded questions that have been so oft answered. Ed

Agreed, once SMP always SMP. You just can't beat the price/performance ratio of a BP6 and a couple of overclocked Celerons. Ed

Microsoft Win2k Giveaway (did anyone else win a copy?)
EM replied to jabbathewocket's topic in Hardware
I won in the second round and received it today. Ed -
Make sure that you have the IP addresses correct on both machines. (Basic network troubleshooting). Correct protocols, machine names, domain names etc. Win2k works great on my two machine network. The easist way that I set mine up was to set up my internet connection on the one machine and then enable internet connection sharing on that machine. The system set up the IP addresses for me. Also make sure that the drives on the appropriate machines are set to shared if you want to access files. Same for printers etc. Ed

After searching through what seems like thousands of messages looking for the answer to the subject question I have come to the conclusion that there may not be an answer. My hardware list is as follows. Abit BP6 Dual 466 128Meg RAM Promise Fasttrak66 IDE Raid SBLive Value Linksys II NIC Tekram DC-390F SCSI Card Viper V770 Voodoo2 Which TNT driver 3.53,3.69 etc supports Direct 3D, OpenGL AND SMP (for Quake3)? I have tried numerous different drivers and all have something or another that doesn't work. My Voodoo3 in my other computer (same setup except for the Video Card) works fine except for the SMP thing. I hope this is enough info to get an answer. Thanks. Ed

Is it possible to convert the Fat32 partition to NTFS and then use disk administrator to do the dynamic disk thing? Ed

http://www.promise.com/techsupport/Notes/windows_2000_rc2_installation_FT66.htm Very specific details on installing this controller under Win2k. I have it up and running on my system with 2 IBM 15g drives striped as one. Try doing a search for Fasttrak and Promise and read the thread about this controller. Ed

JimmyK, I was only posting to let them know that the demo does work with the Voodoo3. I have had nothing but trouble with my Viper 770 sith my dual processor setup and so have pulled it in favor of a Voodoo3 for now. TNT2 drivers have too many problems for me to deal with for now (D3D lockups etc). Ed

Anyone have a functioning controller (USB) in Windows 2000?
EM replied to MarksmanX's topic in Hardware
The Gravis Gamepad Pro USB is exactly like the Gamepad Pro. 10 buttons. Almost exactly like my sons Nintendo controller. Works great for games like NBA Live2000 that don't take proportional control like flight sims and driving games. It is either all left or no left for instance, no "just a little left". Ed
