    Hauppauge WinTV-USB

thanks for the replies people. I know about the broken drivers thing. The point I was making is that hauppauge and Nvidia blame each other and neither has done anything about it. Thus I referenced the sasem drivers that are "good" (scanline interpolation) and have patches for the overlay problem and other busmaster chipset problems. In win98 my PC is severly unstable with the TV app running. I have yet to find the WDM drivers. Still at it! My own feelings about hauppauge is a 5/10 for support. Thanks for the help. Hope I've not put of Bursar from buying his USB tuner!

    Hauppauge WinTV-USB

I'm not sure about the USB tuners as USB has a low bandwidth, and i've heard the image quality suffers due to this. I have a PCI wintv (model 406) and am too in the UK. This card is crap (but bearable). So is the software. There is a number of things that really annoy me. The first is hardware overlay refuses to work ever version of windows with my current hardware, yet it works in linux and with DVD software in windows 9x, NT4 and w2k so I know its not the video card. No2. When you start up the tuner it "bump starts" about 4-5 times, rather like changing the channel on your TV with the volume full up. You know that thud noise. No3. To get Nicam stereo working each channel has to be fine tuned 4% to either side of the zero point. No4. All Tv tuners suffer from an effect due to the way normal Tv's differ from PC monitors. Normal Tv's draw odd then even lines in 2 passes. On a PC both are drawn at the same time, and also the PC monitor is far faster that a TV. The end result is when credits scroll, or there is fast movement on the screen it breaks up into parallel horizontal lines. This is not seen on normal tv's. I was going to show u a screen shot but the snapshot program is smart enough to cover this up by only taking 1 field (odd or even) then interpolating the missing lines (blurring). Its a pity they don't do this for the actual picture. Other cards do, like this one apparently: http://www.sasem.com/english/index.html which even has patches for both my TNT and my via motherboard chipset. It also appears to have won some prizes. no 5 in win98 if I move the tv box the PC crashes, and if I don't it does it after about 10 mins anyway. Best advice is have an intel chipset, a decent video card, fastish processor, and stable PC then give the USB TV a go, or get a PCI one. They are not a replacement for a real TV, but will do the job. I really only use mine for a stereo feed to a dolby pro-logic amp. ------------------ System Spec: FIC VA-503+ 1.1b bios JE438 CPU Current Limiter Disabled AMD K6-2 550 (300 when I talk to FIC tech support) 128Mb SSi PC100 STB Velocity 4400 16Mb PAL TV-Out Hauppauge Wintv Realtek 8029 LAN Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) 56.6K (AkA 44k) ISA Modem Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb LS120 and com and lpt i/o conflict error during bios startup. best program to backup Hard Drive (for w2k)?

If you dual boot then use winzip, and also set compression to fast. I usually just do the winnt, system32, folders. Any app errors can be recontructed by doing a re-install later.

"This device cannot start" error on com ports

Press Delete during boot to enter bios setup and change the serial 1 port address until it shows up as com4, or reserve irq 4 to prevent the PNP modem from using it, and if its any good it'll pick another IRQ. If it doesn't you have to change the jumpers/switches to manually change the port.

Goto hardware properties/my computer and update the driver, pick from known hardware the "standard PC" this will disable ACPI which is basically what messes up most com ports. Hibernation will stop working though.

Its not really the fact that games crash. Were used to that. Its the fact that when you run Dxdiag there is a "disbled" button/function. That seams to really get to people. I mean, I ain't ever seen it enabled on my TNT, yet when I do (one day) I don't envisage a major speed boost of 10000000% or something. Well thats seams to be the importance of AGP these days. If AGP was so good why do some newer cards have 64MB memory (except voodoos cause half/quarter is wasted in antiquaited chips, can't they just bang together a big chip with them inside the casing, who would know? Nvidia do it.). 64MB cards was never intented. Was it? theres no other way ------------------ System Spec: FIC VA-503+ 1.1b bios JE438 CPU Current Limiter Disabled AMD K6-2 550 (300 when I talk to FIC tech support) 128Mb SSi PC100 STB Velocity 4400 16Mb PAL TV-Out Hauppauge Wintv Realtek 8029 LAN Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) 56.6K (AkA 44k) ISA Modem Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb LS120 and com and lpt i/o conflict error during bios startup. Major Win2k problems! !!EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!

hey! who are these people copying my posts From now on I'm putting a copyright symbol in my signiture. For now © will do until I can figure out the UBB, or Html code. Intel chipsets are just as Kack as other manufactures. Its just that due to the power and monopoly the bugs have their workarounds hardwired into microsoft OS's. It ain't "wintel" for no reason. Just look at the Bugfix options that linux make availabe for both CPU and Chipsets for the kernel compililation. Some nasty bugs there. Look at what I squeeze into my via mobo, and most of it works most of the time: ------------------ System Spec: FIC VA-503+ 1.1b bios JE438 CPU Current Limiter Disabled AMD K6-2 550 (300 when I talk to FIC tech support) 128Mb SSi PC100 STB Velocity 4400 16Mb PAL TV-Out Hauppauge Wintv Realtek 8029 LAN Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) 56.6K (AkA 44k) ISA Modem Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb LS120 and com and lpt i/o conflict error during bios startup. Major Win2k problems! !!EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!

Lots of options: Does the convertor introduce timing errors in any way what so ever? >> underclock cpu to something silly and see. PC133 memory is only a rough boundary as far as some specifications can go (it ait't IEEE like is it!) So reduce to the system bus speed to check whether the memory is on the wrong side of the Mobos favoured dram latency. I can't say this enough. Always install NT4 with udma disabled or the HD will be corrupt on the first boot. For win2k it also happens but only when the controller is unknown (new chipset) or the bios mistakes udma 33 for 66 (which award bios often suffer from). You have the latest bios. Is is for the correct revision and Mobo type there are 2, the standard 6199 and the 6199VA. Which do you have?, and is the right bios. Its an easy mistake the manufacturer, or you can make. Does the latest bios revision add routines solely designed to prevent confilcts/errors on specific hardware combinations that you do not have? Does this introduce a negative imapact to you system? Thus, so you need the latest bios? Do you have the latest via patches? www.viatech.com/drivers no via board works without them (and often afterwards as well!) Disable unnecessary devices until the base system is stable. Thus disable/remove Lan and Sound. Don't install apps like winamp. Beos is cool USB with MS OS's is and always will be a no no situation. Use a PS2/serial mouse keyboard for now until the system is stable/or you sell it. ACPI is crap and always will be (which is why I have a serial I/O card installed) so install win2k in standard PC mode for ultra safety. Thats one bug fix MS doesn't need a patch for. I wrote lots more but win2k crashed (third time today) due to the fast fat system driver, can't say why. disable Bios speed enhancements, and set "reset configuration" to enabled. to refresh the ESCD and pnp configuration tables. This includes AGP, UDMA, Caches, Shadowing, agp aperture to min (disables agp system enhancements), set timing options to slow. But leave cpu caches as we want the PC to boot sometinme this side of the millenium. More may come.

Are you stupid or what? If the system is unstable running 20 winamps is the most non-sensical, non-logical lame-ass idea I have ever heard off. It comes right next to "the cup holder had broken". You are taking the piss aren't you? Sorry about that but it has be said. Logical system trobleshooting goes like this. remove unecessary devices. IE sound card. Net card turn off bios enhancements: AGP 2x, UDMA, bios shadowing or anything that may serve to "enhance system performance" load up in safe mode. read the event log to see if/what's happening Get the system running with minimal spec. Install drivers or check to see whether existing drivers have enabled the functionality that you are tring to enable. Ie bus master drivers for UDMA 33/66 (66 is often a problem area, and in winnt udma must be disabled until the drivers have been installed manually after installing the OS. If not the drive will be corrupt in the first boot). This is most likely your problem area. After stability is established add one device at a time to retain some degree of control, and fallback if something nasty happens.

    Ensoniq ES1371 problems

Yup. Creative's site has new audioPCI win2k drivers but they seem to be for "ct" type chips. A bit strange but I tried them anyway. The only problem was that the tvtuner slider was removed. Other than that they were perfect. Check it out here http://support.soundblaster.com/files/download.asp?OS=Win2k&prod=sb_ensq PS have you noticed how the number of posts don't change, We're being done. Ensoniq ES1371 problems

The reason for the web pages was to identify the brand name of the Sound card that you have. As Win2000 is installing the drivers as defined by the PCI cards vendor , subvendor, device, and subsystem IDs. So its a bit hard for it to install the wrong drivers. To find out why the ES1370 driver is being installed is due to the make of the card. As the ES1371, es1370, and es1373 are all similar, its the connections and additional features on the cards that causes the problems. I know that I have the PCI64v, and from that getting the correct drivers isn't a problem. However, the PCI64D and PCI128 both come in es1370 and es1373 varieties. It is not enough to know that the chip is a es1371, as the mixer and I/O lines can vary even with the same chip. All I can say is goto sys proerties/update drivers and select either SB AudioPCI, or select PCI64/128. Ignore es1371,1373 WDW, as I assume you've tried them. And find the correct name of the card.

    I need this file!!!!!!!!

If I could afford it I'd easily fork out for win2k, so I just opted for the £35 corporate review program instead, until someone "donated" a full boxed set. Sweet.

Keeps the boards busy though DX8 works perfectly for me, not that is makes much difference. Although DVD playback has improved slightly.

    Ensoniq ES1371 problems

Went back to see if my mic actually still works in win2k (not used it in years; sorry only used it once!). What type of mic is it? If its a real mic (not a PC one) then the plug should have 2 sections, not like stereo headphone sockets that have three. If it is a normal mic then, I have found that it only works if you don't fully insert it in to the socket. This is because the PC mics usally require a power source (electret condenser types) and thus the socket as three connections. So putting in a 2 way plug will short circuit 2 of the connections. You will need to get an adapter for "stereo break out" or "stereo to two mono(L+R)" and only use one of the lines. If its a Bog standard PC mic (with 3 connections on the plug) then set microphone boost to on, and set the recording and playback values to non-zero. Also make sure the microphone is set a the active recoring source, or else use "Sum". Are you sure the Card has a es1371? make sure it does by looking at the chip. It could easily be a es1370/es1373.

300MHz Min for software DVD is bull****

Yes it must be true. DMA is enabled, overlay works and PowerDVD is so jerky its unbelieveable, but the sound is fine. WinDVD isn't much better either. Decided to install win98 on a small 500Mb partition to see how it goes. It is absolutly fluid motion. Perfect. Until the CPU overheats after exactly 31mins on "The Matrix". Not to mention the fact that win98 needs at least 4 attempts to recognise the DVD. 550Mhz and win2k is permanently at 100% CPU utilisation, so what is it at 300? Help!-
