What version of PM? Some versions don't do the FAT32x filesystem so are limited to certain sizes. Try using the partition list program (I can't remember its name) that comes with PM to check the boundaries of the partitions if the partition reaches both ends of the drive then maybe you have selected a fat32 partition with massive clusters, and that's stole your space? Run scandisk in case your freespace is being miscalculated, I see that often too.

Try moving that card to a different slot, as if its fighting a geforce, it'll probably never get an irq. Also if your wintv is taking up 2 irq's then you have another problem. After moving the card go into the bios in the PCI section set "Reset configuration Data" to enabled, and this will rebuild/clean the PCI device list.

Sorry but I only read the first page. When a dos like OS had been installed before NT the NT setup copies (for limited legacy support) the autoexec and config.sys dos enviroment settings like paths etc to autoexec.nt and config.nt is this what all the confusion is about? (I know this cause I have often had to use it for using 16 bit apps in NT4), and I'm not some Hyper intelligent Computer person, I last used it 2 days ago to get a copy of ADA 95 (a computer language) IDE up and running in win2K, and I can't get a specific graphics library to run...

your lucky you skipped NT4! I had massive problems with a modem called PCI56RVP I had to search for UK specific drivers, the others from the TINY CD just didn't work. Eventually I found them and they had been called fcc.zip on their ftp site. Not very Uk is it? Try the NT4 ones them here http://www.euankirkhope.freeserve.co.uk/oldstuff/modem.htm or look for win2k drivers on http://www.e-tech.com.tw/ I don't use the modem any more becuase it was a "WINMODEM" and it was crap, and I ran out of PCI slots!

Did your keyboard work before? If it did then unplug all your cards (except video), harddrives, pull out all the cables (except the power and important ones) if you've plugged something in wrong then it may have done somthing nasty to the power being supplied to the keyboard superi/o chip etc, often it returns to normal afterwards. Taking into consideration the cheapness and lack of good keyboard chips (inside the keyboard) you may have fried it either by a wrong connection, or ESD (static). I know this cause i've done it many times. Out of 4 keyboards I have spare, only one works in my PC now. Yet the others all work in other computers, and worked in mine previously. If you get no lights comming on the keyboard then it may well be dead! if there are lights yet no action, a wire may be broke. Check the cable and the sockets soldering for a dry joint. This is why we don't unplug devices with the power on!

Is it normal that "CPU usage" jumps to 100% when p
euankirkhope replied to Andy_25's topic in Hardware
yeah i thought that there was some sort of problem with win2k controling your parallel port. I quickly then discovered that NT doesn't use an interupt in the first place (mostly, for that good stability). The reason it takes 100% is due to the spool priorty setting, and the hardware protocol your printer uses to print. To fix it change the priorty setting using either the service manager or download the tweakui thing above. Incidently I don't have a problem with slow downs or anything when printing, and my PC also hits 100%. I know a fair bit about how printers print, I'm not really suprised as thers almost an infinte ammount of ways of sending the data (about 5) and the last thing NT wants to see is a tiny parallel port hanging the system... unfortunatly most printers use the most inefficient protocols for compatibilty. Yes it does that, but settles down after a while of rearranging, you'll have lost some power management stuff as well (hibernate). What version of nvidia drivers are you using? Remember beta drivers are BETA drivers. Do you have the latest bios for you Mobo, AGP miniport, etc. Try disabling IRQ routing in the computer section (as before). This will mess things up again. If this doesn't work, put ACPI back on, and try ALL the Nvidia drivers starting from 3.66, 3.78 etc. source: www.reactorcritical.com Also I had a problem where only 3.66 works on my PC, where when playing Q3 the only part of the screen that moved was a box round the 2D icons at the bottom of the screen. I fixed this by throwing in the 3.81 nvoglnt.dll to the system32 folder it worked wonders Do a clean up by deleting all nv*.* and oem*.* files within the /winnt/ folder, Then reisnstall the drivers. The fact that your getting a BSOD means that somethings not very happy PS The AGP and PCI irqs can't be handpicked, just smartly shifted about, Its good to have ACPI and PCIIRqRouting enabled, but it doen't always work. If the uppermost PCI slot is left empty, the AGP card should be left on its own (with ACPI off). [This message has been edited by euankirkhope (edited 21 March 2000).]

euankirkhope replied to Andy_25's topic in Hardware
Try this: goto device manager, find your parallel port It should be ECP/EPP preferably enter its properties and select "try not to use an interupt" or "don't use an interupt" that way your printer won't interput the PC for every data transfer (as long the printer/PC is ECP DMA enabled or EPP aware(?)) -
goto device manager/computer upgrade its driver (which is set to Advanced config...) to standard PC However with acpi its perfectly normal for all your irqs to be on the one irq, its only when a device needs an irq it get given one (then its taken back after). That way there less a shortage of interupts! Also if you have a spare PCI slot make sure the empty one is PCI#1 (next to the agp slot). As they physically share an irq, by means of a copper track. Also, Also! ACPI bios' seam to disreagard irq 5 for some unknown (to me) reason. It's now apparently reserved.

Primary is moving the picture pixel by pixel though the guts of the CPU into the main screen buffer or something. Overlay is where the data is shifted over the PCI bus and processed by the video card, more efficient and better, yet often doen't work. DIB draw is often used for compatibiltity, can't really remember how it works, something like using windows graphics libraries, and functions to draw the image..

Sorry to have misled you there or something, but with my PC I can't see the other computers either, yet the internet connection sharing works! So I thought that it may lead to you finding the info you required.

Don't worry about when these trivial arguments get complicated bit get missed, what he ment was that creative had included a headphone socket, so did they not know what there doing? (for some reason, this is important in comparison the the card in question. I myself own a creative card and it doesn't have a headphone socket, so does this mean they were asleep or forgot about it? Yet I usually always use headphones on my computer, yet have never needed to reach behind the PC to plug them in, which is why its not there in the first place. In all fairness if the headphone socket was a necessity then he should consider getting one of those nasty graphic equaliser/amp things that sit in a 5 1/4" bay, and this would say him messing about at the back. As well as entertaining friends and relatives with some fairy lights. Enjoy life all.

We need more info... Check the IRQs, also if you've got savage4 then don't bother bin it. What type of crash? What happens? With my PC the video is really badly torn, and at 1 FPS. However if I change the colour depth for the entire system, from 16 to 32 bit or vice versa it all becomes normal and apears to generally work! Are you using the newer drivers that come in an exe file and say "for winnt and win2000" with the blue background? Also set the mode to primary only. Goodluck (you'll need it)

Diamond Micronics C200 AGP and PCI slot1 share same IRQ.
euankirkhope replied to FKTOAST's topic in Hardware
Yep, that’s right they do share an IRQ, or to be more precise a very thing small piece of copper track that means they can't be separated If you have another free PCI slot then just move the card, and that should allow the agp to have its own (fixed mistake!) IRQ. However if you’ve installed ACPI (check in the computer icon in system properties) then all your devices will appear to be on IRQ9, this is ok as long as your motherboard is relatively good quality, newish and has a bios with no gapping holes like mine Sorry but the AGP and PCI slot 1 are fixed permanently [This message has been edited by euankirkhope (edited 17 March 2000).] -
I think there was a post the exact same as this a while back. I'm not being rude or anything as I had the same problem, but I've just not bothered to try to fix it as I've not switched on my win98 machine since I installed win2k The last time I installed it that is. Since then, its being working perfectly (miricle). Now I can't remember what the fix was... Actually I'll go and find it... (5 mins later)... AH ha! http://www.ntcompatible.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000133.html Good luck

I get bad noise when i move the mouse! use menus, scrolling etc, try lowering the sound acceleration to normal, and disabling full window drag and fading menus...

You really must sit down; relax; and not think about the reckless irresponsibility of those engineers for misplacing that socket. Don't those people at creative recommend that you use the other line out for rear speakers, that sounds much better that having speakers and headphones plugged in at the same time Extra... There are 3 types of output (in order of badness); low Z high power, this is for headphones, unpowered tinny speakers. Which is a waste of power, 741 op-amps, etc reserved for the dark ages. Line out High Z, low power (small signal) used for a nice clean signal to a hifi amp etc. Needs a good SNR which the above messes up, also doesn't need much amplification. SPDIF / Optical, reserved for quality noise free signal transportation, and not good for plugging in either speakers of headphones, which is a growing (home) standard, (unless microsoft as anything to do with it). Does installing Win2k using ACPI mode as opposed to Standard
euankirkhope replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
The biggest performace difference is if your computer doesn't work after changing it -
Taskmon.exe is an important system program. If you press alt-ctrl-delete you'll see how handy it is (only in win98) And anyway its your own fault for installing them on the same drive

either use program in bootdisk folder on the cdrom. Or try running winnt32.exe /? for instructions. I think the latter one doesn't work any more to make simple pirates life more difficult. If you have a dos/win9x disk run setup (1386/winnt.exe from there), or elses set the cdrom as the first boot device in bios.

What it means is the line out and Headphones are one and the same. If you have the sound card plugged into an HIFI or decent speakers with an built-in AMP then they will have a HP socket and then (using there great skill and Intelligence) they will save you having to figet round the back of PC when you want to plug in headphones. The last thing a quality Sound card needs is an amp for headphones. There just sources of partition, shot and thermal noise that degrade the overall sound quality and signal to noise ratio. Inaddition to increasing to complexity and MTTF (Mean time to failure) and power consumption of the actual device . Don't you think these people with degrees actually know what there doing?
