How to CLEAN install Nvidia Drivers in W2K

Personally speaking I never delete drivers, unless I've screwed things up my mixing and matching files, to try and get direct3d to work. Usually this ends up in a BSOD, with safe mode and VGA mode not working either. It usually says "can't start the VGA service, or NV4_disp blah blah... To fix it I just delete the OEM*.* files and the NV4*.* files. Even though some of the oem files may be for other devices. NB. OEM files are created when a user installs drivers from a location outwith the windows driver library, are newer versions, or have the same name. Of which the typical install is all of the above. When you goto install new drivers, it's because of the oem files the "search" part of the procedure always finds other drivers that windows insists are better, we of course like to think better so we remove them I have a STB velocity 4400 TNT AGP, that's never worked with all versions of the win2k drivers, currenty I use the latest official WinNT 4 drivers which allows for Opengl and DDraw, which is good enough I suppose. ACPI and Win2K on EpoxK7A?

even if its not comatible enough you can disable acpi before installing anyway. You'll be able to tell if you com ports don't work and all your pci devices are on the same interupt! ACPI isn't really that big a thing, although the hibernate function is quite good!

    Via Boards + Win2k impossible ?

a while back i had this problem. the best way to fix is if you have a network card remove it, that one worked for me most time in beta3. If you don't have one remove everything and disable everything else in your bios (devices like USB, unwanted com ports, and UDMA that is). Seconldly if you installed a bios update to try and fix things, or is relatively new win2k setup will beleive you have a ACPI compatible MOBO. To disable advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) copy the i386 folder from cdrom to harddisk, and edit a file called txtsetup.sif using wordpad (before-hand unclick the readonly properties). Find ACPIOTIONS and read the bit of text about acpi then diable acpi accordingly (I think you change the 2 to 0). [This message has been edited by euankirkhope (edited 19 February 2000).]
  4. a k6-2 and 128MB is perfect, it is for me, it the chipset that knackers everything though. My fic va-503+ and TNT don't want to know each other! Even with a new bios, that fixes the interrupt assignment, similar to the patch needed fow win9x

Nvidia's 3.78 drivers and Win2k? Did they work for ya?

no no no no the same story for every version. I always get a blank screen, but everything else works (I think), the monitor is not having sync probs either its just blackness. still, I'm using the latest NT4 drivers which are perfect for opengl and ddraw My system: fic (viatech mvp3) va-503+ 1.1b bios JK4324 current limiters disabled amd k6-2 450 ahx stb velocity 4400 tnt1 16MB agp hauppauge wintv (that now works with a small screen, latetcy in win2k is bad) sndblaster PCI64v es1371 udma 33 hd, ls120, creative labs 48mx cdrom Realtek 8029 PCI crap isa modem 28.8 ps2 mouse at keyboard and knackerd com ports (due to acpi) monitor compaq 450, manuf' 1992 no known info!

How to CLEAN install Nvidia Drivers in W2K

thats way to much effort! goto \winnt\inf and delete oem*.* this then prevents win2k from finding other versions of drivers other that the original nv4 drivers in the driver library, and the one that you have selected to directly install. IE you didn't select "search". It also make the existing NV4 files reduntant. However extra tidy people can delete all nv4 files if they want.

    Bios flash in W2K

only a few bios have full acpi (advanced configuration and power interface). Win2k expects acpi bios to allow windows to setup all the hardware. However most bios' although say acpi, they only do the power management, so you may get hardware conficts etc. To fix this you need to either reinstall, but edit a file called txtsetup.sif before to disable acpi. or reinstall a "standard pc" system in the hardware properties which is a one way process and very very risky. the txtsetup modification: copy i386 folder to harddrive remove read-only properties on the file open in wordpad search for acpioptions read the bit of text (optional) find the line ACPIEnable = 2 change to ACPIEnable = 0 save file run setup32.exe easy

STB Velocity 128 ZX w/TV Out?

what your PC spec with the STB velocity 4400, because i have a FIC va-503+ with win2k rc2 and the TNT has never shown a picture (except in vga mode). It always starts up with a blank screen, and complains about not being able to start the driver. I have tried every version of the NT4 and WIN2k drivers around, and never had any sucess!

    Riva TNT Problems Revisited

ME TOO! That problem has always haunted me, through all versions of Win2K I've had, and nobody had come up with a solution. My STB Velocity 4400 has only worked once, and when the computer was shutdown, and restarted later it had relapsed (this was with STB NT4 drivers). If you look in the system properties and you see all your PCI devices on IRQ 11, then you have installed the win2k with ACPI on a non-ACPI system. And as in above post, as the IRQ routing isn't working properly, your TNT won't work. It will just say it can't start or there are files missing. Good things to try are: remove all other cards, and disable everything else in bios, re-install with ACPIOptions = 0 in txtsetup.sif (in i386 folder), get a bios update, If your motherboard is a Fic va503+, just bin win2K. If you have found a fix please email me.

    Win2k ate my Via

After a few (under-exageration) installations of the beta win2k i have a few findings: Viatech mvp3's bios isn't ACPI friendly, the result is all PCI devices on the same IRQ, the com port and lpt bios routings have been destroyed. Now the bios halts with a "i/o port conflict 3f8 2f8 ... The only combination of com ports that don't conflict is 2e8 (com 4)and 3bc (lpt 3) with the second port disabled. (This bug is fixed in a new beta bios JE4322 for my fic va503+ motherboard, which doesn't fix it). However the diabled com port still appears (along with the disabled floppy drive, i have a ls120. Although i haven't tried the com port as there are no drivers for my yamaha synth thats connected to it. As we go on... my stb velocity 4400 each time shows a blank screen after installing win2k rcX. Whereas my Ati ragepro2x works 99%. (haven't tried DX7 and probably won't, can't tempt fate) All though the blank screen is understandable when the card has to fight over 1 irq with the other cards, it still does it when it has its own irq (cards removed), and when win2k is installed with acpi disabled, and the resources are evidently stable. I have tried many versions of the win2k drivers, and none appear to work with RC2, whereas 1 or 2 worked with beta 3. Thus it'll have to be an NT4 driver. Basically what i'm saying is some people will never have a system that works 100%, and being in the non intel socket 7 club, i expect to see the same problems in the final release and patches turning up in a couple of years. ps although win2k is a mightly fine operating system, the hardware i have is a pile of !£!".

    Ensoniq/Creative Sound Blaster 64 PCI

Is your mic working... in win9x?, not muted, volume up, gain boosted and record volume set to all or mic (if using the creative mixer)or the select box ticked in the recording section of the volume controls. If so then try the updated drivers at the microsoft windows update site! PS i,ve never got mine to work, but i don't have a PC mic, I use a real one. Good luck.

    W2K Boot manager & Linux ?

    1. You need to install LILO in linux's own partition. Not c:\ or sda1 / hda1 etc. 2. Get a program called bootpart (get it at http://www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm ). This program will then copy the first 512 bytes of the linux partition and make a file that goes in c:\. By the way the first 512 bytes in c:\ is the NT bootsector, installing lilo in hda1 will overwrite it: BAD IDEA! IF your good with linux you can use dd to copy the bootsector directly then edit the boot.ini file in c:\ manually, but I don't have an example handy. Sorry. 3. NTdetect then uses this "boot sector" to start linux. It can also be used to repair win98 and winnt menu items. If the original bootsector is overwritten (like re-installing win9x). The program will add the menu items and everything easy! However i'm not sure if it works with fat32, but i'm sure that won't matter, or maybe the program has been updated. 4. Also make a reference to c:\ in LILO so if you select LINUX in the NT menu and change your mind you can go back!

BSOD IRQ Less than Or Equal to

Yes! I know how you feel. I have virtually the same problem as yourself, read about it in the http://ntgamepalace.3dfiles.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000053.html post. The problem is caused by your PCIIrqRouting, which is not correctly setup. The problem may be your bios, or the ACPI (advanced config and power interface), or micro$oft software. If your bios is after 1/1/99 then win2K assumes you have a 100% compatible ACPI PC. As you have wiped win2K, copy the win2K setup files to your harddrive and edit the "txtsetup.sif" file to disable ACPI, which will then prevent the fancy configuration etc. To do this search for ACPI and read the comments and change the setting to a "0". When its installed goto the device manager and select Standard PC/ properties and disable irq routing. Problem solved! Also read http://ntgamepalace.3dfiles.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000101.html which is also relevant. Good luck!

    Viper550 TNT problems

Yes your right it should be half the main memory, but in the STB faq it says set to max if there are compatabilty problems. Usually it is set at 64 MB on my computer, I've tried4, 8, 16, 32, 64... Most likely the problem is all down to the motherboard. I've got a ATI Rage Pro 8MB 2X AGP, and it works straight out the box!

    Viper550 TNT problems

Guess What i tried it! Even though my computer isn't overclocked (unlike bloke up top) and it worked. Twice. The only problem is that the computer wouldn't shut down. After reseting it would take 3 tries to get it back. Also i tried reinserting one pci card, and it would hang as before. After a while it completly died. Tried a few other card and my isa modem. None worked with the TNT. The setting i used were for others: Hardware AMD K6-2 450 (100Mhz) @ 66x4.5 FIC VA503+ viatech MVP3 motherboard 1 MB cache 128 MB pc100 8ns @ 66 Mhz non PC100 CPU and AGP set to use same clock speed AGP bios set to 256 MB aperture All other Bios settings at default, except for AGP use interupt. IDE 0 M Samsung 6.4Gb HD on UDMA33 IDE 0 S None IDE 1 M LS 120 IDE 1 S Creative 24x NO PCI card inserted NO ISA card inserted USB disabled Floppy disabled COMs and LPT disabled Software Win2K 2072 Advanced Server Install win2000 with DPMI disabled in txtsetup.sif. Everything else clean (untouched). PS setting the K6-2 to 300Mhz disabled the MTRR's which were introduced from the revision 8 onwards which knackered win98s timing loops etc. So it needed reinstalled. Thanks Yuppiescum.

    Viper550 TNT problems

Some people aren't as fortunate as others. My bios is fine. Tried both installing win2K with and without dmpi, the latter fixes irq routing errors, however the tnt still shows a blank screen. It as if the display is being redirected to the tv out, or s-video. Or the reference drivers don't understand the ramdac, as only the STB win98 drivers work in SVGA. No D3d and no opengl
  18. Is there a fix to prevent the via mvp3 putting three pci devices on the same interupt. In win98 there is a patch fo this. However a quick look in the win2000 (RC1) registry shows that "PnP" has "DisableFirmwareWrapper" enabled (1), also in "PCIIrqRouting" the code 0F refers to a toshiba type board. Changing this to the correct code for the via mvp chpset, (b)ie 11, and enabling the firmwarewrapper makes no difference after restarting. Are there any other ways of forceing the correct Irq miniport? I have a LS120 which works fine, so i have the floppy disabled in bios. So why does the device page insist in a red X on the Floppy disk drive which doesn't exist? Does anybody know why my PC (Win2K v2072) has com 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 are unavailable? Is this for Debug purposes?

    Dual (or Triple) Boot problem!

If you want rid of the NT boot loader type "fdisk /mbr" in dos and you will return to the original win9x startup. It's as easy as that.

    VIA chipset (MVP3) HELP ?! :(

There are known problems with Via MP3 and UDMA66 so check with your motherboard manufacturer for a bios update to either fix or disable it. It is most likely the recent bios updates have enabled ATA66 on the Via chipset. Personally, I have a via mp3 board, but no such problems, except i have to take everything out the computer because something hangs it during setup. However after installing w2k and putting everything back in everything’s relatively fine. In your case first disable Ultra DMA (temporally) and never put other devices on the same IDE channel if UDMA is enabled (bad experiences), also if you have lilo from linux installed get rid of it by doing from dos "fdisk /mbr". This will remove the NT boot manager also, so you'll have to reinstall, or use bootpart to fix it... www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm Good luck! Viper550 TNT problems

PS None of the detonator drivers direct from NVIDIA work, i've tried then all 9x/NT/2000, and the beta ones that legally haven't been released yet, upto v2.17. I think it's something to do with the ramdac and the mutliple outputs for tv/s-video etc. So connect up a tv and check!

    Viper550 TNT problems

ME TOO!!! I have a Velocity 4400, with the same problem. The fix for this probem is to use WHQL Win98 certified drivers (in my case), not the standard microsoft/ NV4 files. The only drawback is opengl will hang the computer with the new dark blue style screen of death.
