no!!! it was "Advanced Configuration and Power interface(ACPI)" the mobo is most likly to be compatible to some extent or another. My old (now dead) FIC VA-503+ needed loads of bios updates, and the serial ports never worked in ACPI (used add on card), but at least my TNT worked! It didn't without ACPI. Do the F5 setup now!!!

I agree wif SHS, you don't need to re-install just goto "standard PC" in "computer" in device manager and update the driver from "standard PC" to "ACPI". Click on update drivers, click on "display list of of known...", blah blah, and select Advanced configuration and power interface(ACPI), ignore the rest as there for multi-processor PCs. Reboot!

Not cut it?!! Whatever could you mean No really I have found no real problems, although some people have had problems with 19" veiwsonic monitors, and couple of other large screen "mid-high-end monitors". The problem was were the ddc2b (plug and play" was not working, locking the refresh rate at 60Hz. It is fixible by either a forthcoming driver, or getting a properly terminated cable. Check out the www.rage3d.com radeon forum for the lowdown. Overall the card is excellent for business use, and 98% there for games. Remember the drivers are still immature. rage3d will have all the queastions you need! ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120

system must be in ACPI mode with fully compliant bios.

This can also be caused by the monitor sending crappy ddc (plug and play info) Try changing the monitor cable, or moving it away from power cables. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120

if yoy're talking about a ls120 / 240 ide. then win2k just thinks its a big floppy/small harddrive. There is no need for drivers/are none.

I had the same problem with my curren mobo. First of all Athlons (all K7's) need a massive power supply. At least 300W and AMD approved. My old PSU (pre athlon) was 250W. When I pressed the power button all that would happen is that the case fan would rotate a quarter turn. Thats all! I disconnected everything, and it would come alive, but only until the video was initialised. Then it just died (power off). I got an athlon approved PSU. Set it up, still nothing. The PC shop Sound Technology Systems said they had had the same reports. So I took it back and all the PSUs were sent back. So I got a new one, with a different HI-POT date and it is working perfectly. But before you embarass yourself make sure you have connected the power on switch to the correct pins, not suspend or sleep, or some other obsure thing. I do it all the time, and I have had friends and friends of friends, the odd driving instructor!, and people I don't even know turn up at my house with a new motherboard that doesn't work for this reason. Oh, also, I bought a athlon motherboard from www.dabs.com, and this was before I had my approved power supply. Apparantly the board can be damaged if the power supply is not powerful enough. Haste to say, the board never worked (oops <:-D ), still the dabs people though it was a cache problem, and took it back. Also make sure if the board allows normal AT power connects that the correct switch is set. IE ATX/AT is set to ATX. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120

Ah ha ha ha ah ha ha (how do you convey extreme hilarious laughter and snickering with a slight hint of my god is this guy a vvanker or what. I guess he is really 13 years old and just had one of those immature accidents where a complete fabrication and extreme exageration gets let out.) Did I say that I had windows 2K (the stripped down X-box version) installed on my 8040 with 4K ram? Runs like a dream... X-box 3D demos are really smooth too with my ISA ATI RADEONII 64MB DDR (AGP 8X (SSb enabled))... Do think I could run it on my Apple colour classic? Its at least 16Mhz I'd struggle to even find ~60 disks to install win95 on my IBM PS2, even still it wouldn't fit on the 80MB HD. And I don't have all day to backup the HD over serial (cos its not IDE) When I melted my K6-2 550, I tried swapping the boards, and thats about as far as i'd go. My 486 was at least PCI/ISA with dual simms, ran parallel to 586's for a while. You've gone to far boy.

Why does it have to be a conflict? Perhaps this is what links the AGP (nae PCI) controller and the TNT2 together. After all that is what DMA is. Direct memory access. One device puts stuff up in a space, the other copies it and vice versa, hey presto data communication. If it just so happens that the devices are miscomfigured due to a driver problem or f£^%up then thats life! What I'm trying to say is don't bother yourself with the small things like IRQ or memory conflicts. In this day and age you can't edit the addresses etc. You can really only change the drivers and install patches. This is what you should do. So you should first get the latest (stable) reference drivers from www.nvidia.com, and also get the latest AGP/motherboard drivers. The memory spaces are configured as such because your card is in VGA mode. When the drivers start working, all that would change as the system allocated the resouces it requires, all that MTRR stuff. At the moment there is in effect a temporary link connected the TNT2 and the AGP bus. What you should think about is instead does the tnt2 have any IRQs available for it, is the bios set to allocate one, and is ACPI enabled. Perhaps you motherboard is not ACPI compliant. Make sure the TNT2 is not sharing an IRQ by removing (just for this now) the upper most PCI card (slot1) as these two spaces are hard wired to share an IRQ. Al lot of older motherboards require a bios update to fully support ACPI, check this. If this is the case then some nvidia drivers work/some don't. It is a lottery. When I had my mvp3 motherboard and TNT1 it was a nightmare until about after 6 bios updates. After that the system would work straight out of the box. Do you ever get a blank screen where the monitor appears functional, yet is black? Are there any messages in the event viewer? ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120

FIC Tech support sent me Windows 2000 bios update for PA-201
euankirkhope replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
IF the board doen't like ACPI, just force the installations not to use it. Then there will be no more than the usual problems! I think win98se uses setup -p-j commands to disable ACPI (not much use when you forget). Not sure though. The 438/9 bios are post 2000 so that will cause ACPI to install by default. The official bios' will not be dated newer than 2000, unless the board revision is fully ACPI compliant. -
I've also got to add my bit! My brother has a geforce, and it's actually really good. I've got a radeon and although the 3D is silghtly poorer, and also alot of the geforce optimised demos from tranzmit.demozone.com don't work. However I've not had any problems with games, and I didn't even notice that there was a problem with Athlons and win2k. Apparently the performace was nearly half that of intel combinations and also win9x. But it was fixed very quickly. It's good to see ATI doing stuff quickly these days. Anyway, the ATI has the major benifits of 3 textures per cycle (future proofing, good for bumpmapping, detail tectures etc) Excellant DVD playback and excellant Video in and out. 2D is 100% too. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120

Why connetix doesn't release a Windows 2000 friendly Virtual
euankirkhope replied to someone_nt's topic in Games
VGS doesn't work in win2k as NT doesn't tolerate dirty little hacks to access the CDROM (as an example). By using the proper access routines to access the low-level hardware the latency would become to high, which would then screw up the timing for the emulator, similar to problems all emulators suffer. It is really difficult to make a fast low latency application, that doesn't sacrafice stabilty. -
FIC Tech support sent me Windows 2000 bios update for PA-201

The fact that it's dated pre-2000 shows that it will not install ACPI by default. When I had my va-503+ the last bios I had was JE439. Never mentioned on the web site. From memory the date was around spring 2000. I'm sure there was either a JI438 or 439. It never actually fixed anything, and made installing win98 a nightmare, because it installed win98 in ACPI mode. I'm happy to say that because of my little mod on the board to disable the CPU current limiter, allowing 400+Mhz K6-2'S, when a cpu developed a fault, it destroyed the board (current overload), and all my other "spare" k6-2s Now I have an athlon, and am very happy, not one problem. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120 -
I encourage all to waste a whole night (having fun and BSOD's), installing win2k on a 486. I tried it with my AMD 486 120Mhz 64 MB (I originally attempted it with 16mb <:-) ), and it was a nightmare! The first part of setup took about 2 hours, which only suceeded after the 3rd attempt. The extra memory makes a vast difference. Still it was "educational" I have a bog standard 486 (33Mhz) and an orginal IBM PS2/55 with 80MB propriatory HD, so definately no more experimenting. I'm very adimant that pentium (i meant 586 like cyrix/amd) @ 300 with min 64 MB mem. I've never had a PII, but comparing the performance of my past Cyrix 166+, and K6-2's at 300, 450 and 550, a PII @ 233 is good competition, even for the k6-2's (and thats coming from an AMD lover!). <Caution> Do not attempt installation on 486, unless already bald. Otherwise extreme self-inflicted hair-loss may occur. </caution> I forgot to say: it never worked! ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120 [This message has been edited by euankirkhope (edited 22 October 2000).]

pentium only, server will not recommend install with less than 64MB 300Mhz. Read the manual, page 1!

Posibilities: 1. ACPI will be installed regardless if the bios is newer than 31/12/99. 2. Edit the txtsetup.sif file in i386 folder (by copying folder to c:\ first). Search for ACPIOPTIONS, and read blurb, then set accordingly. 3. goto system devices in "computer" select update driver and select from "known list" Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). Reboot. Hardware is then redetected. Will screw up system if bios is faulty. 4. one of the other suggestions. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (oem and proud of it) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW/CD, 4,6,4,24) Segate SS330630A 30Gb 7200 ATA4 LS120

I really really like my ATI radeon. video in and out, excellent DVD/MPEG, and really good 3D, and excellent 2D

SB64 and sb128 are pretty much the same, except the 128 has an extra 64 software midi voices. I would go with the PCI128.

My SB64 also with es1371 has far better drivers than my SBlive. Fair enough it doesn't have 3d sound or eax etc, but at least it gives faultless performance. It is excellent for mixing MP3's in winamp. Compare: Winamp, using Directsound output: ES1371 Bufferlength >> 100ms Blocksize >> 1K Can mix 5 mp3 at same time before breaking up (on k6-2 550) SBlive Bufferlength >> 400ms (yet still loses sync) Blocksize >> 10k The card refuses to play 2 tracks at the same time, instead creative have invented an amazing form of TDM (time division multiplexing) good for telecommunication companies, but not mixing tunes. Therefore the sb64pci is at least 4 times faster, and is very stable. Basically when you go to match up BPMs or change the pitch the ensoiq chip is far far faster. It is impossible to mix with close to a half second delay. This also is reflected in audio apps. such as VST, and wavelab... I worship the ES1371. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (10/10) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb UDMA 4 LS120 If Jungle.com say it is not in stock it'll never be in stock, so don't order it.

The noise shouldn't cause any effects. If it is magnetically induced, IE the cables are running next to other data cables, then there is the possibility of corruption, but I can't really see any problems. I'm assuming the fans are 12/24Vac, if they're 110/240Vac then the induction from the fans onto the power supply (via mains) should be compensated by the PC switching power supply, and internal filters. Again there is the induced noise, which will be incresed by the higher voltage. Yet still relatively insignificant. Bottom line is: The noise by these 2 fans will most likely be less than your other 10 DC fans. The use of AC external supply is that it isn't adding noise to the internal power supplys. Just keep the wiring tidy, and offosite the motherboard side for high V stuff! If the guy who sold the fans stated stuff about noise then I personally, would assume that they are intended for medium-heavy plant use, like on the back of refridgerators, at the top of large 19" rack cupboards, not in PC's. For God's sake make sure there are grills on the fans, or your bound to lose your fingers. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (10/10) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 PCI64v Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb UDMA 4 LS120 If Jungle.com say it is not in stock it'll never be in stock, so don't order it.

First check if the com port is detected and not disabled/dis-functional. It is likely that win2k is installled to use ACPI. Many older PCs use APM (Advanced Power Management), instead of the new ACPI (Avdvanced Configuration and Power Interface). Typically, when the motherboard/bios are incompatible with ACPI, the com ports do not work. If the Com ports report some sort of error mentioning "Latch", and that it basically doen't think that you com port is a com port, then this is your problem. You need to change it to use "Standard PC", instead of ACPI. Time for that search button again!
