Probably mis-interpretation of the assembly code, some optimisations may not be correctly identified, like sse, or 3dnow specific instructions, this will case a stop error, followed by a reboot depending on what your pc is setup to do in such an event. Often CPU overheating is a good candidate. Followed closely by AGP bus errors, see the AMD patch about that, it is specific to athlon based systems. Also the soundcard 3d extensions are good causes of errors ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (10 out of 10) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb UDMA 4 LS120 If Jungle.com say it is not in stock it'll never be in stock, so don't order it.

Try setting memory to normal, or fast, (cas3) and disable external cache.

Is UDMA enabled? On the first boot after installing win2k, if udma is enabled under various circumstances it can destroy the bootsector immediately after the bootmenu has cleared. With the via mvp3 the via 4-in-1 driver must be installed before UDMA is enabled in bios. Also pnp os should be off, usb on. Please clarify make/revision of motherboard. Where exactly does the PC hang? immediately after bootmenu, on load of win2000 startup logo, on desktop startup? how far does the bootlog get (c:\winnt\ntbtlog.txt)? Safemode sucess/fail? Manually set bios options? CPU cache? is motherboard rated for k6-2 450? many are not. Some require specific revisions of K6-2, AHX use less power than the AFX (or vice-versa). Overclocking?, non standard system clock speed, 75/83.5Mhz is bad. [This message has been edited by euankirkhope (edited 26 September 2000).]

Well I tried it for a while, its no were near as good as BeOS. Although the internet (with java), printer support, DVD playback(missing?), and quake3 support is far superior to Beos currently. I have this pre-view from benews (beos website!) on QNX it has some pics: http://www.benews.com/story/3463.1.html On the install front, the root password the windows install setup didn't work as the keyboard mapping was set to US, I use a UK map! Luckily my normal account password had only chars and numbers. On the RtP side its pants, although I might want to blame the Vesa mode drivers for my ATI radeon (nice!) the media player breaks up in big style when playing back wav's and MP3s when doing the simplest things such as copying files, scrolling webpages, and open apps. BeOS does not do this at all, ever. It too has been relegated to Vesa Mode drivers. Also their is no way to set the default sound card. Score 2/5, for now anyway. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 Radeon 64Mb DDR (10 out of 10) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb UDMA 4 LS120 If Jungle.com say it is not in stock it'll never be in stock, so don't order it.

setup will install ACPI regardless of bios settings if the bios is dated as released after 01/01/2000. YOu have to manually disable ACPI in the setuptxt file, or by pressing F4? during the initial setup stage setting computer to "standard PC". Also reduce any hardware problems by removing all cards ubtil the OS is installed and running. I found that the Realtek 8029, although rock solid (stability wise) caused problems with older Bios' and via chipset drivers, but eventually this became less and less a problem, as newer bios' were relesed. Before my fic 503+ died, it went from a nightmare install to striaght forward no problems, the only difference being the bios.

Thanks, It's nice not to be flamed! Pity I went and bought an ATI radeon a few days ago both BeOS and QNX don't have drivers yet. I'll need to get out the old TNT. So far it has taken 9 minutes to write the bootdisk, and is nearly finished verifing it after 5! Is it comiling a kernel or something? <excitement> Got to go its ready, ha ha yes yes </excitment>

Back again, had to re-install w2k, it kept on resetting just before the logon box. What chip is it? Anyway, I've been digging around in the default install drivers, which as the advanced control menu item greyed out in the volume properties. We need to find out how to enable it, registry key? inf option? no sucess yet. Have a look somewhere in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\ in the large selection of hex numbers there is the multimediamedia stuff, my own PC has the Sb64V at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0002\Settings] This seams to be the equivalent place where such a registry key would go to enable tone controls. It holds the following (on my PC) "WaveVol_Left"=dword:00030000 "WaveVol_Right"=dword:00030000 "WaveMute"=dword:00000000 "CDVol_Left"=dword:fffffff6 "CDVol_Right"=dword:fffffff6 "CDMute"=dword:00000000 "LineInVol_Left"=dword:fffffff6 "LineInVol_Right"=dword:fffffff6 "LineInMute"=dword:00000001 "MicBoost"=dword:00000001 "MicVol"=dword:fffffff6 "MicMute"=dword:00000001 "VideoVol_Left"=dword:fffffff6 "VideoVol_Right"=dword:fffffff6 "VideoMute"=dword:00000000 "AuxVol_Left"=dword:fffffff6 "AuxVol_Right"=dword:fffffff6 "AuxMute"=dword:00000000 "PhoneVol"=dword:fffffff6 "PhoneMute"=dword:00000000 "LineOutVol_Left"=dword:fff3fff6 "LineOutVol_Right"=dword:fff3fff6 "LineOutMute"=dword:00000000 "WaveInMux"=dword:00000004 "MixCapVol_Left"=dword:ffffffe4 "MixCapVol_Right"=dword:ffffffe4 "CDCapVol_Left"=dword:ffffffe4 "CDCapVol_Right"=dword:ffffffe4 "LineInCapVol_Left"=dword:ffffffe4 "LineInCapVol_Right"=dword:ffffffe4 "MicCapVol_Left"=dword:000f000a "MicCapVol_Right"=dword:000f000a "VideoCapVol_Left"=dword:ffffffe4 "VideoCapVol_Right"=dword:ffffffe4 "AuxCapVol_Left"=dword:ffffffe4 "AuxCapVol_Right"=dword:ffffffe4 "PhoneCapVol_Left"=dword:000f000a "PhoneCapVol_Right"=dword:000f000a I think the best results will come from the creative mixer, not the MS one. The last option is to use a port access driver called DLPortIO which allows direct hardware access in NT! On which a somple visual basic program (or word document!) could set the tone controls. But that depends on what type of chip is on your card, and whether it actually has tone controls. Does the win9x hack, just enable the sliders, or does it actually alter the sound? The register address's would simply be taken from the linux driver source code. 10/10 for open-source

Perhaps there isn't actually Bass and treble support. The 2 options are standard microsoft settings, if you edit the registry you can enable them, but nothing will happen. I'm saying this as I've tried with my SB64PCI (ES1371) it is similar to some PCI128's, but without the extra 64 software midi voices (where it gets the name from).

Yes, thats what i found, but its back to the custom sound chip problem! The other programs just can't program it right. one app that came with a register editor was the closest I got to getting sound with the apps, but it messed up Huappauge's own WinTV program. It make it clear on who's side the problems lie, (Hauppauge); and they have done nothing about it.

Just wondering... With the overlay enabled, when you go into TV mode is the picture stretched to full size, without changing the resolution? With my TNT in Win2k overlay didn't work, and in win98 it only worked @ <1024. With my new radeon it works in Win2k, but not with full screen stretch, and in win98 it works at my default resolution of 1280.

If the interference (or "noise") is in parallel bars from top to bottom, I've had them several times. The only way they went a way was by re-installing the card its drivers.

The newest is not always best. Stick to what hauppauge tell you. WDM drivers do not work. Do not waste your time!!! Turn off overlay use "primary", or if it's that bad "DIB". Assuming you have a Bt848, 878, 878a chip then the standard video for windows drivers should be fine. Start with the basics, forget about the FM bit for now. IF you can get 1 frame/sec with mono sound, and no radio then thats a start. My own card is a Wintv Nicam (model 406), and no other drivers work for it, added to that it has a specific sound chip on it too. If you want to waste time then search this forum, and go here: http://www.geocities.com/amethman/ Maybe its something else? Like ACPI, those 3 scsi cards and two voodoo2's, and the 400 users connected to your server If you have the time rip out everything and try getting it to work with just video card, mobo, and tvcard (and of course win2k). Also try the NT4 drivers. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 TNT (radeon coming) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb UDMA 4 LS120 <Unknown> has caused a fault in <Unknown>. <Unknown> will now close.

I'm a student; and watching TV is my Major (well thats what those americans call it). Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 works OK. Fair enough its sometimes crackly, and the full screen stretch mode doen't work ( a huppauge + TNT thing). But it does have Nicam Stereo, which can then be plugged into the dolby pro-logic amp (mandadory for all students), along with the two amps, and ten unique speakers. Cheap too!

Computers (generally any type) were intended to have individual IRQ's. The reason PC's have PCI steering in win9x, and ACPI etc nowadays is be cause the computers are limited to 16 IRQs. A legacy of the good old intel 8086 architecture. To squeeze that little more out of the pc when a device is not using an irq it has it removed. This is very bad for a device. it like having a limb removed. You have to bear in mind that many of these are reserved by ancient obscure devices like timers, and, the best one, there really are only 8 irqs. the second set of eight use IRQ2 in some strange system. Basically its a mess that has been messed with to many times. Stability only comes with minimal device IRQ sharing.

maybe do a check with the bios release. Does it alter any AGP settings, maybe requiring a motherboard chipset driver update? Maybe it fixes an incompatibility in previous revisions that then required bios settings to be specifically set, now not needed? Check AGP settings, AGP aperture when set to less than 4MB disables AGP, and the high end does odd stuff too! Try reseting the bios' hardware config by setting "reset configuration" to enabled. What does the bios update do? Unless it was required for a hardware problem you have, and frequently suffer from, then return to the original bios. A re-install sounds like the easy option. no need to delete anything though, just a re-insert cd and autoboot from CD. If the bios changed ACPI compatibility, then a reboot will fix this. Try uninstalling DX8, if found problems with it. It's not much use untill new drivers compatible with are released. I think there is an uninstaller at www.nvnews.com

also do a search for nv4*.* and oem*.* and delete them. Make sure \winnt\inf is not hidden, as this folder contains some of these files. Then reboot. ------------------ System Spec: Athlon 800 Gigabyte GA-7IXE F4 128Mb SSi PC100 TNT (radeon coming) Hauppauge Wintv Model 406 Realtek 8029 LAN (cnx to ISDN server) Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) Creative SBlive Value Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb UDMA 4 LS120 <Unknown> has caused a fault in <Unknown>. <Unknown> will now close.

How do I enable strech interpolation in 6.18 (detonator 3) d
euankirkhope replied to someone_nt's topic in Hardware
OK, but I'm sure you should check up on overlay, it performs a stretch in hardware. I not sure but a Blit is a copy from an off-screen buffer. There probably are functiosn that alter the copy to add effects like stretch and interpolation, but who knows? The slow down is most likely due to the drivers in NT not allowing certain function calls to be hardware accelerated (first stop check graphics acceleration slider). It then falls back to software emulation mode, and uses MMX integer or 3dnow(or whatever intel call theirs). Download the directX control panel program, and compare the supported functions. -
How do I enable strech interpolation in 6.18 (detonator 3) d
euankirkhope replied to someone_nt's topic in Hardware
You may also want to search for "hardware overlay" and "color key" if the application you are needing involves the transformation of live video/windowed app to be resized etc. This is usually used by DVD players, video media players, and TVtuners. It never works with TNT based (and geforce?) after detonator 2.08 for many applications such as hauppauge wintv in win9x (now fixed with 6.18), but still dead as always in NT/2000. IF you see a rectangle (usually pink) where your window should be then this is hardware overlay, with the color key trying to work. But failing. Is this any help? -
Heh heh, just wait till you get the "this beta has expired" message. There is a new version of DX8 posted at www.nvnews.net for both 9x and NT5. It might solve the problems.

While were on this subject: I've just bought this pile of crap for £35 (bfr vat). My first ever proper MS purchase (win2k corporate review, then gratious donation, win95, upgraded like 20 times always been off the network) Although I do have an offical NT4 CD, but with no license (that ba-star.d). Everytime second time I restart, a creative SBlive file called devcon32.dll, causes an illegal exception error in explorer.exe during startup, and consequently, winme fails to bootup to the shell - now we know why the restore function has appeared. System Restore would be good if: you could install all drivers and software, then make a backup, however you always end up restoring to the basic MS drivers and "unknown devices", before finishing. It actually worked, but then it said the restore failed and no changes have been made. MS finaly got the welcome presentation right, almost.
