    NEW TOPIC!

My TNT does me fine. But in linux the driver installation is way to complex for me. (and I have a degree in electronics). Nvidia show no interest in helping other companies (Be Inc.) Whereas ATI, Matrox, and 3DFX all have Hardware OpenGL drivers near completion for Beos www.benews.com the voodoo 4/5 is also near completion. Nvidia didn't even help with a basic 2D driver for anycard. There is a group of people trying to reverse the Geforce to get basic 2D! Thats why people buy voodoo cards (3dfx drivers for Beos have always been there), and also matrox G400's

    strange things happening in W2K

Have a look in the event veiwer in the administrative tools to see whats going on. I have virually the same system as yourself, and the usual blue screens are caused by either fastfat.sys, win2k.sys, or nv4.sys the basics of it is we have a socket 7 system which is ancient (no matter how new) which is not fully ACPI compliant (whatever anyone says) and has lots of "inverse-bugs" (where intel makes a bug, MS caters for it, but when a non-intel system doesn't have that "characteristic" things go pear-shaped) Most causes are memory faults, the CPU overheating. Remember the K6-2 is only good for sitting Idle. Make it work hard for more than 5 minutes and it will crash. Too see this just play a game, run seti@home, or something similar. A quick look in my event veiwer shows that my CDRoms are having lots of controller errors, there are lots of "paging" faults and countless bits and pieces of faults, warnings and such like... ------------------ System Spec: FIC VA-503+ 1.1b bios JE438 CPU Current Limiter Disabled AMD K6-2 550 (300 when I talk to FIC tech support) 128Mb SSi PC100 STB Velocity 4400 16Mb PAL TV-Out Hauppauge Wintv Realtek 8029 LAN Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) 56.6K (AkA 44k) ISA Modem Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb LS120 and com and lpt i/o conflict error during bios startup. creative tnt2 ultra agp wont work in win2k

If you mean VGA card then its there only because the TNT drivers aren't working. You have to change you PC from ACPI to "Standard PC" use the serach option in the forum for many descriptions of this. Get motherboard drivers from the chipset manufacturer, ali, viatech, intel, or sis etc... As you haven't supplied any info on your PC no one can really help. Its most likely that a bios update will fix the problems with the PC, if there is IRQ sharing problems. What type of motherboard is it? Does it have a bios that is fully ACPI compliant? do your com ports work? What other PCI cads do you have?

Getting Win95/98 to speak to Win2000

Yeah, that would be outright scandalous if someone hacked his computer and changed his scores. SH*£ man that would be downright nasty. Imagine what would happen to him if they edited his quake3 config file, un-inverted his mouse and made him a woman... Doesn't bear thinking about does it?

Nvidia 5.22/5.23 drivers no go w/Media Player

You could save yourself the money and just download the DX5 NT4 patch that used to float about, the only difference between w2k and NT4 is that w2k has the patches pre-installed (maybe thats why the install takes so long ) If it wasn't for the dx5 NT4 thing MS probably wouldn't have changed the file structure of DX7, and it too could have been made to work in NT4. Too bad. At the end of the day Opengl games in NT4 and w2k are just as good. Who wants DX7 anyway? Of course the patch will make your NT4 crash often, but that happens in win2k as well. Of course you'll miss out on fat32 for NT, but you probably have NTFS, so who cares? Or you've got the sysinternals program that is just as good! What were you talking about again?...

    Daikatana & Win 2000

First time I installed it it would hard-reset after about a minute. Something far nastier hapened shotly afterwards, which meant I had to re-install win2k, after 3 days of tring (setup would crash at the very very end of the component registering with a fastfat.sys error) Anyway after eventually getting it working and setup, the game works fine now. So maybe try re-installing the drivers, and disabling unecessary services.

    VXD files and Win2K

Right, you all know how you can get little programs that allow programmers to get direct access to hardware in NT4/5? Like, for programming the com and parallel ports. Well is there anything that will perhaps get vxd files to function in win2k, like a wrapper/emulator? I'm just curious as I'm trying to get my playstation joypad to work in Win2k, and is uses a vxd to access the LPT port ammongst other things. I would try an write a new driver, but its pretty much to complicated to program in windoze, let alone write a driver, and the dpadpro source is way to complicated for me to much of this bit-wise stuff... Although the linux source is readable... Come on, someone out there has to have the guts to do it. www.ziplabel.com for the details.

Nvidia 5.22/5.23 drivers no go w/Media Player

I doubt the input buffer has anything to do with it. Usually when a PC freezes it will still record inputs until the buffer is full after that it will beep for every extra input. It happens with win98 pratically all the time a freeze occurs.

    Grim Fandango and Win2K

It always seam to crash when changing scene. Maybe the code that loads the new scene/music is not fully win32 code. It is only a hunch, but try running a crack that disables the music and video sequences, you will need to delete certain files as well. Also I found software 3d to be slightly more stable, but not much. I don't have it installed at the moment so I can't try it. Good luck.

    Most stable NVidia driver?

To be honest I'd say the one that came with win2k. Why? Because theres no agp, no d3d and little ddraw acceleration, therefore theres not much to go wrong. ------------------ System Spec: FIC VA-503+ 1.1b bios JE438 CPU Current Limiter Disabled AMD K6-2 550 (300 when I talk to FIC tech support) 128Mb SSi PC100 STB Velocity 4400 16Mb PAL TV-Out Hauppauge Wintv Realtek 8029 LAN Creative ES1371 (PCI64v) 56.6K (AkA 44k) ISA Modem Creative 48mx CDROM Memorex TriMaxx200(DVD/CDR/CDRW, 6,4,24) Maxtor 91301U3 13Gb LS120 and com and lpt i/o conflict error during bios startup. Shogun reboots me!

That will be the new special code in win2k that states when tring to play any game the PC will reset, (or at least give a BSOD).

    AGP Controller install failure

The IRQ thing is ok, it's ACPI at work. The devices are all actually just held there, until one signals for attention then its given one of the other spare ones like 9 or 10, it does the job then its put back in with the others. Its supposed to be more efficient, but what if they all shout out at the same time and there's not enough IRQs? BSOD. Download the newest drivers for the Nvidia card the Detonator drivers V5.22 from www.nvidia.com are very good. Also look for a chipset patch for the AGP at the motherboard's website. Maybe it'll work after up[censored] the drivers.

    User Profile >> move/import?

I have 2 things I want to do with my user profiles. The first is to move them from c:\documents and settings\ (FAT32) to f:\users\ which is NTFS5 for security and privacy. The point is that if you copy the profiles to the new folder and set the path in the advanced user management it will copy the profile every time to the C:\ folder. I don't want this to happen, how can I set NT to use f:\users as the default profiles path? The second thing is, if I have to re-install windows I want to be able to import the original profiles and retain the settings, like Dialups, etc, how can it be done? What I find is that w2k makes a new profile but with an extension of the computers name (i.e. user becomes user.MYPC-WIN2000 and the original profile user is left untouched. All help much appreciated!

the "performance and stability of win2000" doesn't apply to playing games. Grim Fandango and Win2K - crashes

try software D3d, I seem to get the impression that it is the scene change that usually causes the crash (loading new tunes play small movie etc), you could try removing the sound and movie files, by using a crack from www.megagames.com (which will tell you how) this may (may) reduce some of the overhead.
