All I can say at this time is that the MSDN site has only posted the following for download. Windows Whistler Advanced Server (IA64) Beta 1 Windows Whistler Customer Support Diagnostics (x86 and IA64) Beta 1 Windows Whistler Professional (IA64) Beta 1 Windows Whistler Professional (IA64) Debug/Checked Build Beta 1 Windows Whistler Professional (x86) Beta 1 Windows Whistler Professional (x86) Debug/Checked Build Beta 1

A 2 gig partition is all it needs, it can be Fat,Fat32 or NTFS

Yo everyone, Just downloaded Whistler off the MDSN site (you must have an account) and all I can say is WOW! The install was a breeze, I was asked 2 questions and was given the option to change my network settings and that's it. At this point I have confirmed that my Geforce 2 card works fine using the 6.31 W2K drivers. Q3,HL,Star-Trek Elite Force and UT work just fine,(still have more games to test) The look and feel of the new OS is much different than W2K. The desktop can be a little annoying but you can revert back to classic settings if you wish. All my hardware except for my SB Live 5.1 card was installed and is working fine. I'm going to try and install the 5.1 drivers and see if I have sound. If all goes well and my current games and apps will run on this new OS I may switch over, but I'm going to give it a good testing first. I'll post more info when I have done more testing. If you can get yours hands on Beta 1 I would suggest giving it a try but partition and dual boot rather than doing and upgrade or clean install. ...

I was thinking of giving the Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz a try but wanted to know what motherboard I should purchase. I have heard about all the problems and don't fell like dealing with them so if all you AMD lovers out there could help me out it would great. I currently have a Geforce 2 card and a SB live 5.1 so I'm hoping not to have any problems when trying the new system out. Thanks for your help. ...

I don't know why I am so curious about the Amd cpu. I already have a Dual 850 box that is working just fine for me now. I guess the whole idea of having a 1 gig box is the reason. Think I'll just wait till a dual AMD chipset is available and give it a try then. My system specs are below. .... ------------------ My Windows 2000 System: Dual Intel 850's Tyan Thunder 2400 MB Onboard Intel 82559 NIC 512 Megs Ram Adaptec 39160 Ultra 160 2 - 18 Gig Cheetah - U160 1 - 18 Gig Cheetah U2W 1 - Maxtor 60 Gig (IDE) SB Live Platinum 5.1 Plextor 12/4/32 - Burner Plextor 40x UW CD-Rom 10x Sony DVD Drive Hercules Geforce 2 64meg Dual V2 Cards, for D2 Viewsonic PF815 22" Monitor ... OK? We will all be waiting....How many people do you thing have sent e-mail to creative asking that same question? There will not be an answer. Oh I forgot you must have an inside person there that can help you. hehe

Don't know about the rest of ya but I never had any problems running the SB Live Platinum card under W2K with my dual 850 system. I now own the 5.1 card and can say I'm having no problems either. This comes as a surprise to a lot of people I'm sure but the reason some of you are having SMP problems or for that matter problems with the SB Live line of cards is not just a driver issue but an OS and a hardware issue with other hardware that is installed in your box. I won't list my hardware specs in fear of getting flamed for trying to make people feel bad....so I was told by a few ass*holes we have on this board, posting my specs was never done to piss anyone off. My suggestion is to wait till livware 4 comes out or go out and pick up one of the new cards because the drivers and applications that come with the new 5.1 line of cards are different. Don't know if it's liveware 4 but it may be. SHS and I tried to get the driver package to install under W2K and had some luck in doing so. I would suggest contacting him or better yet maybe start another thread to find out if it's worth the trouble in upgrading. I'm sure the drivers could be posted to an FTP site I have one I could offer to do the job but I would ask SHS what he thinks. There are some problems with getting the new drivers to work with the older rev. 1 or rev. 2 cards. As far as anyone upgrading to SMP...Don't let a sound card or for that matter any piece of hardware stop you from having and SMP box.....find the hardware that works best together and use it don't exspect all hardware to work well in all configs and with W2K we all know that this can be a b*itch.... ...

I was at Comp-Usa today and noticed they have the complete line of 5.1 sound cards in stock. I did not notice anywhere on the box that it came with the new Liveware drives but it did have drivers listed for all MS OS versions. I have a SB Live Platinum, I was going to pick one up just to see if it had the new drivers and then return it but I thought I would post a message asking if anyone has picked one up and if there are new drivers boxed with it. Anyone have one??? Maybe I'll pick one up later and if the drivers are new I'll post them on my FTP server. I'll post the URL if they are new. ... None of the BX line of motherboards support 4x that I know of. Maybe a late revision mainbaord by Abit would, but I doubt it. And you won't see much difference over 2x.

Why even buy Wiindows ME? Just make sure you have a decent cpu and 256 megs of ram a run W2K. Just my opinion and like every other post I have made I'm sure people will blast me. But you know I'm right. hehe ...

I know the majority of you have had your SB Live work fine. I was just flamming all the people who have had problems with creative. They blame creative for there problems and not some other piece of hardware causing there sound card to not work right. Just thought I would get that off my chest since I seem to get in trouble when I don't agree with the anti-creative people that visit this board. ... -

OMG!!! Now I get to flame someone without getting in trouble. W9X is the biggest piece of S*hit to ever be released, 95 was better. The reason to run W2K is stability. And if you don't see that then you need to be banned from this message board. I have had the best luck out of everyone with W2K just ask everyone who has a SB Live card, I'm the only one who has a working sound card under W2K...lol Anyways, if you went back to W9X then you just don't know what the f*uck you are doing. ... ------------------ My Windows 2000 System: Dual Intel 850's Tyan Thunder 2400 MB Onboard Intel 82559 NIC 512 Megs Ram Adaptec 39160 Ultra 160 1 - 18 Gig Cheetah - U160 2 - 18 Gig Cheetah U2W 1 - Maxtor 60 Gig (IDE) SB Live Platinum Plextor 12/4/32 - Burner Plextor 40x UW CD-Rom 10x Sony DVD Drive Hercules Geforce 2 64meg Dual V2 Cards, for D2 Viewsonic PF815 22" Monitor ... I don't know of a single PII or PIII cpu that won't work in SMP. It's not the CPU that matters in SMP but the motherboard. Yes the PIII 500E will work just fine. For those of you who want to go SMP, I offer this bit if info. Unless the applications that you run (games) are written to take advantage of SMP, you won't see any difference. Quake 3 has SMP support built in but it does not always work right or not work at all. Alot of SMP problems that people have are not just with the application but with the other hardware in there system. If you have 2 cpus laying around I would suggest building a second computer out of it rather that going SMP. Now if you are going to do Cad or anything that is high cpu intensive then SMP is the way to go. Having SMP support for say running an application server or database server anything that requires high calculations then it helps. Hope the above helps you all out.

Ya you can have 2 different ones in the same system I guess, but you are not doing your system any justice by let's say having 1 800 and 1 500. If it's a choice over having a dual setup with 2 different cpus I'll take just having the faster of the 2 in my system.
-
Ok!!! Damn I'm wrong, that sucks.
-
Ok here is your answer. 1. To have a dual CPU setup both CPU's must be the same speed and also have the same model and stepping. In other words they have to identical. So your friend is wrong. 2. Yes you can have a slot 1 and a socket 370 or Flip Chip PGA CPU using the converter in the same system as long as they are the same also. I have built 2 systems using a Slot 1 P3 933 and the Flip Chip PGA 933. Just make sure they are the same model and stepping and also speed and you should be fine. ...

Short of giving it a good slap, I would suggest taking it to a monitor repair store or somewhere along those lines and having it looked at. ...

Making sure that a pin on your cable is not bent is the first thing I would check. Then hook it up to a pc that you know the vid card is working fine in, if you still have the problem then it will need to be fixed. ...
-
Oh GOD!! Not this again. Do a search for sblive threads and read them, it's your best bet. ...
-
That's great... my point is that why run ME at all when you can have W2K? I wonder if W2K would run on a 486? Maybe I'll give it a try this weekend. hehe
-
Have you registered Voodoolights? If not then it will do that. I had the same problem but noticed that the 30 day period was up. Everytime I would start the screensaver it would go back to the desktop a few minutes later. I registered and now that problem is not longer there.
-
Ok You want an answer??? NO!!! Damn why is it so important that you overclock?? So you can gain 5 Fps in Q3? Just leave things alone if they are working. The old saying goes, "If it aint broke don't fix it" Let's talk about something else. Someone needs to start a football thread. Ya let's talk about sports, because these stupid questions are killing me. ...
