    What would happen if....

Hey jdulmage - cut out the elitist rhetoric. If you review many of the posts, these types of threads are caused by folks insulting newbies who understandably retaliate. People are free to their opinions, as wrong as they may be, even if they don't agree with yours. You, and others, are then free to ignore them if they are not acceptable to you. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! Whistler Beta 2 Coming Tonight!!!!

http://www.wininformant.com/display.asp?ID=3043 It's not beta2 for once and for all - it is pre-beta2. EVERYONE will know when beta2 is released because, like beta1, beta3, rc1, rc2, etc... it is a fairly major milestone. MS would be releasing it with a little more fanfair. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! Faster: UltraSCSI, or ATA100?

I suspect he realizes that. In answer to the question, the UltraSCSI will be faster but for the added price, I suspect that running the Ultra100 off of a Promise Ultra100 controller will satisfy your needs and the speed difference will be neglible. I would not want to lock myself into SCSI unless I were doing a lot of vid cap (and the ultra100 should be fine for that as well). You should be able to get more than a 30 gig ata100 plus an ata100 card for the price of the SCSI hard drive. Check pricewatch.

Games freeze after 1-2 hours of play?

My suspicion is that it is related to the SMP setup. The fact that your Radeon was on irq 18 is rather strange. I would have strongly recommended making a Ghost backup of your current hard drive, and reinstalling Windows 2000. There is something wacky going on with the detection of devices as it should not have been necessary for Win2k to ***ign that irq, rather than irq 11. I have Windows 2000 installed in ACPI mode, btw. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! Games freeze after 1-2 hours of play?

Stephen - seems as though you didn't give the card much of a chance. I have an AIW Radeon (ex-Voodoo3 user) and have been quite happy with it. However, if you only used the drivers on the cd, that may have been your problem. Did you clean out all remnants of your old drivers as well? My setup is pretty generic intel, and have not had a SINGLE crash attributable to the Radeon in the month since I purchased it. I am running the 3073 drivers that can be downloaded from www.rage3d.com. BTW, even the special purpose drivers from ATI's site work very well, though are not as fast in games. ATI is working on unified drivers for the Radeon that will not be based on the old Rage drivers (as the current ones are), so are being rewritten from the ground up. They are rumoured to be much faster and should be released within the next couple of weeks. With respect to the original poster, what driver version are you running? Any irq conflicts? Is the problem due to overclocking the Celeron? Did you install DirectX8? ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! 9. When you right click on MY Computer, do you have an option for Manage? If so, access the Computer Management Console from there and see if going at it that way works. Alternately, do a repair install of Windows 2000 and see if that fixes it. You might want to log on as Administrator (even though you might have an Administrator privileges) and see if you can get at them there. Did you by any chance disable any services to tweak Windows 2000? ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! where has "msconfig" gone?

Agreed - it seems senseless to edit the registry manually when there is a product (a good and free one at that) that does it for you more quickly and even saves disabled keys. Startup Control Panel is a great little program. Shrink

    where has "msconfig" gone?

<Applause> There appears to be an undercurrent among some users on this board of elitism concerning who should and shouldn't be using Windows 2000. Perhaps it stems from (a) the fact that they may be sysadmins in their work and frustrated with endusers messing their systems up or ( folks who downloaded the latest and greatest OS and now gloat about their superior knowledge. In either case, the best help is to educate by example. The one biggest hurdle in dealing with the IT folks where I work is their attitude towards the enduser (i.e. all endusers are morons). Consequently, I have worked out "ways" of working around them <g>. It troubles me to see this board, which has been a great resource over the past 1.5 years for me, becoming similar to that with which I have to work on a daily basis. I also notice that there is an attitude developing that the more posts you have under your name, the more qualified you are. At the same time, the number of posts appear to be declining as the months go by. Maybe this could be due to: Windows 2000 becoming old news for many people; a tone that is being set within the forum members that is less productive than existed a year ago; or increasing frustrations over the sluggishness of this forum when it comes to accessing it <g>. You decide... ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! DirectX 8.0 question.

Not quite accurate - in fact, afaik, not accurate at all :-) DirectX8 installs MS's files that permit d3d, directdraw, directsound, directinput, etc... but do not update device drivers for individual components (e.g. sound cards, video cards, mouse drivers, etc...). If you haven't done it already, install DirectX8 and then LW3 for Win2k because the DX8 install does something funky to the directsound settings (if you have a voice modem, suddenly it becomes listed as the primary sound device). After that, install LW3 for Win2k and make sure that SB Live Wave Device is listed as the preferred playback device in control panel/sounds and multimedia/audio. ------------------ Shrink 92% of the things we worry about don't happen - but the other 8% DO! Upgrading from Win2k Pro to Whister Beta 1 Pro
