Need help with SCSI devices and other stuff :)

I suggest and Adaptec AHA-2940U2W if you are looking for excellent performance. However, the truth is, for a cdrom it is not going to make *any* difference whatsoever. The CD-ROM is *way* slower than the scsi bus, so even a cheap card will do. I personally use an Adaptec AHA-3950U2, AHA-2940U2W, Tekram DC310, and a Symbios Logic (NCR 5c8xxx).

Problem with Intel Pro/100+ Management adapter

I tried this same adapter in a system running RC2 and was unable to get it working. The generic driver is for an 82557 based card, and the Management adapter is a 82559 based card. The NT driver did not work, either.

    Multiproccessing

Oh yeah... The GS140 rocks. I am currently running on an 8-way 700MHz GS140 running Tru64. Unfortunately, if you plan on running NT on this box, I suggest going with an 8-way Xeon instead. NT runs like sh*t on the Alpha, which is the main reason Compaq dropped NT. If you really want one of these bad boys, well, install Linux or Tru64. Just for jollies: GS140: 8 6/700MHz 21264 Alpha CPU 8 GB ECC SDRAM 2 HSZ80 Storage Array Controllers 24 9 GB 10K RPM U2W Hotswap SCSI Drives 2 18.2 GB 10K RPM U2W Hotswap SCSI Drives Rackmount cabinet (for drives) Tru64 UNIX 5.0 Server License & OS Total System Cost: $748,943 PS - I am a Unix Admin and this is the system we just got as an upgrade for our aging AlphaServer 4100. This quote is only a month old, so it is fairly accurate. If anyone would like more information on this system (or Alphas in general) e-mail me at cgianelloni@revman.com

    WIN2k(rc 2128) Quake3 and SMP

Well, I am a Unix Admin, so I get paid ok... This is actually my home system, which I use to do 3D modeling, playing games, Photoshop, Real-time sound mixing/editing, cracking RC5 (Join team #6729 today!), surfing pr0n, listening to mp3s, and hopefully soon playing q3 in SMP and being able to watch TV (once 3dfx gets off their asses). I would love to get together sometime. I am currently re-designing the case. It was a normal full tower, but I am sticking this thing in an old HP Netserver pedistal instead. I am going to put pictures of it up online once I finish it, so I'll shoot you the URL. =]

    RC2, SMP, TNT, DX7

This may seem strange to some of you, but I am having a slight problem getting my video card to work correctly under RC2. This machine is a Dell Precision Workstation 410MT, dual P2-400, STB Velocity 4400 (TNT) running version 3.53 nvidia drivers. I have installed the DirectX 7 Final update and overwrote the files as asked. I now have no DirectX capabilies (DirectDraw, D3D) and no OpenGL. I cannot even play a video clip (AVI, Mpeg, Mov), as soon as I try, the system locks hard. It works fine for normal operation, but the inability to view movies or play any games is rather disturbing. This is my work machine, so these are not absolutely needed, but I am being left out of the great after hours Tribes games on the LAN. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to reply here. The install of Windows 2000 is RC2 (2128) and was done fresh from a clean drive, so there is nothing left over from a previous OS to mess with it.

    WIN2k(rc 2128) Quake3 and SMP

For Asylum, here are the specs for my system: Motherboard: Asus P2B-DS CPU: 700 MHz Coppermine (7x100) (2x) RAM: 128MB PC133 SDRAM (4x) Video: Voodoo3 3500TV Sound: Creative SB PCI128 (This is temporarily replacing my MX300) NIC: 3Com 3C905C 10/100 Other devices: Adaptec 3950U2 Tekram DC-310 The 2 coppermines are *supposed* to run at 100MHz. I am running a very customized cooling system to allow the processors to run at a 133 FSB, which is 931 MHz (7 x 133).

    WIN2k(rc 2128) Quake3 and SMP

I'm still waiting for Win2k to support SMP in q3, have quite a bit of processor power to throw at it. Dual 700 MHz coppermines running at 133 MHz FSB to equal 931 per processor (yes, they are *very* cooled). Now if they would only fix SMP support in the Aureal Vortex2 chips, I would be set. That and some support for all the goodies on the Voodoo 3500.

    Asus P2B-D, it Works?

I have run both an Asus P2B-D *and* an Asus P2B-DS. Both work perfectly under windows 2000. You may want to check what video/sound cards you have. SB Live and Aureal Vortex2 based cards do not work worth a damn on SMP systems. ------------------

PC-100 Ram and Pentium III 600 Prices Dropping

Actually, that crap about the Williamette being released 9 months early was a fake. It takes a year to get the fabrication available from the time the paper specs are done on a processor. The prices of current P3 chips and PC 100 RAM are going down due to the P3B and PC 133 RAM, and the release of the Coppermine, which was released today. http://www.intel.com/PentiumIII/18.htm?iid=feature+P3P2& ------------------

New NVidia reference drivers for RC2

Hrrmn... I have a Dell Precision Workstation 410MT with a STB Velocity 4400. Using the nvidia detonator drivers 3.52, my system locks up hard when trying to test directdraw. With 3.55, directdraw works windowed, but locks in fullscreen mode. I am running build 2128 (RC2). Any help?
