  1. I ask this question as a job I'm thinking of applying for lists MCSE accreditation in the Selection Criteria (also asks for Tertiary Quals) but only pays $AU46k. This is the only point in the criteria that I would not easily cover. All the other criteria listed, I could cover standing on my head and this leads me to believe that they are simply listing the MSCE to weed out serious people from tyre kickers. It is a PC support role in the public service dealing with hardware, software etc (you know the deal). I am going to apply for the position but am wondering how disadvantaged I would be by not having an MCSE? I have always scored well in the practise exams I've done so I figure I would have 60% of the knowledge req'd for an MCSE but due to where I live it's really hard for me to get it done. About the only thing I have had limited exposure to is AD but I know my way around Win2k/XP, NT4/2k server & Exchange enough not to get lost. What do you think?

    My neighbor needs your help

Use the Content Advisor built in to IE and use a password. I have set this up on a few machines for people who want to protect their grade school kids from the nasties of the web and it works pretty well.

    The new "*nix forum"

As a suggestion, put a link to the "sister" site on the front page so that everyone will know about it. Other than that, well done.

    Fourms slowing down!

I reckon this site has saved Microsoft milliion$$$$ if they chose to read it. Also, I think that rampant piracy of Betas and the consequent posting of problems on sites such as this should have given them a much wider testing base. Now while I don't condone piracy, I can see the commercial value in turning a blind eye to mass distribution of a beta. Perhaps Philip should hit MS up for some sponsorship.

    Fourms slowing down!

Perhaps the issue is that with 80 something thousand posts, we have covered the most common issues with NT/2k/XP compatibility??? The main ones seem to have been: - VIA & Win2k/XP - SBLive & Win2k/XP (drivers incl) - Networking Win98 and Win2k/XP - Sound in DOS games under Win2k/XP - Setting up broadband for the home. - Operating temps - RAID configuration - MPeg decoder cards - DirectX betas - Dual-booting - Multi-monitor setups - A buttload of system specs (if these don't show how compatible 2k/XP is I don't know what will) If you can think of other issues frequently dealt with, add em on. Be interesting to know the number of work hours required to produce the solutions to the problem. If you could put a true dollar value on this available knowledge, Philip would be a millionaire and all the members massive philanthropists. WE could be careful, with all this "knowledge for everyone, everyone being equal" we might be declared Commies.

    Member's forum?

To continue on Mr Frank's point, I believe that this board has remained as professional in attitude as it is because most of the people who frequent it have a job to do or classes to go to. There seem to be very few (save DosFreak;)) who sit on the board all day and reply to everything with inane comments attempting to start (f)lame wars. Hell, sometime APK's post are so full of info that I only read the first third of them. Perhaps he is "trying to take over the world" with information overload. In the words of Ali G - big ups yoself and maximum respek NTCompatible for keepin' it real....aieee.

I think it could possibly kill the other forum topics. If we always discuss issues in the "Red Shag-Pile Walls Room" then others would feel isolated and may feel reluctant to post questions. Spamming is not a problem as posts/members can be deleted or have their post count reset. NTC has a good reputation as an egalitarian forum where all intelligent questions will be answered with expertise and few "me too" posts. Let us not sully the reputation of this board by making people feel unwelcome. That's my $2.20 (inc GST), $2 (ex GST)

Rather than that, how about deleting all user accounts thus: repeat until EOF read user if user.dateCreated < 01/07/2001 and if user.postCount = 0 then delete user forum.userCount = forum.userCount - 1 end if next user Frown at significantly lower member count. Ok this logic is really bad. Lucky I only write VB, SQL and Access databases in my job.

    Dual monitors question...

In your BIOS there will be a setting that deals with initialising order of PCI/AGP. Set the option to initialise AGP first and your problems will be fixed. HOWEVER - if your PCI card is a S3 it will not work as secondary. Also some other brands have the same issue. Whe I did this I bought a 2mb Matrox Millenium and everything worked fine.

Anyone own a Sony DVAS300 DVD Player?

Quote: There is one problem with it that i have and that is that it doesnt play CD-R's which isnt nice especially if i had payed £490 instead of £200:( Hmm, my S500 plays CD-Rs. I reckon you should check that out. BTW - I think I'm going to buy an AOpen AW744 Pro so I can have the optical connection from my PC to the system.

Anyone own a Sony DVAS300 DVD Player?

Quote: Uykucu I had it, for a while, It is good all around machine and verry nicely priced. However sound does distort after a certain amount of Volume (about %50). So i bought the Pioneer one afterwards, it is very similar but a lot better and about twice the price. Now I don't have either and use seperate decks. Geez, you must have got a bad one!!! I have had mine turned up to full volume (this one goes to 40, much better than 10 ) and although I could hardly stand to be in the room, there was no distortion from any speakers at all in any sound mode. I'm really happy with my S500.

Anyone own a Sony DVAS300 DVD Player?

I got the DAVS500 and I'm very happy with it. As for the issue of seperate or combined, just like integrated motherboards, depends on what you want. I have enough devices and cables between my home entertainment and computer systems. It's all good.

    Venting here

When I was at Uni (finished last year) I told people and didn't mind fixing d*ckhead user problems. I got to keep my hand in on the practical side of the little buggers (Uni courses sometimes lack the hands on) plus occasionally you would find a little gold mine or a problem that really gave you a good challenge. These days, I work full time as a Database/Systems Admin with my local council. Given the fact that I stare at the bloody things all day working with stupid archaic databases I hardly want to deal with stupid users when I get home on my "off" time. My home computer could probably do with a re-install but I just can't be bothered. Oh and I really hate how people never tell an electrician how to re-wire a house but have no issues telling a network engineer what the problem is with a 10/100 switch. Where does the professional distinction kick in? Just because you can take the lid of a computer with a screw driver and not get electrocuted doesn't mean you know d*ck about computers!!! There's nothing like being told that your area of expertise is stupid. Aargh!! I'm done.

    AX4B-533Tube looks so cool

[size:24]I WANT ONE!!!!!!![/color] No really, I would actually prefer a stand alone daughter card. But I would love to have valve sound for my computer. One question: If they wanted to make 5.1 channel valve would they need to use one valve circuit for each of the six channels?

I didn't say it hoping to start a pi55ing contest, should've shut up. Anyhow, I only use it cause my PC sits in the same vacinity as my TV, VCR etc.
