Afternoon all, Last night when I dialled up to check email, and browse here, Fark, job sites etc I ran into some trouble. Any web page which I open, will hang about half way through loading and then IE will require a task manager kill. Now this was working fine two nights ago and then I updated my Spybot definitions. Since that update, no worky. One of the other techs at work mentioned that he had experienced the same problem and it was caused by Spybot de-registering something and he downloaded a batch file to re-create the registry entry. Sadly, he can't remember where he downloaded the file or what it is called. Thus I'm saking if anyone here has the solution. Specs of my home computer are in the sig. I'm at work now. Thanks, F.

IE Favorites: How to prevent hijacking
felix replied to PinkPanther's topic in Customization & Tweaking
You'll want to set the favourites folder to have the permissions of read only. Only leave yourself permission for "read & execute" and "list folder contents" and that should do it. Actually, removing "list folder contents" is pretty cool as it creates a black hole. -
Assign a static IP address without a network connection
felix replied to james1977's topic in Networking
If you've got a network card, you should be able to simply turn off the automatic address assignment and simply give the card a 192.168.0.x address. THen you should be able to setup comms between the two. -
Your problem is that you already setup windows on the drive and so without a RAID card, you can extend the disk. What you can do however is mount the 7gb drive as a folder off your main driver through disk management, as well as being a second drive. By this I mean your second disk is "D:\" but it could also be known as "c:\files" or "c:\games" and will appear in the tree structure of your main disk as another folder. In disk management, right click on the second drive and choose "change driver letter and paths" and then choose "add" and then mount it to an EMPTY folder on your main drive. Not as elegant as striping, but almost as effective. Is this what you are after?

winxp client + winnt4 domain server = slow initial access too mapped drives
felix replied to wingtong's topic in Networking
I experience similar problems with our network. One of our vendors mentioned a TCP timing setting on the WinNT server that gives a 50ms delay on any communication. Thus if you have that delay on every transmission (it has to scan the mapped drives when you connect) you could see this kind of delay. Sadly I didn't write down the setting as I was thinking about other things at the time, but at least you've got somewhere to start. -
If you feel comfortable navigating the registry, simply lock down the regkeys required by these settings so that only local admin or domain admin can change them. Alternatively, use policy editor to remove these tabs from display properties but you best leave it possible to up size the fonts etc if someone has sight difficulties. Reg key lock down is the best as they can't be changed.

1. how they are structured or visually represented Analog audio used to come in vinyl disc form, generally surrounded by a thin cardboard sleeve. Digital audio most commonly comes in aluminium disc form, with a plastic coating with a label on one side and surrounded by a plastic or cardboard case. 2. specific featured of each format Analog audio could be scratched, bent, broken, heat & pressure damaged but had fantastic sound quality for the first few playings. It came in tube form, 33rpm disc, 45rpm disc and the older one which I can't remember if it was 72 or 83rpm. Digital audio is read by laser and I'm not sure what speed it spins at. 3. process of converting analog to digital audio. Simple - microwave. Same as the old non-foil chip packets made great keyrings. You can shrink any vinyl disc down to fit in a CD player. And now for something completely different - http://www.google.com.au/search?sourceid...vs+analog+audio

Well the spammers who are trading any list with my Yahoo! address on it have really extracted their digit. The spam is really flying in now and given that the newest method is to make the entire message a pic to get around content filtering, some of them are getting through. Time to warm up the guns and sharpen the axes, it's time to kill me a spam monkey. Or perhaps something involving a nail-gun, 4x2 timber beam & a block and tackle would be more satisfying. Meat-hooks are so passe since the re-release of TexasCSM.

http://news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,10134129%255E15306,00.html [tongue in cheek] So now you can watch Simple Life 2, American Idol XIV, Average Joe 15, Geek Date 4, So I Married a Cow 2 and CNN at work using work computers. Ha, I like it already. [/tongue in cheek] [edit] Seems like we're going to have to get Phillip to create "joke" and/or "sarcasm" tags for use when posting. Perhaps a general "tongue in cheek" tag would be more efficient, as above. [/edit] [Edited by felix on 2004-07-15 00:26:54]

Yeah good point. Was thinking about something else that day.

Morning all, I have an interesting situation to have discussed. I own a copy of Age Of Empires II Gold edition (original and expansion) however I appear to have lost the expansion pack (Conquerers) cd in moving house, thus being inadvertant loss or damage. Now I have the original case with the set serial number and CD-Key on my desk and my question is, since I have legally purchased a license to use the software can I effectively ask the distributors to send me a replacement CD free of charge since I already own a license to use the software? Even if I had to pay postage, I should be able to get a replacement as it's not the medium I own, but a license to use the software. I mean the EULA always states that we don't own the software, but just a license to use it. However I can't use it without the CD. I could install a no-cd crack but I could not re-install without the media. On that point, I purchased a copy of the Special Edition 3 DVD "Back to the Future" pack about 2 years ago. Now the first disk has been scratched (I've never played it when drunk so I don't know how) so I'm wondering the same thing. I don't own the film, but I do own a licensed copy for personal entertainment but cannot enjoy it due to a radial scratch. Can I ask for a replacement disk? After all, I own a license, not the film. What do people think?

Here's what I got: Hello Felix, Thank you for contacting Microsoft regarding replacement media. Available replacement media can be purchased for a fee of AU$41.75 (including postage, handling & GST). To be able to order replacement media the software needs to be registered with Microsoft or you may be required to provide a proof of purchase. Please contact Microsoft Customer Service on 13 20 58 for further assistance with this matter. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8am - 8pm. Kind regards, Microsoft Employee X39745 Ha, guess I'll be burning someone else's copy (after all, I own a legal LICENSE). It would be cheaper to buy it from eBay. That's where I originally got it, and it was even in the original shrink wrapping.

www.irfanview.com is a great browser with some effects capabilities. Plus you can download about 15million plug-ins for it to play/view every media file ever invented in a drug induced haze. Is also allows you to save any file as anything else with full options.

Sounds very similar to CoolWebSearch - nasty bastard of a bit of malware.

Depends on the application. We run Win2k Pro on what we call servers but which are simply machines that interface with our plant equipment telemetry at our remote works. They run the local telemetry server SCADA software but do not require server capability and so only run Pro. Just a second opinion - however, like you all alluded to, it's only the pir8ed versions of 2k that won't accept the service packs.

I was having similar problems on a work computer and a found a file called "jushed32.exe" or similar. I stopped it and renamed it and since then, no more problems. I have a simplem rule regarding programs: "If there's no Author's information etc on the .exe when I right click on the file, it gets shut down and deleted. If they don't have the integrity to put their name on it, blow it away.

Is it necessary for website authors/owners to put the terms and coniditions of website usage on their site? What I'm getting at is rarely have I seen a site that tells me when I sign up, load up or click to that "by your entering this site you agree that any downloads you accrue through the use of this site are deemed solicited and acceptable." Surely there would be ground for a class action against spammers and pop-up merchants who force their advertisements onto our systems and therefore force the downloading of extra kbytes of data against our accounts. Consider this, if you get junk mail in your letterbox or an unwanted advertising phone call, you can tear/burn it or hang up, plus you haven't paid for it. If it comes in via e-mail or browser, in most cases you have already downloaded it before you even know it's there. Thus ISPs and consumers should have grounds for a class action claiming that unwanted advertising is actually a criminal offence (outside the Can Spam Act) due to the fact that you are being forced to pay for an unwanted, unsolicited service. Similar to the covert installation of spyware, which uses your bandwidth without your consent. What do you think?

BIO-Diesel: A great idea against rising gas costs & alternative fuel
felix replied to jmmijo's topic in Slack Space
Sweet. What are the emmisions from the engine? What mix do you use? Don't make it too profitable or the gov't will want their excise. -
BIO-Diesel: A great idea against rising gas costs & alternative fuel
felix replied to jmmijo's topic in Slack Space
Glow plugs work in conjunction with the starter motor to give the inital kick of the engine. They heat the first mix of air/fuel and allow it to explode and give the first spin of the camshaft. Diesel is far more economic than gasonline or gas so long as your injectors are clean and the mix is correct and the compression ratio is correct and it's tuesday. It's not so much about how good it is for the environment, it's just damn cheaper. If you want to know about turbo-intercooling for diesel engines, you'll need to hit the web. -

As far as I know, it will only work with diesel blocks. Diesel oil is exactly that, an oil. It is greasy, nasty stuff which sticks to everything and doesn't evaporate (as it is an oil). Whilst in normal form is is flammible (but not inflammible). It must be compressed to make to required explosive reaction. It's the compression & hot air that makes it explode, there is no spark. This is why you need higher compression for veggie oil, as it must be highly heated and compressed to be explosive. Well that's a very basic description that contains some innacuracies. This non-requirement of electric spark is why diesel engines can run, once started, without an electrical system. It self-heats the air/fuel mix and will keep running until the fuel runs out, or the engine is stopped via its stopping mechanism. I have heard about a truck that was burnt-out on the side of the highway, but the shell/engine kept running for 2 days at idle until the fuel ran out (urban myth alert). Be warned though, you need a good cooling system as the veggie oil will not explode at the lower temp of diesel and needs high compression and temp. I don't believe that the octane boost is alcohol-based, it would need to oil-based so as to not break down the oil. -

felix replied to jmmijo's topic in Slack Space
I know a bloke who does this with his diesel Toyota Landcruiser. He uses diesel to start/warm the engine, then switches to the alternate tank once the engine is running, which is full of a 10:1 mix of veggie (fish&chip) oil and an octance enhancer which you can easily buy and mix in your backyard safely. You have to switch back to diesel for the last 5 mins of engine running to put diesel back into the fuel lines. He made no substantial modifications to the engine or fuel systems as he still uses diesel for the start. If you were to use solely veggie oil, you would need to dramatically increase the compression of your engine to get the oil to fire when cold. -
Checked my Yahoo mail this morning and got a pleasant surprise: Increased storage capacity – from your current level to 100MB Increase in individual message send/receive size from 3MB to 10MB An improved layout that’s even easier to use Must say that this is quite a nice change from 6mb storage space. Next they'll be paying us to use their service.

Where the e-mails actually coming from Yahoo domains or was it that the spammers were spoofing their addresses. A few months ago I was receiving many "undeliverable" auto-responders as someone was spoofing my Yahoo address to send spam. You can't stop that happening but you could get your mail server to determine if the domain on the e-mail address matches the source domain. Where it doesn't match, can the message. ie - message from xyz@yahoo.com, originated from xx.spammachine.dodgydomain.com therefore kill die death, however if message from xyz@yahoo.com originates from xx.xx.yahoo.com then it's okay. Alternately you could find out who is sending the spam and pay them a visit to hack off their hands with a reem of paper.

Thanks for that Phillip. I'll give the "block all silently" a go.
