I can understand what the purpose of the thing is for. What annoys me is that when I block the download, this entire site basically shuts down. Is there a possible way for this to be overcome? With so many people running spy-ware blockers these days, readership of this site may take a tumble and that would be a bad thing because the people who use this site know their business and have solutions.

For me, the most annoying thing is that SpyBot tells me that "Avenue .Inc" keeps trying to download and when I tell it to politely leave my system alone, NTCompatible stops loading. Pop-ups don't really worry me as most don't get through and Pop-up2.0 (the ones that get through) can be closed off very quickly.

Hi all, I'm not really up on the latest spyware smack-down programs so I just run Ad-Aware, up[censored] it whenever an update is available. I am wondering if there are any spyware smackers that run resident like a realtime virus-scan program? I'd like to have Ad-Aware constantly running to check all files incoming and give them a digital enema, however I don't see that it has that function available. I want to use it at both work and home. Some of our users take their laptops home and you know the long story with kids/internet and complaints if you lock things down etc. The next step would be to find out who payrolls the writers of the more malicious programs and go around to their houses to have a little chat. Something along the lines of what a plunge-router or hammer-drill can do to shin bones or similar topics would be discussed. I don't have a problem with the programmers (mostly) as they need to feed their families, put fuel in the car etc, but the people who bankroll these projects need a talking too. Where will it stop? Will it be that everyone runs a dual-proc rig so that one processor does the normal work whilst the other runs real-time scanners/parsers and heuristic checkers for virii, spyware, trojans, embedded links in media files etc. On that, I'm really looking forward to digital television becoming mainstream so that reference files for digital ads can be put out so that your computer can do some pattern matching on each stream and block streams that match known advertisements. I'd much rather my computer block recurring ads for McD's etc and replace it with my acquariam screensaver for the 3.5 mins of ads every 8.5 mins. Enough rant. F

Well you can have spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, eggs, sausage and spam..... 8) ON my yahoo email I have received 400 spam in 4 days, half filling my mailbox. I'm just thank full that only 1 made it to my inbox, the rest are sitting in bulk mail. Can anyone beat this? NB. Network admins cannot claim all spam sent to their domain. Total count is per account, not total of all addresses held.

D'loaded and watched the video in the "related threads" link and I have to say that I don't think I'll play it at home alone in the dark.

Phillip, I guess the main factor determining if people actually like the new system is whether PPD (post per day) and the rate of new user registration has gone up or down. How are the usage rates. I've seen a few new names recently. I like the system as it is, especially how accessable you are about changing stuff like this "There are 33 news stories and 8 forum topics since your last visit." Same as the old "view unread posts:. Really what people seem to be rebelling against is the lack of pretty buttons and rounded, animated GIFs. If you actually look over the forum, there are not really that many operational differences as far as users go. I reckon that if you skinned the interface with s3xy looking rounded buttons and smooth lines, nobody would tell the difference. F

block users from installing stuff....but not really?
felix replied to Arin's topic in Customization & Tweaking
You need 3 partitions. - Hidden ghost image partition - System partition - Data/peronal partition Then once a week the machine automatically re-clones itself to erase the problem. We do this with the public library access machines, except they do it every day. If this isn't acceptable, install Google Toolbar for the popups, get APKs host file to kill ads etc and then fiddle with the Internet Exploiter security settings to limit ability to install sheit that comes from the web. Hope this helps. F -
RC1 is still a fancy name for BETA. You need to report this bug to Microsoft so they can decide if you are having a bug caused by the SP or by your hardware/installation/software. If it's a bug with the SP, we'll see a RC3 yet. If it's not, we might all see SP2 soon. That's the reason they release RCs, so people who register to test them can report on problems.

Phillip, I've got to say that I'm liking the "View Active Threads" options. It's great as you can see more than just the lastest posts. It's also handy if you have a cookie problem or accidentally close your browser as there's no session based reset, just a server based time frame. The colour scheme reminds me quiet a bit of DosShell from Dos6.2, that would be my only concern. Also, in the post title bar you have the author name eg "felix". What's the chance of getting "felix, senior member, 1234 posts, location" ?

I liked the "View unread posts" feature of the old board. Is it possible to get that feature back? Also, whenever I come back to the site, I am not logged in.

Can I be down for that proggy too please....or at least the list. Thanks, F -
Afternoon all, My old machine (Kremlin) had the grim reaper touch it by way of a lightning strike through the USB ISDN modem. Thus my friendly insurance company is going to give me money to buy a new machine. It will be a P4 unless someone has some major convincing power. So for you all I have these questions: ATI vs nVidia? nForce vs VIA vs Intel? which HD? (about 120gb) which burner? (DVD+RW) sound? (was using a Hercules Fortissimo III - zapped) case? Thanks for any replies.

Evening, I know this has been asked before and I did the search (no luck), but does anyone know where the logfiles for the Internal Windows Firewall are. Searched the C:\windows dir too, no luck. Thanks. F

If you run a full Win2k, XP or NT4 network, write an Access db with the following function in it to get the username and then have an "on load" sub that calls the application "net send jimbo GetUserName()". You could just write a form that autoexecs and also calls this function. Perhaps you could have the form say "You have been reported to your system administrator for violation of the email policy" You'll likely get a bucket of popups on your screen, but you'll know who it was. Function GetUserName() As String Dim LUserName As String Const lpnLength As Integer = 255 Dim status As Integer Dim lpName ' Assign the buffer size constant to lpUserName. LUserName = Space$(lpnLength + 1) ' Get the log-on name of the person using product. status = WNetGetUser(lpName, LUserName, lpnLength) ' See whether error occurred. If status = NoError Then ' This line removes the null character. LUserName = Left$(LUserName, InStr(LUserName, Chr(0)) - 1) Else ' An error occurred. MsgBox "Unable to get the name." End End If GetUserName = LUserName End Function

Just out of interest, what SCADA environment will you be running. We run Citect on the machine called Arrakis (see below) to control our water and sewer system. The OS is Win2000 server and Citect is coupled with MSDE SQL.

Well I'd like to say this. Phillip, I do find ads annoying. Having said this though, I would be willing to pay a yearly subscription fee to the site to see an ad free (or severly reduced ad level) version of the site. Not sure what amount you would think is okay - say $15/year, but I would have no issue paying that for this site as it's a great reference and source of info. Hell, I could write it off as a work expense. What does everyone else think?

I dare 'em to sue me for loading my hosts file with dummy entries.

The buzzword in today's business world is MARKETING. However, people often ask for a simple explanation of what "Marketing" actually is! Well, here it is: You're a woman and you see a handsome guy at a party. You go up to him and say, "I'm fantastic in bed" - That's Direct Marketing. You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a handsome guy. One of your friends goes up to him and pointing at you says, "She's fantastic in bed" - That's Advertising. You see a handsome guy at a party. You go up to him and get his telephone number. The next day you call and say, "Hi, I'm fantastic in bed" - That's Telemarketing. You see a guy at a party, you straighten your dress. You walk up to him and pour him a drink. You say, "May I", and reach up to straighten his tie, brushing your breast lightly against his arm and then say, "By the way, I'm fantastic in bed" - That's Public Relations. You're at a party and see a handsome guy. He walks up to you and says, I hear you're fantastic in bed" - That's Brand Recognition. You're at a party and see a handsome guy. He fancies you, but you talk him into going home with your friend - That's a Sales Rep. Your friend can't satisfy him so he calls you - That's Tech Support. You're on your way to a party when you realise that there could be handsome men in all these houses you're passing. So you stand in the centre of the street and shout at the top of your lungs, "I'm fantastic in bed" - That's Junk Mail. You are at a party, a well-built man walks up to you and gropes your breast and grabs your ass ... That's Arnold Schwarzenegger! YOU LIKE IT, BUT 20 YEARS LATER YOUR ATTORNEY DECIDES YOU WERE OFFENDED. THAT'S AMERICA

If you don't have an "Incoming Connections" connection, your machine is not waiting to receive an incoming connection from another machine, either via modem or VPN attempt. If you don't have it set up and a computer dials your modem, it won't connect. If you don't want people connecting to your machine, don't set it up. This allows people to either dial-up your machine, or access via VPN so that your machine believes you are connected via a LAN and can then do all LANny type stuff like file sharing etc. If you have no reason to have people connecting to your machine, don't set it up. You don't need this for normal LAN operation if you are connected via UTP.
-
You need to run the "Connections Wizrd" again and put it back by making a new "Accept incoming connections" connection. Then you connect to the connection in order to allow the connecting computer and the connected user to connect to test that the connection allows connection and doesn't reject the connection by dis-connecting it. Monday morning, no coffee yet.

WTF is going on with these mouse over words in posts? Are these part of some new NTCompatible advertising system or are they being done by the poster? [edit] My post seems to have nuked them thankfully!! Sorry I have no answer for your question, just needed to ask that [/edit]

Just a silly point, but wouldn't Half-Life squared actually be Quarter-Life?? I'm looking forward to this game.

Check out the failure delivery notices and look at the domains that the mail is being sent to. Then email the admins of these domains and explain the situation and ask them to tell you the address/dns the the emails are originating from. From there you can consider contacting the admins of the originating domain and tell them what is happening. If you are lucky, you/they can trace the spammer's account to an ISP or a free mail server and have that account shut down. Beyond that, I don't know.

First impressions Good: - neat & clean interface - simple to use with heaps of inbuilt help - small file size - heaps of options - does the job it states Bad: - default window size for me only showed half the buttons, had to expand window - no scantily clad women dancing instead of hourglasses - no scary user messages such as "you'll wish you hadn't done that after you reboot" Other than those minor things, nice piece of software. Need to install some junk in order to test it some more.
