Off the top of my head it sounds like you have not got enough swap space on your boot partition.. you didnt say how much space was free on your boot drive but even with 256meg of ram you need at least that amount of space for virtual memory (control panel/system/advanced/performance settings/ is where you can change it assuming you have plenty (2 or 3 gigabytes?) of space left on boot partition double your virtual memory size and reboot.. if the errors go away slowly drop the Virtual memory size back down to a more manageable size B=) for what its worth I have 384 megs of real memory and a 576 meg VM size, no problems with memory here.. heh similar situation here ran our companies web/ftp servers on linux .. switched to win2k server when rc3 came out for FTP in process of switching the webserver over to win2k now. Hopefully it will remain as stable in a "production" enviroment as it has been in testing! ------------------ Know your role and shut your mouth!--The Rock

jabbathewocket replied to jabbathewocket's topic in Hardware
well thanks guys.. first poster had the right solution. reformat reinstall, its not the master boot record, was master file table (that part at beginning of NTFS drives with index of all files in system) word of warning treat it very nicely you SOL if you hose your MFT! thanks again! ------------------ -
odd that anyone can call any build of win2k unstable.. been running it since beta 3 with not 1 OS crash, had games lock and had a nasty driver issue with keyboard and mouse but the OS has never fully locked (the machine was still acting as internet gateway for a 10 PC network!) Q: how many people who are bashing 2k complain about all the win95/98 nonsense they go through ? suggest they all go play with Millenium err Windows ME even hehe lots of luck to all who try!

heheh forgot need to put in a search bit also! btw is there any way the "forums" could be named nt applications/ 2k applications? a bit confusing at present for newcomers! list apps, apps, hardware, hardware, games, games, and german? later people

hrrm perhaps a small faq is in order? you know the basics included such as: 1) AOL is screwed under win2k - see AOL keyword beta central for latest win2k release 2) TNT drivers not quite ready for primetime yet check (current url for latest version) 3) Creative Labs Livewire for SB Live! cards not available for win2k yet, this fix may help (also with url) etc Just my 2cents worth!

Welcome to the wonderful world of bad sector based copy protection! I THINK that this is caused by a game checking for original cd in middle of game play and not finding it for whatever reason (even if it is the original cd) Odd part is i rarely (if ever) have this problem when running these games (total anhilation kingdoms, etc) from my cd burner only with elcheapo 24x anyone have any thoughts on this? just my 2 cents!

Tis true, checking the HCL first is a good idea, however it is very misleading in this (and other areas relating to usb devices) area, case in point: HP 4100cse scanner, yes it is USB, Yes drivers are provided with win2k rc2, however those drivers only work to scan in color at 150dpi, no other changes are possible, while this may be sufficient for some people it is not for others, and as to the UMAX USB scanners, all are on the HCL, but none but the 1220u will work in win2k since the device driver for the pv8630 usb device (the usb device inside the scanner) has NO win2k driver yet.. this (the pv8630) inhabits around 90% of the usb devices out there even though the device itself is win2k hardware compatible, it will never work (even if the "application" part of the driver package works in win2k) until a driver for the device class is released and can be installed sorry for the long post just my 2 cents! Jabba

I have been through the same scanner compatibility issues here.. after much testing I settled on the UMAX Astra 1220S drivers are rock solid leaving only an "unknown device" in the device manager (umax uds-11 scsi card) but no problems scanning, I also tested the HP 4100 usb which while working with win2k's builting drivers they do not provide any level of control over the scanning process ahh well good luck and let us know how it turns out!

I hope someone can answer this before i ship my monitor to the manufacturer.. I was cruising along in windows 2000 (rc2) tried to play a quick game of quake3 without much luck (graphics locked ) but system didnt, so i quit out and restarted system.. or tried to.. after power cycled .. no image on monitor! actually no activity at all! I tried to restart again after powering off everything and restarting still no luck, so i swapped my 19" for a 15" that i had laying around.. system booted fine no trouble. tried monitor on 3 other systems with no luck B( so my question is this.. anyone have any idea what can cause this behavior? or how to correct it without returning monitor? will cost me nearly 100$ to send it back to manufacturer! thanks for any help you can offer!
