Ok curious what kind of problem are yall having with the Abi

Where do I start with my problems with this board, win2k Pro, Geforce, and a vortex2. First. NO Sound in games. Sometimes I might have some sound with windows, but only once in a game did I have sound. That was GPL. But it runs like crap and just stutters. Second. My geforce card is useless too. Every game I run, the graphics stutter, I have these huge white tears flickering in the lower part of the screen. Third, Sometime windows will not shut down. It just hangs. So I have to use the power button to get anywhere. 4th. My sisoft sandra scores are very low when compared to the same results of win98se. 3200 to 2700. I have an image rendering program that I use to benchmark the OS's. This image takes 53 seconds with win2k. 43 with 98se. WTF?? Never had any problems with my 440BX board. Not a one. But with this Kt133a, it is a whole new ball game. But what is really interesting is that everything is peachy with windows98SE. I dont wannt to resort to that POS OS, but I have to to get things to work right. I am thinking somewhere there is an conflict with something. I am thinking this to be the vortex2 card maybe. Anyone??

    KT7a and win2k woes....

Well, I just went out and purchased a new Abit KT7a, 1 gig tbird, and a case. First thing I did was install win98 for the first partition, and win2k Pro on the second partition to allow for dual booting. I have also overclocked the CPU to 8.5x133 to 1133 mhz. Things are very stable at this speed for the most part. But I am running into a few errors that I cant seem to figure out at all. I am using the drivers that came on the CD, which are based off the 4.26 series Via 4in1 motherboard drivers. Here the problems, and if you know how to get around them, let me know. 1) I am assuming that there is no hope for us Aureal Vortex2 users. I have searched high and low in all of the vortex based forums for a solution. But I dont think one exists yet until MS or Via creates a fix to support a dead company. 2) Windows 2k will not shut down. I click to shut it down, it looks like everything is closing out, then it gets to where there is nothing but the default blue background showing. Then it hangs forever. I have tried two reinstalls to fix this, and nothing seems to work just yet. Thinking it might be from the overclocking of my CPU, I put it back to defaults. Still no go. I can set two ACPI modes on the BIOS. One is the S1 (pos), and the other is S3(STR). Tried both of these. Still no go. What setting am I missing, or... heck, I dont know? Any ideas anyone. I hate having to use the power button to force a shutdown of the PC down. 3)Coming from a 440BX based board, everything seemed to run faster in Win2k than win98, especially openGL 3dgames like quake3. My old scores with a celeron 850 and an Abit BH6 were around 98 FPS in win2k and 92 or so in win98. With my new PC at 1133, I am stuck at 88FPS in win2k and 117 fps in win98. What gives?? Win98 is fine, but win2k scores are very low. AGP is shown working in 4x mode when I use WPUID. This is using the Det3 6.18 drivers. 4)Last but not least, .avi files are very choppy with the new configuration. They seem to pause for a quick split second ever two seconds or so. Things worked great with the abit bh6/celeron 850 combo, which led me to favor win2k over win98. But with the problems now that I have now that I dont get in win98, it makes me wonder if I should even use win2k since it just gives me problems, especially the shutdown errors which force me use use chkdsk with each bootup. Please help me to once again enjoy Win2k!

    KT7a and win2k woes....

More to this saga I finally downloaded Win2k service pack one and the AMD4in1 drivers. And this took care of most of everything. I can now reach 107 FPS with the same settings, so that is a start. But I still get choppy MPEG performance. And still no vortex2 sound, but I think I will be forced to live with that until MS attempts to fix it.

    New OS from Microsoft?

Man, I havent posted in these forums in ages. "like Linux---it has more power than I know what to do with. I like Windows---easy, and relatively straightforward to use. I'll run them both from here on....each competing for my attention" I am in the same boat. For me, Windows2k is easy to get things going for what I need. And for my home use of it, just games and browsing the net, and maybe a 3d rendering app every now and then. But linux is like a challenge and a whole new way of doing things in a sense. At work, I have the option of using both OS's, and I use windows most of the time (our network is NT based) but for other things, I dont mind using linux.

hahaha s.hitey windows2000 - no more slow games 4 me

David, like you, I used to think that the best OS to play games on reliably was windows98SE, until something recently happened that really made me think. If you download the F1 2000 champions season demo from EA sports, try this. In windows 98se, when I head to turn one into the infield, I get some serious stutter. I also get this on the back straight. But out of curiousity, I tried it under win2k pro. NO STUTTER at all!! I was amazed. This also held true for Nascar Heat and Rally Championship. Converted for the most part. Now if I can just get a really good set of Aureal drivers to work for me to allow for A3d acceleration.

Yep, I remember that thread. Wasn't he "the best student of his student" And made thousands of dollars doing stuff (cant remember his exact words, sorry). Dumbest thing I think I have ever read on NT compatible.

    This is pathetic, mm-kay?
  11. Been using it for about two months now without any problems. The only thing I have noticed that once in a while, my desktop properties sometimes wont come up. But overall, even after disabling the file protection services, I have had no major problems like I would with windows 95.

Is this post still going on? Damn, Jdulmage, you must be really hated here. Then again, you did make that DOS install mistake awhile back if I remember. So, umm, what # post am I?

    Windows ME versus Win2k?

Me, I take the best of both worlds in a dual boot config. I like both OS's. I mostly use WinMe for most of my games. My win2k partition is for the net and everything else. The network code is just that much faster in win2k.
  14. Anyone know of a good fix for this? I have tried all of the support.Microsoft.com solutions and they do not work. Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions. BTW, I will not be able to format. ALL data on the drive has to be intact. This is a web server for a large commercial business.

Whats the big fuss on prossessor speed

JMD, going back to your original question, here is my 2 cents. Were you ever into suping up old cars when you were younger (or still doing it today)? Always pushing for a .10th of of second off at the quarter mile, running against others for the bragging right to whose car is the fastest? For us computer freaks, it is the same thing. My celeron 300A@450 was getting old, but it is still a good processor and does almost everything smoothly still. But here came the reviews of the Celeron II 566 cpu's running at 850. I had to have one. Just so I can say that now my system runs at 850. Truthfully, there wasnt that much of a gain from 450. But is a rush to see it that high for the first time. Just like breaking the 13 second barrier at the track with an old car. ------------------ Celeron II 566@700, Abit BH6, 160 RAM, Seagate Barracuda 20.4gig 7.2k rpm UDMA66, Modified Promise ultra66 turned into a Fasttrack hack, 48x Lite-on CDROM Diamond v770 tnt2 16 meg, Voodoo2 8, meg, 17"Daytek

Promise Ultra33 IDE controller and W2K?

Only one way to find out. Install the OS! I had trouble with a raid 66 card (actually an Ultra66 that I converted to a raid controller). There was a lengthy work around for it though.

cutting load time on unreal tournamnet

Yep, CUViper, I know what you mean. I like to switch often between video cards API's and that meant putting the cd in, waiting... waiting... and then a screen to pick the card I want, then more waiting... waiting... waiting... Did I mention that the cd-rom drive I had was one of those mentioned that did not like the anti-piracy means put on the cd-roms (Acer 36x). The hack, which really is bad for those of us who spent $45 for our own copies, does help so much in the load time. The CD-rom drive I had would take up to 3 minutes in some cases to start the game. So I ended up just buying a new cd-rom just to speed up UT. Pathetic, huh? ------------------ Celeron 300A@450, Abit BH6, 160 RAM, Seagate Barracuda 20.4gig 7.2k rpm UDMA66, Modified Promise ultra66 turned into a Fasttrack hack, 48x Lite-on CDROM Diamond v770 tnt2 16 meg, Voodoo2 8, meg, 17"Daytek

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

Yes, Jdulmage, you do mean to piss everyone off and start a 7 page flame war. Yes, there are some flaws in the Win2k OS, but there are flaws in all OS's. Even BeOS does support my mx300 sound card, but does not play midi. Personnally, I like win2k just so I try to get things to work. Jdul, lemme guess, when you were 9 years old (last year), when you tried to do something and weren't able to, did you cry "mommy" with tears streaming down your cheeks? Now, I really dont think you are 10 years old, with you receiving a copy of Windows ME and 2k (unless you have a mom who spoils you to death by getting you an MSDN or technet+ subscription and buys you a computer of your very own). And of course, you are the best student of your student and have made thousands of dollars doing working on computers. ------------------ Celeron 300A@450, Abit BH6, 160 RAM, Seagate Barracuda 20.4gig 7.2k rpm UDMA66, Modified Promise ultra66 turned into a Fasttrack hack, 48x Lite-on CDROM Diamond v770 tnt2 16 meg, Voodoo2 8, meg, 17"Daytek

    Windows ME

Yearout, no offense taken MSGUY, (and I hope not to offend you with this. Just my opinions) there are a few reasons for why I wont consider buying Windows Me (sorry, but that name just is to irritating. Falcon, eagle, monster, something else other than Me). One is once again that tight integration of the browser/active desktop that just eats up resources and slows things down. Hopefully, another version of 98Lite for Win ME that will fix that problem. You would think after the Anti-trust trial, this feature would be removed (making the OS a whole lot faster). Another is that Win2k Pro is such a much better choice, utilizing NTFS security and incredible stability. Microsoft is at it once again by removing support for other NOS systems such as Novell and Banyan (to force people to use Win2k pro, which is costly to the small business world. And to somehow make people use the Active Directory services instead of NDS of Novell). Another good reason is the availabilty of alternative OS's out there, most of them free. For me, Win95 still has not outgrown my needs (I just wish it would stop crashing once every so often). Win2k and Red Hat fill the gaps that win95 doesnt cover. I do agree with you that the programmers at microsoft should get paid for their work, but not for buggy software. But one features of windows 98 was to download any updates. If win Me is really nothing more than an update to win98, why are we still paying for a whole new upgrade? If Microsoft was to change the name into something more "ballsy" and was to remove the active desktop/web intergration to speed up the OS, I would actually consider buying this product. But for now, I dont see myself wanting a slower OS that win2k pro can easily replace. ------------------ Celeron 300A@450, Abit BH6, 160 RAM, Seagate Barracuda 20.4gig 7.2k rpm UDMA66, Modified Promise ultra66 turned into a Fasttrack hack, 48x Lite-on CDROM Diamond v770 tnt2 16 meg, Voodoo2 8, meg, 17"Daytek
  23. After going round and round trying to get any version after 3.66 working and ending up in black screen, I finally tried something in the bios. I just set everything to the default setting and just redid the processor settings and disabled the serial ports (using ps2 for now). And finally it worked. I dont know what exactly was changed in the bios to allow for the 5.13 detonator drivers to work properly and I am hoping someone else on the board can answer this. But the drivers are very good and has restored my interests in using win2k again. ------------------ Celeron 300A@450, Abit BH6, 160 RAM, Seagate Barracuda 20.4gig 7.2k rpm UDMA66, Modified Promise ultra66 turned into a Fasttrack hack, 48x Lite-on CDROM Diamond v770 tnt2 16 meg, Voodoo2 8, meg, 17"Daytek

    Windows ME

Yearout, I did test it a bit and yes, it runs more stable than my win95 partition, but slower. Of the win9x OS's, I prefer win95 above the others just for the shear speed of it (nevermind the crashing part, which only happens so very often). What I meant by not paying for it is that with win2k professional out, and other much more stable OS's out for free, win ME is just not worth the money that MS is going to charge for it. It should just be released as some fix for free to windows98. But you know MS wants your money and people will pay for the OS.
  25. Here is my work machine. C: drive-winnt 40 server, d:-technet cd image, e: -zip drive, f:-win2k server partition, g: -cdrom Boot.ini is set for win2k and winnt40 dual boot. Would like to change it to a win95/win2k dual boot setup. How do I do this safely and not mess any settings to the win2k partition (utmost importance!!!). Win95 setup will usually set the boot up to an msdos.sys type of boot up instead of the ntldr load up. How do I change this back. ERD disks give you the option to change this? And what do I edit the boot .ini file so that it gives me the option to boot to window. I think it is c:\windows, but not too sure. I would like to hear from someone who has done this before and what I can expect to run into during the process. Thanks for the replies in advance.
