Enable 2 CPUs without reloading Win2k?
Impala SS replied to Rimmy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Choose the MPS or ACPI Multiprocessor HAL. ACPI Multiprocessor might give you some problems so choose MPS Multiprocessor if you want the least hassle. -
I'm impressed that RC 2.5 remotely even works. I expected repeated crashes using it, but so far I haven't experienced nothing like that.

I think I.E 5.x is the cause, as well. Remember, the IE shell is intergrated into Win 98. It could be that the upgrade to I.E 5.x from I.E 4.x is the cause of the possible corruption of the text.

hahaha s.hitey windows2000 - no more slow games 4 me
Impala SS replied to DavidNewbould's topic in Slack Space
David. You forgot compatibility for Win 98. I'm doing something similar like David so I get the best of both world's, though I'm not sure of faster gaming performance under my OS and system combo. I only installed Win 98 just to be compatible so I can play games. All other stuff including web surfing is done under Win 2000. The only difference between mine and his OS setup is that I'm loading OS's off different drives. HDD0 Windows 2000 Pro /w NTFS. (20 gig) HDD1 Windows 98 /w FAT 32 (13 gig) HDD0 Boot drive. All programs go here minus games. HDD1 Games only. -
The same thing happened to me when I installed Japanese language support under Windows 2000 (US-English). Some programs would display the garbled text, but would properly display the characters in some other program. Go to Control Panel--> Regional Settings and make sure the correct language is checked. Under Outlook or IE go to View-->Encoding-->More and try the different options that encode the Japanese language correctly. Make sure you are at a Japanese web site so you can be sure which method will correctly the language. Are you using a Japanese version of Windows or did you enable J-language on an foreign version of Win?

Here's my take... Win 2000 is strong at stability, but not so good at compatibility. Win 9x is vice versa. I used to hate Win 9x after switching to NT/2000. Only until, recently did I come to appreciate the compatibility of Win 98. For me there is, no point in using 98 SE or ME if Win 98 works for what I need and Win 2000 is ready to go. Whats da best recommended firewall or anti-virus for my serv
Impala SS replied to Seducer's topic in Software
IMO, put the firewall and anti-virus on the server and then anti-virus software on the workstation. For best results both firewall and anti-virus should be used on all computers. I'm refering to software based firewalls in the above statement. In my setup, the Linksys router is used for NAT/firewall for my network. Since the computer used to post this response downloads many files from the net a software firewall and anti-virus is used. I use Tiny Personal Firewall and VirusScan 5.1 on Win 2000 Pro (beta SP-2). -
Not much of a gamer, but I still like to have fun Half-Life (CS and FA mods installed) Need for Speed 3:HP (It works without the patch provided by NT compatible.) Using SP-2 Beta. [ January 01, 2001: Message edited by: Impala SS ]

No, there is no support for USB under NT unless the maker of the USB device creates USB support for NT and the driver itself. Wait for Windows 2000 if you need USB support.

For those that are experiencing trouble with games and Win NT. Do yourself a favor and install Win 9x, the games will work, Direct X will work, and finally all your problems will 'disappear'. I'm sure you will be able live w/o the extra processor. I plan to use a dual boot combo for those games that don't work under NT.
