Does the win2k-drivers from 3dfx suck or is it just win2k?
jonny replied to Turbo Grunkamoj's topic in Games
Its the drivers. Tests have been performed. The voodoo3 drivers for win2k are slow. Maybe its opengl specific dunno but I defenitely the drivers. I dont have the exact thread and I dont feel like looking it up but there was tests performed on this and on a box with a voodoo3 & win98 was about 10-14 fps faster than the same box with win2k. They replaced it with a tnt or some card I forgot which and it beat out win98. So that means its the drivers. If anyone really wants Ill try and dig up the thread. -
Native drivers were in win9x so they should be in win2k also. Actually I just posted this to agree with yuppiescum because i have that same card and it does suck. In fact I hate that card. Upgrading should be #1 priority for you. Even if you have to fast for a month. j/k

If your looking for smp support dont get a voodoo3. Plus the drivers arent that good either. Supposedly the tnt cards made good drivers for win2k and actually outperform win98. Plus smp support. Thats my 2 cents.

Plus if your a monopoly theres no competition. Hence microshaft can overprice their os's. But ms isnt the worst of tyrants.

NEW VIA DRIVERS OUT, 4IN1 VERSION 4.20 AND AGP VERSION 4.00
jonny replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
These drivers are not for windows 2000! Do not attempt to install any drivers from via for windows 2000. The only drivers that are at work for windows 2000 from via currently are usb drivers. -
God no man! None of them. First of all I believe win2k comes with via agp & busmaster already. Those win9x drivers are very sensitive dont install them to windows 2000. In fact I dont think they even will let you. Via said they would have windows 2000 drivers available when win2k came out but they havent yet.

Hey all you guys with harddrive experience. I actually havent had a harddrive long enough to actually test this but I was wondering what happens when its used alot. I myself am constantly moving data around and reformatting. Plus I dont have much ram right now so it is swapping constantly. Does this degrade the drive? how long will it last? I have a 14 gig western digital drive. How tough are they?
-
Im not sure but it might be that you need a certain percentage of free drive space. Like 15% or something. So if you have like a 30 gig drive 2 gigs wont be enough.
-
I use it. I think its really good. Although I recommend doing it after you have defragged already. In other words dont do it when its heavily fragmented. Directory's in win2k cant be defragged while running thats the purpose of the boottime defrag. I think its good to do it every now and then. My system seems to run really good after it. Plus sometimes if your directory's arent defragged you cannot fully defrag your drive.

I for one like to reformat. Its like Im used to it and I get a fresh system to work with and play with without any problems. Lately I havent reformatted. I dont think I will be reformatting for awhile . Everything works dammit! It still feels like a new system and it hardly ever crashes. I dont think Ive had a crash in like a week anyway. I remember a couple of times I got a crash in ie5 but that has disappeared or is rare or something. Im getting some more ram in this sucker and Ill be set. Actually no I wont. I need to get a new motherboard that supports dual and get a couple of new cpu's to put in there. Then Ill be set. Win2k kicks ass baby!!!!!

Only time I reboot is when installing drivers or a diskeeper boot time defrag. Ive been up for 3 days or something now I dont count. I never have to reboot because of crash or malfunction. Oh no.

Yeah shrink your right. The speeds are "liv-able". But screw that. Im not going for substandard. Why am I unhappy right now? Because they didnt make **** kickass and thats what I expect. I want the best. Or at least something decent. These drivers are not decent. They are "liv-able" A test was done on quake3 recent with a tnt on win98 and then win2k and the tnt was about 7 frames faster in win2k. The same test was performed with a voodoo3 and the win2k retail drivers. win98 was about 12 frames faster than win2k. With the same machine of course. I havent performed a test myself but I know I used to get better then 35.1fps which is what I get now with the sucker fully tweaked out for maxium fps. If you wanna check out the thread at 3dfxgamers win2k vs win98 in q3a here it is. http://www.3dfxgamers.com/boards.asp?BOID=11&THID=30774&boardsort=lastpost&boardpage=141 Yeah forgot the voodoo2 users. They should have smokin' drivers too. No excuse.

Dont get me wrong I am not complaining...this is not meant to be a flame. I for one was not complaining when the drivers werent out yet. I was telling everyone to be happy with the betas and hacked ones until 3dfx released the official ones which would be sometime around the 17th. Ok they are here now. And I do have a problem with them. They are slow. Win2k is a great os and is capable of alot better. I want some drivers that rock. I waited patiently and it seems like they just through some betas at me and said here shut up. I really hope they plan on making better drivers. Hopefully with smp support. I just hope they update them. 3500 users have to wait 2 months! What are they doing? Developing v4 v5's? I for one choose not to buy from a company that doesnt support there current products. Its just kindof ****ty that Im probobly going to have to boot a win98 machine so I can get better performance. Which I am not going to do. I need to buy another card. Im a little bitter at 3dfx so guess it wont be from them. Even if the v5's are the fastest p.o.s there is.

I have tekram mvp3 board How long does it freeze during the hardware detecting process? I remember mine froze in the middle but it wasnt actually froze. I waited for awhile. maybe 5 mins and it kept going.
