I've been a loyal "reader" of NTCompatible.com since it's true NT days - back when we were really trying to get games to run under NT 4.0 workstation or NT 4.0 server. I usually check NTCompatible.com every weekday just to see what reviews might be new on the internet or for other hardware news. That said - my visits to NTCompatible.com are going to stop. Why? These #$%@#$%#@W Pop Up Ads that somebody at NTCompatible.com has fallen in love with - just in the past month it seems. I don't mind *rewarding* a web site that I visit almost religiously with a clicked link every once in a while (as I have done for NTCompatible.com in the past), but when someone decides that I HAVE to go to some advertising site, I will and am stopping my patronage to that site. You can go ahead and delete this user account for I will not visit NTCompatible.com or use it again.

Well. That's one way to kill this thread... Start discussing stuff like Linux v. Win2k. I liked this thread more when it just had inane comments....

Hey! jd! You got your senior member status back... (and all those posts!) Not that you were crying over it - and not that it means anything... Later!

What?!?!? No replies/posts in almost a full day. We're slowing down here! BTW, did anyone check out that site I mentioned for some funnies? ( http://www.cardhouse.com/drcliff/garage/tech/techsupport.htm ) Later!

concerning the www.cusl2.com and answering there... been there, done that (answering more than asking...), got tired of the SAME #@$^%@#%^ questions. I do love this cusl2 though. [edit] Ahem, for some comic relief, just visit this site: http://www.cardhouse.com/drcliff/garage/tech/techsupport.htm Later! [This message has been edited by ByronT (edited 28 October 2000).]

Shoot, if ya got banned for that, then there's a bunch more out there that should be banned tooo! [edit] "posting of things that I shouldn't have posted".... If that was why, then INFERNO should have been dumped around his 50th post, I mean all he posts are STOOOOPID questions about his CUSL2 beast, and questions about how to build a computer.... [and to INFERNO ] Welcome back, JD... Later. [This message has been edited by ByronT (edited 27 October 2000).]

Oh well, I was looking at ordering ten or so of them. (The distributor has 176 in stock!) BTW, your on-board ATA100 might max at 39MHz, but I had a Promise Ultra100 running on a bus speed of 41.5MHz - without any hd problems.... How many pages is this post up to? [edited] Did you see my post about the PCI extender card that will turn your PCI slots sideways? I've got the information on the cards somewhere around here (I'm in the process of building two rackmount servers with RedHat and the CUSL2.) Later! Isn't if funny how anyone who goes flame crazy and then is called *on the carpet* per se, they then recant and pronounce that it was all done for fun, and in sarcasm, and "I didn't mean it", and I did it "to liven up things a little." Well, here's what I think: Write what you think, when you think it, and if caught in a lie, or untenable position, or as a flamer, suck it up and admit what you've done, THEN SHUT THE CRAP UP. (I would have said something else, but I did not *think* it was appropriate.) ------------------ J. Byron Todd Computer Consultant byron@toddcomp.com Todd Computer Solutions

HEY INFERNO, you've got that ThermalTake Golden Orb right? Well, ThermalTake um, er, Microsofted (Microsofted = to steal an idea without it being called "theft", like algoring = to tell a lie without it being called a "lie" )the design from HP (what Agilent used to be...) And from all accounts, the Arcticooler is a better cooling HSF than the Golden Orb. (By a few degrees in all the reviews I've seen.) Have you checked out that site yet?
-
INFERNO, a couple of companies build a PCI-extender type card that turns two PCI slots sideways (in a L shape.) AFAIK, they were made to allow generic motherboards to be used in 2U rackmount cases. Maybe you could find one of those instead. [And HEY, I've added three posts to this superly long post already!] DOH! I can't count... make that four! [This message has been edited by ByronT (edited 27 October 2000).]

Oooooh, I just found out that you have to "burn-in" the ArctiCooler HSF - or it won't cool properly. The way that Agilent describes it being done is by putting a pencil in the fan area, booting the computer into the BIOS and then waiting until the CPU temp reaches approx 65 degrees C, and then removing the pencil... Cooooool.

Did jdul really go? Dang, and after I found this... INFERNO, I went to that site [VirtualHideout...] and it gave me some ideas about doing some case mods. My programmer and I are working on the ideas and will be setting up a website to handle sales. And as an additional note, I have finally been able to track down [from a distributor] the Agilent Arctic Cooler HSF (that the ThermalTake Golden Orb is based on). Check it out at http://www.arcticooler.com. Anyone who might be interested in one of these? [edit] Had to fix the URL link... [This message has been edited by ByronT (edited 27 October 2000).]

Amazing. I didn't even know that this thread was alive! So this is where INFERNO has gone since he stopped bugging us with his CUSL2 and case questions! Just another post to another useless thread! ------------------ J. Byron Todd Computer Consultant byron@toddcomp.com Todd Computer Solutions

It took a little while (as well as some progression into the late afternoon hours...) but now my motherboard temp is 68-69 degrees F. CPU is still hovering around 84 degrees F. No funny stuff, no problems. Computer is acting normal. Sorry, INFERNO but if ya got a problem, it's YOUR problem (not mine!) As for how my comp gets this cool: Easy, 1) Intel = runs at least 20 degrees CPU temp cooler. 2) Ambient temp = allows great cooling of computer but only when combined with... 3) Four high output 80mm fans (4200 RPM). Two blowing in on the side - one on top of the PCI slots, one deflected to the side of the CPU (when blowing directly on top of CPU, it slowed the CPU fan down by 200 RPM.) Two blowing out - one above the ATX I/O bracket, and one in front of the PCI card slots. The two blowing in are pushing so much air that the two blowing out are over-revved to 4800 RPM. Quite chilly, and heat-free (as well as lockup free here.) [This message has been edited by ByronT (edited 12 October 2000).]

Hmmmm... I'll have to crank the AC down to get my ambient temp low enough to cause my computer to drop to that temp. I'll let you know if I see anything screwy. Currently, with the CUSL2, BIOS 1002 Final, PC Probe 2.12.02, I have these temps: Ambient: 64-68 degrees F. (Not sure, no accurate temp guage nearby... using a Galileo therm.) Motherboard: 71 degrees F. (Lowest I've ever had it, and highest has been around 74 degrees F.) CPU: 85 degress F. (Ranges from 84-104 with a quirky 110 that I saw about three days ago - typically stays around 90 degrees F.) Later! (I wear a sweater or a pullover at all times in my office....)

Then let me restate what I intended for you to understand: External IDE controllers look like SCSI devices to the motherboard. Therefore, if I add my Promise Ultra100 and connect a CDROM drive with a bootable CD in it, and ensure that the Ultra100 is enumerated before any other SCSI-like device, AND tell the BIOS to boot of SCSI or other first, then the system will boot off the bootable CD. Tested and used in my previous system and motherboard, a Tyan Tomahawk BX (S1856 model) computer system. Did that help? Now, concerning the Intel ATA drivers - they show the Ultra ATA devices as SCSI because of how Microsoft *identifies* SCSI devices. But that's primarily OS related, not hardware related. -

I booted off one of my Plextor CDs connected to my Adaptec 2930CU to install Win2K with my CUSL2. (Although I had to disconnect the other two CD drives = Adaptec Bug = bootable CDs only work if the CD is a lone CD drive on the SCSI chain.) HTH. ------------------ J. Does anyone else get the feeling that INFERNO has WAY TOO MUCH time on his hands? That he spends too much time on the way his PC looks - like some do with their car (at least the car will last more than a year or two...) I'm just messing with ya, INFERNO. I had to show all my buddies my case after I modified it with the two fans in the side of it. Do let me warn you with the plastic face plates - you get the wrong type of paint, and you'll start to have face plates that are melting. As an alternative (for next time), why don't you look into getting a short equipment rack (some are 48")? And then you can get you a cooooool 4U (or even 5U) rackmount case, that you can setup with hot-swap harddrives, and redundant power supplies? Check out the rackmount equipment offered by Enlight and Antec (though Enlight's is better.) Later!

Well, Biatche... I am running Win2K, and I've been running it since RC2 - and with the exception of problems related to a previous motherboard, I have had ZERO issues with the MX300 and Win2K. I do play games - though it's been a while since I played UT or Q3 - and I didn't experience problems there either. Bottom line: MAKE YOUR BLANKET STATEMENTS ELSEWHERE. (I don't like being presumed stupid (what OS are you running) or being spoken for.) And as far as the SB Live goes, you can search the threads here and find as many, if not more problems with SB Lives and various configurations (as well as various drivers.)

Just buy one of those mini-refridgerators - and then you won't need a stinking fanbus. (And it'd probably be cheaper!) You do realize that no matter what kind of system you build, it will be obsolete (in terms of latest/greatest) in approximately 6 months. Make that 2 weeks... -
Here's the *trick*: The Diamond Viper V770 is configured to AGP 4X by moving all four jumpers from their defaults. (My Viper V770 is running AGP 4X). On jumper J4, move the jumper to the B-C position (it's marked A-B-C.) Also note, that B-C are the lower positions on the three pin jumper. And move the jumpers on J1, J2, and J3 to the closed/jumpered position. That's it. You do that, and if your motherboard is capable (and you're not OCing [OCing on some boards = automatic drop to 2X]), then you should be able to get AGP 4X. Uh, don't forget to check your BIOS to see if it limits the AGP bus to 2X or 4X (I had to enable 4X capability in the motherboard BIOS.) HTH. ------------------ J. ByronT replied to INFERNO2000's topic in Hardware
I'll answer a few questions here: First, the iPanel does not take a slot - it only sits in the front of a slot. So it can be in front of a device that doesn't need a faceplate opening - such as a hard drive. Second, PC Power and Cooling makes some of the highest rated power supplies in the business - also note that they're more expensive. But in terms of quality, of the 100 or so ATX power supplies that I've dealt with, I've had Enlights fail on me, SuperMicros fail on me, and Antecs fail on me. But I have never had a PC Power and Cooling Supply fail on me. http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com Third, the only downfall of the above PSes is that they're *only* 10 Amp - and you really need a 12 Amp PS for the fun stuff like Peltiers.... (Not that I overclock, or run Peltiers... - I've got a 933, I don't need no stinking overclock... Later! -

Does this mean that you royally screwed up the side of your case trying to cut that 120mm fan hole? Just go buy a Tornado 2000 from http://www.3dcool.com. It's tall, it's roomy, and it already has the fans in it. Later. ByronT <- questioning if INFERNO ever stops in his quest for bigger/better/faster!
