The only game I had that I could not get to work under Windows 2000 Professional at all was Slave Zero, and I got rid of that game long ago. I guess I am saying that I do not plan to try the compatibility modes. :-)

Installing Take Two with the new updates from Roxio
michaeljbrooks replied to Bennybone's topic in Software
I installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 with all options including Take Two a few weeks ago on my two home computers running Windows 2000 Professional and did not have any problems with the reported 'Blue Screen of Death' as reported by some people. I have not actually backed up anything with Take Two yet but I started it up after I heard about the reported problems to see if there would be any errors, with no problems encountered. I do plan to update to 5.01 before actually backing up anything with Take Two though. -
I have recently been playing with Mozilla, the open-source browser effort. I tried Netscape 6.0 and 6.01 which are based on an earlier version of Mozilla, 0.6, but was unhappy with some deficiencies and stability problems. The latest Mozilla, 0.8, naturally is like Netscape 0.6 and has some stability problems but seems a little more functional than Netscape 6.0x on a few Web pages. Apparently Mozilla 1.0 is supposed to be the first 'production' release and will be released later this year. http://www.mozilla.org

I downloaded one of the Mozilla 0.8.x nightly builds from March 20 and am using it now. There are still bugs, but now it is the fastest browser I have ever used on my slow dial-up modem connection.

Does Windows 2000 come with a default aspi driver?
michaeljbrooks replied to Cardinal's topic in Software
Under Windows 2000 Professional I have noticed that even when I have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and Ahead Nero 5.x installed that aspi files are not installed where they are accessible to programs like CDRWin 3.x and cause errors. I had to use the forceaspi utility to install the aspi files that CDRWin could use. -
I was dual-booting Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 SE until I re-formatted my hard disk drive and installed Windows 2000 Professional as my only operating system in March 2000. I have not regretted my decision. In general, Windows 2000 Professional has all the advantages and none of the disadvantages of Windows NT 4.0 if the software and device drivers that you require will function under Windows 2000 Professional. If you disable Windows File Protection, the device driver installation problems are not too bad either.

This topic comes up all the time on the ABIT news group. You can use any 66 or 100 MHz FSB processor mounted in the ABIT BX6-Revision 2 motherboard that will fit, even with slotket adapters. However, ABIT quit up[censored] the BIOS at revision QR (which is what I use) so the BIOS does not recognize and automatically configure the settings for newer processors so if you use one of those you have to set up the BIOS settings manually. The highest Celeron that the QR BIOS recognizes is 600 MHz, so when I use a 633 MHz Celeron with a MSI slotket in my BX6 Revision 2 motherboard I have to set the parameters manually. The voltage does set automatically for Celeron 2 and Pentium III processors so it will not cause problems on initial setup.

There is no question that Mozilla 0.8 is still somewhat unstable, which is why I only use it as a supplement to Internet Explorer 5.x at this time. Even the developers of Mozilla say that Mozilla 1.0 will be the first stable 'production' release. I encourage users of Mozilla who have a high-speed Internet connection to download the larger 'talkback' version of Mozilla that automatically sends feedback on errors to Mozilla.org when Mozilla abends.
-
I think that supplementing Internet Explorer under Windows is how I would describe my usage of Mozilla 0.8 also. Mozilla 0.8 is not stable enough for all-around use yet (especially PSM), but it seems to be a little better than Netscape 6.0x as I mentioned earlier. Because up[censored] Internet Explorer seems to be in my experience the only way to hose up Windows 2000 bad enough to have to re-install Windows 2000, I try to just use another browser when Internet Explorer does not do what I want.

I am pretty good at getting rid of unwanted installed applications from Windows 2000 Profesional Service Pack 1, but I still cannot get rid of the listing of Diskeeper 5.03.340 trial version in the 'Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs' on my home system. The message I get when I try to remove the program with the remove program function is 'Diskeeper Workstation can only be installed on Windows Professional. Setup will now exit' and then 'Fatal Error during installation'. I then deleted all references to Diskeeper and Executive Software from the registry and deleted all the Diskeeper files I could find from my computer but the entry remains in 'Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs' and gives the same error when trying to remove the program listing. I also tried re-installing the program and uninstalling it again (with all the same registry and file cleaning) with similar results. I can install Diskeeper 6 which adds another entry but I can never get rid of the original Diskeeper entry. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the bothersome defunct listing without re-installing Windows 2000 Professional?

I am running Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 1. I installed Netscape Communicator 6.01 a few days ago, and periodically experience a 'freeze' with a hundred percent CPU usage when I have more than one Netscape window open. Usually this seems to happen immediately after selecting a link in an open Web page. I do not remember having this particular problem ever with Netscape 6.00. Is this just a bug with Netscape 6.01?

When Windows 2000 was released I tried McAfee VirusScan with bad results, and then it took many hours to try to uninstall it from my system. I would not even try to install a McAfee product under Windows XP.

Have you sold the RAM already? I am trying to get all PC133 RAM so I can swap in any machine, but I might be interested in a 256 MB PC100 DIMM for my computer with a Celeron in it if the price was low enough, maybe $55 or so. Is the 256 MB PC100 DIMM an ECC version? michaeljbrooks@MailAndNews.com

The Lexmark 1000 printer is similar to the Lexmark 1100 in that Lexmark is never going to release a Windows 2000 driver for it. I have a Compaq IJ200 printer which was bought cheap for a few bucks a few months ago on impulse which is made by Lexmark for Compaq and is similar to the Lexmark 1100. My Compaq IJ200 printer will never have a Windows 2000 driver either, so I am giving it to my mom for Christmas to use with her computer that runs Windows 95. When mom runs out of ink, the IJ200 printer will be given to Goodwill. That is the last Lexmark printer I will buy, even if they are practically free.

My operating system is Windows 2000 Professional. I am thinking of buying a used Temujin game which only says it works with Windows 95. The game is no longer sold but it is described at http://www.southpeak.com/ Does anyone know if this game will work under Windows 2000 Professional?
-
I finally bought a copy of Temujin off ebay and installed it successfully under Windows 2000 Professional. After I inserted the first CD-ROM the game auto-installed and played fine. The game auto-installs all files to c:\ drive with no user options, but all the files together only consist of a few kilobytes; much less than one megabyte. Almost all the game play is done off the six CD-ROM discs supplied with the game. The game plays like Myst. I was a little disappointed with the quality of graphics, but they were good for a 1997 game I suppose. I submitted the successful result to the NT Compatible list at this site.

There are beta Windows 2000 drivers for all Aureal Vortex cards. Since Aureal went bankrupt and Creative Labs bought them, the Aureal Web site is not very well maintained. I always go to http://www.vortexofsound.com to get the latest Aureal news and drivers. David is not up[censored] the http://www.vortexofsound.com Web site too often these days, but the message board is active.

I installed the newly-released final version of Netscape 6.0, and was going to download the plug-in for Macromedia Shockwave at http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/frameset.fhtml? but saw the warning at that page: ATTENTION NETSCAPE 6 USERS: Shockwave Player does not currently function satisfactorily in Netscape 6. Macromedia and Netscape are actively working to resolve the outstanding issues. As an alternative, Macromedia recommends use of an earlier version of the Netscape browser.

I tried to use the SafeWeb page at https://www.safeweb.com/ to access Web pages with SSL interface and got the following error consistently: ------------------ Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Invalid URI in request GET /_s%3Adummyframe.html HTTP/1.1 Apache/1.3.12 Server at www.safeweb.com Port 443 ---------------------- I reported the error to the Netscape 6 problem reporting page. Netscape Communicator 4.76 and Internet Explorer 5.5 do not have this problem.

The description on the PC Chips site was not too detailed, but the integrated sound may be from an Aureal chipset. If so, possibly later drivers from http://www.vortexofsound.com might help the sound.
-
Usually the latest URL to download the Aureal Vortex 2 WDM driver that was not supposed to be released is posted in the message forum at http://www.vortexofsound.com Currently the URL is http://www2.stas.net/6/a3dfan/

I finally sold my Slave Zero game because it was incompatible with Windows 2000 even using the usual tricks. The other couple dozen or so games I have work fine with Windows 2000.

Unfortunately it seems that Lexmark is not going to make available any Windows 2000 drivers for the Lexmark 1100 printer. Compaq sells some roughly equivalent printers that they buy from Lexmark, and the Lexmark drivers are sometimes interchangeable. My Compaq IJ200 printer is apparently the rough equivalent to the Lexmark 1100 printer, and there are no Windows 2000 drivers for my Compaq IJ200 printer either.

Since Windows 2000 Professional is working well for me, I do not plan to change to Whistler until it is a released product.

ATA-100 with 2000Professional
michaeljbrooks replied to Chernobyl's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I see they posted the ftp://hotfix.microsoft.com/winnt/Windows_2000/sp2/Q260233/Q260233_ENU_i386_zip.exe link over at the cusl2 drivers forum, but they said that the zip file is password protected. Since I have no real need for ATA-100 right now, I plan to wait until Service Pack 2 to Windows 2000 before I worry about it.
