Wanna download all of Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1?
michaeljbrooks replied to DosFreak's topic in Software
Thanks for the tip. I always download all the files for an update and burn them to CD-RW so I am sure I never need to download them again. -
Since I have always used DiskKeeper 5.03.340 for Windows 2000 Professional defragmenting with no trouble, I do not have anything else with which to compare.

Do you have all the game software patches applied? I think this is especially true if you are using a video card with an nVidia chipset. Below is the 'readme' from the RivaTNT patch. --------- Final Fantasy v. 1.01 Readme This patch is intended to fix the problem users have had with the Riva 128, Riva 128 ZX, and Riva TNT video cards. This patch also enables the "ESC" key in the name menus that laptop users have not been able to leave because they have no numeric keypad. Note: There will still be some graphics corruption when the player casts the spells Odin Steel Bladed Sword and Escape. Riva and Square are continuing to look at ways to correct this. URGENT NOTE: If you have already installed the Cyrix patch for Final Fantasy 7, DO NOT APPLY THIS PATCH. Your game will not function if you do. If you already applied this patch then you need to uninstall and reinstall the game. Then reapply the Cyrix patch. Instructions: By default this patch will extract to the Desktop. You need to copy both FF7Config.exe and Final Fantasy 7.exe to the directory on the hard drive that the game is installed to. (Usually c:\program files\square soft\final fantasy. Before you run the game you need to run the Final Fantasy 7 Configuration and select the Graphics configuration tab. Set the Display to Primary Display, check the Riva box that is below the Resolution area of the dialogue box and then set Render to 3D hardware. If you have problem with the patch or the game after installing the patch please send e-mail to techsupp@eidos.com with the subject of RIVA PATCH PROBLEMS. You can also call our Technical Support in the U.S. at 415-547-1244. Our office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. pacific time Monday through Friday. 9/21/98

At the bottom is my inquiry to the support group at Southpeak. Above my inquiry is the Southpeak response. The short answer is that nobody knows whether Temujin will run under Windows 2000. ------------------- Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 11:55:53 -0800 From: southpeak_support@aqinc.com Subject: In response to your question about Temujin, your customer number is 743495 To: michaeljbrooks@MailAndNews.com X-Mailer: Blat for Vantive v0 Hello, That title is no longer in print, and technical support is no longer available for that product. Best Regards, Paul G. at Southpeak Interactive Support southpeak_support@aqinc.com ----------------------- Your F.A.Q. says Temujin will run under Windows 95/98/Windows NT (NT users need service pack 2 or later). Will Temujin run under Windows 2000 Professional?
-
I browsed the http://www.southpeak.com/ site for a while and found a F.A.Q. that said that Temujin was supported under Windows NT with Service Pack 2 and later. I sent an electronic message to the Southpeak support center asking about Windows 2000 compatibility, but they may not be too supportive of games they are not selling any more.

The only time I have this problem with Descent 3 running under Windows 2000 is when I enable the proprietary 3D sound interfaces in the Descent 3 launcher. Specifically the problem occurs when I try to use EAX with SoundBlaster Live sound cards or A3D with Aureal sound cards. If I just enable DirectSound 3D in the Descent 3 launcher everything works smoothly.

For Sale: AccelSTAR II AGP 8 MB graphics card $40
michaeljbrooks posted a topic in Buy, Sell or Trade
I bought a couple of relatively high-end graphics cards for my two home computers and now have a surplus O.E.M. Evans & Sutherland AccelGraphics AccelSTAR II AGP 8 MB graphics card for sale. The card uses the 3DLabs Permedia 2 chipset which is intended for CAD and professional graphics but will work okay for games. Windows 2000 drivers are included on the Windows 2000 CD, and other drivers are available for download from http://www.3dlabs.com/drivers/dpermedia.asp Apparently Linux drivers for the Permedia 2 cards are included with almost all Linux distributions. I will pay U.S.P.S. shipping within the United States. I will take a personal check for $40 and ship the card after the check clears. A money order for $40 gets the card shipped immediately. Contact me at michaeljbrooks@MailAndNews.com -

The NT 4.0 software has been sold to a local buyer. -
I read that there is a utility to uninstall the beta DirectX 8 at http://www.dvd-digest.net/downloads/files/dxuninstaller10.zip I did not install DirectX 8 myself so I cannot comment on functionality.

Sorry I am not willing to give up my I/O Magic SQ2500. I will make you a good deal on an I/O Magic MagicSound PCI (Aureal Advantage chipset) card though. The MagicSound PCI does reasonable A3D sounds with headphones, but does not have rear speaker output jacks for four-channel sound like the SQ2500. I will even pay shipping and take a personal check for $15. If interested contact michaeljbrooks@MailAndNews.com

The only game I own that will not run under Windows 2000 at all is Slave Zero. I did have to use 'setwin95' to get Myst Masterpiece Edition to run under Windows 2000 though.

Full Tower Owners (especially SuperMicro 750 or 760) please
michaeljbrooks replied to INFERNO2000's topic in Hardware
I have owned a SC750A with included Sparkle 300 watt power supply since February 1999 and I like it. I only have three of the six 5.25 inch bays filled though so it is really bigger than I need. I bought an InWin Q500 full tower with included 300 watt power supply for a second computer system which is slightly smaller with five 5.25 inch bays, cheaper, and more practical for a home computer. I recommend that you find the best deal on any computer case with a Web retailer like http://www.mychaseshop.com or http://www.onvia.com where you can get free shipping since full tower cases are heavy. -
I do not seem to have a problem with the I/O Magic MagicVideo TNT2-M64 AGP 32 megabyte video card mounted in an ABIT BX6-Version 2 motherboard using the Detonator 3 drivers running Windows 2000 Professional. I have 96 megabytes of RAM currently installed. I did flash the BIOS in the video card a few months ago with the files and instructions from http://zoiah.m3dzone.com/, but I was not having any problems before I did the flash either.

You can try one of the nVidia modified Detonator 'special drivers' at http://zoiah.m3dzone.com/ which has a Glide wrapper already included.

Please help me........I don't want to have to run WinME!

The latest Aztech drivers are at ftp://ftp.aztech.com.sg/pub/ If the modem happens to be one based on an older PCtel 789T chipset I would not be surprised if the modem was your problem. -
To get the Aureal Vortex sound cards to work well under Windows 2000, download the Aureal beta reference Windows 2000 drivers from the Aureal site or http://www.vortexofsound.com.

I have a couple dozen games (which I rarely get a chance to play), and only Slave Zero does not work under Windows 2000. I am annoyed that the Norton Systemworks 2000 that I bought before switching to Windows 2000 is not compatible with Windows 2000.

I have not installed Internet Explorer 5.5 on my home computer running Windows 2000 Professional because I am waiting for all the bugs to be fixed. I did install Internet Explorer 5.5 a on my work computer running Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5, and found that Internet Explorer 5.5 has an incompatibility with AtGuard 3.22 personal firewall software that causes 'Blue Screen of Death' occurrences periodically. The AtGuard software was sold to Symantec in 1999 and was incorporated into Norton Personal Firewall 2000. A few days ago I un-installed AtGuard 3.22 and installed Norton Personal Firewall 2000 on my work computer and have not had the 'Blue Screen of Death' occurrences since (yet).
