Strange Behavior with Mouse and Keyboard

it might be a problem with the Nat'l Keyboard pro. A friend of mine is having problems with the keyboard keys cutting in an out. So it might be an issue with the keyboard in XP.
  2. Yeah i might upgrade my motherboard to DDR ram and a GeForce 4 and maybe change out my 5400RPM drive with a 7200 other than that I guess it would be better to wait.

    Application error - pctspk.exe

I dont know what this program does, it sounds like its a Voice application of some kind. I don't think it is native to windows though. It should not be a problem for you to kill it out of the run section.

    Making Icons in My Computer

Anyone know how to make Icons that will show up in the "My Computer" section, like how drives and such do?
  5. Does MS plan on releasing a Service pack one for XP? Or are they going to say hell with it and instead release Windows XP SE? I know there are a lot of bugs in XP that i would like to see fixed and I don't plan on getting a new OS just to fix a few bugs

teac cd-rw 40x burn speed problems

then it was probably either an incompatability problem with the IDE controllers or chipset.

i would try running the app in compatability mode, some games designed for 9x kernals have a problem with the NT API calls.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 anytime soon?

I believe that Microsoft is in the right to try and stop some w.arez kiddies from trying to use XP. Its not if you like or do not like MS, it is the fact that Microsoft is a COMMERCIAL software company and they put out products to sell, so they have to worry about piracy and illegitmate copies of their software going around. Its like Winzip, yes MS could use the same protection scheme throughout the life of the product but in the case of something like an Operating System this is not a feasable business model. I do admit that some practices will alienate legit users, but that is why you paid for the product so you can call up MS and get support for the product you bought. Quote: 3. MS are NOT physically stopping anybody releasing a competitive product to anything they produce. It is not MS's fault that a lot of the so called "competitor" products pale to nothing when put up against MS products, blame all those people who have not written a better application that MS's. This is both true and false, one of the reasons MS is so sucessful is not because of no competition, it is because they have the money to squash the competition, and the backing from manufacturers to do so. We live in a capitalist country and the person with the most money wins, so MS "middleware" products are not better than or worse off than any other program it is just that since they control the market they can up the ante when they feel like it. If software makers can't produce a better product than the decent MS one then they need to find themselves new jobs. A perfect example is Nero, vs the XP burning Engine. I have a lady whose computer i work on, she has a CD burner and burns a few backups once and a while, so the XP burning engine is good for her. Me on the other burns movies, Mp3 CDs, Images and things of that nature. So the XP burning engine doesnt work for me this is where nero comes in, it is a better version of an XP middleware product. So MS is actually helping progress the market by upping the ante on software developers. This is one of the reason linux isn't as main stream as it could be is because the developers don't work together to perform better. So uhh yeah Sp1 will be out in Sept. cool

Windows XP doesn' seem to save settings

this solution has been posted many times though everyone doesnt seem to say it works though it works fine for me. Open a Window, and when closing the Window DO NOT use the "x" to close it. Instead hold down your ctrl button, and click on the File ----> close menu while holding down control. This will save the window size and position of any explorer window. You can also check the Make All Folders Like this one in the Tools, Folders menu.

Can you network a 98 machine to an XP one?

I have had the same problem, don't feel bad. I used WinRoute and I could ping my internal IP address but not my external one. I think it is a problem with Winblows 98 not liking XP.

    Two Odd Crashes

i dont know about the hot-fix crash, but i have heard of the problem with Kazaa, which sucks anyway get audiogalaxy or winMX. Kazaa is very much full of spyware, that is why kazaa lite is nice. I would see i couldnt report the error involved with your hotfix to M$, maybe with some luck they can get it fixed in time for WinXP SE.

    New system. What to get?

Yeah the nForce chipset is really nice and a very good deal if your going to be building a new system from the ground-up and not replacing anything from the old box. I also agree with Brian and that the board you mentioned is nice, but it lacks some of the new features that people will need in the future, USB 2.0,IEEE 1394 (FireWire),ATA133. Yeah make sure you never buy a 1st generation VIA chipset they ALL have problems (c'mon VIA get your *** in gear). I don't know anything about the AGP slot being out of spec with the nForce board so that is something to look out for. Anyway your best bet for a computer that is good is to go with the following companies. Video: nVidia GeForce 4 Ti4400 (not as expensive as the 4600 but can still kick some ***) Board: Asus or Abit (check hardware sites for the best board out so your can get a good idea on what ones have what and how they rate. www.hardocp.com is one of the best.) Sound: Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, its an old card but still one of the best EAX 1.0,2.0,DirectSound 3d, and A3d support. Burner/Optical Drive: Sony or Plextor LAN: Linksys or onboard 10/100 HardDisk: WesterDigital or Maxtor RAM: Kingston the BEST ram for overclocking. Crucial/Micron is good but its more expensive and doesnt overclock as well as Kingston. Processor: AMD or Intel, the pros with intel is that you can get an intel made Chipset on your board which is much more stable than any of the VIA crap out there. AMD pros are that they are overclocker friendly somewhat more so than intel, and they are cheaper, but they do run A LOT hotter. If you plan on running any DVD movies make sure you get a RealMagic Hollywood+ Decoder card. Hardware decoding of DVD movies is much better than software decoding is. I would also go with Windows XP Professional as your OS. Or Linux but since you said its for gaming Linux is ruled out. Those are my recommendations
  16. The best program i have used is Diskeeper 7. It has all the options of the crippled Win2k version, and more like set it and forget it, and options like that. Ive used SpeedDisk before and didnt like it much, and i have used the defragmenter with OnTrack's System Suite 4.0 and it isnt as good as Diskeeper. SpeedDisk can't defragment the MFT either, where Diskeeper can, also SpeedDisk doesnt have "Frag-Guard" technology that helps keep your drives fragment free.

    Jedi Knight 2

I find that this game is the best game i have ever played. The mutliplayer is very fun, anyone who says it is unfair just need to figure out the right force powers and what works for you. EVERYTHING has some counteractant you just need to find it. The light saber is probably the most powerful weapon in the game when combined with the right force amounts and combinations, just like it should be. I find it very nice that projectiles can be sent back to their originator; nothing like watching that homing missile kill the person that shot it. The capture the ysalimari mode is very cool because it adds a nice twist to mutliplayer in having the force-resistant bubble. The only down-side to the game is the lack of CTF&Y maps, there are only 4 total it sucks so much. Hopefully some new good maps will be on their way. This game will go down in history with games such as the Dark Forces predecesors of this game, and Quake(s), Counter-Strike, and many more. 9 1/2 out of 10

    Dedicated server requirements

it depends on a lot of things, the main concern is ram and bandwith. CPU speed effects loading times mostly so if it is an intensive game you will need a good CPU. I would say on a machine if you want to run 2 games you need 2 processors 1 processor will not run a 2 dedicated servers of high capacity (15+ people). So I would say something around 1gHZ with about a gig of SDR PC133 or 768 PC2100 DDR, would make a very nice server to run 2 mid-range servers on about 20 people on a T1-T3 connection is good, otherwise you will get problems with packet loss from people farther away from the server. Specifically what game are you trying to run on this machine??

    Cyberlink PowerDVD for Guest account

you can let any standard user account use the program, the problem is that the Guest account is very restricted and is not able to interface with anything for security reasons.
  20. I have used ghost and Drive Image Pro (Deploy Center) without problems. If your images are not returning correctly then it is a problem with the way you ghosted or the media you ghosted to.

    Remote Shutdown

A good non-freeware program is Remotely Anywhere. I have used many 'remote connection' programs and find this one to be the best. I works through a browser and all you need to do is set it up on the client machine. No software is needed on the host. www.remotelyanywhere.com

    Max Payne & Renegade

The renegade problem is related to ATI cards, it seems that Max Payne has a similar problem. I would make sure you have the latest drivers for your hardware and the latest directX

    Rengade

its not your card, it is the engine that renegade uses. The engine is very very buggy i mean i have seen bad engines before but this engine sucks. WAY too many bugs in it.
