Cool thanks, had to go through a pain in the *** trying to get a packet writing software that is XP compatible. Seeing that noplace on Roxio's site does it say ANYTHING about directCD 5.10 or any reference to earlier versions not working on XP. Im just glad to have DirectCD back and working. :yay:
-
Well when you try and install InCD it says its designed for 9x/NT/2000 not XP so its more a use at your own risk application. I got InCD working fine for me i just installed the newest version off Ahead's website and installed it in Win2k compatability mode.

ok now thats wierd, having excel run and not word... A page fault is when a program tries to access RAM or the page file and the area is already taken. What in turn happens is that say word needs a memory address but oh ICQ is taking that up, windows tries to write to that specific address then finds out its taken, and just dumps the information. In 9x this usually results in a Blue Screen of Death. In NT it usually just closes up the program and gives you an error message.

the problem sounds like a processor/ram/video issue. I would try loading another OS on there ME/2k/98se whatever and see if it still happens. In my opinion your friend shouldnt try running XP on a system such as his because it will lead to the problem your having, lockups. Not being there im guessing that what is happening is that the processor can't keep up with the requests that the OS is making, thus causing page fault upon page fault locking up the system. I mean a Celeron 600 only runs on a 60mHZ bus so its going to be slow as hell. You can either try adding RAM, to the box or go back to an OS that isnt as system intense as XP.

yeah, the problems sound like a USB and Harddisk related problem. If the USB device keeps on coming on and off, its sounds like its either not enough power to the USB device or an IRQ isnt assigned to it. As for the HD related problem i would probably relate it to the RAID setup on your disk. Ive heard of problems with the Promise controllers in XP. Also try the latest VIA IDE Drivers and see if those help ya out.

What DLLs are required to use non-signed skins in XP. I used to use StyleXP but now that they want money for it i need to find something free or just use old DLLs.

Come on now THC, you know better than that... While it was an interesting workaround, it is still bypassing the registration process and strays into the w4rez arena (which is *such* a bad word around here, you can't even spell it properly ) and isn't permitted on this board. EDITED BY clutch

i use winamp aswell and i find it to be one of the best programs ive used. Ive used musicmatch, WMP, and like all sorts of imitations, but nothing is better than WinAmp. Ive been using WinAmp for a long time now, since '96 and it has never let me down.

I'm missing system files on XP according to Norton Utilities
ThC 129 replied to Pikey's topic in Software
yeah ive warned/been warned about WinDoctor in NT 5+ it has been reported to screw up more installs than it helps. -
WinRoute will work in XP as soon as the new version is out. As to when that is im not sure, i just know that they said they were working on getting one out.

I know GHOST won't do it but i think something from powerquest will either Deploy Center or something along that line should allow you to ghost both drives into a single image. I don't know if it will specifically image RAID arrays though.

password protecting shared files/folders on a network
ThC 129 replied to shassouneh's topic in Networking
I know in 2000 that you can make folders accessable to people only by using the security tab on the drive same as in XP. The only thing is that in XP you have to go to folder ---> options then take off Use Simple file sharing. Then the security tab will show up. -
yeah EAC and lame are the best way to go when encoding into MP3

Cool thx for sharing m8. It looks like its a little more advanced than Nvrefresh rate fix.

Well if you can get into safe mode, go to the device manager and change the computer type from ACPI Compliant to Standard PC. Also if that doesnt work when you reinstall press F6 when it asks you to, then you can select Standard PC from there.

Quote: ya it does but didnt work! LOL thats microshaft for ya. I don't understand why people tolerate this in the computer industry. I mean if you look at it from a different standpoint, say the auto industry, you buy a new 2002 Supercar made by Company XYZ, now in the 1st week of driving it your car stalls 4 times, your headlights work once and a while, and your windows only go down when you don't want them too. Now you get computer products that crash every 5 mins, to ones that run fine one day then the next they just decide to stop working , if your car ran like that you would take it back, now why can't we hold the computer industry to a higher standard, are we trying to say its acceptable because most people assume that writing computer software is so hard that you expect it to be buggy. I would think that designing a car is a little harder. Oh well not much we can do, i mean hell not even NASA can get a mutli-billion dollar mars lander to the right destination because they f-ed up the math.

i think TweakUI XP has a repair option in it for repairing special folders too.

it is because your computer is most likely the browse master, so all data that the other computers on the network need go to and from that computer. TCP/IP netowrking is a hierarchy, the computer with the best OS becomes the browsemaster so all other computers on the network look to that computer for info on the other computers in line. I don't know how to not make it the browse master but if you don't need data between the 2 computers to stay concurrent stop the server and computer browser services and set them to manual. Also look for QoS packet scheduler on your network connections, if it is in them take it out, that way your bandwith won't be reserved for QoS packets.

the current version of FireDeamon doesnt support XP. They say there will be a new version out soon that does though.

the problem in short is your player. It seems like it has some issues with the Windows NT code base.

No XP probs at all. The only problem i had was using POS crucial ram. I switched my RAM over to kingston and all is good now. Overclockability is back where with the POS crucial ram i couldn't go higher than 2 FSB clocks over 133 or the ram would crap out on me. I have my CPU running at 1.428 right now with a 10.5 and 140mHZ bus and everything is back to normal with my good old Kingston ram. The only 'problem' if you would call it that is that the taskbar loses the icons in it when its on the side of my desktop when "Lock Taskbar" is checked.

getting use of msn messenger for groups other than admin
ThC 129 replied to Helmann's topic in Software
check the security settings for that folder. Right click on the folder hit sharing and security. Under that make sure that the specific group of people can access it, such as power users limited users admins. -
Recommendation for 4 ch sound card that works under XP Pro
ThC 129 replied to tdavie's topic in Hardware
I have a santa cruz and i couldnt be happier. The thing with the versa-jack is that it can be set to line-in, analog line-out or digital line-out. So you can use it as a 2nd line-in jack you just have to set it as so with the software that comes with the card. -
the other entries are procedure calls pointing to memory locations or something of that sort. The numbers are in hexadecimal that is why they have letters and numbers. Judging by the dump your getting it is due to the soundcard trying to write to a memory location that is already in use, or trying to use EAX when its not able to thus crashing.
